Hi Clay. I watched this video a couple of weeks ago because I had lost faith and control with my grip. I practiced your grip at the range and was quite happy. I put it to the test yesterday and my local league course. No parallel fairways. OB and hazards everywhere. I was thrilled! I shot a pair of 41's for an 82. The real kicker is I played the same ball for the entire round! That is the first time I've ever done that and have been playing here for 20 years!!

I wanted to say thank you for making this video. Immediately after watching this i drove straight to the range and implemented your techniques. Wow I couldn’t hit the ball straighter. Great video, the way the proper grip is explained was very easy to follow. I can visualize everything he said. I grabbed a golf glove and put marks on it and off to the range I went to try it out.

Best golf grip / thumb position lesson EVER!.. I often felt too much friction on my left thumb pad in the swing and didn't know why. For the very first time I now know the reason. With that in mind I am surprised I got my handicap down as low as 18. I know now that even if I had the perfect hip rotation, swing path and lag, it would be compromised by poor thumb and grip control. Thank you Clay!!

This is excellent content. From what i see around the traps, If you play off 20+ hcp, this video WILL highlight your biggest problem. It won’t get u to scratch but will take u to single figures!! Nice work clay

I watched this video yesterday and went to the range that evening to try this out. I never realized that I had been separating my thumbs over and around the club creating that gap. I instantly felt more control and the "whip" of the club through contact once I connected those thumbs to the index fingers.

Back after almost 20 years. Used to shoot 90s. Pre youtube, hell pre internet. Learning about forward shaft lean and compressing the ball, however the flight path of my ball is way lower now. When I do it right the ball goes way longer and is more solid. I'm worried about holding greens though with a ball that does not go high. How do you hit a high shot into a green with forward shaft lean?

This is very important information for all Golfers. A bad grip especially over the red area on the glove , clay mentioned may result in a Hook of Hamate fracture. I had it. Got surgery to remove the fractured bone. Fusing it back had little to no relevance. And besides I desired the fastest recovery option, Went with the removal. A good and safe grip goes a long way for your health and great flush spots. 😳

Oh man just fixing my left hand like that properly allowed me to get a tad higher on my backswing and hinge better. My thumb was way to right of center.
since the arms are the next closest thing to all important grip could you pls do a video on their setup positions some say left elbow to the target some say point left elbow at left pocket which is correct dont know what to do tks or maby you have already covered this in one of your videos tks
I attended a clinic at Valderrama that was hosted by MacGregor golf in 2002 & J.M. Olazabal said almost the same thing except he told us (in his broken English) the right thumb and index finger were the pressure points, so I am forced to call you on that at 2:45
Great video. When I have my right hand on the club should the right thumb be dowmnthe middle of the shift orbe on the right side (small principle you showed for the left thumb)? If I keep the right thumb and forefinger pinched together on the right side of the shaft the club feels very unstable.
If you're right-handed then you want the left thumb and index finger to be pinched not the right hand. I like to wrap my right thumb over the shaft, but do what feels and works best for you. Best of luck! Nate | TSG Instructor
Hi Clay recently I discovered on my own the importance of my little trail finger. That through my brain I can actually feel the variable weights of my club head as it is traveling through it path in time and space directly down to and through my ball; and whose angular momentum stands me up at the end of my classic swing.
Your wonderful and complete descriptions of the grip validates my focus on my little trail finger with every club I play. Cheers ⛳️😃👍🥂

Just drew all these marks on my 2 gloves. I really hope this helps. I’m a visual learner so it will be nice to have a visual aid to ensure I’m in the right spot. I suffer from a bad hook every few holes from my strong grip

Question: I'm starting to work the ball. I've been changing my grip as opposed to my stance because I don't like to change the timing in my hips. Would I be more consistent changing the pressure of my grip or where it's located?
No, you're going to have a hard time controlling that. The easiest way is to change the face, stance and ball position to work the ball.

How are you supposed to keep the left index and thumb cinched when using interlocking grip? Unless you have really big hands won't those 2 fingers come apart?
No, your thumb will stay connected to the hand.
i used to sinch my fingers together, but its was puttin alot of stress on the basal joint in the left thumb. i have "double-jointed" thumbs so that makes it difficult for me i think.

I'm not sure if this is the best place to leave this comment, but I hope it helps some one out. I tend to have a lot of fat(sorry for my English) on my palms. My hands aren't hard, they're soft. So when I grab the club, because the fat on the palm always moves, it made gripping the club very hard. The club kept moving within my hands. When I grip, I always had to move the fat to put the grip in between the fats which gave me a very tight feeling. But even with the tight feelings my grip didn't feel super good. I knew it wasn't the most comfortable feeling because sometimes, I didn't know how, but I feel the grip super comfortable and accurate. It feels as if I finally understand how pros can be so accurate. Because without this feeling it just kinda seemed impossible. Anyways sorry for the long beginning but the trick is 'not to move the fats to fit the grip in between the fats, but rather putting the grip on top of the fat'. If you do so, you might feel a bit awkward while trying to put the grip on top of the fat by flattening the it. But once you place it and roll your fist to make the grip, you will find the grip you were looking for. Hope it helps someone.
at 6:10 it shows the wrong grip with a club, but not the correct grip with the club. I think this is a big correction for me and wish I could see the correct grip with club orientation.
Gripping my club in the air or on the ground? I am finding / seeing a difference in striking the ball. When I grip while holding the club in the air, gives my better ball strikes vice on the ground. Why? Thank you.

When I grip the club I interlock my right pinky between left pointer and left middle finger like I see in videos and have been told by friends, I can only get a handful of shot in before my pinky really starts to hurt and I cant do it anymore. I try resting my pinky over the top of those 2 finger instead , but then it feels like I'm losing more grip strength.
Maybe I'm gripping it wrong, but any advice in how to fix that?
Maybe you're gripping too hard when you interlock? The only time you're gripping too lightly is when the club slips through your hands. Best of luck! Nate | TSG Instructor
Thé trail hand little finger is more then just a pressure point on the grip. Because it is the weakest link that holds the grip of the club and because is is located at the center of the grip it acts as a scale for our brain to feel the ever increasing weight and angular momentum that our club head is traveling throughout time and space throughout our entire golf swing.
Focus on the weight of your club head with just your trail little finger and you will as yourself: ‘Am I swinging my club or is my club swinging me?´ So don’t give up on your little trail fingers and you should continue to see excellent results. Cheers ⛳️😃👍🥂

I must be casting my club. On my trail hand, I have a callus in the index finger.
It's hard to determine if you're casting without seeing a swing and the grip still makes contact with your trail index finger, so even a callus doesn't necessarily indicate casting. When I put my index finger and my thumb together there is a big gap between the palm under my thumb and the grip. Is this normal?
You don't want to put your index finger and thumb together. You just want your thumb against your hand so there is no gap. It might touch the bottom of your index finger some.

How is the right pinky a pressure point? Isn't it supposed to be wrapped around my left index finger?

I’ve tried this grip a couple of times. Everytime I get i right, my shots are really great. But i’m struggling with the part where the left thumb sticks with the index finger. The short thumb position. Whenever I start overlapping my right hand my left thenor, the inside of the left palm thumb feels strained and starts to harden. Why is this? Is there something wrong with what I’m doing?

My palm is 5 1/2 inches my longest finger is 3 1/2 my problem is when I grip in my fingers my left hand this leaves space in my palm can't get closed hand in my grip tried thick and thin grips think thin grips better as the grip is totally in my fingers no palm as suggestions thanks

I'm 67 yrs old, a 27 handicap, been golfing for 37 years and never understood the importance of grip. After watching this and practicing one time, I went out and shot an 86. I've never been in the 80s. Can't wait to practice a little more and then see what Clay means by "lag".

Hey Clay, I hear other instructors talk about having a “long thumb” in your grip, but more importantly I’ve seen more and more tour pros having the “long thumb” in their grip...Tony Finau is a good example. Can you please touch on this a little bit more? Thank you

Want to check my grip. The explanation with the thumb makes sense to me. But as recommended video on this one I see one from golftv and I watched that too. The explanation with the thumb is almost the opposite. This makes me a noob confused 😂 I know there are more way to do something. But I think grip should be almost the same for everybody.

I don't understand how all these professionals and trainers on the UA-cam can have such different learning methods. Here we have method to idealy cut off right thumb and index finger and to glue left thumb to the index (short thumb). Other video from different trainer shows that we should use "long thumb" to allow the club to move freely and hinge more at the top of the swing (and it souds logic that thumb stands in the way and has to bend => lose of control). Another professional say that three most important fingers are - left pinkie, right index and right thumb as they support the weight of the club and make it stable in the top of the swing.
So where is the truth?
