- Supercharge your 4Runner Here:
www.procharger...
It's no secret that the Toyota 4Runner is an extremely capable offroader with one major flaw. It's FREAKING SLOW! So, we did what any sane person would do and supercharge our 5th Gen 4Runner with a bolt on kit from ProCharger!
The weight from adding accessories and upgrades to your 4Runner (and Tacoma) makes it more challenging to tow, pass, and play, both off-road and on. They desperately need more power. ProCharger superchargers are supposed to be easy to install, so we decided to put that to the test. We did an install on a trail in Johnson Valley, CA, home of King of the Hammers.
Using our friend’s 2017 Toyota 4Runner, we brought a bag of hand tools from our garage and set out! We started with a baseline 0 to 60mph of almost 12.5 seconds. After a few hours of unbolting, clamping, and even adding an optional decorative manifold cover, we were all installed! And we did it ON THE TRAIL! Post-ProCharger, our 0-60 improved by over 2 seconds. Optimized suspension and better pump gas will surely get this into the 9’s!

Install in the desert is crazy af lol.
came here to say exactly this.
This is the video tutorial on how to spend money without your wife finding out
Oh my God I am laughing so hard at this comment 😂
No wife no trouble, who needs women when you have a 4 runner
No comment
😂😂😂😂😂😂🙈👍
absolute madman installing it in the middle of the desert and then immediately rips on it lmao subbed!
Good build to start the Channel with. Wishing you nothing but success
I love my 4runner but i knew when i bought that it was by no means a fast suv but thats why i have my 87 super charged c10 for when i wanna go fast and do donuts and burnouts i mainly bought my 4R Because i know its the most reliable suv money can buy on a side note installing it in the desert is freakin legendary 😮 im subbing
Sooooo no one is going to talk about them installing a supercharger in the middle of nowhere 😮
You read my mind completely
Go back and watch the beginning of the install
Got to do what you got to do lol
literally said it in the video....
No need to that’s, what Procharger said to do
Good to be prepared to know how to do a trail install just in case your rig needs more boost 😂
That kit looks and sounds awesome. Please throw it on a dynojet!
I just did one the other day, it went from 217 whp to 337 whp, which was way over expected. (On a DynoJet)
@@erikradzins Good numbers man. Did you retune yet? OTT gave me a pretty big bump in power over the factory tune. I don't want a smaller pulley anymore...Well maybe not yet 😅 If anything I need a regear.
I had a procharger kit on a k2500 454 vortec. It doesn't feel like a monster off idle, but the mid range and especially the high speed pulling power is crazy. 60-100 was crazy quick for something with the weight of my truck. the big bonus was that my mpg cruising went up. premium fuel though, that hurt.
Ehh its an extra 10 bucks at the pump. I will never go back!!😆😆😆
I’m installing my kit Monday 💪🏼
How did it go? I'm thinking about doing my 2020 pro
@@musgumeal the way they want you to install it and the plastic intake tube they give you for the intake is crap if that thing ever cracks going to boost leak. My boy doing the install we modded the whole kit. He made me a custom intake so we didn’t have to cut the fan frame.
@@hypebeast_3056 Ahh I see. Sounds like you got it on though atleast. Hows it performing? I just bought the Pedal Commander for mine today to correct the throttle delay that seems to curse us, but that’s just response, gotta get some power too somehow.
@@musgumeal Il post a video once it’s all ready to go stay tuned
So easy that you can do it on trail? Yeah, easy to watch you do it on trail. Awesome job!
Awesome upgrade!! If the mods put a smile on your face, it's a go 100%
Enjoy it and keep on the awesome videos!
$7500 kit to run a 10 second 0-60, 4Runner community is so cooked
Yea rich folks basically
It's very in line hp/$ of what anyone would spend on anything
Guy is loaded with gear. It would probably run better on a stock truck without gear.
Dudes 4Runner is loaded with bigger tires/wheels, armor and gear..what did you expect?
His truck weighs around 5000lbs, probably could use a re-gear, and the elevation is somewhere between 2000-4000 ft above sea level. At sea level, it is probably a 7-8 second truck which is pretty quick for being so loaded down. That is the main purpose of adding boost to these vehicles. A stock 4runner will likely be 5-6 seconds and pretty sure you could re-gear and retune it for more power/acceleration.
More fuel, more air, more power = more heat …id invest in upgrading the overall cooling system to keep temps in check
Better still, water methanol injection!
bro installing in desert no shade no cover and with a hoodie on..u da real winner
The fact this little company did this for us!!! Thank you!!!
Sure the price seems high, but when you take into account you can install it yourself as compared to some other kits, it probably balances out to a positive. If I had a 4Runner, I'd consider this mod after doing plenty of research of course.
Agreed, plus it’s paid for. A lot better than buying a new vehicle IMO.
Can we get a non California compliant Procharger?
Great video. Gives me false hope that I to could do this. lol.
You can do it!
@@TheOffRoadXtreme Yes he could do it but you have to admit doing this where you did it is pretty damn impressive!
Pretty cool that it was done on the trail... May I suggest an oil catch can cause that intake looks a bit dirty...How are the MPGs?
100% but then it likely won't be CA smog inspection compliant.
@@scottleggejrif it’s a oil separator it can be. Just not an “open” can.
I have a 2010 and im really considering this but man I love the fact that the 5th gen is so reliable I REALLY dont want to muck that up :|
Grinder with no guard and against the leg is just so wild. Idc how new/ much you trust it. Screw that lol
Why go with a centrifugal? Arnt they usually soft down low since the compressor needs rpm to build boost? I feel like in a heavy truck application you would want a TVS for instant response.
Even though they make more “boost” down low, you have to take loads and loads of timing out due to the high compression. So it’s not as much HP per PSI down there.
Once the piston speed increases, the engine allows more timing, and then combined with boost = gains.
Plus with modern transmissions with 6+ gears…. Once your foot goes past 50% throttle, it’s gonna downshift anyways. So pretty hard if not impossible to be in “boost” at ultra low RPM no matter what.
Either way, boost rocks 🤘🏻
This is not what I have heard anyone who has run both styles of supercharger. Everyone I have ever talked to says the Whipple/TVS blowers are stronger down low and much more responsive while the centri's come online higher up and pull well up top. I have even seen where people will run a BOV with Centri's specifically so they can overdrive them for better low end but not overboost up top.
The 4runner does not have 6+ speeds. its got that dog crap 5 speed with a 3.5:1 first gear which is all the more reason you need low end torque. That's half the reason people need to re-gear these trucks even with a measly set of 33's. IMHO the main reason you would put a blower on a 4Runner like this is not for WOT 0-60 times or 1/4 mile time(since its still slow as shit even with the blower), but to improve driveablilty. Driveability improvements are going to be happening at
less moving parts...I'm not really looking for 1/4 mile times... I tow an overland trailer that makes the transmission hunt for gears constantly on the freeway... even with gears it drove me nuts... Now it holds 5th gear all day long between 60-80mph where it was constantly downshifting in the past...
@@roryconnell7562 All the reasons you list are exactly why a TVS blower would be better. Better response at low rpm and better low end torque.
I didn’t say anything about 1/4 miles times
I also find the less moving parts reason a bit weak. Both are geared and have pretty close to the same amount of parts. And how many OEM’s do you see running centrifugal superchargers? They ALL run Roots/TVS including any TRD superchargers.
@@Jay-me7gw I wouldn't call the A750F a dog crap 5 speed transmission but rather an ancient transmission. It is a super reliable smooth 5 speed that is used in the 2000 era 4th gen 4Runner V8, FJ Cruiser, GX470, 2003+ Land Cruiser/LX470/Sequoia, and weirdly in the 5th gen 4Runner even though a 6 speed was available. When it came out and for a couple of year, it was praised as a smooth transmission. It wasn't until everyone moved on to 8 speed and 10 speed transmissions that reviewers start crapping on it for its lack of fuel efficiency. In the rest of the world, the A750F soldiers on in the crap roads and environments not seen in the good ol USA. Meanwhile, those that still own a vehicle with the A750F probably don't even know because it just keeps on going. Otherwise I do agree that for these heavy BOF overlanders, a roots style/TVS supercharger is preferred due to the instant response and low end torque delivery rather than the top end speed. If you want speed, SUV/trucks are the wrong way to go about it.
Did it kill your fuel mileage ?
I still contend the 5th gen has enough power, but the 5 speed hinders it a lot. Granted there's nothing that can be done to the trans, obv. So we're left with jacking the engine. I won't go that route, but fun to see others do it. Driving a 10 speed with a slightly lower rear diff ratio, with a worse power to weight ratio, is truly eye opening.
There’s no manual swap that can be done?
doing this on the trail was fucking raddddd
Love the LS piece. Cheaper and probably faster than the charger thing. 😂
Now to convince the wife her 2024 4runner needs a pro charger lmao 😂
Work hard play hard!
Great reminder
What did it do to your gas mileage and what kind of fuel do you have to run with it?
Thinking about doing the same but to my 2nd tacoma, but want to increase miles to the gallon
🔥 video! Keep it up!
Great video, congrats on the boost!
Your wheels looks so badass! Can you share the brand and size please? Amazing video tho
These are 17" AEV Salta Wheels
Way cool. How about a kit for a Jeep TJ 4.0?
BTW - impressed how easily it installed with minimal tools, but who goes wheelin with a cutoff saw.
Needs new plugs better fuel if he can and a complete professional tune . Tune the transmission also . Definitely a badass truck
How much does this impact fuel economy?
Wondering if changing final drive ratio would have been better?
You are happy and that’s all that matters!
Can we get a update how's everything holding up ect
Everyone complaining about 5th gen power, but they probably never drove the classic runners with the 22re 😆
Word. My 5th gen 4.0 is frankly a powerhouse compared to my '87 22RE (...which I eventually asked to spin 35" tires). If a 4.0L doesn't have enough power for you, consider a GX460, or just one of the new gen Toyota 4x4's. That 2.4L, especially the hybrid, is slinging out CRAZY torque.
Had me a 2nd Gen 4Runner. Abysmal power, but it was a good truck.
Thats a cool kit. I'd install a wideband o2 sensor to monitor air fuel ratio. How much was it?
ProCharger, if you see this, please do this to the Atlas Cross sport VR6 please
Crazy AF to install forced aspiration on a bulletproof perfect engine. Let alone in the middle of the desert hahaha
Now you need some 5.29s
Great job, thank goodness a gust of dust didn’t pick up when the intake was open lol
Literally hooked it up in the desert!
Looks complicated. Can you do another video on how you opened the hood?🙃🤣 Seriously, great video, just expensive gains for $8k.
soo 7k to lower 2 sec ?
You gotta remember how much weight it's moving. A stock TRD Off Road is 4,750 lbs dry. Just in tires there's an additional 200 lbs over stock (and the rotating mass of the tire kills acceleration). Front bumper and winch is easier another 300 lbs. Rear bumper and swing outs is another 250 lbs. Roof rack, 80 lbs. Trail gear and tools can easily add up to 200 lbs. Fuel cans (5 gallon can filled) are 35 lbs each. Rock sliders and armor is easily 130 lbs.
If you're going with only 2 extra fuel cans, bare minimum gear, and the bumpers/armor/winch, that's 1,330 lbs over stock (6,080 lbs total), in a stock 270 hp vehicle. The supercharger adds roughly 90 more horsepower (360 hp crank), so 2 seconds faster checks out when you account for the weight (this thing is close to suburban weight and power at this point.)
What would it make it not street legal in all 50 im not understanding it's just air if someone can explain would be greatly appreciated 👍
what's the new 0-60? i think i missed it in the video.
Would this kit technically work for a Lexus rx350 I wonder…or my Avalon? That would absolutely rip, the thing already roasts tires and sounds like a v8 with my y pipe set up hehe
Love to see what my 4.0 litre petrol would do in the give it the bejesus stakes.
Whenever I Do any Type of Work on My Car I Go to the Most Barren Desert And Do My Thang
33" tires? There went your power! Did you regear for the taller tires? As it is the 4runner has gears way to numerically low at 3.73 stock. Add all the weight and no surprise, you have no power.
I really wish Toyota made the 4Runner with a Diesel Engine the only way to go. You ever tried the Pedal Commander ?
This has the Pedal Commander and it works with ProCharger’s tune.
Why use a pedal commander when you can press the pedal faster for free
They do, it is called Hilux Surf but that ended in 2009 like the 4th gen 4Runner. The 5th gen 4Runner only come in petrol version. Essentially the Fortuner replaced the 4Runner/Hilux Surf in some oversea markets and the Land Cruiser Prado (similar in appearance to the Lexus GX) replaced the Hilux Surf in Japan. Some markets sell both the Land Cruiser Prado (diesel) and 5th gen 4Runner (petrol). Just remember, the diesel version is dog slow but you do get better fuel economy. I am pretty sure most folks in the US will not like the diesel version since you will take forever to get onto the highway and passing speed (it'd be dangerous). Plus Toyota diesels don't pass US emission regulations. 99% of drivers in the US will much prefer the petrol version plus fuel in the US is cheap compared to most countries in the world.
Great Video thank you! What brand and model are the wheels and tires/sizes you are running? Love the look!
AEV Salta wheels on 285/75/17 Kenda Klevar MT tires
Appreciate it, thank you!
Did the tuner / tunes come with it?
Yep, ProCharger can provide a tuning solution and a tune to load.
Does it have a CARB number? No number, not legal.
I didn’t see him install much on the trail. Just minor stuff like engine cover. I call bs.
This was done in a shop.
A lot of money to gain 2 seconds on an SUV. How much do you gain where is counts?
Ok folks - the ultimate question:
ProCharger vs Magnuson ???
What should I go with and why?
Where can I get the front bumper?
AFn 4x4 usa
@@AdvancedAccessoryConcepts thank you!
My 08 sequoia 5.7 RWD is factory at 6-7 second I think.
I know it’s bigger and a bigger engine etc. but that’s pretty bots for a vehicle its size I think haha.
I’m only here bc I’m consider a 2022-23 gx460, gently used LX570 or 2020+ LC.
4R just doesn’t do it for me. I prefer more interior space and three zone climate control for the kids.
4R is an absolute tank though. Had a 2021 limited. Decided to take it back to the dealer the next day. lol.
The LX570/LC200 have even less space than the 08+ Sequoia. I cross shopped the Sequoia and the 200 series. You have to be willing to live with the shortcomings if you go with a 200 series. Hence I carry a hitch mounted swingout basket with my LX570 if I have full luggages for my family. Off-roading/overlanding, you can tackle more difficult trails with the 200 series than the Sequoia (stock vs stock or even minimally modified Sequoia).
@@runnerxa i know. It’s crazy how roomy the sequoia is. Love it. Haha
Where is this kit for the FJ Cruisers?!
What about the fuel pump upgrade? At minimum it should be upgraded
no fuel pump upgrade just injectors..
OK now it will be as reliable as a six GEN
😂
I'm assuming this product will also work for a FJ Cruiser. Correct?
It doesn’t fit the FJ, due to shorter front end.
Oh that is cool he went out to the desert to do the reveal of everything in the box. I can't wait to see the install at his house or in a shop....
This was 100% done right in the desert.. took about 6-8 hours..
What trim and year is it?
Can you supercharge a 2018 Taco?
Hey , can you me more info on your bumper ?
This is an AFN 4x4 front bumper
Power output vs a Magnuson top mounted SC??
45% more HP for the PC, 30% more HP for the Magnuson
Couple questions was the kit given to you or did you pay full price? Depending on the answer why this over a tvs positive displacement supercharger that would have a ton more boost in the midrange and lower rpm. Putting it on in the desert is a little disingenuous as it’s quite obvious you had a more than just normal hand tools to install it.
Other than the wheel cutter, he basically had some wrenches and screwdrivers. Pretty common stuff to have
I chose the procharger over the TVS systems on the market for 1 major reason... Simplicity... I've installed over 100 TVS blowers in my lifetime... Nothing wrong with them in a street application... however... I do put alot of offroad miles on this 4runner... So less moving parts means less things that can break... So I personally chose to go with the procharger for this application...
glossed over extending the battery cables pretty quick there
Its pretty boring,... two extension cables that get bolted into place, and a really stout batter tray to hold the battery (even has a billet top hold down mount that looks dope)
What brand is the Bumper and Rock sliders on this 4Runner?
afn 4x4 front bumper and victory 4x4 blitz sliders
Is this 4Runner rwd or 4wd
It’s a 4Runner… what do you think?
@@iihxkoo5435 ive seen some for sale that say RWD
Yes the place to be without the wife finding out as others mentioned on here😂
The Procharger sitting on the edge of the bench makes me nervous
Don’t worry about all the dirt and dust it’ll be all good.
Pro charger linear narrowband peaky output, it’s better to have a positive displacement roots style supercharger, boost comes in way sooner more power more torque sooner, cleaner install less plumbing 🪠, more reliability, pro chargers style are really just 2nd rate here for off-road the boost curve isn’t good for our type of vehicles, trucks going off road needing lower rpm power for towing and hauling, pro charger style better for sports cars
so ever put a "roots" blower on a Toyota? Theres a reason why the power claims are much lower. Cause you have to take out a LOT of timing down low, due to the high compression and low piston speed. Youd be shocked that even at 2psi the PC and the roots are making about the same gain, and then the PC makes more up top due to the lack of heat.
Great video! Awesome!!!
This 7-8psi kit is around 400hp looks bad ass. My 350hp 6psi
magnussen'd '17 is like 6-6.5sec 0-60 and already walks crew cab 6.2 silverados and 3.5 ecopoops...on 34's no fake Kirklander gear on it...roof rack deleted lol.
I’ll race you. You won’t be happy with the results though 😜
lmao kirklander
Wanna race me 3.5 ecoboost on 35s and 24 lbs of boost just pushing 600whp and 645lbs of torque
like Kirkland signature? I like it...
@@stinkysanchez31It won’t last very long with that output.
Wish I were short so I can find 4runner/tacoma interior comfortable. 😂
7aec stock is "slow" ???
It wasnt meant to be an Acura/Infinity/BMW
Where’s the link to the kit?????
Good lookin' out! Here you go: www.procharger.com/truck-suv-superchargers/toyota/2010-2011-2012-2013-2014-2015-2016-2017-2018-2019-2020-2021-4runner-superchargers/
What lift do you have for the 33’s?
33” don’t fit on a stock 4Runner? I am genuinely surprised about that. I have 33.2” BFG on a 2006 Land Cruiser and didn’t have to mod anything.
4.88 gears would have been nice as well.
For realllll!
dont maintain that turbo your gonna get stranded too most unreliable part added is that turbo or no frame maintiance looks good tho
Why not just get a pedal commander? I bought one for my 3rd gen tacoma and on the highest setting with it fully loaded went from 0-60 incredibly fast...I keep it on city mode which is enough for me. Still adding a supercharger or turbo is dope.
headgasket?
C8 has an LT, not an LS.
MPG doesn't mean MILES per gallon, pretty much means mile per gallon after install lol
whats the mpg now tho
Better gear ratio?
All the money for something not made to go fast and you want lower gearing when your wheeling. But you did say over landing so IG
What rims are those?
these are AEV salta wheels
that looks like a turbo not a super charger?????
Wait did I hear you right? A mod that is CALIFORNIA LEGAL?!!
Yes sir.
If your getting a 4 runner your not exactly going for a quarter mile killer I think I’d much rather go for parts for low end torque gearing and such for climbing g getting out of trails
How do you comfortably fit a family in a 4 runner? Lol tundra or sequoia for a win on room, speed and HP off road support.. 4 runner is for a family grocery trip for sure, but travel?
We only have 1 kid... sometimes a niece or nephew..
