Stock size tires are best. I use BFG KOs 2 as well. I’ve been from Moab to Colorado mountain passes to Big Bend. And when you’re doing 90 on the interstate to get there you’ll appreciate it. Also the spare is the same size😉
Something to keep in mind when you're packing all that gear into your storage box: if you ever find yourself in a rollover or a collision, all that stuff can come loose and literally kill occupants that would otherwise be unharmed. A box that is permanently mounted (painful, I know), with a lid that secures to the box, or a cargo cage/cabin separator are a must.
Had my runner for 6 months now. Took it out stock at a local rock garden. After that I needed sliders. Took it out more, now I need clearance, so I got suspension. Slashed one of my 265s side wall, got it replaced and prepped for bigger tires. BMC/CMC, pinch weld delete and bumper trim, I got wheels and 305s e rated tires including spare. I would load my spare in the hatch everytime I wheeled, so then I got a swing out spare tire carrier. I do a lot of night runs so I needed lights. Got baja d squadron and s2 pros. My point is, take your rig out and you'll know exactly what you need to hit the trails. For me, functionality is priority, looks last.
Nice video. I have a 2018 4Runner Off Road Premium. I put K02s on it (stock size) and love them. I put a steel front bumper with a 12,000 pound winch on the front. I put an Eibach 3 1/2 inch lift on it. I put the same rock sliders on, that you did, only without the top plates. I put on a nice 3/4 length roof rack with rear side panels that I can mount fuel containers or other accessories on. I installed a two drawer storage system in the back. Because of the less than desirable departure angle, I bought a skid plate that goes in the trailer hitch and mount it when I'm going off road. I've banged it pretty hard a few times and it took the hit instead of my truck. I highly recommend getting one of these. I've got a couple of other projects in mind. But right now, I'm very happy with the vehicle and it's performance. I just got back from five days in Utah at the Winter 4X4 Jamboree. I had a great time and the 4Runner performed excellently.
Consider relocating your rear diff breather valve if that big puddle you splashed through is a common occurence. I use a screw-in nipple and 3/8 fuel line to get the breather up around the tail light, cost about $10 per vehicle (2019 4Runner and 2016 Tundra). Great video for early mods, I'm gonna check out those roof bars.

I did the 4 crossbars. Found two OEM crossbars at junkyard for cheap. Went with Weather Tech floor mats. Pricey but necessary. I swapped out my Limited leather steering wheel for a SR5 vinyl wheel. The SR5 wheel is thicker and more rugged.

Jason, you are a funny guy. Changing new tires is crazy. Keeping the same size tires is brilliant. LFD roof rack looks cool. Ceramic coating is overkill. We are confused as to why you ordered the rock slider steps "unpainted" . The steps are cool. Other upgrades are nice, but I would skip the chemical seat treatment. Watch our Chef's videos. Let's get cooking with the #chefs.
So you forgot the simpliest of mods! Where did you get that cool decal of a 4Runner climbing up mountains on the logo on the sides?? Great video though. Btw, LFD is awesome. Their rack was too low for a Yakima Skybox 18 and the tailgate hit the back. I asked what I should do and they sent me risers to check out. Thats customer service! I'd buy from them again anytime!
As a 4Runner owner my #1 to do is LED Headlights; though I agree with the tires as they’re made for on roads. I also have floor liners and my carpets still look brand new. I purchased the Toyota cross bars when I bought my vehicle because I use my roof rack. I also added aluminum extruded running boards which I like over the Toyota plastic or tube boards; I also installed push/bull bars which helped when I hit a deer but after I didn’t put another one on due to the noise. I also have a bug guard on my hood as well as rain guards on my windows which are nice in allowing ventilation in the rain. Another must is also a neoprene cover for the center counsel as if it gets scratched/cut replacements are ridiculously expensive.
@@Anomize23: I replaced all of my original halogen bulbs with LED, that includes high beams, which are duel mode to still allow the DRLs to function as designed, the fog lights, and inside of the projector housings. I have had no issues with them looking off I have a smooth crisp horizon line on the projectiles with beautiful and bright 5,000k white light underneath. The only issue I have had is with the life length on the LEDs in the projector housing as it’s enclosed and they can’t dissipate heat as well as if they were open or had a control box on the outside of the inclosure; even with this issue I have gotten near 2 years and am running over 3 years off the newest set, the first set may have just had bad soldering or something as the new ones haven’t had an issue, and even the older set was replaced at no cost to me under the warranty. I’m incredibly satisfied with my LEDs and would recommend the conversion to anyone and everyone. I’ve never been a big fan of HID which work like fluorescent bulbs and require a sticking of “ballast” to start, though I have installed and used them, they are not as easy as an LED replacement which is simply plug and play as the LED “bulb” simply installs like a standard halogen bulb. Perhaps you had a bad set of LEDs or bought an inexpensive set as mine are great as are the more than 90% of users that have left 4-5 star reviews. Given retailers like Amazon have a 30-day return policy I’d give a decent set another try and return them if you don’t like them. Or don’t if you prefer HIDs; get the headlights that you like and work for you I just know LEDs work great and belong in my 4Runner and I wouldn’t give an absolute answer to anyone as there are always outliers, maybe that’s me, or maybe that’s, either way people can read these comments and make their own choice. Add- I replaced the backup light bulbs too, also with LEDs and they make a night and day difference, I think they were 1,000 or 1,200 lumen bulbs, took me two tries to find a set I liked but they make backing up at night in the country so easy. I don’t know if it’s the white light of the brightness but they really make a difference to the backup camera as it’s basically like daylight to the camera for 30 feet.
Hey Jason also Jason here 😂 seen your vid today I also picked up TRD OFD premium a few weeks ago. Always like them but took me 20 years to decide and finally buy one. your correct in your opening statement 🤣
I keep my recovery gear in the same OD green Plano case. Tried other cases like Roam, Front Runner and Milwauke pack out but ended up sticking with the Plano for the weight savings and its the perfect size for me.
Nice. I use Milwaukee pack out cases for other stuff, and almost went with that for this. But I agree that this is pretty much the perfect size for a basic kit.
Those rock sliders I mean heavy duty steps are are great mod! The 4Runners already so capable without a lift! Mod #7 should be to delete those Crome stripe things Toyota put on either side of the front logo as of 2020!
My daily driver is a silver 2004 4Runner Sport 4.7-liter V8. I bought it new, and it's been a fantastic vehicle - especially through Colorado winters. I plan to get another new one when Toyota does a redesign (maybe 2023). I've been hearing rumors of a turbo V6 for the next generation.
I would say that tinting your windows is the single most effective thing you can do to protect your vehicle's interior, especially if you live in a climate that gets HOT in the summer........which is pretty much the entire U.S. Even if you park in a garage at home, it's the cumulative effects of your vehicle sitting in the sun while you're at work. Had a 14 year old vehicle (bought new) that was tinted within a month of buying it. Interior was immaculate. No fading, ripping, or cracks in the dashboard.
Great vid. Im looking to buy a brand new 2023 4Runner and now I will make sure I order one without the running boards and roof rack cross beems. I will add my own!
You needed to mention Canvass Back for the rear. The plastic in the 4 Runner scratch so easily. Also, the factory tires removed were excellent for fuel economy and ride, including inclement weather traction. What about the K&N air filter OEM replacement for the factory air filter a definite fuel economy pick up one 1 to 2 gallons per mile.
Just found you. Subscribed. WE Washingtonians (if you are from here)need to stick together. I have the 2018 TRD Off Road for similar reasons. I stuck with my Dunlops because shy of slinging mud, the off road tech. makes them work REALLY well. Most hate on them right off. And I was Leary at 1st myself. But I am telling you, they have not let me down in EVERY climate we have had. Every terrain except mud slinging they have impressed me. (when they wear out, I will get the K02's) My 1st and only modification has been rock sliders from White Knuckle. They are worth every penny! Can do what yours do for a great price. Came all set and ready to mount up. Guess I need to go find out if your rig has KDSS.
Taking delivery of a 2023 TRD Offroad in the next month or two. Definitely swapping the tires for some A/Ts, and definitely keeping them stock size. 32's are enough for what I'm doing. It's a distance vehicle, I don't want it to drive horribly or eat even more gas when I have to drive 400 road miles to get to 40 amazing offroad miles.
Good reason to pick it, I bought the same model three months ago. The main reason why I bough the off-road was because it's the only model that uses a key start. We are driving 4WD we don't need a dainty push start lol. Otherwise I would have bought the pro because I liked the lunar rock color and other upgrades.
I bought a larger version of your Genius Boost. They provide much more than boosting capability. My GB70 came with several cables, connectors, and adapters to power 12 volt accessories. Here in Northern Canada, my Genius boost will not only hold it's charge for six months in -20C/-5F, but provide power for a long time!
A couple other rock sliders to consider that you can get already powder coated are the RCI ones (I have these in the 5 degree model and like them a lot) and the RSG which are also excellent and are a little bit bigger, so provide a wider step to access stuff on the roof.
Does anybody know it the "grey wire mod" still works on these newer TRDs? For those that don't know, there is a grey colored wire under the dash on older TRDs, it notified the rear e-locker that the vehicle was in 4lo. But you could cut the end of the wire and ground it, and the sensor would always say it's in 4lo, allowing you to use the e-locker in of course 4lo, but 4hi and 2wd. Also having smashed one on my 03 taco, I would recommend picking up a e-locker guard/skid plate. I wanna say I got mine from LowRangeOffroad, and it was around $50 (although times have changed and things cost more), but it's a great protection investment for a $2000 factory part.
Been watching Toyota 4 Runner and Tacoma videos for a year now and You are doing a great job. I will be buying a vehicle when lease runs out in 22 and I will be doing the exact thing with the tires except mine will be winter rated. Kudos to Discount Tire, I will talk to them ahead of time!! Thanks
Thanks Jason. I am also a Washingtonian, and like you bought the 2021 Toyota 4Runner. Mine is the Venture edition. It's my first Toyota ever. i subscribed.
A fellow Yakimanian! I just purchased a 23 Off Road and found my way to your videos. I'm doing tint this week and trying to find a set of TRD pro wheels to put some KO2s on. I am not a huge fan of the stock silver. Thanks for the video!
@@JasonExplainsThingsMy goal is suspension and a C4 LoPro at some point. I definitely will need a winch here in the winter for trails. The truck has TSS so I will have to decide on bull bar height or no bull bar. I will also need to find where I am going to get all this money it adds up quickly!
Just got a 2022 SR5 Premium and pretty much what I had on my immediate list is confirmed by you. Been looking at Shrockworks sliders but as you say - sell these as super duty steps to the family and the Cali are more step than the Shrocks.
Awesome! Check out the off-roading videos we did this summer. They're a ton of fun. I'm now pretty much hooked on 4wd Toyotas and adventures with friends/family. So much fun!
Thanks Eric. Definitely will. Probably the next one will be about offroading/overlanding comms between trucks. We plan on installing radios in both the 4Runner and my friend's Colorado. We'll show all the wiring, etc. After that there are definitely more 4Runner projects planned.
awesome video! i have the same exact one except 2018. i did 265 ko2s, rsg sliders and 2.5/1.5 dobinsons lift. the sliders and lift i got during black friday sales. i refuse to pay full price for mods. lol
My first mod was very similar to you. I got 33” tires though. Mine are the cooper discoverer s/t maxx tires and they are sick all terrains. Very heavy tires but they don’t really shake at interstate speeds like you’d expect. I got a 2” lift and a leveling kit for the front suspension adding another 2” to the front so the 33” tires have plenty of room and don’t rub.
Wide tires actually give you less traction not more. and create a lot of unnecessary issues. If you want height and are willing to be less wide and save money at the same time go with 235x85x16 which are 9.6 inches wide but are 31.7 inches tall and are waaaaay less money. They use this philosophy in Australia and Africa, and it they work great!
U named your daughter Ripley?! Awesome. I want to add a roof rack for skis and a hitch mounted bike rack. I wander if I can split down the middle the roof accoutrements to be able to mount both skis and a bike or kayak at same time?
What a great video! I bought my 2021 4Runner Venture 01/02/2021 and have been watching many youtube videos. Your list is exactly what i want to do. Tires (Ko2) most definitely. Crossbar ill wait on my model has some that will work for now til i get the roof rack. I have gotten the ceramic coating waiting for a better day to apply. The "heavy duty steps" lol Cali raise sliders are in the cart. Debating on having them powder coat or should i DIY it myself. Already got the weather tech liners and the Rhino recovery gear. Thank for a great video and help with the decision on painting my own sliders!!!
Great video. Seems like a really good dude just out loving life. Love the 4Runner too.....the perfect all-around vehicle (except for gas mileage). Lol.
@@JasonExplainsThings thanks for the tips. Your video is well done. In the future video, can you give a description or name or link to the products that you use in the video.
When you applied the coating, did you run into issue with spray can that got clogged up? I'm using krylon spray can but two cans so far got the nozzles clogged up after only 30 seconds of spray. I tried to poke in the needle into nozzles and air duster but still couldn't fix the clogged
I opted/ordered a 22 4Runner off road prem. in mag. gray. After careful thought and research I decided to go non KDSS since I’ve already got the eibach sus kit already. Every 4r I’ve had has had kdss except for my trd pro. Wife’s 16 trail edition has kdss so yes I’m very familiar with it. I can’t wait to get it so I can start the build.
I was about to close this then you hit us with the joke 👌🏽
Just bought the metallic grey Toyota sr5 4Runner.. 2wd drive and lovin it !!
Even worse, gonna be a turbo 4 popper
I would say that tinting your windows is the single most effective thing you can do to protect your vehicle's interior, especially if you live in a climate that gets HOT in the summer........which is pretty much the entire U.S. Even if you park in a garage at home, it's the cumulative effects of your vehicle sitting in the sun while you're at work.
Had a 14 year old vehicle (bought new) that was tinted within a month of buying it. Interior was immaculate. No fading, ripping, or cracks in the dashboard.
Fellow washington gal here! Researching my 4runner options! Thanks for sharing!
Off-Road Premium is the way. Then mods when/if/how you want 👍🏼
Thanks for the tip on the roof rack. I’ve been looking for an upgrade from the stock rack but not a full blown overland style rack.
I would stay away from the front fairing crossbar. It scratched up my paint pretty bad.
Rock Sliders should give some 💖Ripley love! Way to go!
No KDSS. And yeah I’m from here. :-)
I never comment on videos but wanted to comment on this one. I really appreciate your positive attitude, humor and humility.
Great video man!
Just got my 2023 TRD Offroad Premium, thanks for the advice.
LFD Off-Road is actually based in North Caroline, just outside of Charlotte.
Woah. You are right... I am wrong. Not sure how I screwed that up. 😅
Interesting to know as I live in Charlotte😁
Because they are in Denver which is also a town in Colorado
LFD is in Denver, which is not outside of Charlotte. It's closer to Mooresville or Statesville.
I have a 21 Magnetic Gray 4runner trd off-road and I love it! Thank you for the mod tips and love the video!
Love your wholesome projection in your videos, keep going
Worth checking out Falken Wildpeak A3 tires if the KO2s are out of your price range
And KO2s are really noisy for an AT tire. I prefer the wildpeaks 10x over
I just went up a size to 275s and had rubbing issues. Had to file down front bumper and heat gun fender well. No rub anymore! Good vid 👍
Nice!
Man I really want this SUV now!!!! Great video! Nice mods!
A couple other rock sliders to consider that you can get already powder coated are the RCI ones (I have these in the 5 degree model and like them a lot) and the RSG which are also excellent and are a little bit bigger, so provide a wider step to access stuff on the roof.
Really well made video dude, subbed.
Check out Glare Ceramic coating. Superior product and very easy to apply.
Thanks
The KO2s are snow rated. They have the snowflake symbol on the side. Thanks for watching! :-)
Appreciate the enthusiasm. That's a good first six value mods. I broke the bank on my upgrades. Think Icon Stage 7...
🤤
Great video. You can do all those things to an SR5 premuim which I just picked up new. X series with the Trd tires. Stock they can go a lot places.
Edge guard won my business after seeing this for the incoming addition
Great video, awesome looking truck
Thank you for this video!!! Picking up my new 2022 4runner tomorrow and glad I came across your video.
Congrats! They’re hard to come by now.
Heavy duty steps!!! Best tip ever!
My first mod, spray the under carriage with a good wax based under coating.
Good idea
Had to show some love. Thank you for great video, edit & genuine content.
Appreciated! 👍
I always love your videos! Thumbs up for fellow Washingtonians! 🤘
OR stock tire fails. I didn't get out of snow just 3km away from home. Traction boards are definitely must-have.
Thanks Jason. I am also a Washingtonian, and like you bought the 2021 Toyota 4Runner. Mine is the Venture edition. It's my first Toyota ever. i subscribed.
Great vid with great comments. Thanks for the tips.
A fellow Yakimanian! I just purchased a 23 Off Road and found my way to your videos. I'm doing tint this week and trying to find a set of TRD pro wheels to put some KO2s on. I am not a huge fan of the stock silver. Thanks for the video!
Congrats! Yeah we've done tons more to the 4Runner since. Check out the winch bumper and suspension videos especially!
If you were my neighbor I’d definitely invite you to the carne asada! Currently deployed and love the vid. Can’t wait to get back to my 4Runner.
@BobG stay safe out there, And thanks for your service.
Interior lighting is one of my first
Another great one. I did a video about that 6 months after this one.
Just got a 2022 SR5 Premium and pretty much what I had on my immediate list is confirmed by you. Been looking at Shrockworks sliders but as you say - sell these as super duty steps to the family and the Cali are more step than the Shrocks.
Yeah I love them. Highly recommended.
Won't lie I enjoyed watching this vid. Hope the 4runner treating you well! Following.
Awesome! Check out the off-roading videos we did this summer. They're a ton of fun. I'm now pretty much hooked on 4wd Toyotas and adventures with friends/family. So much fun!
Thanks for sharing your ideas. Hoping that you will post more 4Runner content. Greetings from Yellowknife 🇨🇦
My first mod was the Rhino USA hitch, then weather tech window rain guards, the A post grab handle mod, and hard wire my viofo dash cam.
Excellent video my friend. I’m selling my wife right now on the rock sliders.... or the “family/kid steps” lol. Thanks
Awesome! Yeah they're great. I'm relieved my paint job actually turned out good.
U named your daughter Ripley?! Awesome.
I want to add a roof rack for skis and a hitch mounted bike rack. I wander if I can split down the middle the roof accoutrements to be able to mount both skis and a bike or kayak at same time?
Look into getting a hood scoop wrap/stamp if you're having any glare issues with that hood scoop, definitely recommend.
Awesome video. Lotta good basic tips. We're prob getting a 4 Runner next year. Yay!
Toyota Has A First Aid Kit😎 Great Video 😎
She’s so cute, may God bless you all.
Getting mine in March! Thanks for the video!
WOOT! We've had this one for just over a year. Going to do a one year review video soon.
Great video. Seems like a really good dude just out loving life. Love the 4Runner too.....the perfect all-around vehicle (except for gas mileage). Lol.
Yeah the gas mileage is the only negative thing about the 4Runner.
Great video; thanks for posting. I bought mine 2 years ago and it only has 9,100 miles on it. I love KO2 tires. Had them on both of my RAV4's.
I ordered Cali Raised raw metal too. Hope I can follow your video to do the coating
Nice. Use satin black instead of flat black paint. Closer look to powder coating. 👍
Love the vids man , good stuff !’
Awesome setup! You’ll be SwellRunner in no time!
saved this video and info to make future adjustments to my new 2021 TRD Off Road Premium 4 Runner. Love it so far and thanks for the links and jokes
Thanks! Going to do an overlanding/hiking adventure with it this weekend… video to follow of course. :-)
@@JasonExplainsThings great! Looking forward to seeing the video!
I can see the hard work going into ur videos, K E E P. GOING.
Thanks! I’ll be transparent for a second and admit the low views for all my new stuff can get to me. But views are not my end goal.
Great Job Jason!!! Tires & Rims were my first mods on my 2017 TRD Off Road (Nautical Metallic Blue). Just finish doing my last mod (I think : ) ). My Mods to date: Nitto Ridge Grappler Tires, Fuel Enduro D608 Rims, Bilstein 5100 2.5" Lift, Replaced Silver Front & Rear Bumper Valences W/ TRD PRO Black Valences, Replaced Silver Roof Rack Rails W/ Black TRD PRO Rails, Blacked out Grill Sombrero Badge, Blacked out Tail Gate Sombrero Badge & 4Runner Letters, Blacked out TRD Off Road Badges on side, K&N Cold Air Intake, Alpine Halo ilx F309 4Runner Head Unit, JL Audio Speakers (All around), Weathertech front & Back Seat Mats, Husky Cargo Mat, LED Interior Lights, Morimoto XB Head Lights & Morimoto XB Rear Tails. And a few other smaller things in the interior.
Awesome! That’s a great list. Next one we have planned are installing 2 way radios in the 4Runner and Colorado for off-road comms. Going for a clean, stock looking install.
@@JasonExplainsThings I am on the fence about doing a Borla exhaust. As of now I am done with mods. Friend of mine keeps trying to talk me into a supercharger. Told him if he has $6k to give me then I am all in.
without pics, it didn't happen, LOL
I too live in Wa and have a 5th gen. Nice build and truck man! I had ko2s but switched to cooper at3 because its my daily for work but ko2s do look better.
Not quite three minutes in yet and already 😂💀
Thanks for a fun and informative vid!
Paint Protection Film over Ceramic Coating. You need the rock chip protection.,
Agree to disagree. I don’t like how the film looks as it ages and deteriorates.
@@JasonExplainsThings ceramic on top of PPF - ceramic does nothing for impact - useless for damage. Good for cleanup. I do it for a living.
