So…did you know about the clone tool in Davinci Resolve? Would you use it? Do you use it? Let me know below!

Hi Alex. I don't use the media page like I should. In fact, I don't usually use it at all. I really do need to organize my media properly as my projects are becoming more complex. Thanks for this very handy tip. 🙂

Hi Alex, excellent video. What happens to the project itself-would it recognize all new location for the media?

Great videos. Would love to see more on the Cut Page using Speed Editor. Very little info. out there on that. Didn't know about the Clone Tool. Will def. be using that going forward vs downloading from SD to HDD and then making another backup copy after I verify first transfer. Big time saver. . . Thank you

Amazing .. I was just about to buy a dedicated software only to do this.. I spared 100 euros. Thank you for sharing this !
Now, on a side note, I’m still interested to know if there is an easy way to clone a part of an image in DaVinci .. ;)

would love to use it more often, but lots of times there are clips of multiple projects on my cards and you can only clone folders, not files.
So in many cases I have to clone lots of files I don't want

Excellent introduction to a very handy utility. Makes me wonder if one could setup the destination folder to a Blackmagic Design Proxy Generator watch folder and both transfer the files and make proxies at the same time.

I have been suggesting people use the Clone tool for media for years on the forum. The drop down list on there, after file size - I'm not sure if the order of actual chksum applications is in order of "good to best" - like most drop downs in Resolve - it could be alphabetical. I have made feature requests to BMD to add to the GUI and asterisk to all drop downs that are using code to show lists in alphabetical order. So many times in the forum people use the first item on a list, thinking that Resolve is making a suggestions to the best choice, and in a lot of cases, clearly that's not the case.
I'm glad that I watched this because I had forgotten that it can copy over to two locations. My workflow is that I work on current projects on the fastest drive, I have connected ( which before my Studio Ultra was an external SSD ) - I was using the clone tool, then later making a copy with
"Finder" on my Mac. So doing it at the same time makes a load of sense. Thanks for the tip.
Really clear and concise. I will remember this video to link to - next time I suggest the clone tool. cheers

I'm glad I could provide some material for you to link to Jim when you're helping others in the forums! I know you put in a lot of stellar work there, so if it helps back up your point, then I'm very happy!
Based on the Davinci Resolve manual, the order is in order from the least amount of additional security and file verification to the most. This also comes at the trade-off of speed of transfer. So the first option is the fastest, whereas the last option is the slowest. I agree with you that it would be helpful to have some options on a lot of menus - such as alphabetical vs. speed of transfer vs. verification level (in this case).
I was most interested to see that the dual location transfer didn't seem to cause any additional delays or take longer, which is the exact behaviour I see in the Finder (on a Mac) when copying to two locations at the same time.
Thanks as always for your support and insightful comments on the videos!

Nice one, thanks. Will definitely use this from now on. I have had a few occasions with h.264 files that have been corrupt for some reason and I have deleted the original, only to find out months later that the file is damaged. MD5 will suite just fine.... Thanks again.

I didn't know Davinci had this tool and I'm certainly going to start using it. Thanks for the video! One thing I'm not so keen on is cloning the entire card file structure. Depending on the camera brand this can get quite deep. Am I just being an amateur?

Good post! 🤔 Do I need to do this at all.. if previously I took the time to organized my file/folders on my drives and making also copies...? I don't see the point to use it, if I already managed all my media prior to edit.... 🤔 unless I am missing something? ;) thanks!

What happen if I offload media constantly in a lapse of an event, lets say a same-day edit , does the clone tool overwrites media that's already copied? or just paste the new ones? If not what would be the proper workflow for this scenario.

Hi Alex, thanks for this very useful tip! One question: is it possible to set new folders for the media to be logged? For example, if I want my footage to be transfered for a new external device and organize it into new named folders instead of having the same root name from the memory cards.

  • @TomaszTwojFotograf

GREAT! Is it moving ALL files in folder - or only video/audio? - maybe I can use it to make a bakcup copy of all files from project (jpg/raw/360 ect)?

I'm delighted you thought so! 👍🏻 Yes it is essentially CLONING the entire location. Depending on your aim, it might be better to use the Media Management tool which you can find in the 'File Menu'. That might be a great video for another time actually...🤔

I don't suspect you're alone in that but there's a lot of power in the Media Page that goes overlooked! I'll be doing some more videos on that shortly! Thanks for watching and popping your thoughts in a comment! 👍🏻

You’re kidding me, right? You’re telling me there are people stupid enough to try to edit from their SD card? If they’re that dumb they should not be editing… Go get a job at a 7-Eleven.
Did not know about the clone tool… I like the security back up. Sounds good. I simply drag all the files to an SSD drive. But it doesn’t give me the security check. I’m going to start using this. Thanks for the tip. As usual, your videos are first class.

Haha! You'd be amazed what I've seen people try and do! 😉 I was the same, simply dragging the files from my media to my storage all in the Finder but I changed that completely as soon as I found out about The Clone Tool. Thank you so much for your very kind comments and all the support you give the channel.
