Every time I hear you say that you may have overestimated your skill level I smile because I know that this is another project that you are going to knock out of the park. My observation is that like water, you tend to rise to whatever level is necessary to achieve your goal. You are amazing, and after sharing your channel with my twelve-year-old (who is also an artist) she has started greeting me with "skjera bagera" in the mornings.

The thing is, she takes hours and hours for tiny details, several days in total. She is going slow to reevaluate her progress at every step. Her general experience with painting, her vision of the final piece and the careful approach allow her to cancel out the very real inexperience with this specific medium. I wouldn't call it casually. It's a methodic approach that mostly uses her long trained painting skills.

My mother painted in oils so when I started painting, she would take me with her to classes and got me lessons with instructors that were all oil artists. I was in my 30's before I ever tried any other medium and at 65 I still struggle with acrylics. Honestly, if I could afford oils, I would use them all the time. I think with a little practice you will come to like oil better. There are lots of things you can add to oils to make them dry faster or take months to dry, depending on what you are doing. We used to put our pallette and brushes in the freezer inbetween sessions to keep the paint fresh.

    • @EveryThingGirl238

Very true, acrylic is fun for quick projects and layering without smear. But limits you in blending texture.

Totally agreed with you when you said something was off about the fire, the way it blended into a kind of muddy effect, however personally I think you went from one extreme to the other with it. It went from blurry and muddy to vivid and white. I think it would have looked better somewhere in between.

Watercolor is by far the most technically challenging of all the traditional painting medias ( leaving more weird stuff like pyrography out of it). While oils is the most forgiving by far. The counterpart is that Oils is the most logistically intensive, whiel Watercolor the least (you need water and nothing else and do not need even to clean your brushes if you are using synthetics)

One of my favorite things about some of the old masterworks that you can see in museums is to look for the painters trouble spot. The spot where they changed their mind a bunch. There is a self-portrait in the DMA's Wendy and Emery Reeves collection that if you look closely, the artist hated the placement of his hand with the paint pallette. You can see where layered over the original position with his new placement of the hand and pallette.

I am actually amazed at how you managed to pull this off, you went from 0 to 500. Who paints an apple and then makes a freaking dragon?!!!
The lighting is what actually captured me, absolutely love it. And one of the things I've noticed (both when you use acrylics and oil) is how much you actually achieve with very few colors, very intense, I can feel the cold in the scene, when its actually full of fire.

some people say she complains a lot. but i see it more as her expressing the anxieties that a lot of us creator types have, and then she's showing how she talks herself out of those anxieties and into getting the project done, which i think is more helpful than acting like she has no anxieties at all. cuz now the viewers who likely say the same things to themselves when wanting to try something new, can hear what to tell themselves to take that first step, and the next one etc. I bought some Sculpey cuz i wanted to try it out. and for the first couple of years (yes, years) i made the odd little thing, but never baked anything for fear of messing it up (because Sculpey no Cheapey) eventually i just did it headfirst. And since baking my first bit, i haven't stopped making stuff, from mini batman busts, to mini cuphead figures and so on. and i found that i have an affinity for making small sculptures and that im not half bad. so all those years i convinced myself not to do it, were for nothing. so now, my 10 year old box of Sculpey (yup, I've had it that long now) is finally getting put to good use. and its thanks to watching youtubers like Nerdforge, and North of the Border, and seeing how they work through those anxieties that we all have when wanting to try something new, or when we inevitably make a mistake while trying something new.

I think it looks amazing and it's more impressive considering that it's your first time with oils. Ir happens the same to me, I only paint in acrylics and gouache and fils oils kinda intimidating, I haven't tried them yet. Btw, I think the thing that looks weird on the painting (and I've noticed you did the same thing on other paintings) is that you're painting a red/orange color on top of tje blue to simulate the light from the fire but the red/orange your using is actually darker in value than the original blue tone, so it doesn't actually looks like a light source but just red paint. I think you sould make everything darker before applying the light and saturated orange tones on top of it to make the effect of fire light :). Keep up the great work, I love your channel!

Wonderful First Oil Painting! I have been enjoying your videos for a couple years now. I have been painting in oil for 30+ years so here is my tip for anyone who really likes acrylic paint: Do a complete underpainting in acrylic monochrome: Dark to light and every mid tone in between... [ and Ballpoint pens work for fine line under sketches as well! ]. Make certain the acrylic underpainting is completely dry (a week or two) When you finally commit to laying on oil paints, use an ALKYD medium such as Winsor & Newton Liquin to speed up the oil drying process (often oil paints cut with Liquin can set up to the to the touch in less than a day, allowing added glazing or shading etc.). Best of all you can use Liquin to create transparent color glazes that allow the acrylic painting underneath to show or shine through! :-) Acrylic first... Oil Next. This may be obvious but do NOT use acrylic on top of oil... it will simply not stick. Cheers!

I have never been artistic at all, but about a year ago I started watching someone restore art and it piqued my curiosity so I bought some cheap oils and a cheap folding easel from Walmart. (I would actually recommend buying the cheap oils from Hobby Lobby when they are on the weekly ad at half off. The WM oils were so horrible I almost gave up.) I am still no artist and I am not producing masterpieces, but putting brush to canvas is now one of my favorite things in the world to do.

I am not sure, but I think the apple she did came from the same tutorial here on youtube that I followed for my first successful painting. Even with next to no talent, I have seen enough improvement in my skills that I no longer want to hide all my paintings when anyone comes around.

I highly recommend going back to some Bob Ross videos with oil paints instead of acrylics. You'll get a better feel for blending and even layering with oil, and of course the result is always something someone will want in their home

It’s interesting that every medium has its own method of use. For instance, when using watercolors we usually leave the white and bright areas on the canvas without painting them, or painting them last. It’s great experiencing the different mediums… playing with them 😃😃😃

I have a hate/love for oil paint, you can do a lot of things with it that you can't with acrylic like blending and your able to get some texture with it, where acrylic is flat. But it takes so long to dry, and I'm a order in the chaos person so it gets everywhere when I use it, lol

I think the thing that is wrong with the dragon scales is the highlights are white. They should reflect the colour of the light source on top of the blue scales so Orange, Yellow and with some Green ( yellow on blue) tinting.

If dry time is an issue, you can just use galkyd to speed up the dry time. Will still take a day to dry depending on the amount of paint you apply. If not, then waiting is best, otherwise cracking can happen.

This is really good. So...some art student tips (basic shit that they teach you on day 1) start ur canvas with a very wet, transluscent wash so your canvas is never white. In this case it would be blue. Mix your own blacks (which I'm sure you already know). I taught myself how to make my own colors using only primary colors so I don't spend crazy money on a full set of oils. You have unmatched skill...trust me if you hone it you will only want to use oils and acrylics will feel like plastic garbage. All the great masters were oil painters for a reason. Also experiment with damar varnishes it really helps ur colors shine, and blacks look amazing. :) Keep doing what you do! I love your work!

Oil paint definitely seems like the teacher every perfectionist needs.
It has a curious way, by it's very nature, of teaching the artist that the end result is protean. It will change, and it will morph, and the beauty is in the journey, not the grandeur of the finished piece. The parts you repaint, the layers that never seem to quite erase the ones that came before; they're there to teach you that the 'mistake' was a part of the whole. It's not a step back, it's a step in an unexpected direction.
In your case, unsurprisingly, both the journey and the finished piece are incredible.
Keep safe, keep shining. We can wait. It's always worth it

My first "successful" painting was an apple just like that, quite possibly from the same tutorial. I painted it about a year ago and it still has a place of honor on my wall as one of my favorites. I am no artist, but I do enjoy painting with oils even though I have very little talent. I started with oils and then attempted acrylics, but they were so different from the oils I was familiar with that I couldn't even get out a low quality beginners painting with them.
That dragon looks amazing. The impasto on the flames is beautiful. The use of impasto takes a bold touch that I haven't developed yet, though as my confidence builds I hope to be able to add that style of brushwork to my tool box.

you might be interested to know that us nerdy scale modelers use oils extensively to weather and bring depth to the vehicle or aircraft we are modelling. The medium allows for some interesting fade effects which acrylics just will not do. Typically though, we will allow a squirt of paint so sit on a piece of cardboard for 45 minutes or so, so that much of the oil base is drawn out of the paint, being absorbed by the cardboard. So it gives you a little more control, and less drying time. One thing I like about using oils for this is that if you screw it up, you can simply wipe it all away and start over....

Oil gives you a lot of options, you can use the slow drying aspect to do blending or you can use additives and it will dry quickly and you can do washes, layers. I didn't have any doubts that you'd do a great job, you have talent, the medium is just how to get your vision out. Give you props for actually finishing it that quick. When I get into an painting -- i'm in it for months, that's sorta good and bad about oils, you can almost never be done, you can keep adding or removing/scraping away what you don't like.

Honestly, I think what you may be seeing up close that was creating issues is due to the more stylized lighting with the flame and magic being opposing colors and there being issues that getting close creates when you do that.
Interactions of multiple light colors when painting is a pain in the rear to get right on the details, and when you step back, the specific details fade into the whole. Especially with a canvas of that size.

My favorite paint medium is actually oil paint. Though not for painting pictures, because I have no skill with that. I like using oil paint to paint wooden items, like bird houses. It takes several days for it to dry properly, so you need somewhere you can hang whatever wood you're painting on that will keep dust and hair in the air away from it or else it'll end up sealed into the wood. But once it's dry, it also seals the wood and the color is so deep and thorough but it also doesn't cover the grain because it soaks into the wood! It ends up looking like you dyed the wood before you put it together.

Also, try using glazes when the painting is fully dry., this will enhance the colours depending on what colours you choose. Have a play around and enjoy.

Oil happens to be my favorite type of paint because of the reasons you lamented at the beginning: it dries super slow! More time for over-thinking, over-analyzing, and blending. Less waste because you can use the same oil next day if stored properly. And I personally just love how it feels to mix and paint with on a textural level: thick and absolute. It won't drip once applied to the canvas. It definitely takes more skill and patience to use oil though.

Wet on wet is not easy. You really knocked it off! I would recommend to prep the canvas to make the painting last for generations. Also, oil paintings don't look good up close, and that is the trick. You can just suggest shapes and make tem look realistic from a distance. Also, oil paintings get darker with time, you could try go lighter next time unless you're going full Caravaggio with the dark colors. A coat of varnish will show more depht after the painting is dry. For a first time with this medium, you went above and beyond. Truly impressive.
