Nice to see children kept close to family and not being raised by strangers. My father was self employed and my brothers and I would work with him, even when we were younger. Kept us out of trouble.
Your daughter did an awesome job on her song. Don’t listen to the punk kids on here. I’m a father too and that really made my day. It takes a lot of guts to post something on YT for everyone to see and or hear.
No question, this is my favorite channel for tech stuff. Tried others but nothing comparable. It feels like a community here. I don't comment much but I watch loads
There is a reason why cap fails. Modern caps are made for max capacity in smallest form and they have thinner isolation layers. So any stress on them can make it break insulation and short
MLCC ceramics are extremely brittle and can develop stress fractures when individual boards are being broken off in production (depending on location and orientation). This is also why you are not supposed to hand-solder them. Once the cracks are there, silver migration alongside the potential difference will eventually do the rest, the silver being contained in the lead-free solder. The combination of SMD and RoHS really hasn't done the reliability of ceramics any favors (which used to be very reliable in the days of through-hole and leaded solder). You can get shock-protected ceramics for automotive use, though as you might have guessed they are substantially bigger and more expensive.
ROFLOL: First the cap had a headache and then had diarrhea. 😂 Yes, I ordered the wipes, brush and a couple of other items, shipped the same day and will arrive on Tuesday. Always a speedy delivery. Thank you.
Best part of the video is interaction with his kids and just knowing they are nearby. Also awesome repair. I like watching these videos. Never ceases to amaze me.
I enjoy watching you repair these things. When I try repairing things sometimes I get u to my head and when something is fancy my mind Flys away with complex theories. Then I watch a video and I'm like right go to basics. Most of the time it's just it
Great job as always! You have beautiful children, and seeing the smile on her face melts my heart ! We really did enjoy her song ! Thanks for sharing with us Alex!!
05:05 "you should ask the cap". -> News reporter: "Dear cap pc230, what happened, why did you fail?" - Cap pc230: "Maaan, I've been in there for so long, I decided to retire! All my friends from school are dead already. I just fell asleep and it hit me. (It being the current). Now I live in NFs trash in sunny california, livin' the life!"
That was a sweet video repair. Lovely to see Alex's children have walk-on parts too! Delightful. Notice how we grownups delight in fixing things, while children delight in singing a song!
Hello, excellent videos, sincerity in your repairs is appreciated, both in repairs and in those that are not possible due to costs, not all of them show the ugly part of this work, I congratulate you, one more thing would be good if you also show the readings in a small screen in the videos, readings in diode and resistance mode, in this way we would learn to see the behavior of semiconductors when they are shorted and when they are not, I know that many already know it but not all like me. THANK YOU and congratulations!!
I spy your protege 11:56 watching Dad work while talking to his invisible friends. 😄Nurture that curiosity, keep these skills alive by passing them on to future generations.Long live NorthridgeFix.
As an engineer, one thing I can say about caps is, manufacturers cut costs by lowering the voltage rating, often to something ridiculous like a 6.3V cap in a 5V circuit. The rule of thumb is that a cap voltage rating should be double the voltage of the circuit
Excellent video People like to see family and colleagues and drama Ever since you said your sister could knock you out in a previous “customer complaint” video, I’ve been interested to meet her on the channel Loved your daughters music I’m new to the channel enjoying hours of your content I appreciate your skills and personality I feel like I am the only person that gets your sense of humour lol I would like to see a walk around the shop / warehouse and see Big Boss at work and meet all your colleagues
I was looking to order an extremely useful tool from your website, but an couldn’t find an “Alex” any chance of you getting some in stock? You truly are one of a kind. 🤣 Great video as usual sir thanks for sharing your knowledge with us. ✌️
Your endless supply of donor boards do help. If there aren't how on earth would one know the values of these caps chips. Why don't you ever get dslr cameras to repair? I need to fix a blown backlight issue on a dslr display but can't locate the circuit. I replaced the whole display assembly and still no luck, indicating the problem is in the main board. Rye area where the flex connects, there are no components there. Canon 70D
Capacitors are used for different purpose. I think here this cap is used to filter harmonics (or you can say stable the voltage). When a surge beyond its capability reached to it, burned it's dielectric layer by spark. So it is failed.

9 x out of 10 short's are caused by over heating do to over use in temperture higher than 89* F. Especially in all laptop's, phone's, tablet's, monitor's, FS-TV's and car radio's.
@NorthridgeFix- great video! my question is how much voltage do you typically inject? Also which value was the CAP you replaced? How did you determine this? Thank you
No he uses the regular ring light because the light output is much better when there no flux on the board to cause glare. You need both in combination to have good working light. Also the microscope camera he uses now versus the AF IMX290 camera he used to use takes in light differently. The ring light is great in many situations and then the gooseneck lights are good in other situations.
Caps have reasons to fail. Transients. Overvoltage. Mechanical stress on the board (board flexed during installation, thermal expansion, etc). Even manufacturing defects. However most of these do not matter as a replacement will not have the same issue (assuming it is not something like corrosion/liquid damage). And frankly it is simply not worth/cost effective figuring out. For a penny component you fix and move on.

❤❤❤🎉🎉
Are anyones children raised by strangers............? 🥴🤡
@@goober-ll1wx If mom and dad are constantly mia, sometimes.
@@BigRalphSmith But still, they are most likley not with strangers...
@@goober-ll1wx I've seen it first hand. I bet it happens more than you realize. Especially if the kids are free to roam the neighborhood.
I asked my blown cap what the problem was... It yelled better than factory and jumped into the 9th dimension.
🤣🤣🤣👌🏾
Ha ha ha 😂
Alex is a good man. A good father. A good technician. A good businessman. God bless your family Alex
And a good teacher, never forget to leave a legacy.
"Alex is a good man. A good father." and you know that how..............?
And measure twice 2 caps in parallel, two times.

I'm new here, and I'm baffled, the community is wholesome
There is a reason why cap fails. Modern caps are made for max capacity in smallest form and they have thinner isolation layers. So any stress on them can make it break insulation and short
Yes, you are correct.
most caps also fail as a result of cheap, or weak materials.

I can hear the owner of the second laptop saying the screen wasn't broken when he shipped.
🤣
might not have been, isn't right to assume, and not every delivery goes as planned.
Nice seeing you kids at the shop.
Fastest shipping around I always order for my store from you. Retro repair appreciates you guys. Flux solder nf mini grinding pen uv ect

i love the outro. Better the voice of your kids than any other stuff. You’re a real father man. Respect from Germany
👏👏👏👏 nice to see how you talk to your kids 👏👏👏

There was solder on the current sense resistor because someone had soldered a wire to it to do voltage injection
Yes
Love the smile on your daughter's face when she talks about her song! It's amazing how quickly you figure out the problems. Another awesome video!

17:30 Hahaha! Excellent.
She did very well! That song was a banger!
Plot twist: Alex got the chip for the second motherboard from the first one

I would like to see a walk around the shop / warehouse and see Big Boss at work and meet all your colleagues
I believe if you enable the MSX feature on that Flir, you'll have a better view of the small components.
Great job Alex.

Brilliant song..
Great fix on both . 👍👍
beautiful family and nice repairs
Maşaallah you have beautiful family.
You are the best what you do. You have all my respect.
Big Boss now also makes maseurements prior sending the PCB to Alex. in a couple of months he will be under his own microscope too !!!. Hard Work !!!!
The diagnosing part was epic... Headache, then diarrhea.. I spit my coffee on my lap Alex!! Thanks alot lol
Mashallah... Much Love from Pakistan
Thart song is still stuck in my head. Better than factory!! lol
As i heard the song on the first video , i was assure its your daughter, and you , really like it ❤, keep it up alex
Your son is so adorable!

Really surprised that the recent NF theme song was made by your daughter. She has some talent.

Ceramic caps definately fail and always fail as a short - can another cap like a film cap be used as a replacement ? I believe film caps fail open.
@NorthridgeFix- great video! my question is how much voltage do you typically inject? Also which value was the CAP you replaced? How did you determine this? Thank you
الله يبارك لك في شغلك ويرزقنا احسن منك يارب
ربي يحفظها ويرزقك برها
Ameen
Great video, can I ask how much voltage you inject to the circuit?
ماشاء الله تبارك الله الله يحفظها مريم ❤❤
Why the cap failed is the only interesting question. At 6:40 are those pcbs identical?
You are really Good
"you better ask the cap" sentence of the week :D
Love that song!
Why do you put excess solder on big chip pads, squeeze out and clean up. Seems easier to just put small amount new solder on big pads and install.
Best technician
12:06 your helper elf is visible
Finally we know who actually fixes all these components
Where are you from?
مجرد فضول من وين انت؟
I notice that i sometimes see only one probe when you're either injecting voltage or checking for a short. Where are you grounding it?
i dont want to think about the bloatware that comes pre installed on an msi laptop :o
Send ower greetings to the children
Gotta say the little guy is so well behaved. If it was my kid, all that expensive equipment would have snot an fingerprints all over it.
Thanks for these videos
I want to ask, in the first MSI, could it still work if you only removed the cap and not replace
The simple answer why caps fail: they have to hold alot of charge in a small area. Same with lithium batteries.
You're the boss of bosses Alex :)
New t-shirt.... "You should ask the Cap"
7:00 big boss is very shy ?
My MSI-GF65 literally stops charging and powering on after draining out. Wish I lived close to you
Big boss before he tested any device he mentioned the name of ALLAH BISMIALLAH amazing BIG BOSS thanks Alex I'm learning a lot from you
13:19 "Chou habibi" sounds like the Lebanese dialect right there?
It’s true. northridge fix is better than me.
ha ha when you said you found the short on the second laptop your little short son was standing beside you,
I'm just curious why you're not using antiglare light all time ? is there some disadvantage (heating from the lamps, ...) ?
No he uses the regular ring light because the light output is much better when there no flux on the board to cause glare. You need both in combination to have good working light. Also the microscope camera he uses now versus the AF IMX290 camera he used to use takes in light differently. Awesome, love your work - a fine art Sir.
What soldering station is that?
I hope customer would not blame you for the broken screen...
They tend to.
Nice jobs 👍👍
Two thumbs up
At 5:15 pause the video and you'll see a demon face in the glare lol That's why it failed haha. Once you see it 😀
Where's the song today Alex?🤓 oh.. it was at the end
lmao he had a headache diarrhea 😂 love your sense of humour

Saying Bismillah before turning on the laptop is the most crucial part ! 😂🕋🤲🏽
I have MSI alpha 17 gaming laptop.
Always black and blue screen randomly, after new windows.
Can you help me
