      i wear gloves anytime i work on a customers car. It helps somewhat on getting minor cuts but also helps protect from oils and chemicals I tend to come in contact with. They have also saved me from customers coming back and saying I left dirty fingerprints in their car.

    Getting the S spring back in was probably the hardest part for me, great video! You can actually change the steel and clutch plate sequence (using 2 old ones) to “clutch-steel-clutch-steel-clutch-steel-clutch” this will make the diff lock harder and better, especially for drifting!

      Painting the cover would hinder the heat dissipation.

    • @chrisfix
      @chrisfix  6 років тому +49

      What Matthew said. It is aluminum and painting the surface will put a barrier between the aluminum and the air which heat transfers.

    • @usedtoknow372
      @usedtoknow372 6 років тому

      But then again isn't paint thicker than air + you increase the surface size of the cover (by small amount) thus actually increasing heat transfer?

    • @chrisfix
      @chrisfix  6 років тому +57

      Paint is an insulator and doesnt transfer heat as good as aluminum. Even if we increased the surface area, you still need something that transfers heat well. Great question!

    Hey Chris! I just wanted to say that all your videos are fantastic in general, not only informative but also entertaining! This video of the clutch pack replacement was especially informative and saved me HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS by giving me the confidence to make repairs to my differential myself instead of taking it to a driveline shop.
    I own a 1997 Ranger/Mazda 4X4 and it has the 8.8 inch LS axle just like your Mustang. At the end of last winter I noticed a slight "clunk" that reverberated through the driveshaft whenever the truck was in gear and I either accelerated or decelerated. I could tell that there was some slop in the driveline somewhere and eventually determined it was in the rear axle itself. Back in the spring the clunk got worse and I was beginning to think I'd end up having to buy a used axle to fix the problem, mainly because I knew taking it to a shop would be more expensive than most used axles go for.
    I finally got the courage to open up the diff. When I did, as the oil began to run out, pieces of metal started to fall out into the drain pan; my heart sank. When I finally pulled the cover completely off I discovered even larger chunks of metal in the bottom of the housing, a couple almost 1/4 inch in length. I cleaned everything out/off with brake cleaner and then inspected everything, totally expecting to find the ring and pinion messed up. What I found was that both of the spider gears had chunks out of every single tooth. I was surprised to see that the side gears had a lot of wear but no damaged teeth. As I looked further into the diff I was amazed, and relieved, to find that neither the ring or pinion had any damage to them. What's more, they showed very little wear and the backlash was extremely small. Yay! (Amazing considering the truck has 265,000 mi on it. Guess that running full synthetics plus my annual ritual of changing ALL of my truck's fluids annually has paid off.) Still, I sat back and thought to myself that replacing all the internals would be a major job (and required the removal of the entire carrier assembly) and probably required tools I didn't have access to. It's worthy to note that the Ranger is my ONLY vehicle, and I don't have a garage to work in, so doing any work that would take more than a weekend was a BIG issue.
    I decided to take a break, have a cup of coffee and see what I could find on the Internet about repairing the 8.8 diff. Lots of stuff written on some of the ranger only sites and a few videos showing rebuilding the differential with the carrier on a workbench. Everything seemed to indicate that I was in for a big job. Looking around UA-cam I got distracted and kinda went on a tangent away from my specific search (go figure! LOL). I saw one of your videos about something (I forget what) and watched it. Then I noticed the carbon fiber clutch pack video and decided to watch it just for grins. I got excited when I saw you were working on the ford 8.8 axle; exactly what my Ranger has! By the end of the video I realized that replacing the spider and side gears not only didn't require the removal of the carrier, but the job was just plain dirt simple! I cleaned the gears and housing up really well, counted teeth of all the gears, wrote down all the numbers on the ring and pinion, buttoned up the axle and filled it with fluid. I decided that as long as I drove like I was walking on eggshells it would last a few more weeks until I could order all the parts. Locally all the parts were ridiculously expensive and all had to be ordered in (I'm in BF Nebraska), so I researched specs and searched the Internet for the correct parts. I eventually found all the parts, clutch packs and gears, online (all Genuine Ford Parts) for right at $200 (over $400 locally for aftermarket parts) and got them ordered.
    Everything was delivered in just a few days and after having to dodge several waves of cold, rainy and snowy weather, I finally had a break and went to work. Interestingly, the set up; blocking and raising the truck, removing the wheels, collecting tools, draining the diff, etc, took MORE time than it actually took to pull the old gears and clutch packs, set up the new ones and install them in the carrier. All thanks to your video! You da man!! I can't thank you enough for giving me the knowledge and confidence to do this repair myself.
    PS: You might wonder how and why the gears got screwed up, I sure did. I watched a couple of vids on how a limited slip works and, after pulling and inspecting the gears and clutch packs, I think I figured it out. I had loaned my truck to a friend in the late spring and he told me that he'd gotten stuck in a mudhole out in the country (so much for just "driving to town"). Looking back I realized that it was not long after that was when I noticed the "clunk" had grown much worse. I figure he did a lot of tire spinning and slamming gears between first and reverse trying to get unstuck, before he figured out that he had to lock the manual hubs I'd installed in order for the four wheel drive to actually work. The clutch pack fiber and steel plates were already extremely worn and the LS couldn't have still been working, so when the wheels spun there was enough force to cause the spider gears to jump a tooth, chipping them in the process. Those chipped pieces probably contributed to further damage as well. All in all I got DAMNED LUCKY that there wasn't more extensive damage. Moral of the story? Don't make exceptions and DON"T loan your daily driver to ANYONE, not if you want it back in one piece! LOL

    If you don't have gasket sealer, anything that is tacky or sticky will also work,.to hold the gasket in place. Like a skim coating of grease,.or even petroleum jelly. Something I learned replacing the gasket on a trail fix on a friend's Jeep, years ago.
    It's SOP for a trans pan gasket as well, and is often used when replacing oil pumps, as a packing material, to ensure that first prime on start up.
    On the pin bolt, been there, done that. Bolt walked out in my 89 Dakota Shelby, driving back from Buffalo NY, in 98. Shattered one spider gear, snapped the shaft, and gouged the housing. Ended up cpntacing Currie, and swapping in a twin trac 8.8 unit from an Explorer, at that point, built by them, as well as going to 3.73 gears, from 3.55s.
    Lowered top end a little, but you could feel the difference when you sank the loud pedal. Shaved 4 tenths off in the quarter, which is what we built it for.
    Ex wife now owns it, a gift from us, at a couple tracks in her area.
