I was always told to never ever buy a second hand mattress and I'm the same an inflatable one would be better than second hand. My parents didn't have a lot of money when I was young so our holidays were camping trips and I had a blow up mattress and it was nice and comfortable.
I’ve stopped renting things from Rent-A-Center and started buying in full from furniture stores. RAC delivered a bedbug infested couch and didn’t want to give me my money back. I tried calling the health department but they didn’t do anything. It should be illegal to sell and rent infested furniture.

There's people who get returned trial mattresses, sterilized and cleans them then resells them. I got a dreamcloud this way, saved hundreds and no bedbugs to this day
I had someone visit and spend a night in my home- I found 3 bed bugs when I went to make the bed a day after they left. Cleaned , sprayed vacuumed. Washed ALL the linens etc

Big bed bugs travel. It doesn't mean they were born in that bed and grew up there. So that wouldn't be evidence to prove how long they have been there. Either the father was lying, the son never said anything or he didn't have bed bugs there. If there were bed bugs trust me they would let you know they are there. The bugs that is.
Another thing is men have tougher/thicker skin so he might not realize he has them, they are quick and sly. Women however have a thinner epidermis and their bites show up a lot more!

One, the plaintiff couldn't provide any proof that the bed she bought contained bed bugs. Two, she couldn't keep her story straight as to when she purchased the bed from the defendant. Three, she waited too long to go to the doctor to get checked out. Yep, no brainer here.
My poor mom spent so much when my niece spent the night and brought them. I think it was war for a whole year! We all became experts on prevention. Including lining my hamper with a trash bag lol.

Never get used furniture. Especially if you arent going to fully inspect it first. And then ALWAYS get a bedbug mattress protector. Also remember that bed bugs are called hitchhikers. You dont have to be dirty to get them. If you are near one, it can get to you. And all it takes it one to fuck up your home.
As someone who dealt with this recently.... definitely don't buy used furniture, clothes, bedding... anything that could carry them into your home. I had never bought used pillows or bedding, but I did sometimes buy secondhand clothing. I believe this is how I ended up with those little demons in my house. All it takes is one shirt with some eggs on it to bring them into your home. Doesn't even have to be a full bug, the eggs will hatch and then you have a problem. Same with bedding, rugs, mattresses, furniture etc. I learned my lesson and will spend the extra money to buy these things new from now on. It's expensive to treat them and they are hard to get rid of even after you do. They are persistent and will re-hatch if you don't get rid of them all at once.
@PowerDiva Actually, no. I acquired the little buggers from a surgery center. The exterminator said it's very common to get them at doctors' offices. My eye Dr had a patient bring them into the clinic and they had to haul a chair out to the dumpster because it was infested.

It's not that deep! Normal people usually furnish their new place little at a time. You need a bed and tv your first night at most. Take your time and shop around for furniture and decorate as you go.
JJ ruled correctly. There's no guarantee when you buy from a private party unless you get it in writing. Bed bugs are slow moving, she should have been able to treat immediately to remedy. Tbh if her house flooded and ppl were in her home repairing it, they could have brought them in
The thing is with bed bugs is that people don't realize they have them until an infestation happens. At this point it is too late and need to look into treatment options that will cost a lot of money to treat. But knowing you are buying used furniture, she should have taken more precautions in checking the furniture before bringing it into her home.
Just and FYI: Bed bugs take up residence throughout a home - not just mattresses. They are in/on couches, chairs, dressers, carpeting, suitcases, in cars, trucks and on public transportations etc.

They will hide in picture frames, plug outlets, creases and cracks in the walls and floors, and even electronics like DVD players, clocks, etc... You are right that they are not always in mattresses. They just need to be a few feet away from their food source.
It's possible the defendants family do not react to bedbugs. I once accidentally stayed in a hotel room crawling with them. My husband looked eaten alive but I showed no signs. We had to get completely undressed and have our baggage and bags professionally cleaned and sealed in plastic for 2 weeks. We were lucky my husband had such a bad reaction or we might have brought them home.
I feel for her so bad, I’ve dealt with bed bugs 3 times, and all 3 times came from someone else, it’s the most mentally draining experience you can ever deal with 😩
No way of knowing how the bugs got in there, whether through his stuff or her own or anyone else that entered her house. I grew up hearing the saying about not letting the bedbugs bite, but I really didn't know what they were or whether they even existed until about 20 years ago, and now we hear about them all the time.

Went back at night to unload my car, and at that moment something told me to get out my light and inspect the room I rented. Bedbugs on all crevasses of bed, wall, and corners. Spent 1hr trying to convince these engineering student that you can’t throw bedbugs away 🤦🏻♂️… got my deposit back and ran!!!
If the bedbugs are obviously visible in the back of the headboard, it seems unlikely that the guy didn't see it when taking the bed apart. Surely they'd crawl allover his hands

I've been dealing with these awful things for SIX MONTHS now thanks to a skanky person who moved into my apartment complex. The person had put a mattress and bedroom furniture on their front porch and just left it there, then a few weeks later myself and several other neighbors suddenly had infestations. Had exterminators treat it, bought the same chemicals professionals use to spray, threw stuff out, vacuum and do laundry constantly, etc. and these things STILL keep turning up. Sometimes after a treatment you won't see any for a month or so, then they miraculously start showing up again.
I once had an episode with bedbugs!! TOTAL NIGHTMARE!! Rented a studio, 3 days later..100 of bites!! Landlord came over and sprayed my bed room with 3 different kinds of RAID bug killer. Phew, only left with my clothes ( can wash in hot water n kill them). Other things can carry their eggs!! A week or 2 later while walking my dog, saw my so called neighbors/friends carry ing out my plants etc and tried later to talk to me like nothing happened. Those conversations did not go well.

My grandmother bought a couch from Aaron's. I have it now. No bedbugs! I got a recliner/rocker from Rent-a-Center last year and no bugs! There's nothing wrong with having second-hand furniture. It's no different from sitting in a chair or sleeping in a bed at a Hilton Hotel.

Stop being judgemental. The bed bugs were in the headboard not the mattress. And it has nothing to do with cleanliness

Used furniture is great, but I’d not buy a used mattress now (I’m old and have options) because of issues like this. Still, she had no evidence of any bed bug infestation.
Things I would never buy used: mattress, underwear, swimwear...you get the drift, I won't even buy used clothes or shoes.

If you aren't allergic to bedbug bites you may show no sign of bites. If his son wasn't allergic they may have had no knowledge.
The son got those bedbugs from his apartment / dorms.
The defendant may not be aware, but he surely is responsible. I was a victim of bedbug infestation, and I can tell you one thing upfront - you don’t get bedbugs overnight!

Bed bugs live in mattresses & wooden headboards ect.
They like cloth and wood. They get in your clothes, bed, curtains, books, baseboards, dressers, etc. They are not easy to get rid of.
I’ll never buy a used mattress or used couch 🥴 Those are the dirtiest things in a persons house.
