Wife had a 2016 X1 "M" model that would have cost around $10K in parts and labor for 3 years of problems if it weren't for the warranty. As soon as that was up - it went. This along with more than $500 to replace a battery (you can't do it yourself without the right battery "calibration" tool) was all it took for me to never look at another one. One and done.
BMW's are like girlfriends. You have to maintain then regularly... Yeah its not going to be cheap but if you don't do it, it is going to leave you stranded at some point
Finally a true BMW on the channel, not a plastic crap. Just a tip for M20/M30 valve adjusments most of the time it is more reliable to shim it at the valve so when you adjust it it doesn't move the adjusment while tightening it. I'm sure Ninja has done it enough times to be able to do it from the first time everytime, but for us normal people it is very annoying to adjust the valve then assemble everything to have to adjust them again only because one of the valves moved while tightening.
As an ex BMW Dealership Parts Interpreter, this is so familiar to me. The same basket of goods America versus Australia, the price difference is vast. The dealer labour rate was $125/hour 7 years ago. Dealerships have standards they have to meet, so the labour rates are a lot higher to cover the outlay. Your local mechanic doesn't have a gigantic building to maintain, but then again they don't have all the specialist diagnostic machinery, and factory special tools either. It's your choice where you take your BMW, you do not have to take it to the Dealer, although warranty work has conditions. Genuine parts fitted elsewhere still have a warranty, but the parts must be on the vehicle, and inspected by the Dealer to consider being claimed under warranty. The warranty is also half the length of time as compared to dealer fitted. The good thing about BMW parts is that the part numbers are stamped on most parts, which makes identifying replacements simple and quick. Which is good because BMW part numbers are 11 numbers. There's also a Motorsport emblem on the left of the boot lid, looks like a wannabe addition.

Personally, I find the older M20 and M30 engines to be fun. They have tighter tolerances which makes older higher mileage engines run rougher, but I've never had a lot of trouble with them. Anything before 1995 is fun to work on.
@@FishFind3000 just to be clear, there was no lasting damage done to the transmission, and tyler did admit that he was acting overly dramatic. Ik it was probably a joke but for anyone reading who doesnt know, there are no hard feelings between hoovie and the wizard 👍
I've done all the work on my e60 with n62 engine. It has not been to bad and this is the first car I've really ever worked on myself. I'm over 300k miles now. I would hate to think of what it would have cost me if I was paying someone, but doing it myself hasnt been to much.
If it's anything close to an audi mechanic, my buddy pockets $35 per hour, no matter how fast he goes. Dealerships bill at $175 per hour and pocket the difference.
FYI harsh solvents actually will go into your hands, directly into your bloodstream. Awful for the vital organs. Liver, kidneys etc. We're talking professionals here, not weekenders. Longterm exposure.
86/89 M20 engines were prone to the cylinder head bolts snapping off - not very common but BMW changed to Torx stretch bolts in late '89 for a reason and it is worth fitting them. You can replace the existing hex bolts one by one with Torx in a diagonal pattern, takes about an hour or so all in. I had two cars that did it, a 1987 E28 520i (no damage) and a 1989 325i when the camshaft lobe punched the bolt head through the centre coolant gallery. That made a mess.
I have a mechanic friend who specializes in Nissans and while they are certainly not the most reliable brand out there (especially for a Japanese one), he says his biggest regret is not having gone for BMWs like one of his buddies who is now making literal millions...
My son's work for huge tech firms in Seattle. They owned BMW's for years. M-3's, M-4s, M-5's. They all had to dump them. The cost of repairs was prodigious. Every time a service light went on it cost thousands. One designer son earns $200,000.00 plus a year and after he spent $40,000.00 in repairs on his M-3 ,after he spent $40,000.00 on the purchase price. He now drives a restored 1999 Honda Prelude, and a 1982 Delorean. He is perfectly happy finally.
I replaced the timing belt and water pump on my straight six Lexus by myself as well. Of course I didn’t have access to a repair shop, lift, specialized tools or a professional mechanic to do most of the work for me. Crawling around underneath my car in the driveway in the December wind and rain was fun. But it all came together in the end and was a good learning experience.
Range rover mechanics are worth more than the company itself.

Flamuri Shqipëtar në telefonin e tij e konfirmon. Bravo car ninja. In english: The Albanian flag on his phone confirms it.
Don't forget to film him changing the suspension parts too. This is so much better than any Lambo, Ferrari or Aston Martin video out there (Tavarish take note!) :D
Anyone else catch the e28 on the lift in the background? haha I miss my old BMW e28. This video definitely brings back some memories. When I did my first timing belt I remember the tensioner spring and metal pin was missing. 😳 The PO pryed the tensioner until it was in about the right place and tightened it down. Who knows how many miles it was driven like that. Good times.
"Hi Ninja, it's Mrs. Hoovie. Can you babysit Tyler for me? Thanks"
Jonny is such a nice, pleasant fellow, and obviously the Master Mechanic in Kansas!

@EFEZZE6280 Too soon? Hahaha!!!
BMW ownership is a lesson applied Stockholm syndrome.
Spend a year worth of weekends and $10k to end up with a car worth $7k on a good day? Sounds great to me.
My E39 525D M-Sport Individual was a nightmare and hardly anything worked in the last stretch of its life before it burned, but man I would love the torture of owning one again.
@@Tomazack there's nothing like them when everything works as it should.
@Tone. I'd take a modern Alfa over the latest crop of BMWs.
@Tone. Woah, let's not get crazy here😀
The Ninja is an awesome alli to have as these BWW's are now considered almost exotic cars! I hope to see more of these car restoration and improvements! Great channel and great friendship! Take care and thank you two for this coverage!
Anyone else want to see this car get professionally detailed in a future video?
Yes! The paint needs some love.
When you're a UA-camr, 2:30 in the afternoon is "bright and early".
That's because we sit up until 2:00 or 3:00 in the morning editing videos.
My nocturnal, self-employed self agrees with that, as I type this at 2:58AM 😀
BMW's are like girlfriends. You have to maintain then regularly... Yeah its not going to be cheap but if you don't do it, it is going to leave you stranded at some point
Also like a girlfriend they are cheaper to rent than own

Finally a true BMW on the channel, not a plastic crap. Just a tip for M20/M30 valve adjusments most of the time it is more reliable to shim it at the valve so when you adjust it it doesn't move the adjusment while tightening it. I'm sure Ninja has done it enough times to be able to do it from the first time everytime, but for us normal people it is very annoying to adjust the valve then assemble everything to have to adjust them again only because one of the valves moved while tightening.
Hell yeah Jonny! Making Albanians look good. What’s the name of his shop ?

unbolting my engine : yes! I can!
putting it back together : NO!

I have such respect for mechanics like Jonny. He's worth every penny!
Tyler is one of the most giving people I have ever known. Gave the car wizard a yacht and the car ninja a few private islands with frickin volcanoooes and sharks with frickin lazer beams.
Ninja just wanted his lift back. 😂
Unfamiliar toobox = every toolbox for tyler lol
Personally, I find the older M20 and M30 engines to be fun. They have tighter tolerances which makes older higher mileage engines run rougher, but I've never had a lot of trouble with them. Anything before 1995 is fun to work on.
The only thing this episode is missing is Ninja yelling at Hoovie for not holding the flashlight correctly, and then the tears that follow.
What! I knew the ninja was an OG but didn’t know he’s my kind 🇦🇱🇦🇱🇦🇱
The best kind of the world forever 🇦🇱🇦🇱🇦🇱🇦🇱

The only mechanic richer than BMW mechanics is the Car Wizard after meeting Hoovie 😘
not after ruining his amg sls transmission. 30k down the drain
@@FishFind3000 just to be clear, there was no lasting damage done to the transmission, and tyler did admit that he was acting overly dramatic. Ik it was probably a joke but for anyone reading who doesnt know, there are no hard feelings between hoovie and the wizard 👍
13:20 ninja is albanian, less goo I love him more now🇦🇱🇦🇱🇦🇱
@18:55 that start-up sounded niiiiice! Perfecto
I've done all the work on my e60 with n62 engine. It has not been to bad and this is the first car I've really ever worked on myself. I'm over 300k miles now. I would hate to think of what it would have cost me if I was paying someone, but doing it myself hasnt been to much.
The ninja is Albanian that’s cool! I always wondered where he was from
Tr AL TR AL
The dealership charges $2000 not the technician/mechanic. He will probably only see $200-260 of that.
....and NOW you see why the German luxury brands don’t build reliable cars anymore. There’s no profit in it....
If it's anything close to an audi mechanic, my buddy pockets $35 per hour, no matter how fast he goes. Dealerships bill at $175 per hour and pocket the difference.
Who else cringed when he used the parts cleaner bare handed? Solvent is bad stuff for your skin
yeah why the hell did he not have golves on
FYI harsh solvents actually will go into your hands, directly into your bloodstream. Awful for the vital organs. Liver, kidneys etc.
We're talking professionals here, not weekenders. Longterm exposure.
Using the parts cleaner is the one time I actually wear gloves when wrenching on shit
His face when you said “it seems like I just slow you down”
Damn Ninja is Albanian ,,ninja if you are reading this we proud of you
Why? Does that somehow make you special?
When you recognize the N54 in the 5 series and remember doing all the work he talked about
Yep for sure! Took like 6 hours the first time!
He now drives a restored 1999 Honda Prelude,and a 1982 Delorean.
I want this car so bad.
just love them, miss my old bmw 325 was so much fun back in the day
2002 and early 3 series. I have had several 6 series. Own 2002 540i, sport model.

A tip. Leave the belt on the water pump when loosening the water pump pulley bolts. It's much easier to break the bolts loose that way.
