So @Chris ,when we will have The new beginner's guide for resolve 19 we been waiting for it for a long time .
Very soon... Watch this space for new book and exams. Hopefully this channel and others like it have filled the void in the meantime 😉
Thanx @@Chris.Roberts🙏🏻
Simply the best! Thanks!!
You're very kind. Thanks for commenting!
thank you Chris for this amazing review! 🙌🏻
Hi can you make a video for color grading Braw?
I'll add it to the list! Stay tuned!
@Chris.Roberts Thank you very much. I have a Lumix S5II X and Black Magic Video Assist!! Braw Is fantastic!!!
Loved your video, Chris. I applied the CSmart reframe to a video clip and it just kept going and going for like an hour. Do you have any idea what gives I’m using a very powerful computer?
That's weird... I've not had that happen before. Maybe there was something that confused the Neural Engine, but in all honesty I'm guessing... Do you manage to cancel it and try again?
Hello, i'm following your davinci resolve training for blackmagic, it's brilliant, very professionnal. Glad to find you on YT
Awesome! The new Beginner's Guide for Resolve 19 will be available soon. And good to have you aboard the UA-cam train too.
please make video what is the different generator or title ? And how to save micro
No worries... Traditionally we'd refer to a "title" as something involving text... Whereas a generator would be more a background or full-screen element. In Resolve both are Fusion compositions... The distinction is whether you want them to appear as "titles" or "generators" in the Edit page Effects library... Saving a macro to the Fusion > Templates > Edit > Title makes them appear in the Titles section... Saving it to Fusion > Templates > Edit > Generators makes them appear in the Generators section. Same macro, different locations. HTH!
@@Chris.Roberts ❤
Your video tutorial is game changing. Love it very helpful.
Fantastic! Great to hear and thanks for commenting 🙏🏻
I have difficulties understanding how the cut page works with an additional music track. I have added background music as a soundtrack and want to use the cutpage to cut my clips so that they match the music rhythm. It seems to make a difference if I select nothing at all, or specifically the video clip. When I use "ripple start to playhead", I only want the video clip to be cut, but obviously the background music must not be chopped up into pieces by the editing. Maybe you have a video on this topic, or can explain it in a future video?
Yep, if you select a clip and cut, it'll cut that clip at the playhead... If you have nothing selected, it'll cut right through all clips on the timeline at the playhead... If you don't want the music clip cut, the easiest thing would be to lock the track using the lower timeline track controls on the left side. HTH!
Thanks for taking your time. A lot of tutorials aimed at "beginners" are in fact not that beginner-friendly. I have assigned the append funtion to the shortcut "p", instead of shift+F12. This way, I can go through my footage using "i", "o", "p" to quickly get a first rough cut
That sounds like a great workflow and good use of customised shortcuts. Thanks for sharing. 🙏🏻
Thanks Chris, that was explained beautifully, Watched several tutorials about Dynamics but this get the info across first time, brilliant
That’s great to hear! Thanks for commenting 🙏🏻
My specialism is sound (in DVR), but I love Chris's videos!
Thank you 🙏🏻 🔉
I'm finding it impossible to sync my polywav file to any video clip. Piece of cake with a regular stereo file but no dice w/ polywav. Any thoughts on what I'm missing??
Depends how you're trying to sync... Are you using the Sound option? If so, try switching to another method like In points... I've not had 100% success with some audio files before. HTH!
Hey chris, the link does not seem to be working. Maybe it's an issue on my end but I did check it across multple browsers. Do give it a look.
Hi Chris, do these work in the free version of DR
Yes. I'm not aware of any limitations with the MotionVFX templates and the free version of Resolve.
@@Chris.Roberts Cheers Chris, I was having problems getting some of the effects to load, it was due to missing fonts. many thanks Barry
For whatever reason I got more out of this one video than the dozen others I tried before. Thanks!
Fantastic! Happy to hear it helped and thanks for commenting!
You are a good teacher🎉
Thank you! 🙏🏻
How would we save a customized version of these to use in other videos, too? Excellent tutorial again, Chris! Thank you!
Thank you! In principle these templates are just the same as any of the regular titles and generators and can be treated the same. You can use the techniques I covered in this video ua-cam.com/video/p39Hu9ThL98/v-deo.html about reusing titles across other projects using Power Bins. HTH!
@@Chris.Roberts - Thanks SO much! ❤
Actually, I like even before watching the video! I know what I am expecting : Creative quality content!
You’re very kind! Thank you 🙏🏻
Perfect tutorial ❤❤❤
Thank you! 🙏🏻
The "copy and trim with handles" is exactly what I want to do to save on file sizes of my project archive, but it literally never links the media properly. If I use the checkbox that says "relink to new media" it doesnt do anything, the timeline stays linked to the original full sized files. If I remove the original files and try to manually relink it will only relink some of the clips and fail to find others. When trying to individually relink the clips that it cant find when I relink the copy folder, the individual clips are greyed out, even when the file name is correct. I have spent hours on forums trying to figure out what I am doing wrong and cannot find a solution anywhere. Am I incorrectly assuming what the functionality of the "relink to new media" checkbox is supposed to do? Should that not connect the project to the newly made, trimmed files? Is there a way I can do this, or am I encountering a bug? I just want to backup my edits with the media trimmed how it is in the timeline, it would literally cut my storage needs down by 500% if I could figure out a way to trim the media and keep my timeline intact. Any thoughts would be much appreciated.
Hi... I use this process to trim the media for my timelines all the time and I haven't had a problem. That said, I feel you pain. I have been there with earlier versions of Resolve! I assume you're selecting Timelines and Used media and trim options in Media Management? This creates the trimmed media AND a .drt timeline file in the destination folder. You are then NOT relinking to these files in the current project. Instead, import the .drt into a new project and the trimmed media will be automatically relinked. The Relink New Files option is used if you're managing the files within the same project... This will create new clips int he media pool to automatically relink to the new media, but I would only do this in a copy of your project. This is where I've been burned previously. Hope this helps!
@@Chris.Roberts Hey Chris, I appreciate the response. I followed the steps exactly as shown at 6:30 in the video. the subsequent folder created does contain the trimmed files, but no DRT file is being created. I believe I am using the same version of resolve shown. Any reason you could think why the DRT is not being made? the reason I ended up trying to manually link the clips is because this file was not appearing for me. Struggling to figure out where I am going wrong. Thanks for the vid regardless.
Hi again! Ok, so maybe it's because you don't have the "Preserve hierarchy..." option enabled? If this is the case then Resolve will manage the media and the .drt into the same folder, rather than being outside the folder as in my video. Go digging in that folder, I bet you'll find it buried in there somewhere 😉 HTH!
Thanks, Chris! Amazing tutorial, as always. I’m so happy to see you creating tutorials on Fusion…I’ve been waiting for this!
Great to hear. I'll look at making some more Fusion tutorials in the future. Let me know if there are any subjects you'd like to see.
EXCELLENT tutorial! Very clear, not too fast, and actual explanations as to why you're performing certain actions. The thumbnail tip at the end was the cherry on top. Absolutely subscribing!
I really hope the devs let us organize the macros a little easier. Making these templates for myself is simple but making templates for new and inexperienced users is sweat inducing.
Wonderful! Thanks for commenting and subscribing.
Can you start and stop Video.
Yes. There’s a chapter in this video for Freeze Frames. Or check out the separate Quick Tip QUICK TIP: FREEZE FRAMES in DaVinci Resolve ua-cam.com/video/bEBggc__f6U/v-deo.html
This guy really knows what he is doing. It's quite complicated process though. I wish DR would make it a lot easier in the future. I can't waite for your next episode.
Thank you! You're right... It's certainly not an intuitive process... you have to dig around to find the controls you want and they're not always obvious, so it most definitely could be more user friendly. That said, I honestly just tried things out until I got the results I wanted... As long as the macro is in the Macros folder (just move it there if need be) you can always reopen it in the Macro Editor and change the controls. Trial and error is a great teacher 🤣
Very cool, fanks!
You're very welcome. Thank you!
Awesome workflow, Chris! Can you expand this to describe creation of the drfx (zip) construct that is used by Resolve to package these templates?
Sure... no problem... It's actually a simple process. You just zip up the Edit folder in the Templates folder (including the Titles, Generators, Effects and Transitions subfolders containing the appropriate macros)... change the .zip extension to .drfx and pop in back in the Templates folder. But I'll look to put together a video if it'll help. Thanks for commenting!
Fab Fusion facts... 👏
hopefully FUN fab Fusion facts... 😉
@Chris.Roberts - of course! 😀
👍
😉
Very clear and concise!
Thank you!
Awesome. If you could make a tutorial with BUS in the Fairlight Page ( with Voice Over, SFX and Music). 😊😊😊😊
No worries! I'll add it to the list. Thanks!
@ awesome. I heard Blackmagic modified the “Ducker” in the Edit Page but haven’t tried yet.
Yes. You can now use multiple tracks as sources in 19.1. Great for using the Ducker with more than one dialogue track now. 😎
So good! Will the completed template work correctly in all aspect ratios or do 2 different templates need to be created for, say. vertical and horizontal due to different positions for the motion start and stop ? Thanks so much, Chris!!!
Hey, great question... The same template will work in any timeline resolution and aspect ratio... however, depending on the motion you setup and the overall design then you may need to consider different titles for vertical and horizontal aspects. HTH!
@@Chris.Roberts - Thanks so much for answering my question! I had thought this was the case but I wasn't sure if I just didn't know enough to figure out how to make just a single one rather than one for each aspect ratio. I really appreciate you creating the content you do for us!
Thanks Chris
You're welcome! Thanks for commenting.
Great video as usual Chris! Clear instructions in a steady pace. Thanks.
Thank you! 🙏🏻
I learnt a lot from this, thank you. I changed my Append to end shortcut to F8 rather than the default shift+F12. It is quicker and close to my fingers for I and O, so three quick taps and the selected portion from in and out lands on my timeline. Similarly I changed the shortcut from switching from source to timeline viewer to P, just so it is easy to do from my JKL finger positions - just a preference to keep it on my right hand. Q is very easy too of course, I’m just less dextrous with my left fingers
Fantastic... These are great tips for custom shortcuts... It's about speed of course and sounds like this is the perfect setup for you. Thanks for sharing! 🙏🏻
VERY USEFUL THANK YOU
You’re welcome 🙏🏻
And the reason this isn't covered in Resolve downloadable tutorials is....
Good question… I’ve found it was a bit of a niche subject which is what made me want to demonstrate it in this video..
Thank you. Very clear description and VERY helpful, I have subscribed.
Awesome! Thanks for commenting and subscribing! Pleased to hear it helped. 🙏🏻
Hi Chris, great tutorial about using the Cut page. What am i doing wrong - i put markers in my timeline and when i try dragging the top timeline playhead i keep grabbing and moving the markers instead of the playhead.
Thank you! Yeah, I know what you mean about moving the markers instead of the playhead in the upper Cut page timeline so you're not alone! Mainly this happens if the marker is still "selected", such as just after you've added it. You'll see this is the case if the marker has a thick border around it... Clicking away from the marker deselects it, meaning it's easier to select and drag the playhead. It's still fiddly though, so if I was you, just click the top of the timeline to move the playhead away from the marker to drag it. HTH!
Thank you for your clarity on an issue that was doing my head in :).
Honestly, you're not the only one! It took me a while to work this out for myself too. Glad to hear it's helped!
Thanks, Chris! Very helpful tutorial.
Fantastic. Thanks for commenting. Much appreciated 🙏🏻
Nice one Chris - great video, good to see you back 👍 I'd really love to see you do a tutorial on general editing techniques for documentary or UA-cam style content. Things like how to retain interest in a video, what type of cut to use where, how long to stay on a clip before switching to another one. It'd be great to tap into some of your expertise on those hard to find rules of thumb.
Thanks for this... I'll have to have a think about editing tips... Problem is that it's really hard to describe what's right and wrong when it comes to editing. There are no rules as such and different content calls for different editing styles. There have been projects that I've had to create an editing style for because of the way they were shot! Stay tuned!
@@Chris.Roberts one of the things that really helped me was in one of the videos you did for Black Magic you said that a fade to black transition usually denotes a change in time or a change in location. That helped me no end - probably dead obvious to you but was something I didn't know. More like that would be great - cheers 😁
@radboogie cool thanks for that. I see where you’re coming from! 👍🏻
This has helped me understand the Dynamics panel a lot more, thanks. But I'm puzzled about one thing though. Why did you further lower the low levels using the Expander first, given they were already too low to start with?
Great question. I wanted to show the Expander to provide context for the Gate and the Compressor so you could see how each process affected the signal. Using the Gate provided for effective noise reduction for this signal which you should be able to hear, especially if you’re listening on headphones. Hope this helps and thanks for commenting! 🙏🏻
Thank you. I like to preserve that same folder structure and I find that preserve hierarchy option so hard to use. I find myself having to count the slashes in a terminal path to get it correct and even then I often stuff it up. I don’t know why Blackmagic makes this hierarchy functionality so confusing. Or maybe it’s just me being dumb 😂
Yes, it's a little quirky I agree... I usually just media manage into the same folder. I guess keeping the source media folders on one level as much as possible might help you... so long as the media all ends up in the right place everything else should be fine! 👍🏻
Thank you, for some reason My version 19.0.1 doesn show the Dialogue leveler as a stand alone pugin, only can appl clip by clip, hmmmm
Hi! The Dialogue Leveler is only available as a track-based effect, so will apply to all clips on the same track. You can enable it either in the Fairlight page as I did in the video, or on the Edit page in the track inspector. HTH!
U'r just the best and by far the most professional person making DaVinci tutorials, and its for free!!! Ty so much for sharing a so huge exp u have. Really apreciated. Best.
Very kind of you to say! And you're very welcome ☺️
Concise, clear, and easy to understand. Favorite! Come back again soon, Chris!
Thank you! That's great to hear and I'll return soon!
my problem is that anytime i do a trim, the timeline view instantly shoots back to the very start of the timeline... it is irritating.
That's very strange behaviour that I've not come across before and is not normal. Does it persist when you restart the software or are you using a custom keyboard layout?
I would love to see this extended to controlling and refining loudness levels (LUFS) for a mix to UA-cam, for example. I always struggle to compress the output, raising it to the -14 dB LUFS without also exceeding the -1.5 dB peak (meaning that I don't have the dynamics compressed enough, I suppose). Would love some pointers on achieving this in a future tutorial, presumably leveraging much of what you presented here. Thanks Chris!
Hey this is all in there already. In the export presets there are options for optimizing the levels for UA-cam, Netflix, EBU etc. loudness. I would recommend bouncing your audio mix down to a single track before exporting though. Using this option, you just need to create decent mix before output. HTH!
@@Chris.Roberts I will give that a try. Prior to that feature, I've seen some tutorials where an attempt is made to perform this balancing act manually using a combination of compression and limiting - I've always struggled to get that right. Thanks for the suggestion, Chris! Add - I just gave it a try with your sample material and it worked brilliantly! Of course, it's important to get the right mix and compression first, but then to have Resolve optimize the loudness to a given standard is just amazing. Thx again.
... and that is why you are watching, isn't it? 😂👍👏🏻Thank you, Chris, for another gem! And BTW, couldn't you make a video of copy/paste segments in the timelines? I can't figure that out, no matter what. Thanks!!! 🙏
Thanks for commenting! 🙏🏻 Copy and pasting clips in the timeline... I'll add it to the list. Thanks for the suggestion 👍🏻
