I loved my 2001 740i, got it with 74k miles and set about to replace everything that needed it. Complete suspension, guibo, center driveshaft bearing, entire cooling system after a catastrophic failure, stereo with factory widescreen NAV, grill and more I am sure I am forgetting. If you are unable to work on them yourself and only write checks for others to work on them, they are a horrible car. If you can turn your own wrenches they are the easiest car in the world to work on. Everything is assembled logically and it is the smoothest car for traveling you can own. I only sold mine because we moved out to the country and I knew the dirt roads would destroy it after two years and thousands of dollars to restore it.
OMG. When I saw this video, my jaw dropped. No, no nonooonoo! I owned an E38, a 2001 740i Sport and it was a NIGHTMARE, not just a nightmare but the absolute worst nightmare I've ever owned in my life. I never thought I'd be triggered by a Hoovie's Garage video!
But to be fair, it's the only car I've accidentally (legit, accidentally) gotten a 100+ mph speeding ticket in. I thought I was doing like, 65. The car was too comfortable... when it wasn't sitting in pieces in my driveway.

In all fairness, I think Tyler wants his 7-series to be to a higher standard than that M6. That 7 is still a really nice car, it's just the labor behind fixing those seals. Once he gets it sorted, it really should be good to go. You know, unless the Hoovie BMW curse kicks in and his mere proximity is enough to make the car spontaneously explode itself one piece at a time.
"This time I got a good one". 20 years old, deferred maintenance and repairs, headliner drooping, obviously knackered suspension, check engine light on and so on. By a good one we don't mean a shiny sh1tbox.
I still remember the glowing descriptions of BMW’s “green” plan to make recyclable cars way back in the 80’s. Guess they made good on that dream. They’re nice cars to buy new. Once off warranty, it’s time to put them in the blue dumpster.
I would replace buy with lease, and only if you can bury most of it in business expenses. Buy one and you'll suffer horrific depreciation & have to deal with time lost if it has to go back for warranty issues. Otherwise I totally agree, they are disposable commodities, like pretty much every mid-tier luxury car is these days, especially the German ones. This is of course totally on purpose to drive new car sales, and of course, they do not give one shit about the amount of pollution and landfill they are generating, as long as the cash keeps rolling in - sure you can recycle the steel, aluminium and copper, but most of the hard plastics & electronics in them are destined for landfill, and there are a LOT of hard plastics and electronics. Green my arse.
I own 2 BMW's far out of warranty. It's not as bad as people make it seem at all. Negligence is what makes them get a bad rep. But, when you can buy a 500hp M car for $3k, I don't care about the rep. Keep saying they are horrible lol. I will buy them.
Europe screwed up by pushing "greener" plastics and rubbers onto automakers. A ton of them wound up biodegrading far faster than expected! If 80s-90s Germans could have used American and Japanese plastics and rubbers, the cars would have been completely bulletproof.
Car Ninja Shop Rate is $89 on the invoice. The hours to change timing guide is 21.6 HOURS = $1922 labor alone !!!!! and 6 hours for the Trans seal = $534 ........OUCH

@@pencilboy34 I work at a new car dealership and that's what we charge. Granted it's Massachusetts so everything is more expensive here but we're a Japanese brand... $89 is a great rate
I'd wager that the 18" M-Parallel wheels are the most iconic and best looking mainstream BMW wheels ever made. Back in '99 these looked huge and were so BOSS... but in a dignified way. They still look fantastic 20+ years later.
Such a iconic car, in my opinion one of the best 7’s next to the E32. Timeless design. From the history to the 2pac story, it is truly one of the ultimate driving machines.
One of my favorite pieces of car-related TV is Tom Ford's reaction to the Bangle-era 7 series on _Fifth Gear_ back in 2002. "The bloke that designed it, Chris Bangle, says that it communicates 'dynamism, performance, and on-the-road presence.' No, Chris, it doesn't. It communicates fatness, weirdness, and what-the-HELL-is-thatness. Y'see, there's a problem with this bit of the boot here. It might contribute to great aerodynamic efficiency, but it looks like it was built by gibbons with access to welding equipment."
I found it ugly at first too but I ended falling in love with the 745s with the sport pack and then facelift 750 was even more improved. I myself had two e39 540s and when the e60 545i I wasn’t the big of a fan but I ended up loving it and had two e60 550s with sport package. The tech and feeling of the e60 was on a whole different level. My 07 550i had a sticker of $80k. Night vision camera and HUD just to name a few was crazy. I think the design aged really well too,I wouldn’t mind driving an e60 even today.
German plastics and rubbers in the 90s were often complete shit. The metal parts were great though! I have a 03 540i Sport similar to this one. Great car, well built, but plastics and seals are biodegrading after all these years. The good thing is that as long as you keep replacing the plastic and rubber parts, these cars will run forever.
People can say whatever they like about BMW's... in general buying a used car is only going to be as good the people that owned it before you. Take the most reliable vehicle you can think of and skip oil changes, run crap gas and treat it poorly and you will have a bad experience. Speaking personally, I own and currently run an E36 M3 and E39 M5 and both have been excellent cars. I bought them both used, from a previous owner that I trusted and admired with confidence that they took care of these vehicles since new. Run good oil and gas, have a relationship with your vehicle and you can truly enjoy a BMW. These cars are not meant for those who want bluetooth and cupholders...
In fairness, NOTHING is worse than a Lambo. Actually, a McLaren. Consumer Reports just did a cost of ownership bar graph. They had to extend the page for BMW. First five years, very good; next ten years, total nightmare. My personal BMW made nightmare was not a BMW, but a MINI JCW. I managed to pump about 15,000$ into it in 5 years, before I gave in, and just cut my losses.
"they lease cheaply" spot on. That is how they are still on the market. I had an E21 and an E30, my dad had the E21 (bought it brand new in 1975) and friends around me had E36, E38, E34 and E39. For me personally, the E38, E39 and E46 represent the end of the line for BMW for the respective series. Anything later is only junk, when compared (at least in my eyes). I still have an E46 330Cd. After having moved on to a 2015 Audi A6 Allroad, I returned to the much more agile BMW, that had been sitting, waiting. Daunted at first by the complexity, well, for my standards, I now do all of the work myself. Although it is a "mechanic-friendly" car (i.e. it enjoys _very_ regular maintenance) I don't regret it. Definitely a keeper.
@@awfultruth6216 The E34 remains the best looking 5-series as well. The E28 is cooler, but uglier. My perfect BMW garage is E30, E34 and E38. What have I owned? This is why people need to find a good private mechanic hopefully one that specializes in that Brand. At one time I had a Volvo a Acura and a Honda Pilot. I had 2 mechanics one that specialized in Volvos only and one that specialized in Hondas. The Volvo Dealer that it was bought new from wanted to sell you the same car twice once when you bought it and again through their service department they also had a Young Female Service Advisor who knew nothing about Cars and was probably only qualified to work at the Gap. She once told me that my 5K Service was $100.00 which is only an oil change which I questioned it she replied that well we also lubricate the Power Antenna Shaft. Well I guess it is worth $70.00 to take a can of WD-40 spray it on a rag and rub it on the Antenna. Another time they wanted to charge me $2500.00 to fix my AC because It had a bad compressor and condenser that is when I found the private Volvo Mechanic. His first ? was did they even try to recharge it because in his 31 years he has never seen that model compressor fail that was used on 2 different models he recharged it and it was Ice Cold. With my Acura one day in stop and go Traffic on a hot day it overheated but I was close to home and took the next off ramp and if the car was moving the Temp Gauge would start to go down. I took it to the Acura Dealer near where I work the next day (if the car was moving the Temp Gauge would stay in range) just to have it checked out. They called me later on saying the entire engine would have to be rebuilt keep in mind the car was running fine. I declined and drove the car home I think they just wanted to scare me and trade it in cheap on a new car. That is when I found the Private Honda Mechanic They topped off the coolant or changed it checked over the engine and said it was perfectly fine and charged me Less than $50.00 With my Honda Pilot when it was relatively new I brought it in for an oil change at 15K miles and was informed that I needed to change my differential fluid and replace the rear brakes the car was still under warranty so I would only take it to a Honda dealer until the warranty expired in case there ever were any problems after that it would go to the Private Honda Shop.
He probably got it very cheap (its hoovie) so if the milage is low, then something else is wierd. In this case maintenance is probably minimal on this car.... probably only oil changes and never done anything else...
Every time I watch a Hoovie video on BMWs, I feel like the luckiest man alive. I've owned two 3-series for the last 18 years, a '99 323i and '02 M3. Aside from two recalls and new tires, neither has needed a mechanic in ~150k miles. I've done consumables - fluids and brakes, water pump on the 323, rear subframe bushings on the M3 (most involved repair), and ignition coils/plugs around 110k miles - that was the only time I've seen the check engine light in 13 years and 50k miles of M3 ownership. Everything was cheap to replace myself. Maybe the e46 is the high watermark for BMW because nothing about my experience would make me think BMWs are junk. I do admit I have no desire to own a newer one.
Same here. I have an 08 528 that ive owned since new. 115k miles later and its been the most reliable car. Only cel was for a valve cover oil leak that wiped out a coil pack. Fixed all the oil leaks & vanos stuff around 100k and its been perfect. I would never buy a newer one. Long live the N/A I-6!!!
My '04 E46 320i also has zero issues. From what I can tell is that old BMW's suffer from extreme climates/weather. Germany and most of Europe have very moderate temperatures. They rust like crazy in salty sea weather. And the plastics (o so much plastic) become brittle and break after long cold winters and hot summer days.
I mean y’all have mainly drive to the BMW straight six engines. They are relatively bulletproof besides the weak cooling system. Hoovie gets the V8’s and they are problematic as I have found out.
I was lucky to have owned 2 740 IL’s ... the only BMW products I ever owned. They were works of art. And the way the dash is aimed at the driver. The dampened suspension system alone was incredible.
Car Ninja's parts prices are huge. In UK those suspension arms are £30-50, about $40-70 rather than $246. Even Lemforder OE parts are only £145, ($180).
Agree. They appear to get ripped off blind in the US all round on car servicing. Most of our manual BMW diesels are bullet proof along with most other German Diesels. You get the odd electrical gremlins but it’s nowhere near the level of crap they deal with. Petrol and auto is the sole reserve of the Japanese. German forget it but they don’t seem to learn in the US.
A good running example of an E38 will be one of the best big car driving experiences because this car hides it's size and weight amazingly. Ride and handling especially in the M Sport configuration is spot on too.
I finally understand. Keep knocking down the BMW's Hoovie, your only doing me the biggest favor in the world by keeping the prices low. Keep up the good work.
Bro, its a 20 year old car! Its a cream puff that needs some TLC, I wish I had space for a E38 7er but my E39 M5 is enough fun for me. I hope it goes to someone who will appreciate that 7er
yes! i would disagree though, the m57 diesel engine that was available in europe in the e38 is pretty much one of the best, most reliable engines bmw ever produced and coupled with the zf transmission makes for a very nice daily drivable (7-8 liters/100km) 7 series.
Worked at a euro mechanic shop when I was a teen and that car right there has more issues then any other car that I can remember. Massive electrical issues and a guy brought one by after he was rear ended... hit him less then 5mph and it bent the frame and totaled it... my god!! But this car drives like a dream....
@Mr. Cairo Minimal electronics you say? You should read up on the "magical" EWS III system (sarcasm implied), and how it essentially "bricks" your bimmer if you try starting with a low battery. A trip to the dealer for EWS/DME resync (or DIY) would be in order then... But yes, no real "infotainment" package like today's vehicles.
Be careful with the e34's super solid mechanically but the clear coat will start pealing very quickly because it was one of the first years that BMW used a paint and then clear coat. And getting it repainted cost's 5000...
Also e38 are great, I own one but they tend to be a ticking time bomb so when one thing goes wrong everything goes wrong just had to replace the transmission in mine.
Our 740IL black on black was purchased new in 2001. Still running strong with just over 100k miles. Our Motorola BMW cell phone worked until Verizon stop supporting that technology. Love the car and plan on keeping it forever.
LOVE the car. Especially those M parallel wheels... BMW has the best OEM wheels in my opinion AND TO TOP IT OFF THE CAR NINJA SAID HIS FAVORITE BMW IS THE E36 M3

FFS, it's 20 years old, of course it needs a suspension refresh, no car's suspension will be good at 20 years old without new parts. The other issues are minor things that need doing periodically, do them and it will be good for 10 years + :p
I'm sorry but I disagree a bit. I got a 12-year-old Toyota with 329,000 miles. still rolling on all the original suspension other than the struts which I just changed. The engine doesn't leak a drop, the transmission doesn't leak a drop, I changed the water pump which started leaking at 285,000 mi. I literally put more miles on my Toyota in the last 2 years than this thing has had on it in 20. I'm sorry but these German cars seem to be absolute crap. I do agree with him that that particular generation of seven series is one of the best looking ever made. But you better have deep pockets if you ever want to own one used. You really are better off to buy it new lease it for two years and ditch it. I'm sorry but to me that isn't a quality-built car. Is my Toyota as exciting to drive as this BMW No. Do I care... No
It seems like several people, Hoovie included, drove their dad's - or their friend's dad's - 740/750iL and fell in love with cars. Is this a trend maybe? I sure did! And I'd still rather drive a BMW above all other German cars, except the 911.
@Burleon I believe a low percentage of 60's vehicles were equipped with AC. 14s 1/4 mile times would also not be common since most 60's sedans were 6cyl or small blocks. Also this was the late 90's, not the 60's, so American sedans of the era were total garbage.
Here in Germany, we call our cars "first owner cars", that means buy New, drive for 80,000 kms and then sell it to east Europe. That's how it should be done, oh, and BMW's are considered reliable for us, unlike the Audis.

I owned two of them. Wonderful cars. The ones with straight 6. Both had over 220k miles on them. both wrecked by me!!!. I wrecked my e39 and bought another one.Alternator, window regulator and drive shaft bearing. Only things i fixed.
I bought an E36 M3 in technoviolet metallic for my wife's birthday on year and we loved it. I wanted to get her an E46 M6 but she talked me into the E36
I bought one of those new in 1998. After driving it the first time my thought was that this will not age well with so many computers controlling so many things. I didn't know the engine was junk as well.
Mexican Spec the electronics on these are actually pretty reliable. One my fail occasionally, but it’s uncommon, and replacement modules are all over ebay for cheap. The timing chain guides on the M62 is the repair everyone fears, but if it’s not your primary car, the repair is t that complicated, it just takes time to remove the accessories from the front of the engine and the covers. Fortunately there’s is plenty of room to work, unlike newer models.
Timing chains are meant to be service-free.... What is the point of using a timing chain instead of a belt, when you need to service them as often as a belt???
I agree about the W-140. I’ve had mine for four years and 37,000 miles and not very costly to maintain considering its 25 years old. I always loved this second series, but this video convinces me to stand clear.

I owned the 5 series version of this car for 11 years. Same spec same engine model E39 which in my opinion is the nicest 5 series ever produced. It was a 2000 year and in all those years it only required a MAF. It was serviced every year using quality parts and the best oil I could find. If the check engine light on a BMW ever goes out permanently it’s probably the bulb.
I wondered that on my 1997 e36, turns out that regular maintenance and oil changes stops that happening even at 312000 miles.

I still remember the glowing descriptions of BMW’s “green” plan to make recyclable cars way back in the 80’s. Guess they made good on that dream. They’re nice cars to buy new. Once off warranty, it’s time to put them in the blue dumpster.
I literally just watched the old 90's episode of top gear on that like 5 days ago actually lol
My fave BMW ever. Tomorrow Never Dies and The Transporter made me fall in love with them!

Such a iconic car, in my opinion one of the best 7’s next to the E32. Timeless design. From the history to the 2pac story, it is truly one of the ultimate driving machines.
2pac rode a 95 honda civic with neon lights down to Vegas that's how he was spotted in the dessert.

"Can't be worse than a Lambo"
"heh heh"
You should find a spot for the E34. It wasn't as good as the E39 in terms of performance, but it was way better in terms of built quality.

That is when I found the Private Honda Mechanic They topped off the coolant or changed it checked over the engine and said it was perfectly fine and charged me Less than $50.00
With my Honda Pilot when it was relatively new I brought it in for an oil change at 15K miles and was informed that I needed to change my differential fluid and replace the rear brakes the car was still under warranty so I would only take it to a Honda dealer until the warranty expired in case there ever were any problems after that it would go to the Private Honda Shop.
Leave it to Hoovie to find a nice E38 that needs more repairs than a riced out M6 V10.
Where were the cars made, are you European? What's the 11th digit on the vin number?
I stilll have a e46 323i and have not had one problem
I was lucky to have owned 2 740 IL’s ... the only BMW products I ever owned. They were works of art. And the way the dash is aimed at the driver. The dampened suspension system alone was incredible.
"Short wheelbase" you can park a Smart car in that wheelbase lenght

So apt, I was wondering if he did that on purpose.
Jordan Chance his wallet is crying now
He plays it every time he gets an estimate
Great song!
Let me know when you are ready to sell it. I’m guessing about 10 days.
I still prefer the M6 (without the eBay wing and house siding).
JR go removed that junk already.
It's really a beautiful car that is absolutely trash. But the e38 is a classic
"It might be worth putting money into" Hoovies famous last words

Good man!
"nearly ruined financially in college"
He would have had to ask daddy for another million.
This is my favorite gen 7-series, when they were still made with the German mindset of “you are driving so focus on that”
My favorite BMW ever. I had one with the V12, beautiful to look at, beautiful to drive..........when it wasn't in the shop.
Grave Flower same for Mercedes V-12.
Get an EU spec.
This was my first car. 2500 bucks and it never left me stranded. I loved it so much. I was another one.
I saw "Who's Crying Now" on the screen. How appropriate.
A good running example of an E38 will be one of the best big car driving experiences because this car hides it's size and weight amazingly. Ride and handling especially in the M Sport configuration is spot on too.
"it's a better car anyway, I have 2 more cylinders" Classic JR... this one will become a classic.
Finally the 7 series model I’ve been waiting for him to get
I finally understand. Keep knocking down the BMW's Hoovie, your only doing me the biggest favor in the world by keeping the prices low. Keep up the good work.
THANK YOU!!!! SOMEONE GETS IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Are you looking to get one or something?
No not really, just an enthusiast who appreciates those who help keep prices in low
Bro, its a 20 year old car! Its a cream puff that needs some TLC, I wish I had space for a E38 7er but my E39 M5 is enough fun for me. I hope it goes to someone who will appreciate that 7er
No, the greatest 7-Series is the e32.
And the M60 V8 of the e32 and early e38 Models does not have any of the BMW V8 issues you always mention.
yes! i would disagree though, the m57 diesel engine that was available in europe in the e38 is pretty much one of the best, most reliable engines bmw ever produced and coupled with the zf transmission makes for a very nice daily drivable (7-8 liters/100km) 7 series.
@@rocknrolla7288 the tds engine on the e38 is greater😂

Worked at a euro mechanic shop when I was a teen and that car right there has more issues then any other car that I can remember. Massive electrical issues and a guy brought one by after he was rear ended... hit him less then 5mph and it bent the frame and totaled it... my god!! But this car drives like a dream....
Pinnacle of the 7 series the E38 is such a beautiful car especially in this spec.
Funny, there is an old E34 5 series on my run each morning and today I was thinking it might be nice to get one of these E38s...
I was thinking the same last night... doing a nice alpina build to start my channel
I have one with 65,000 miles😅👀
Be careful with the e34's super solid mechanically but the clear coat will start pealing very quickly because it was one of the first years that BMW used a paint and then clear coat. And getting it repainted cost's 5000...
Also e38 are great, I own one but they tend to be a ticking time bomb so when one thing goes wrong everything goes wrong just had to replace the transmission in mine.
Still waiting for Hoovie to talk about the Z3 M
Our 740IL black on black was purchased new in 2001. Still running strong with just over 100k miles. Our Motorola BMW cell phone worked until Verizon stop supporting that technology. Love the car and plan on keeping it forever.
Look on the bright side Hoovie. At least when you’re done pulling your hair out, you’ll look like Jason Statham cruising around in your740!!!
nope. the bright side is after spending 5500 on the car he can sell it for 3000
harmadikszem yeah... $3000 plus $20000 or more from UA-cam revenue... looks like a profit
@@harmadikszem I'll gladly give him 3k for it.
youngmauro12 i dont envy him. I hope he make as much as he feel good about it.
LoL, song playing on the radio "Who's Crying Now?" Um, Hoovie?, 😂🤣
LOVE the car. Especially those M parallel wheels... BMW has the best OEM wheels in my opinion
AND TO TOP IT OFF THE CAR NINJA SAID HIS FAVORITE BMW IS THE E36 M3
Until you deal with them and realize they are impossible to balance. I hate BMW wheels, the whole cars are nothing but shimmy shake factories. The only thing an old BMW is good for is mixing paint.
@@herbienbrian2 Had a bad experice I wager? Ive personally had nothing but good times rebuilding/balancing BMW wheels from that era. They are made by BBS most of the time aswell so its good stuff.
William skagen I was gonna say- I LOVE my old BMW. I don’t personally spend a lot of time hands on with BMW wheels I was mostly meaning aesthetic but you’re right BBS makes most!
FFS, it's 20 years old, of course it needs a suspension refresh, no car's suspension will be good at 20 years old without new parts. The other issues are minor things that need doing periodically, do them and it will be good for 10 years + :p
Duncan Gafney spot on ..... just like the x5 vid, cheap and old with and zero maintenance for a long time .. well surprise surprise . FFS indeed ..
No
Car Wizard: Never buy a BMW in these year ranges.
Hoovie: Goes out and buys a BMW in those year ranges.
E38's are so nice. My friend's dad had a 750iL when we were in highschool and it would run 14's with 3 or 4 people in the car and the A/C on.
They don't keep the maintained. Drive them too 100k miles with maybe 2 or 3 services and expect them to work 🤣
And yet everyone in Germany has a Ford
@@joshgladstone7119 only very poor people :)
So sieht es aus. Ich glaube, dass die Fahrzeuge in den USA schlicht nicht ausreichend gewartet werden. 100000km sind doch nix für ein 7er!

I owned a '95 740il and it was a good thing i paid for an after market warranty. It more than paid for itself. Great car to drive. Most of the repairs were maintenance items.

BMW makes one hell of an I6, but I'd never touch one of their V8's.

They are great cars and easy to work on.
And not every e38 is bad. Been with mine since 2004. Proactive maintenance is key to keeping them running well. If you can't do this then you shouldn't really be driving one.
FurryNutz740iL well said. If you can’t do that to any car off it’s warranty you should go get another lease lol

@@RandomHondaGuy Exactly. For any car. If you don't maintain any car, it's not going to work well. 😐
These cars are fairly reliable compared to other bmw’s and if you’re wasting so much on maintenance it’s because you’re not doing the work yourself. I’ve owned mine for over 5 years now and this car is absolutely fantastic.
I'm listening to Johnny. "My heart goes to the E36 M3 but yeah, this is my second one." How do you feel about the E39 5 Series Johnny?
I owned two of them. Wonderful cars. The ones with straight 6. Both had over 220k miles on them. both wrecked by me!!!. I wrecked my e39 and bought another one.Alternator, window regulator and drive shaft bearing. Only things i fixed.
THe E34 and the E39 are the best ones.
Love the m62
He hates the E39 cause he can't make any real money on them.
I bought an E36 M3 in technoviolet metallic for my wife's birthday on year and we loved it. I wanted to get her an E46 M6 but she talked me into the E36
So true 90's M5, late 90's 7 series, and the 3 series throughout are so beautiful. I still remember Statham in the first transporter movie.
The engine itself is fantastic, I used to own a couple E38s. That timing chain guide is really the only Achilles heel.
The 740 and 99-03 XJR.. Perfect styling
Buying an old european car and expecting it to run perfectly - thanks for making used BMWs depreciate even faster!

The cars he gets are probably very poorly maintained and expects them to be brand new or some shit 🤣
No issues with reliability of BMWs here in Germany. Seems there are two sorts of BMWs....
Timing chains are meant to be service-free.... What is the point of using a timing chain instead of a belt, when you need to service them as often as a belt???

@@AnitaHannjob no kidding I love this first models they have an insane amount of options, what made you keep the sel and sell the s420? I owned the 5 series version of this car for 11 years. Same spec same engine model E39 which in my opinion is the nicest 5 series ever produced. It was a 2000 year and in all those years it only required a MAF. It was serviced every year using quality parts and the best oil I could find. Couple of pixels died during my ownership but easy fix in the UK. Eventually I was offered an amazing price for the car and I really struggled on wether to sell it. Turns out I wish that I had kept it as the 540i M Tech Sport is getting difficult to find in good condition. A quick check of the resources available in the UK shows the car fully legal and still being used. I put 70 Thousand miles of the car with regular maintenance and replacing consumables like brakes etc. Great car if looked after properly
