  • Let's dive into the history of mending and darning clothes! In this video, I going through why we mended our clothes throughout most of history, why mending slowly went out of fashion from the mid-20th century onwards in favour of replacing our clothes with new ones.
I am also covering why mending has started to make a comeback in recent years, the rise of visible mending and if visible mending is the new anti-fashion?
I am also sharing a bit about the history behind the Japanese mending techniques Sashiko (刺し子) & Boro (ぼろ).

As a man who mends his clothing, I personally find the whole experience to be extremely rewarding. I look at it in the same way I would replacing a cord on an appliance or painting a door or getting a car to start again. It just doesn't make sense to waste.

I fully agree! I also find, and maybe this was what you were getting at, that hunting for new items often takes way longer than repairing them.

Love this, so interesting and well researched. It would make a fascinating book, perhaps even an academic thesis? Then you could be Dr Matti xx

I would love to see a video on how to alter T-shirt from how to make them shorter and how to the sleeves shorter…. Thanks….

Great idea! I am actually working on a mending video where I did shorten a t-shirt (amongst other things). Until that video is live just want to let you know that I have a video on how to hem a t-shirt using a regular sewing machine that might also help.
