I watched this video 2 years ago, when Paddy released it. However I failed to take his advice and have suffered along for 2 years just thinking that I could play as is, this despite me really wanting to be a golfer whi shoots low scores. Yesterday I had the most atrocious game ever, I just couldn't hit the ball straight. My friend told me to put the club in the fingers of my right hand, just like Paddy says here. My response was that it feels so ridiculously uncomfortable and I can't control the club. He forced me to swing like that, I hit my best shots of the day and was more balanced and controlled in my swing. My mind was blown away. My worst decision to date in golf was not listening to this video when I first saw it. Thank you for the advice Paddy, wishing you everything of the best, I know you probably won't see this but I figured I would say it anyway. Whoever watches this video, I hope you don't make the mistake I did. Golf really can be a miserable game when you don't get the basics right.
If you're golfing correctly, then you start the next round ignoring the advice again until a few holes into the back nine when things go well until they don't.

A gentleman approached me at the driving range the other day, noticing I’m a new golfer and that I was consistently topping the ball, and mentioned my lead arm kept bending during the backswing. This sort of blew my mind as I felt I was focusing on keeping it straight, and it felt straight to me. Even when he showed me how it should look and I tried to replicate it, it felt awfully uncomfortable - but I was hitting a lot cleaner. I’m a more muscular guy so perhaps it’s a flexibility issue, but now I realize my grip has been deeper into my palm just as Padraig showed most am’s do in this video. Just did a few practice swings with a newly adjusted grip lower in my fingers. It’s made a world of difference, I can hear the difference in club speed without any added effort, my lead arm can extend comfortably just like the gentleman at the range showed me, all due to this minor detail. Thank you Paddy, can’t wait to get back out there and drill this into muscle memory.
This is one of those things that I've struggled with in my journey to become a better golfer. You explained the grip really well and I most appreciated the "squeezing your thumb with the pad of your right hand" reminder as it immediately feels like a better grip in that position.
Thats one humble awesome dude right here taking time to do this. Absolutely amazing. Guy is dropping lesson after lesson for free that you generally would have to pay for. Cant thank him enough for making these videos.

Messed around with hitting balls ever since I was a kid but at 60 only joined a club this year. Got some second hand clubs and headed out only to realise that I have picked up a lot of bad habits over the years. Paddy's no nonsense tips helps me cut through the bull. Beginning to be able to shape the shot, 'swishing' the club has added no end of yards, 'chest' has helped me cut out lateral movement and 'hold' has got my playing mates slagging the bleep out of me (but helps me to 'complete the process' every time). Cannot wait to break 90. Getting close! More importantly......loving the game. Cheers Padraig.

THANK YOU!!!! I have taken nearly 16 years off from playing golf and just now getting back into it. I was a single digit handicap golfer back then and just gave it up to raise my kids and help my wife. I just couldn’t justify leaving her home alone with three kids. I didn’t completely quit but I maybe played at most 54 holes in a year. So coming back has been frustrating. I played today in a game for a couple of dollars and I just couldn’t hit anything consistently. I was left. I was right. I was long. I was short. And I had no idea which was coming next. I shot an 85 and it was beyond frustrating. I’ve watched a handful of your videos now and I’m looking forward to getting back out there. I know my grip was off. I have been struggling with chipping so I know I’ll get that back down. It’s funny because I think I made every error you described. Side note: I was taught by a friend of mine way back in the 1980s. He took many lessons from Jack Grout and enjoyed teaching me. I’m looking forward to making certain my grip is back to these fundamentals. I know my scores will thank me and I’ll be back under par soon enough!
I’ve embraced what you say about the grip and the difference is amazing! My hook shots have gone and I’m hitting many more greens now. Get the fundamentals right and the game is so much easier
I've always like you as a golfer. But after watching you on down the line with Alex Evans and the Biff you're one of my favorites now. Great 2 rounds to start this week in Scotland
Thank you for this explanation of the grip. I probably have had a bad grip for 30m years. Sometimes it would work for awhile and not so much other times. I will integrate this grip into my game . Season is close to shutting down as Winter approaches. Definitely something to learn.
This is a historic lesson, from the Ben Hogan (Open Champion 1953) 'Five Lessons' book, to Padraig Harrington (Open Champion 2007 AND 2008) to us, the humble public. You've done something so great here Padraig.
I started playing golf 3 years ago in my 50s. The grip never felt right to me. I played around my grip, but your video convinced me that this was not only ineffective, but ultimately a total waste of time. And, my golf showed it. I'd break 90. Then I'd be back up over 100. Find some more hacks & go under 100 again. Your emphasis on the importance of grip has already changed my outlook & I've only been able to implement over the last week. First, I found my SKLZ grip trainer that I discarded. Then, I hit the chip shots you recommended. I have power in my swing that I've never had previously. Thanks so much & I appreciate your desire to share the insights of a great golfer so us amateurs can enjoy the game more.
Been playing with a strong right hand for 30 years. Left was my big miss, but was able to work with it. Moved right hand to neutral - eureka! No big miss. Thanks Paddy.
Wow this is really amazing a true champion with 3 major wins sharing his fundamentals to us amateurs to me is considered an angel coming from heaven. I have looked at your other videos and applied it at the range and it really works. I hit the golf balls crisps and extra distance. I still need more practice to get used to it. I have been playing for a long long time and every time I left the range I felt disappointed. Not this time my motivation is back again. I just recently subscribed to your channel so I have been going over and over with your videos. More power to you Mr. Harrington I can’t you enough. God Bless you.
Just started last two days and the right hand I'd the hardest but when I do to chip swing with a 5 iron and hold it through impact. It goes further and the strike is so sweet. Mental. Thanks Padddy. You are an Irish treasure for sure. Learned more here than all the hundreds of stuff on UA-cam over the past few years. Legend

Another nice round today Padraig, good luck for the weekend. Thanks for this, my grip keeps creeping back into my palm so its something I need to constantly check, thanks for the good reminder.
That was the best 13 minutes spent in a long time - fantastic points, thank you Padraig
A great champion providing quality instruction, thank you!
I’ve embraced what you say about the grip and the difference is amazing! My hook shots have gone and I’m hitting many more greens now. Get the fundamentals right and the game is so much easier
Good luck this week good playing and thanks Paddy
A great teacher who also had a great teacher thank you so much for your lessons of wisdom!
My right hand needs to get more on top for sure. Thanks Paddy
That's the best lesson I've seen by far on the grip.
Fantastic, thank you, pressing down on the thumbs feels great already. Good to see you up on that leaderboard, all the very best for the weekend.
One the best instructions I have seen, and for taking the time to share with us. It has made a massive difference to my swing.
This is a historic lesson, from the Ben Hogan (Open Champion 1953) 'Five Lessons' book, to Padraig Harrington (Open Champion 2007 AND 2008) to us, the humble public. You've done something so great here Padraig.
Thank you Padraig. I couldn’t believe you would share your expertise like this. Wow. Thank again.
Legend
I really like the bluntness, as with any coach , friend , teacher , or parent, the ability for them to tell it like it really is and your ability to listen 👂 to them are absolutely essential for progress in anything in life . The truth hurts sometimes but it will also help you grow , great video .
Pat, I’ve put this into practice, what a difference. Keep um coming 👍
Very well and step by step explained about the grip , thanks Padraig . Excellent job !👌👌
NOW PADY YOU ARE A TRUE PRO YOU EXPLANE EVERYTHING THE WAY IT SHOULD BE EXPLANED, JUST GREAT
Mahalo Padraig for such an honest and comprehensive explanation of the proper grip.
Thank you Padraig. The way you deliver the message absolutely makes you pay attention and tells me that what your teaching is not negotiable. A great lesson and thank you again.
