Here’s how I fill up sketch books: 1. *Never rip out pages!* it’s tempting but don’t do it! It’s bad for the book but also it’s just not good for your creative process either. If you really hate something u drew, put sticky notes or stickers on top of it, or use a marker to draw over, but please for the love of god don’t rip the page 2. Don’t show anyone your sketch book. Draw personal self indulgent drawing that you would never post online, draw things for yourself without the expectation of showing others. 3. Don’t put too much pressure on it. Make sure to draw something ugly earlier on, you don’t have to go out of your way to make it ugly, but just try something new and if it turns out ugly that’s ok. Keep it there, and now in the sketch book from now on this will be your standards. Like if you draw something later and think it’s bad you can just refer back to the first bad drawing and realize “this isn’t that bad” 4. Draw the way *you* prefer sketching. I used to be awful at keeping up sketch books or finishing them. I always put too much emphasis on making every page look nice, and I never used all the space on a page. But when I would be in class I would doodle on the margins of my work sheets, then turn them in and never see those drawings again. So I got a little sketch book so anytime I would be in class and felt like doodling on my paper, I would instead take out my sketch book to draw my little doodles in there instead. And it was great, I ended up filling entire pages and not caring if they were masterpieces. So if your the type to grab a different paper to try a doodle or idea for a drawing, this time instead try gravitating to your sketch book first and draw it there. Treat your sketchbook like extra paper that’s laying around 5. Make sure you get a good sized book. Are you the type that always has too much space left on pages that you never fill? Try getting a smaller sketch book, so you can fill pages easier and see less unused negative space. 6. What’s the quality of your book? Is your sketch book really high quality and that intimidates you? Dose you’r sketch book have a really great design on the cover that you don’t want to ruin. Well try getting a cheaper book, get a book that has a blank cover. Quality is important sometimes though, sometimes you want paper that can withstand whatever medium you prefer, but don’t choose really cool looking books that look so beautiful to the point where you never want to draw in them because your scared it will ruin it. And when it comes to customization, I don’t decorate my sketch book cover with drawings and stickers until I’m 60% done with it. If you decorate the cover early on then you don’t want to “ruin” the book with bad drawings, so I wait later until I’m comfortable with it. 7. Finally, don’t compare your sketch book to others, especially the really pretty impressive ones online. I don’t care if your sketch book as a lot of amateur unfinished doodles while some kid on insta or UA-cam has masterpieces on every page, at least you finished *your* sketch book, with every page drawn on, and a lot of your personality and thought process put into it.
I just paint over sketchs I do not like. I move forward with sketching and later when the book lacks space I return to paint with acrylics over bad stuff.
This is wholesome and healthy approach to the sketchbooks. I'd add, that if one has difficulty finishing the book, try slimmer book, say, just 32 pages instead of 60 or 120, and then expand from there. Also - blank covers are nice because one can decorate them with anything.
the best part about seeing her complete the 300 pages within 12 days is her smiles and laughter at the end of it. man that must've felt nice. you could see how proud she is of herself and that everything she did within those days were worth it.
Same. I have to wait for something inside to move me before I develop even a single piece I've started. It helps to leave your work and art supplies out where you can see it at all times. When I did this, once, I could be busy with something else and notice more things I could do to my art (as the art sat in the corner of the room, staring at me). Then I would simply walk over and try what would come to mind, and before I knew it the flow would begin. Maybe I should go back to doing that, lol.

@@Bruhaustindavis I think he means that despite having to paint so many pictures in a short span of time, she can power through without any serious form of art block. When I have art block, I just stop drawing for weeks
You just gave me the impulse I needed to fill a sketchbook entirely, so I've just pre-ordered your book and I promise to myself I will fill it to the end when I receive it!
i absolutely love this channel. you guys are always doing creative things that are actually entertaining, and its pretty clear that SO MUCH EFFORT goes into everything you do! i've been binging, love it
As an aspiring writer, I can confirm that completing literally ANYTHING, even if I have to force myself to do so, gives me the drive to write longer or better quality works. Last month, my wife challenged me to write everyday. Because of some time constraints on some days, I only completed 20 out of 30 days, but that’s more than I’ve ever done independently before! I also really enjoyed myself, so I’ve continued working on a prompt my friend gave me 2 weeks ago. Initially, his story was meant to be about 3 pages, but based on my progress and the outline I created, it’s going to end up somewhere around 50 pages! Great job pursuing your sketchbook goal. Sometimes we creative types need to force ourselves to get started, but we always end up having fun in the end. :)
Good. Most people make the mistake of trying to start at the beginning when writing a book or project. I get into a general outline and then find scenes or things that grab me and do those first, and then go on from there. (for instance, a snippet of dialog, or an action scene) If you keep at it you'll find yourself taking notes at anytime and it will be self-sustaining. (Trust me, for me the hard part is stopping!) I can usually complete a 300+ page book in under 20 days these days. Completing a project is very addicting and satisfying!
My goal is to write everyday in a Journal that is in OneNote. The goal is about 20 minutes, because out of that usually comes great stories. That said, the other day, I wasn't feeling great, and all I wrote was "Good Morning". The next day, I chuckled and thought, "I was successful! I wrote something!" LMBO!
@@RiverWoods111 Great! The trick is to not beat yourself up too much but keep doing something even if it's a couple of words. I keep thinking of that Christmas song. "Put one foot in front of the other..."
@@chrishechtl8330 I'm working on a Sci Fi novel, currently it looks to be 36 chapters long. I had a basic idea, and then put together a "road map" or time line. Seems to have worked well, I'm two chapters from the end. 36 is a piece o cake, but 35 has had me stuck for over a year and a half. It's about 1 3rd done. I also got into writing Fan fiction, man there are some really great writers doing that. My grade 10 English teacher had us doing a lot of writing. She though I had potential, so Mrs Ross, this is for you.
I'm 39 and have also never finished a sketchbook. It may be time to crack down and really set time aside to draw. Maybe I'll do it before I'm 40. Congrats, Martina. This is truly incredible.
This might help...i hope it does. Depending on what you like to draw i would make a list of , for instance, places, animals, maybe your fave characters or whatever you like and rip the pieces into individual bits and put them in a bowl and pick out how ever many bits you want and draw those into the same scene to give you inspiration? Only if you want haha
@@JockScrapDraws This is a good idea, and something I've tried. Now I'm working on consistency. Writing a list might help, since I tend to be going 10 directions at once. Thanks, I'll give it a go. :) I also threw up a reddit thread for folks to give me interesting critter ideas, but they lean toward things like cats playing blackjack, and monkey pharmacists. Still, I've pulled a bit of content out of it.
@@krenzart7424 Good luck. I'm 3 pages in, but hope to have more time to draw, now that holidays and my commissions are done. Puts me about 7 days behind for one a day, so I'll have to do a few extra now and then.
I was looking for a comment like this. I am 44 and completed my first sketchbook ever two years ago, even tho I started dozens. Since that first on, I completed another 6 or 7. For some reason, the first one is the hardest.
*Now THAT was a privilege to witness!* Just incredible, all of it: your focus, your determination to follow through, and of course the art itself. I sincerely appreciate your posting this. I have saved it to my "Inspiring" list of videos. Be well!
"If I don't put pressure on myself, I won't get anything done." Well, it bloody well worked. You got... a looooot... ... ... done... It's actually really fun pausing on the pages that catch your eye and I recommend everyone do it. These are quite good for averaging 25 a day. I'm a sucker for neatly framed small things with lots of shades of similar colors with lots of contrast like 9:54. I'd hang those side by side on a wall like the cat's checking out the dracos. Love was put into every one of these. It's great. It's an awesome book.
I caught myself saying things out loud while watching this. Along the lines of: "This girl is fucking insane", "What a madlad", "Goddamn she's monsterously good", "Fucking hell I'm jelous of her skills and mindset and dicipline". A few more things, but this was generally the emotions I felt during this. Martina, you are so bloody talented. Legit on top of your game because of how you always challenge yourself, and then proceed to exceed those expectations every damn time. Sick!
Sometimes you have to set a challenge like this for yourself. In the last 2 years I had 2 sketchbooks open but mainly did digital art. When 2021 started I'd set the resolution that I'd finish both by the end of the year. I finished the smaller one in early August and then blasted through half of the larger one in about a month, finishing it mid-October. I'd had that sketchbook in use for over 2 years, which is the longest I've had a sketchbook in use for since I started filling sketchbooks. It was beyond satisfying to get it done but I found myself on an incredible roll with it when I really got into it. Glad you finally got to experience that finished sketchbook feeling! I hope you get the chance to complete some of the old ones you've cracked open before too :)
I love how each picture tells a different story. It's amazing how you did almost 25 drawings/paintings on each day. The level of commitment is admirable!
1. WOW! 2. Your creativity is positively amazing! 3. You are an inspiration! I thought my son (age 22) and I were the only ones who moved on without completing a sketch book. This has given me the inspiration to sit with him once a week in the new year and do 2 pages each, so by the end we would have 104 each. Please never stop this beautiful passion of yours!!
She's done the impossible. best of all, every single page looks awsome, from the prompts to fanart, landscapes and especially that little bit dedicated to the witcher.
im sad how she made the flipthru a time lapse, because the paintings are so good it was like a sensation overload and i needed a longer moment to process the beauty of each one
Real life achievement unlucked! Congratulations to you, Martina. The art looked stunning and i can't help wondering how a Christmas Calendar would have looked if you made it. :D
duuuude that's so awsome! I'm one of those people who can't finish a sketch book because I always buy a new one and abandon the poor old one. And doing so many paintings in only 12 days? That's so amazing!!! That would take me soooo much time ! You can be really proud of yourself! I'm not event gonna mention your drawing skills that are just fantastic!! I love you Martina you are such an inspiration to creation and when I watch one of your videos I always wand to create something and that's incredible!!!
this recently made me sit down and fill a page with various doodles and styles! As a perfectionist, almost every page of my sketchbook has *one* portrait, *one* structure, or are serious projects. I rarely every fill every inch of a page, let alone with doodles (aside from concept art/design ideas). But I sat down and filled two pages to the brim of different characters, patterns, text, anything my brain could think of! Doing exercises like these make you feel amazing and I'm glad I did it
this gave me an incredible amount of inspiration, i’ve been going through one of the worst art blocks and this video just saved me. such amazing and beautiful artwork!!
literally I was so in love with the sketchbook that immediately after watching the video I bought myself one really motivated me to sit down and draw tbh
How even can a person be this talented?? I've never seen anything like this in my life and probably never will see anything like it. Thank you for showing all of us your talent!
When I started I was at a convention with my art. And the artist who was main artist at that convention was Larry Elmore. He came to my station and said that my art reminded him of his when he started. He told me that until he decided to dedicate 6 to 8 hours a day to art he was stagnant. but when he did that his skills went through the roof. Since I have decided to dedicate all my time to my art I see that he was so right. The more art I do the better I get and the more I want to do.
This feels like one of those nostalgic books that you loved once as a kid and would find in the library and would never give it to anyone and try to hide it from them but is always found🙂
honestly sometimes "bootcamp" approaches really really help you improve and i feel like we can see that here from segment to segment! i really respect the work ethic here : D congratulations on finishing it, i love your positive attitude i just want to say, if beginner artists watch this, drawing a lot helps, but dont overwhelm yourself! it can take the fun out of drawing if you arent already super passionate i think.
I have to say. You are such an incredible inspiration to me. I've been following you for years now, when you started posting videos on how to create handmade sketch book tomes, and it got me into book binding, which is now one of my favorite things to create. I have always struggled on completing a sketch book full of drawings, and I keep collecting them and I wasn't sure quite why, but you nailed it on the head. Anyways, you've inspired me to actually finish a sketchbook and that's going to be my goal this coming year. Thanks again for sharing your passion with the world. Your genuine excitement and positivity fills my heart with joy everytime I watch your videos.
As much as I love to draw/paint/create, I was never able to do so consistently. Your video made me realise one thing - I can set myself a tight goal and race against time and get so much more practice done this way! I'm starting to gather ideas now, maybe I'll be able to challenge myself this weekend :D
This video is inspiring. Also just got my copy of this sketchbook and I didn't realize just HOW MASSIVE it is! Now this video is even more impressive! I'm on my quest to finish it now
I am on a sketchbook buying ban...after I preorder this sketchbook. 😂 I already have a full shelf and a half of brand new sketchbooks that haven't been used yet. This video definitely inspires me to complete some of the sketchbooks I already have open though. Great job on completing 300 pages in 12 days!! And each page is gorgeously painted/drawn!!
How is it fair that by day 12 you can tell Martina was rushing, yet everything she drew/painted is still 1000% better than anything I’ve ever done in my entire life? 😭 All jokes aside, this was incredible to watch, so I can only imagine how amazing it must have felt to complete that sketchbook! ❤️
I could never, for the love of everything that's good out there, complete a sketch book. I buy material all the time. I go to the store and my eyes are glued to the art supplies and I have to leave with a piece or two, it's a thing I cannot fight. My mind conjure ideas all the time, but my hands are not skilled enough to follow and It's way too easy to just 'Leave it for Later'. I watched with secret adoration and a great deal of respect as you went through this one and my heart.. well....my simple heart was filled with joy and pride at the happiness radiating from you at the very end. Silly as it is, I was teary eyed as it was ending. I stumbled upon this channel a while back and it's incredible to watch it grow and expand. You have so much in you to put on these pages, it's marvelous really. Never stop challenging yourself like that, it a beautiful work of art in every next step you take.
As some one that is getting started with sketching and drawing, hearing 5:00 - 5:05 from such a talented person makes me feel like less of an amature while also showing what a humble and genuine persona Martina is.
This was an amazing video! I'm so excited that you were able to accomplish this, kudos! Also, the editing, music, and lighting on this video was perfection. Thank you for slowing down the footage to normal speed when you peeled off the tape around the edges...so important!
stumbled on your page while looking at acrylic pours and i love you. you're insane and insanely talented. Didn't realize you had to make a freaking masterpiece on every page. Subscribed!!!!!!!!!!
martina : i can't draw animals also martina : proceeds to draw amazing animal illustrations that most people wouldn't draw even in their wildest dreams
It is just so amazing how you did this. I feel that if I did it I would rush and make a messy page but you on the other hand have pushed your self to put 110% into every single painting!
I think I would buy a print of your completed sketchbook as an art book. I would love to own a printed copy that includes written entries about your experience creating this. Why you decided to do it, what your mental process was during the experience, your thoughts about doing it afterwards and any words you have for other artists etc. It would be really interesting I think. If you've ever heard of 8 Coins Tattoo Tarot or Bonefire Tarot, the books they wrote with their deck have a lot of personal story about the process of creation included in it as well as personal anecdotes and I really love that about those decks.
We love the challenge you set for yourself in this video! It's a perfect way to advertise the sketchbook! We finally ordered one today! Can't wait to hold it in our hands! We love the slongan on the cover
As always, absolutely beautiful art Martina! And such an inspirational message to go with it. I decided to give myself a Christmas gift and preorder the new sketchbook, and I'm going to try to remember that the act of creating art (even "badly") is more powerful than my dumb brain lets on and just enjoy it like I used to.
Congratulations on completing the book! You're an amazing artist, but to take on such an ambitious project and see how they're all well done is just an awesome feat! I would love to have some of those digitized to be used as wallpaper. Well done!

I'd add, that if one has difficulty finishing the book, try slimmer book, say, just 32 pages instead of 60 or 120, and then expand from there.
Also - blank covers are nice because one can decorate them with anything.
I will definitely use these tips since I am quite guilty of having at least some of the bad habits you described.
Oh wow.. thanks for the tips! Hope I get to use them whenever this art block goes away :')

the best part about seeing her complete the 300 pages within 12 days is her smiles and laughter at the end of it. man that must've felt nice. you could see how proud she is of herself and that everything she did within those days were worth it.
Proof that it shouldn’t take me an entire year to fill 200 pages
That's cute..

You just gave me the impulse I needed to fill a sketchbook entirely, so I've just pre-ordered your book and I promise to myself I will fill it to the end when I receive it!
Lol, well that was not the response one would expect.
@Feta do u need an exorcist
i absolutely love this channel. you guys are always doing creative things that are actually entertaining, and its pretty clear that SO MUCH EFFORT goes into everything you do! i've been binging, love it
As an aspiring writer, I can confirm that completing literally ANYTHING, even if I have to force myself to do so, gives me the drive to write longer or better quality works.
As a fellow writer: AMEN
I also threw up a reddit thread for folks to give me interesting critter ideas, but they lean toward things like cats playing blackjack, and monkey pharmacists.

"If I don't put pressure on myself, I won't get anything done."
Well, it bloody well worked. You got... a looooot... ... ...
Thanks for the warning. I slowed down the video to 0.25 for that part!
The pause button, my friend. I use it all. The. Time.

This is so motivating and impressive. I wasn't expecting you to go through that much effort for each page!!

The creativity of artists continually amazes me. Well done, Martina.
How she only spent less than half an hour for each page but it all still turned out as a masterpiece is beyond me!! Amazing art!
One of my design classes was just about filling a page in half an hour. It's just practice, really.
I can totally relate to the part when she starts the sketchbooks and never finishes😅. Congrats! This is a beautiful beautiful sketchbook!
As much as I love to draw/paint/create, I was never able to do so consistently. Your video made me realise one thing - I can set myself a tight goal and race against time and get so much more practice done this way! I'm starting to gather ideas now, maybe I'll be able to challenge myself this weekend :D
Wow! Just wow!! These drawings are so pretty! The wave is my favorite! Looks like it was a lot of hard work. Good job!

12:49 and 14:23 are my favorite ones! But what I enjoyed the most was watching you draw and paint in such varied styles and palettes :)
