    Media management is such an important topic. But also the internal order of projects, in the interaction of folders, markers, subclips and stringouts... Chaos arises so quickly and I fear that with faster turnaround times thanks to cloud workflows, there is still a lot to come.
    However, due to problems with GDPR compliance, the cloud will probably not so important in Germany.😜😜

    • @Chris.Roberts
      @Chris.Roberts  8 місяців тому +1

      Indeed. Even small projects will benefit from an organised approach and considered workflow. Media management is the start but by no means the end of the process. 👍🏻

    Did you get a chance to checkout the background removal?

      Cool... I need to do some media managing myself, so that's why I thought it was a good subject... What tool are you using to remove the background?

    • @FrugalFixerSpike
      @FrugalFixerSpike 8 місяців тому +1

      @@Chris.Roberts I tried the invidia background removal, but it was not stable and not respondied a few times. So I went back to the OBS Background removal and color correction and most importantly the lighting without completely wiping out the projector picture.
      Thanks for the info, I created my smart bins and Power bins and getting them full of my assets and presets. I am learning to use now!

    Nice video!! Well explained, thank you. I have a question.
    What about timelines that have Fusion Comps inside them? How we can media manage that?
    I noticed that when I do the trim process some of my nodes turn red, especially Loader nodes and some Media In nodes dragged from the media pool. What would be the solution for managing fusion comps within Resolve?

    • @Chris.Roberts
      @Chris.Roberts  7 місяців тому +1

      Yes. This is a very good question to which I don’t really have an answer.
      It seems that Media Management doesn’t take into account media added to a Fusion comp, which is why you’re getting red nodes.
      Best suggestion I have at the moment is to organise your Fusion Media separately (often easier as it’s not as big as media used for edit). That way you can easily relink after managing the rest of the timeline/project.
      You could also choose to Render in Place the fusion comp. Maybe that’s a separate video.
      HTH!

       @Chris.Roberts Thank you for your response! I think right now the only option that I have is to open every fusion comp and manually backup each media used. Hope Blackmagic implements a new feature in the future that allows us to make this process easier.
      Maybe a check box on the media management dialog box called: "Analyze selected Fusion Compositions". This will check every fusion comp that we specify in the timeline, look for Media In and Loader nodes, and put these files (without trim) in a folder on the disk with the name 'Fusion Comps'.

    Hi Chris, great video, very informative and clear, thank you!
    Im encountering an issue though which you might be able to help with?
    I’m wanting to use the media manager to copy my timeline clips with say, 60 frame handles. My aim is to be able to delete my long raw videos and just store all the trimmed clips I have in my timeline to reduce the amount or storage it takes up. I’m right in thinking the media manager can do this? It will take all the clips I have in my timeline and create a copy of each of these clips with the specified frame handles and place them into a new folder on the PC? These new clips can be put into the media pool and linked to the clips in the timeline, enabling me to delete the original longer raw videos as they are no longer needed?
    I’ve done the steps to carry out this process. I have added a raw clips into my timeline and cut out all the bits I want to keep. I have then deleted the bits I no longer need so the timeline is made up of segments from the same source videos. I then have gone into the media manager and selected ‘use selected clips in media pool’ and ‘copy and trim used media with 60 frame handles’. Upon running the process, a new folder is created on my PC on the designated are with the new, trimmed clips.
    This is where I am confused. How are you suppose to link these new clips to the clips in the timeline? In the timeline all clips that are cut from the same source video are still named after the name of the source video. But the new clips have a name sequence with a suffix at the end so only the first segment from each raw clip is linked, and anything else shows as ‘media offline’ as is can’t ‘find’ the media. If I right click any of the subsequent clips from each raw video in the timeline and select ‘find in media pool’ it will always highlight the first new trimmed clip I the media pool.
    I’m aware you can ask the media manager to relink new clips when you run the process, but that doesn’t seem to work properly either and I’m tearing my hair out trying to understand why.
    Any help would be hugely appreciated,
    Many thanks
    Bagwa

      Hi Bagwa
      Yes, you're correct... When media managing clips from the same source file Resolve will name the clip, with any subsequent clips from the same file named S000/S001/S002/S003, etc so as to be able to create unique filenames. This make linking/relinking all but impossible.
      There are two basic ways to achieve what you want. You can choose to media manage the entire project, or media manage the individual timeline. Media managing the project can be useful if you want to retain bin structures and multiple timelines in the existing project. Managing timelines is easier of arching purposes/
      *To manage a project*, first choose File > Save Project As to create a duplicate project. If things go wrong you can always load up your previous good project. Then in Media Management choose *Copy* and select the destination folder. Choose *Used Media and Trim keeping 60 frame handles* and check the *relink to new files* option.
      This will manage the used media for the whole project, copying it into the location you specified and relinking to each new file as appropriate in the current project. This will also add new clips to your Media Pool for each of the S000/S001/S002/S003 etc clips. I think this is the option you'll want.
      You can do the relink for individual timelines too. However, the Timeline option will also output a .drt file in the same folder as the copied media. You can then import this into a new project, which will also import the media at the same time. However, the organisational structure of the original project isn't recreated.
      HTH!

    Do you know a way that MediaManagement also grabs Clips and Graphics used in Fusioncomps and put them also to the Archiev.

    • @Chris.Roberts
      @Chris.Roberts  7 місяців тому +1

      I'm afraid I don't. This is obviously a problem if you're looking to media manage timelines with Fusion comps that contain media added directly to the comp. I don't know if standalone Fusion has a "collate" process. As a workaround, you could choose to Render In Place any Fusion comp in the timeline, but I appreciate it's not ideal.

    Great tutorial, Chris. I wonder if you could help me with something I've encountered using media management with copy + trim. In many of my projects, I end up changing some of the metadata of my media such as the data level and in an RCM project, the source gamma - I have to change these because they are mis-identified by Resolve. Anyway, what I find after relinking to the trimmed clips is that my custom changes to data level and gamma are discarded. I believe this is a bug - just wondered if you have ever encountered this and if so, what do you do? These tweaks are camera-specific for me (e.g., Canon R6 recording CLog3 / Rec2020 - the fact that is is CLog3 is misidentified or if I use a Ninja V to record from the Canon R6 into ProRes, the data levels are FULL even though Resolve assumes they are VIDEO). Just two examples and easy for me to manage with some project notes and folder names for specific media - still annoying, lol ... Sorry for the lengthy question. Thanks for continued great tutorials.

      Ah... In this case I believe you'll need to be transcoding. If your original source clips aren't being read correctly, then the copied media will have the same issues. Changing the input color space would only apply to that clip in the project, not the media. To "bake" the changes in, you'd need to transcode the media. However, if your current solution using project notes and folder names works, then this is probably as good a solution as any. HTH.
