he changed his live technique to a less gritty and more clean later on in his career. If you listen to the same track live during meteora era he sings it as on the record. You actually never find more then double track on all lp records. For instance the power section in "in the end" is the most gritty and porwerful section of the song yet it's only single track while the chorus is doubled. His ability to sound really musical with a lot of pitch while singing really aggressive was definitely his trademark.
It has always also amazed me how Chris can sing other singers music in his natural voice and makes it seem that the song is just as great when he does it, meanwhile not overshadowing what the original artist has done.
It’s crazy to think how much Chester accomplished, personally. He grew up idolizing people like Chris and went on to perform with them and earn their respect and friendship.
The way he glissandos his way across the verse in such a minor, off pace way is - iconic. I don't recall ever hearing a singer like Cornell in that way.
This was great Chris! You really brought out the characteristics, the humbleness, the interactions of Chester and Cornell and how they both connected with the audience. What a special friendship they had. Thank you Chris!
@@chrisliepe You're amazing Chris!. You are such an inspiration to so many singers and musicians such as myself, in which you communicate in a very unique and heartfelt way both in your singing and in your lessons. I'm sure everyone who has experienced your courses and videos agree 100%
Back when this first came out, I was blown away by the chemistry of their voices. This has to be one of the definitive duets in Rock history. Kinda sad, that it only ever was a live bootleg. That as a bonus track for an album or a live DVD with one performance from that tour would have been absolutely ridiculous.
It was my childhood friend’s funeral today, similar circumstances. Perfect tribute to remember the wonderful singers/musicians we have all lost. Thank you.
Maaaaannn, I love this performance so much. It's incredibly how relaxed Chris Cornell is throughout this song. I love how he's trying not to overpower Chester in this song.
RIP Chester. There’s been deaths that hit me hard. But he is the only musician, or celebrity period, whose death has made me cry. It hit me really hard, still does
man I'm so glad you chose this version of the song. this was so special... the hunger strike version they did together was also amazing. I was so amazed when I first heard it like 15 years ago
There's almost something eerie about this performance knowing how things would pan out honestly. This song is about being persistently uncomfortable and in pain in life. To have them both singing it, together... it really takes your breath away.
@5:51 Linkin Park did this number with Chris' appearance on stage during Crawling throughout that entire tour, so the superfans who followed their every move probably knew. You might even notice that the camera guy is already pointing his lens toward the side of the stage where Chris is about to come from in anticipation of this.
If I'm not mistaken, this was shot in Charlotte in 2008. I was fortunate enough to be there. Chester also came out and did Hunger Strike with Chris during his set. There's a video of that too, I believe.
Great video again Chris, thanks. For me... 20th July is always a day filled with joy and music. I think Chester wouldn't have it any other way. I'm certain he would totally approve of this.
Your genuine enjoyment makes the videos really fun to watch. I saw that they embraced as Cornell sang "as I stand beside my own reflection." Best buddies.
I was fortunate enough to have seen Nine Inch Nails and Soundgarden when they toured together in 2014. Hard to believe that was a decade ago and the last time I'd see Cornell live with Soundgarden. Easily one of the best shows I've ever been to.
Thank you Chris. I watched the live version video and then your reaction was recommended, so I just finished it. Your comments were 100% my thoughts from watching minutes earlier, so thank you for unconsciously agreeing with me. I'm serious though man, from Chris' classy & humble entrance right down to hugging his buddy! That doesn't mention our agreement on the technical differences in their voices. Sadly, I really think Chester had found the big brother he'd been needing his entire life when he found Chris, that's pure brotherly love man, and now it's just very, very sad. When Chris Cornell passed, my wife and 3 grown sons did NOT want to tell me man. I am a baritone, and my wife swears I sound like Chris Cornell, I'll humbly accept in the lower octaves. Haha. Also, everytime I play/sing Hunger Strike my wife and sons think its the radio. Without fail. Still unfortunately, I can't make it into the stratosphere. I had worked almost three years straight doing vocal exercises, with the sole purpose of being able to sing those high parts like Chris Cornell and now like Chris Liepe does. Nearly 3 years of expanding my range to sound more like Chris. A 3 year steady diet of Temple of the Dog, Mad Season, Soundgarden, Audioslave, Chris' Solo stuff, then my family had to break the news to me when he left us. I was CRUSHED man. I was also an STP/ Scott Weiland fan, he was my second favorite rock singer from my generation. So that sucked too. I sang 11 or 12 stp songs in the last band I was in. But after Chris' passing, I did not sing, I did not hum or even whistle for 2-1/2 years. So I'd lost any gains I'd made and then some. When I found your channel I started easing into it again, you really are inspiring man, so hang in there please. My voice is still not were it was 10 years ago, much less 4, but it is coming back. Your tribute to Chris "The Day I Tried to Live" blew my mind brother. Well I could go on for days, so I'll shut up now. Peace & Thank you Sincerely. - Russ Jarman
I always love your videos Chris I'm glad to see this up it's not just about their voices and the band but about a universal bond of friendship and it's a life lesson to just observe everyone there that night. Thanks a lot.
Was just watching this video a couple of weeks ago, it's an amazing performance. Great insight as always and love the passion you bring to these videos as well, so cool.
I think the audience knew he was coming out purely based the camera person already aiming the camera towards the stage where the great man walks out from!
I know this is late after the fact. But being a lucky person that got to witness this. We had no idea Chris was coming out. Chester had already come out to do Hunger Strike. Definitely didn't see them doing it again . Incredible
You spoke on Chester's "boyish" tone here and I just had a thought that it's interesting he sang in such an innocent tone but at the same time also portrayed such lyrics of negative self - conflict at the same time. it's an contradicting blend . it's the equivalent of someone pretending they're all good but than in-between the lines you see there is much more going on internally that they are struggling with.
Man, the first time I saw this video of these two performing together, knowing what happens to them both 9 years later, I was like "I'm not gonna cry, I'm not gonna do it, I'm not gonna-😢😭😭"
I can't watch that because I never got to see Chester live. And just now, tears came up. I kept wanting to buy tickets, but at one point, they were too expensive for me. I have regretted it to this day.
One thing that thins out Chester's voice during these live performances is that he's constantly cupping his mic. Chris doesn't do that (in this performance, I know he did it sometimes) and you can hear how much more dynamic/open he sounds. It makes the contrast between their voices so much bigger.
Hi Chris! I really love what you do here! It's such a pleasure watching these videos :) I just wanted to point out that Chris sang the chorus the way he did (lower) because that's how Aaron Lewis did it in the Reanimation album with Chester. This backing harmony was utilized before..but with respect towards Aaron, I absolutely LOVE Chris's rendition of it! He found a way to still make it his own! Happy Birthday Chris, and RIP to you and Chester
If you go back and listen to crawling Live from the early 00s he does with full grit. Particularly house of blues 2000. I think he decided to play it clean as he got older.
Chris, please, PLEASE do a video on Dan Tompkins, the vocalist for TesseracT, and ex-vocalist of Skyharbor. He truly is amazing, and I think you he very impressed by him. I'm sure a lot of people would love to hear your thoughts on him. I sure would.
So i didnt make it through all 128 comments so if this is already stated I apologize. Couple things, yes, the crowd should have know Cornell was coming out, as they did Hunger Strike together earlier in this show (Projekt Revolution Tour). Cornell took the low part in the chorus because he sang the Aaron Lewis part from the Reanimation Album. Dope reaction.....love LP reactions.
Hi Chris! I am your student and I am really happy you get to make videos about my favourite singers! I have one I would really love to have you break down his technique: Tilian Pearson from Dance Gavin Dance. He is my favourite living singer! 😄🎤
Hey Chris, I love The Dreadnoughts, and I'd love to hear what you think about them. I think I've noted them before in a comment, but since you mentioned giving suggestions for videos, I thought I'd shout em' out again. So, a vocal breakdown of Nich would be awesome. If you haven't listened to them before, they are a folk punk band. Great energy! Thanks, you rock!
I have been thinking, I would REALLY like to see you do two artists, two of my favs and two with powerful voices in different ways. Tim McIlrath of Rise Against, and Michael Poulson of Volbeat. Both have such dynamics in their respective voices, would make a couple great videos, I think. Thanks again man, as always.
Today's Chris Cornell's birthday and the day when Chester passed away. Great video as always. Thank you Chris
A fitting time of reflection for the day!
do you think chester planned it that way? so it would be on chris' birthday? or do you think it was just a coincidence
I personally don't find it to be a coincidence. @@brookeCarron
I've always loved Chester's "real-oooooooooooohoooh" at the end on this version.
Ya! So REAL :)
Two of the best vocalists ever in rock/metal in my opinion We miss them deeply :( Thank you for this video

Man. I literally got chills when Chris and Chester hugged on stage. Thanks for paying tribute to them with this video man. It means a lot.
It’s crazy to think how much Chester accomplished, personally. He grew up idolizing people like Chris and went on to perform with them and earn their respect and friendship.
If you can sing harmony you can sing anything
Even Cornell's final "Thank you!" before running off the stage was in the key of the song.
YES
Chris Cornell sings like a man strolling through the park..he is the Andy Dufresne of vocalists.
Love that analogy! One of my favorite movies too!

I agree... never expected myself to get so emotional every year over these two singers that I'd never met.
The harmonies between them two and the thickness of Chris' vocals underneath Chester's power is so chilling
Both chester and Chris were very humble respectful individuals thus why they were naturally friends

My frequent Jam song. I love doing such distorted screams during the chorus. RIP Chester!
Been waiting for this. I love Chris's harmonies on this. Great video Chris and thanks for your enthusiasm and wisdom on this sad day.
