Just stumbled across this. In my state these can be registered as classic cars.
IMHO getting an e38 with high mileage today is not a bad idea. Only people who love these cars or their parents still have them. And the higher mileage means most of the parts have already been changed

CONGRATS man the first of many 1000`s to come !
I have virtually done exactly what you have done to my 728i, which is much more common in England. No cat delete but changed the fuel pressure regulator when I did the valve cover plugs etc. Incidentally I used BRISK racing plugs about the same price but a noticeable difference. As regards price the total including purchase, running costs & petrol is about the same as the mileage you travelled around 8500 so effectively 1 dollar a mile !!! I would say that's good value. Mine is on 184k and going strong, great cars if maintained properly.
Love the 3D plaque ! Peace & love to you & your lady. Andrew.

Good info brother. I bought 2001 740IL for $3,500 with 160,000 miles on it.... 3 months in I had to have the valve cover gaskets replaced along with the alternator gasket replaced. Ran about $1,000 with me supplying the valve cover gaskets. I've also changed the spark plugs and all 8 coil packs due to the oil leak causing a misfire. Also had to replace the driver door window motor. Also upgraded all the speakers to Bavesounds replacement speakers. Other than that. It runs smooth now.
Now I'm going to work on the interior... New headliner and carpet .. then bodywork....
But the timing chain money is already in the bank. Just waiting for it to happen... Lol
Thanks for all the info. One of the only English channels that give info on this awesome car.
    Cheers bud 🍻

I own a 1999 728i and I love it. As you said most of the work can be done without much of a fuss and cost. Changed the tranny fluid, filter and all other fluids and she purrs like a happy cat. Removed the EDC shocks as they were shot and swapped with a stock set including the correct mounts. replaced the lower front suspension at the same time along with brakes. Valve cover gaskets, sump gaskets, plugs, faulty MAF and a fuel regulator later, no leaks. However one of the valve springs broke one day on the highway and had to do a top end overhaul. Used the opportunity to replace all cooling and fuel hoses and engine mounts. All in all, worth every penny! Cant compare a 38. regardless of year or powerplant. Greetings from Sunny Sri Lanka!!

Firstly, great video! Made me feel amazing about myself and my car!
Down to business... So, I bought my e38 m sport for $1,400.00 back in 2017... It wasn't very well cared for. The oil filter fell apart when I when to change it... Mismatch spark plugs and ignition coils... Rear wheel was on the front... But the paint and body were in good condition for a Michigan car of its age.
I've done a lot of work to my car... Front and rear suspension, LCM, spark plugs and coils, fuel filter and pump, o2 sensors, MAF sensor (multiple times), tires, recalibrated the sunroof, changed the brake fluid, all intake gaskets (including the oil separator), air filter (twice), valve cover gaskets, fuel injectors, various rubber fuel lines, wheel speed sensors, replaced a rear axle and hub assembly, new battery (twice), fixed my glove box and front cup holder, replace the hood emblem (two times (they keep blowing apart on the freeway! 😆)), and installed my own stereo system.
I've driven my car across the county twice now. When I bought it, it had about 130k miles on it. It now has about 150k miles on it... If I tally up everything apart from fuel, I doubt I've spent $6k on my car including buying it lol.
I'm going to dump a ton of money into it... Needs struts but I might go with coil-overs. I kinda want to replace the timing chain guides just for peace of mind. I want to change the fluid and filter in the trans. Paint and bodywork to fix the blisters and whatnot, the headliner is sagging, retint the windows, leaks oil and trans fluid (which is the same for power steering on this car... I think...?) but it's leaking from the hose near the clamp at the top. The oil leaks from basically everywhere, so I kinda wanna take the engine out and go over everything. I need to fix my cluster too, but I have a newer one (2010) with good pixels and stepper motors, I just need it reprogrammed or the parts changed over. I'd also like new floor mats. Maybe a twin turbocharger setup or a supercharger, possibly a nitrous oxide kit... Rear quarter curtains... Rear lights could stand to be replaced too... If I do add a supercharger or something like that and upgrade the struts, I'm going to want some sticky tires, so maybe another set of wheels? Kinda being able to go from 0 to 120+ mph in less than 11 seconds...but I do like being able to average 24-28mpg...

    • @ARPerez
      @ARPerez  3 роки тому

Awesome video, glad I stumbled across it. I laughed through your video as I've done everything you mention (except the cluster) and more over the years. The E38 is just awesome, I've had mine since 2008...a 2001 Sport built in the last month of production so has the widescreen. Bought it from the original owner. Take care of them and they last, but for sure not an Accord or Camry. Easy to work on. The lifetime fluid in the tranny is a joke, I installed a dipstick so drain/fill is easy and zero issues. For someone who is not afraid to get their hands dirty and appreciates the awesome German engineering of this era, highly recommended. Interesting that in the beginning of the video you mention "cult status rising rapidly".....I did not know more folk are beginning to appreciate these fine machines. Can't imagine how yours sounds with the mufflers removed, probably to loud for my taste but the sound must be awesome !!!

Nice! If you think about it, you drove a car that cost about $350 a month for a year (excluding the purchase price which I assume was cash). If you do all the service and repairs yourself it'd be even lower. So even with the gas prices, you are getting a car that is less than a new car but that's much better built and with way more comfort. I've got an E39 Touring that is lovely, but an E38 would be lovely. Gas prices are quite a bit higher in Europe though (about $6.8 a US gallon in my country).

Well... thats still double of what I pay for my 530d per year, and I can't fix anything myself... I calculated too, that I pay roughly the same for diesel than what I pay for Maintenance and service. I love the e38, but it would not be worth the double of running costs for me. That said: The works you did or got done sound reasonable to me. Give or take the muffler delete and the bling-bling.

I think I have the same or similar problem, it's more like a permanent hiss, even when the radio/sound is off, which is by far the most annoying part of it. When I turn the radio on or off I can "hear" silence for a fraction of a second, then hiss again. I too did replace all speakers but I doubt that's the reason for it. Did you find out the cause?
