    I get lots of questions like: "Is it ok to be hoarse after screaming?" or "I have to cough after doing a really aggressive line" or "Is it ok if I feel burning in my throat?? The answers to all of these questions is a big NO! But knowing how something shouldn't feel isn't as helpful as knowing how it SHOULD FEEL! I'll discuss where certain sensations should be coming from, address some of these common questions and help you dial in the FEEL of your aggressive singing so you can do so confidently!

    Perfect timing on this vid! Only Chris' tutorials helped me understand how my body should feel when screaming, and how to do it starting from zero skill level to boot. Too many folks who know how to do it aren't as skilled at bridging the gap, and they tend to just throw out a bunch of industry jargon. I always appreciate more of your tips to help me build on my foundation

    dear Chris, an Italian fan here.
    46 yeats old, I have been singing for decades but so far I had always thought that grit was simply not expected by my type of voice. I discovered your channel and started to watch your super interesting videos, especially since I started tio sing grunge. As a female, it is already weird, let alone with a clean voice. I started experimenting but with low success AT THE BEGINNING
    It was frustrating, since like many singers, one would want to reach results almost immediately😂but you were definitely right about: it takes time, you have to listen to the sensations, to your body, etc.
    after around two months a sort of "click" happened and the grit was there, more and more effortless. Incredibly, to me, now I am able to master grit with zero problems, without tiring my voice.
    In my experience, the keys have been: push more with the belly!!! and relax, and the location of the vocal fry... now I don't have to think, it comes naturally. so THANK YOU THANK YOU AND THANK YOU, you have been and you are a GREAT teacher and insopration

    when i started testing growls i went off of jared dine's tutorial for lows which to my surprise didnt really hurt. my problem was with highs because i didnt realize that the highs come from almost the same "place" as my lows. if that makes sense. all the same support as you said. it really is something you just have to feel

    Learning to sing is like learning an instrument. When I started to teach myself screaming a couple of weeks ago, I had to realize that I although have to work on my normal singing voice. So learning the aggressive style really helps me to develop my normal singing voice.

    Always love the videos Chris! As everyone said, the way you break down how things should feel is awesome. One of the few channels that actually makes sure you know you’re doing things right. I think it would be cool to see a technique break down on bands like Thy Art is Murder or a similar tier of vocals? I listen to a lot of metal, and when I met CJ and he seemed to have a really great, safe for the vocal chords technique. Though I’ve always wondered if vocals like that are sustainable?

    To learn how to scream, I basically imagined that I had to create a false chord in my throat, at the same time forcing a lot my "poop muscles". As I create that false chord with the respective distortion created by the false chord (which means, the right little compression in a specific place in my throat), I just had to manage how to keep it very consistent.
    A long warm up is really necessary too. Nothing will flow if I don't warm up for this. Imagining, warming up is to open all the way up from your muscles to out of your mouth so you can build this way exactly the way you want.

    The feel of how you should use your diaphragm is explained well, but what isn’t clear if your not familiar with any of that, is the end half of this video of what it should feel like when the vocal break is engaged and combined with the resonance which kinda feels like it’s something people will only understand it if they can already create the distortion anyways, but for someone who is trying to figure out it, it’s like giving them a science formula

    Know this point is about the Breath Support, Nasal(Pharyngeal), and one of things that important is Soft Palette, and placement back sound we make it (imo), thks chris with sound you call "a tarzan voice" in another video i know that's the concept of Distortion, Grit and my false chords sound more relax i've than before

    Hey Chris, any tips or ideas on how to “shift gears” when moving from chest voice, to mixed voice to falsetto and back down? I really struggle with flowing between voice types and don’t know what to do to change that.

    I don't know if you will see this Chris, but as I'm watching this video over and over again I keep coming to the conclusion that it would be so beneficial if you could literally show where should I feel it on a cross section of a vocal tract. You explain everything in a very understandable way, I think I'm doing everything right, but I still feel such dryness that it hurts. So obviously I'm doing it wrong. EDIT (Jesus you did a video of your vox scope I can't look at that 😂)

    Hi Chris, I want to thank you again and support you on what you're doing. I've learned alot from you and my journey in singing involved a lot of your videos, I think I wouldn't have come as far as I have without you, so thanks. Perhaps if my understanding is correct you could explain this part of distortion as seeing your stomach and throat as a bellow. Adding more pressure to the bellows below increase the outcome of the air coming out. Try to add distortion on top of that and bang! Pitchless scream! I hope that helps anyone scrolling through the comment section trying to figure this out. Remember if it hurts its not the right way, find your painless intensity and sing your heart out.     Hi, Chris. I'm struggling to get this 9:06 rasp on. But it goes like what you call the quiet version here instead. I 'm able to produce "resonatefull" forward mixed clean note. But that lushy rasp doesn't appear. What could be a possible solution? Add more release, or compression, or both? :) Thanks

    chris! i Would love if you could make a video talking about how to keep a low larynx during high mix head voice notes!, it makes the sounds so much more natural but i cant control it everytime!

      We don't want to necessarily 'keep' our larynx in any position. By having it free and floating and being able to choose a lower placement or a higher placement, that's the best approach. Sometimes, a low larynx helps us unlock mix, but there are lots of cases where a higher (but not tense) placement is better. Robert Plant, Chris Cornell, Axl Rose all mix with a high larynx placement and they are masters!

    I wouldn’t say there’s “no note” scream because my ear puts in a pitch of some kind when you do that scream whether it’s a mixed in between pitch or what, but it’s a tone of some kind still.

    Amazing video. Please more on this subject. I think i'm doing it on high notes (not shure if right), but in low notes i tend to use the break/pasaggio, but is too low for sing in pasaggio, those are very "chesty zone" notes. What can i do? :(

    Chris, should the poop muscle pushing be closer to what it's like if you tense your stomach before your friend punches you there? This seems more natural to me when I'm going to belt out that glorious note, but seems nothing to do with poop muscles so I'm concerned I'm practicing a bad habit/wrong technique. Love your videos!

    At 9:22 when I transition into "compression" I just start to sound like a wookie at best. I can hear your transition, I believe I'm making that transition too, but I do not retain or gain that kind of grit. Even when I do make grit while sounding like I'm lifting something at that point, it's just a muffled crackle and not grit like that. Am I compressing too much? How can I compress less or whichever way I need to get that different grit?

    Hi Chris, first of all, thank you very much for the insightful video.
    I have a question as I feel the bearing down sensation it is very close to the normal belly squeeze sensation when singing high notes..
    You are talking about intensity and bearing down while gritting and screaming but in my understanding and experience, that's pretty much the same sensation I have when I am singing clean on the high notes. Saying that, what is the difference by the intensity and bearing down in the lower area when you are singing clean and distorted? to be precise, what is the different sensation you have in the belly when you are singing in clean and distorted?

      There should be no difference in the bearing down sensation as far as placement. Only the type of false cord engagement:)

    But Chris, when I am practicing it I feel like it is not as loud or strong as yours. I feel like mine is a falsetto compared to yours. Is it right? If I would hear you whiteout microphones or amplifier would it sound loud?
    I feel like it is not coming from my chest but from my head voice!

      A lot of what you hear in my voice is a built voice over time from using the techniques I outline here. It takes time to dial in the muscle memory based on the sensations you're discovering. You'll get louder and more confident with less tension, but it takes time. Think about shooting free throws in basketball. You don't just learn how to do it and all of a sudden do it really well. you have to practice for years in some cases. Get the muscle memory down. Dedicate your mind to learning correctly and then results come over time.

    I may be confusing two different things, but how do you have that bearing down feeling, but also draw the stomach in ? like the 'ha" sound example where you show your stomach coming like ha ha ha ha type example?

      That bearing down feeling should encourage the 'drawing the stomach in'. Go sit on the toilet and push something out. Your abs actually go 'inward' towards your spine. When you combine the "ha" with this sort of mind-focused approach you get explosive energy!

      Chris, correct me if I am wrong here, but to try and answer Rockstar's question...When you bear down, your stomach naturally tightens up, hence drawing the stomach in. When you inhale, your stomach should extend out, and when you're exhaling while singing, that's when you bear down and the stomach tightens up. The chest should never raise or expand during an inhale, unless you're taking a deep breath, which the stomach extends first, and the the chest and upper torso expands to complete the inhale. It is totally backwards from what we are taught growing up all our lives, so it takes practice until it becomes second nature and you're doing it for your normal breathing. Also, Chris' veins are popping out of his neck because when you bear down, it is just like what happens when you're lifting weights, if done correctly, that is. You're holding back breath when you lift, until mid-rep where you exhale. When we sing, as Chris explains, you're also holding back breath in a controlled way to make the notes. If you didn't hold back breath, then you're just exhaling really fast, and that's where you can make the Ha sounds. Infants do this kind of breathing naturally. That's why they can scream so F'ing loud! LOL For some reason, we lose that as we grow up, until we have to "learn" it again later in life. Hope this helps more than confused you, Rockstar! :)

    I always feel like I'm getting somewhere in the first steps, but as soon as I try to engage my vocal break everything kind of falls apart. I'm not really sure as to what I can consider my vocal break, because I never seem to get that "yodel" when the octaves are changing, I can't feel or hear that little "switch" between notes whenever I sing high, but I do feel it when I sing lower notes. I've recently been able to find my subharmonics register and that kind of helped me get it, and I can do low growls and such, hold a false chord scream for a long time without any pain or dryness or anything, but as soon as I want to make a "higher" scream of sorts (or the pitchless scream, for that matter) I just can't seem to feel it. Could there be something wrong with my voice or my range as it goes higher, or could it be just a matter of control or lack thereof?
    (I'm sorry if some of the sentences should sound weird, english is not my first language)

      I don't think there's anything wrong with your voice. Can you engage a pure head voice in higher notes, like C5 and up??

      Dear Xiao, I think I can help you seeing as I had a similar problem. That yodel you're describing I find easiest to approach imagining throwing up, try and place your notes in front of your mouth instead of in de back. It should sound somewhat comical and almost like you're doing somewhat of a mentally challenged impression, but bear with me it works! When you then try to slide up and down through your notes you'll find your break, you should be able to pinpoint it easily at a normal volume. From there its everything Chris says, bear down on your abdominal muscles and add the distortion on top, you should be able to get a fairly high scream from that, by changing your face shape and increasing the pressure from your abdominal muscles you should be able to control your volume and pitch.     8:35 This is still causing some dry, scratchy feeling in the vocal fry area for me. I've followed along with multiple videos doing the exercises but I can't get past this without discomfort.

    11:25 this part Will hurt my throat or not? I tried to do a scream part of "faint" by Linkin Park. Is there a way to protect your voice from hurting by fry scream?

    I don't know if I'm doing things right, I feel when I scream in my diaphragm but also slightly in my throat and pressure in my head. If I do it too much or push to hard I can get headaches but it might be that I'm trying to far for my range. No idea at this point😂

    i’ve been getting the hang of screaming but after a couple songs i just can’t anymore. Is this something that i am doing wrong or will my endurance increase over time the more i practice. When i started i couldn’t get through a single song now i can get through 3-4

      Tough to answer this without seeing or hearing you... but if you're doing things right and not feeling pain... (everything in moderation) you'll gain endurance over time.

    Now we have all these informations about the techniques at our finger tips. Thanks to guys like Chris, Ken etc. It's amazing to realize that back in the days, all the self-taught legendary vocalists like Cornell, Hetfield, Eddie etc never had access to all these informations when they started singing and they just went with their instincts and sang better than the world. 🔥

    Does vibrato act different with a scream? I hear all my favorite singers hit these screams with vibrato, James Brown, Wilson Pickett, Stevie Wonder...I can vibrato the pure head voice, but as soon as I add fry I lose the vibrato.

      Vibrato can and should feel like it's operating independently of compression/grit/screaming :)

      @@chrisliepe Thanks man. I never thought of in like that. I will keep that in mind when I'm singing. Maybe I should try and start out with a powerful pure head voice note with vibrato and then slowly add the grit to that. I feel like whatever it is that I'm doing above my cords, that sometimes I go to exteme with it. When I am less extreme it works great, if I'm max extreme with it I can barely get sound to come out. I think its related to holding back air, because when I lean into it to much it responds the same way as holding back too much air or over compressed singing

      @@chrisliepe Thank you, so all the muscles in that area are exerting pressure on the air inside? Core muscles squeezed and pelvic floor pushing it inside from down under, right?
      Edit: Also, should you push it inside when singing clean as well?

    I teach myself how to scream and I already have a sucess. My screams are still a little bit silent, acually more silent than my normal singing voice. When I scream I feel some kind of very small air bubbles in the back of my mouth. When I practise screaming I focus more on the quality than on being loud. I sing for more than 3 years and a few weeks ago I started to teach myself screaming because it was important to me that I have the basics of singing first.

    Maybe how support should feel? I can do a 'hah' and take all the tension from my throat and bear it down to my lower abs and pelvis, do you just combine that point of attention with the "hah" into the lower pelvis and make it more powerful with the "going to the bathroom" muscles?
