"Screams like a devil, sings like an angel"
A truly otherworldly talent, Chester Bennington's studio and live performances both cut straight into you. They are so intense... So engaging... Painful and empathetic.
In this video, you have the opportunity to walk with me through the isolated vocal studio recordings for "Given Up", one of Chester's most incredible songs. You will hear, in its purest form, his screams, his transitions and some production aspects that subtly enhance the magic coming out of this vocalist.
Be inspired as you work through this with me
The best thing about that famous scream is Mike said Chester was on point vocally that day and during editing he had to lengthen the backing part of the song around it because Chester held the note longer than he was supposed to, just epic
Oh now that is awesome!
Eminem would probably say something akin to "hey, welcome to the club of singers who don't need to breathe" 😁
Also hearing chester's voice isolated like this makes me miss him so damn much
Agreed
I requested for this video and here it is...thanks Chris... thanks a lot
You're so welcome!
@@chrisliepe Are you doing requests. Dave's Monkey Wrench rant please. One last thing before I quit . . . . Is it all one breath ?
You are the best vocal coach ever
Thanks! Glad you love the content!
Chester Bennington was so connected to music its insane, what a legend.
Best singer ever!!!!!
So many have been inspired by him, while trying their own stuff, it goes to show how much he is to the Metal Genre!
Vocal chain:
Saturation, EQ, slight Compression, Room Reverb, slight Chorus, Hall Reverb, short and centered Delay
The "UUUUUUUHHHHHP" is so damn hard that's one of the magic things Chester could do that Almost no ones can replicate. Crazy mixed voicings with power behind it to boot.
I have been waiting for this Chester Bennington break down for Given Up! You definitely hit the nail on the head when you mentioned he is one of THE BEST aggressive singers. Very great video demonstration, I enjoyed it very much.
So glad!
Dude, you are the 1st and only person I have come across that I feel has the "right" to analyse Chester. #respect
Mike Shinoda said he apparently screamed not long enough, then he screamed for way too long! Then they managed to settle on this version (I can’t remember where i read this so someone pls confirm or disprove)
He screamed way too long and Mike knew it was something special so he reconstructed the song to fit the full length scream.
*I will link you to where mike discusses this if I can remember where it is.
@@caitbat9740 I've heard this as well. he went way too long so they extended the instrumentation behind his scream to keep the entire thing
@@caitbat9740 Thank you!
It's in the documentary/making of minutes to midnight
You should do your own vocal recording to this song man!
"One of the best aggressive vocalists ever" Hard agree. This is also probably the best insight into any vocal performance I've seen on youtube, and you have the pipes to back up the words and demonstrate. Very well done all around. Respect my man
edit: had to sub, your interaction is awesome dude. i think you are just an awesome person lol, and definitely an expert, aficionado, lover of music. dunno how to put it into one word, but your passion comes through in your videos and the way you perform. you touched on every aspect of this performance perfectly and you put yourself into understanding it, if that makes any sense. this is a great tribute to Chester
#ripchesterbennington I LOVE how you do the gritty sound and then go back to talking ALOT OF PEOPLE, cant really push and get the sound they want and then talk the same right after... Props my guy!
This is the perfect format. A combination of dry/unenhanced vocals to hear how to get the right tone matched with production techniques to get what you hear on the record. Amazing stuff man.
Glad you like it!
Its the truth that every song that he sang he’s screaming that voice out all the way from his heart. Each and every notes songs he was reallly suffocating 😢😢😢😢
Gonna miss him forever ❤❤❤
Just shows why Chester was so special. Made everything feel so natural. So hard to replicate. What a talent.
This was masterfully done Chris. Its breakdowns like this that make me appreciate Chester's complete control of his voice. Very well done!
Thanks! So glad you enjoyed!
I could spend my life listening to Chester's vocals and analyze them word by word!!! Thanks for sharing this Chris! I'm definitely a fan of you ❤
Glad you enjoyed it!
I know nothing about singing and not trying to sing. Looked at this video because it's for Chester. You explained everything so its easy to understand. You are very good at demonstrating what Chester was doing with his vocals and explaining how he was doing it. Very cool to see you break it down in a technical way and then show how to do it. I can tell you are a good teacher and coach.
Cover more Chester, please Chris!!
Amazing man!!! If Linkin Park ever does a tribute show for Chester again you should definitely be a part of that 💪🤘
More Chester is what I want, also Evanescence!
Was waiting for this forever!!!
And finally!!!
Thank you Chris!
God bless!!
Enjoy!
YES!!! Thank you very much!
The thing I love about the long bridge scream on this is it's a top-tier performer operating at the very edge of his capabilities and still nailing it. D5 isn't just a high note for him to scream, it's (I think) the highest note he hits on anything in the LP discography. The only other D5 I can think of is a clean head voice, maybe even falsetto one he hits on one of the harmony parts in the bridge of In My Remains.
It was also such a challenging thing for him to do live that he usually split the scream into two sections with a delay effect to kind of fill the gap. Whenever he actually pulled it off, it was always a big deal in the fan community.
This video really got me pumped! After I discovered Audioslave, i found Linkin Park. Given Up was the first song i heard by them, and now it’s *stuck in my head again.*
same this song stuck in my head because of the intro.
Legendary 23:01 ❤️
Wow this is hands down the best vocal lesson I ever seen. People need to use effects more often in lessons you showed us exactly how to hit the right note the right way without the effects and then enhanced it once you felt comfortable hittin the raspy note. Thanks!
THE BEST SCREAM OF ALL TIME I LOVE YOU CHESTER
WOW - OK, this is my new favorite breakdown LOL
I am just now finding your videos. I appreciate chesters voice SO much more now that I'm understanding the way he's singing. He was incredible and I miss him everyday
This was so beautiful. He was able to replicate this live for a while too . My sister was at one of the shows where they recorded the video . He did the 17 second scream there . Thanks for making this video dude
I'm pre-approved for a Linkin Park tribute band, and that's 70% thanks to your videos. I'll have the audition (with 3 other singers) on the first or second week of February. Wish me luck!
NICE
Chester was the best vox ever and you're the best vocals teacher there is now
Also, your face reacting to the live scream lel
hehe... Thanks so much!
Yes, Chris is the best vocal teacher on youtube.
This is crazy man. I was literally sat on me break in work rewatching your first Chester vid thinking "wish he did another one". Ty google for listening to my thoughts
Ha.. GREAT!
@@chrisliepe signed up to your vocal course today too mate, looking forward to giving the first lesson a go :)
99% of vocal screamers do it wrong. Chester did it correctly. Always. But with chester. His voice and scream will never be matched. He could scream in a split sec to a angelic softness and somtimes mix the two! Epic. What raw talent he had!
Thanks for breaking down the "how" in his screams, I think it clicked for me!
(I’m sure many are curious, so I’m just gonna drop this here)
23:00
SO much to be taken from this video, such a good one
It's amazing how close to the sound you get at certain parts in the video. Love your content
Thank you!
Maybe try the song Mark the Graves next, also by Linkin Park. It shows Chester's vocal versatility even more!
This is a great format! It's very focused which means tons of detail and honestly very helpful. M Shadows on Critical Acclaim or Almost Easy would be so awesome!
Yessss I’ve been waiting for this one 🥺
i've been waiting for this video, thaks man!
YESSS Ive waited a long time for this
I was so waiting for this!!!
I’ve always thought Chester was one of the best singers I’ve ever heard, I never thought about how it did it or understood why or how he did what he did but this video does a fantastic job of explaining why Chester was so incredible to somebody who knows literally nothing about singing or anything to do with it whatsoever. Man I wish I could sing like that, I would never speak normally for the rest of my life, every word would be singing lol
God, this takes me back. *Really* appreciated the in-depth breakdown and insight!
Really appreciate these contents Chris. They're super helpful.
Thanks for covering Chester again. Was a lot of fun to watch.
This was amazing Chris. Thanks so much for this breakdown dude!
Thank you for this video Chris!!
FINALLY! I'mma start watching the video now.
Good! Enjoy! :)
Wow this is great Chris, I was literally just singing this and now here you are with every singing tip I would ever need. Thanks for your awesome work!
Uncredible break down + i love that song ,that's all i was looking for on you tube years ago .Thank you
I'm always amazed with the amount of detail and respect you put on your videos. Thank you very much to bring this to us!
YES!!! This video is a life saver
Another amazing work Chris , cheers from Brazil !
You're a legend for this one Chris
I love these isolated vocal videos🖤
I’VE NEVER CLICKED ON A VIDEO SO FAAAAST!!! Great job, Chris!
NICE
chris i wish you would do more videos on chester's vocals!! i'm obsessed with how dynamic his voice is and i loved your breakdown of it here
Finally! Finally, someone doing a breakdown of this song! And does it like a boss 💪🏻
Great job Chris. I love Chester!
2022 and my new LP tattoo brought me here to appreciatte Chester's legacy one more time. Thanks for this awesome job!!!
This channel deserves 1 million subscribers!
Thanks Chris!
Brazil love u
Got chills when you nailed the GOOOODDDDDDDDDDDDDD scream after working into it.
21:22 That was really impressive, Chris!
You are a really voice master.
Thanks!
I was so excited, i commented first instead of watching it!
Thanks a lot, Chris!
For the first time i got distortion in my voice today, all thanks to your amazing lessons. Thank you for doing everything that you do chris
Chris, you're the best coach on UA-cam! Thx a lot!!! 🙏🙏🙏
The vocal break thing you do in your videos Really helped me understand my vocals better...in just seconds of trying your aggressive techniques I've found a technique better than the 10 years of shitty experience I have...I'll be incorporating this into my music now thankyou
Chester is one of the best. Nice breakdown Chris!
Amazing Video Chris 😍😍😍
I loved it.
I'm a huge fan of LP and ofc Chester Bennington, and this approaches me more to his technique which I love very much. Keep making amazing material 👌👌👌👌
Your videos were the one thing I needed to break through the ceiling I've been stuck under for years. For a long time, I sang nothing but clean notes and was told numerous times that I have a really good voice, but singing the same way all the time made it boring to me. A few months ago, I started looking into how to do vocal fry and screaming, but I didn't know I was doing it wrong until yesterday, which is when I found your channel. Thank you for the lessons and thank you for saving my voice from any further damage.
Love the channel. You are very helpful and explain everything so well. You're a hell of a singer too. In this video, you mention Johnathan Davis. I've been waiting ever since I subscribed for you to do a video like this about his vocals.
I love this breakdown video. All of this insight into Chester's technique is amazing. I like how you've also discussed the production side of things. Thanks so much Chris! I would love to see a breakdown of Tim Armstrong of Rancid and Aimee Interrupter of The Interrupters.
Great video, as always!!!
You said best time and time again.. they truly are...
ARTISTS 🎨
Awesome, probably my favourite tutorial you’ve done.
You're honestly the best vocal coach on UA-cam, hands down!
I've learned so much from just listening to Chester, I take most of my inspiration from him
You are Blessed Sir Chris Liepe...❤🙏🙏💞 Very Talented .... May God bless you 🙏❤✨♥💖💕
Teaching myself how to scream death metal screams and punk screams have exponentially helped my understanding of how to use my voice , i try to mimic mostly but I definitely have my own style , but useing my mimic i feel it helped me expand my range
man your whole channel... what youre doin here is beyond comprehension. seriously, all the magic you reveal with all your work here.
Im usually the most sceptic guy on buying advice stuff on the internet, I never have and never will be doing that, but the realness of your stuff really makes me consider this. makin an exception. what you give away for free actually makes me feel guilty for not paying for this anyway
You're the *man* for analyzing this song, especially in a way that a baritone would have to approach it. We have to do what works for our bodies, and full chest is how a baritone messes up their voice for a song like this. But that's ok to do a different approach. It might sound a bit different, but none of us were going to have the same sound as Chester anyway. Not even most tenors.
Amazing content dude !
Omg omg I've waited for this video for so long!!!! So pumped right now! Thank you)
You're so welcome!
Chester's "Pent up air" style of singing is how I normally scream... Is that alright or should I change my ways? Also, awesome video as always, Chris.
Totally good! I do that a lot as well... a great way to save those primary cords and get some cool sounds!
This is a great video with great insight! Really explained and executed thank you it has made me feel like having a go myself!
i cant believe we get all this for free !!! THANKS CHRIS !!!
This guy's amazing
You’re a magician the way you teach!
Fairly new subscriber but I love your videos so much! I've been addicted!
This is awesome!
This video is INCREDIBLE! I’ve been studying your videos a LOT recently, and it’s helping me so much! Thank you Chris 🙌🏼🎵
You're so welcome!
You are amazing!! ❤️
Love unpacking! Great job brother!
THANKS!
I love this type of analysis, thanks!!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
So awesome Chris, thank you man!! I didn’t realize you did this video, I actually requested some Chester a month ago, this is awesome!
Not sure if you’ll see this, but if you jot down any requests, I would personally love to see your take on Chesters vocals for “Waiting for the end”. Such an amazing vocal. Also Incubus’s Brandon Boyd on the song “If Not Now When”. Anyway, I appreciate you man, thanks for these awesome breakdowns, I really feel like I’m learning a lot from them. Rock on brotha!
-Brian Taylor
I am beyond psyched for this. I'll be watching this one many times for sure. I've already learned so much from you my man, including unlocking mixed voice. Really hoping to give back and check out your courses in 2021! Your work is appreciated!
That'd be great! Thanks for watching :)
Wow. You have such an amazing talent in vocal analysis and deconstructing its elements in a reproducible way. Thank you so much for all your work. I'm so going to check out all your other contents.
Thanks for watching... Welcome to the channel!
