    Youve been watching a few Bird videos and still asking if he had flaws in his game? Ok here's a quote from Jordan. Does his opinion count? Cause I guess Worthy's didn't.
    "You can't increase your jumping ability or your quickness. He makes up for it by using his head, analyzing the opponent. It makes him better than the competition. Consequently, he doesn't have a weakness."
    -Michael Jordan on Larry Bird.

    It’s a fairpoint about them having different primes. But remember that Jordan was in his prime as you said in 1991, and was teammates with Scottie Pippen. During that time, Bird was way past his own prime after having a broken back and surgery on both heels. Regardless, Bird faced Jordan and Pippen in their primes and consistently beat them. True, Bird and Jordan never faced each other simultaneously in their primes. But Bird beat Jordan in Larry's prime, and Bird beat Jordan in Jordan's prime.

  • @pookie717
    @pookie717 3 місяці тому +7

    When worthy saying that, he’s saying that he knew what Jordan was going to do every time, beat him 1v1. Not saying he wasn’t a good passer or didn’t look for passing at some point but when MJ had the ball he wanted to embarrass you by himself. So your only job was to try and be a better athlete and defend him as hard as you could. With Larry, you never knew what he was thinking when he approached you holding that ball. He might take you to the hole, he might pass fake you 3 times and hit a jumper in your face. He might pump fake you and make a no look pass. He might pump fake you, pass fake you and then hit a fade away. There’s many more scenarios I could list. You never know what he was going to do. The second you thought you knew what he was thinking he changed up the script. You had to play Larry as a chess player because there’s a million different scenarios that he’s already seen in his mind and is willing to make any one of those million moves. Thinker vs great athlete mindset. For the record, I have Bird and MJ tied at #1. I can’t pick. And talking about bird and his team, the Celtics came into birds rookie year after a season winning 29 which followed a year the Celtics only 32 wins. So 61 wins the two years combined before bird. Bird led the Celtics to 61 wins his rookie year. Bird was the only major change and turned a losing team into almost a 75% winning average team. Goats turn losers into winners. That’s his rookie year. MJ didn’t do that. He had to wait for bird to be beaten and broken before he became the true Jordan. But I still won’t pick between the two of them in a draft of them in their prime. They were both unstoppable and true winners that played the game the right way.
    Edit: sorry for the essay. Didn’t realize I typed so much but Jordan had to learn from bird about the mental game which led to Jordan’s greatness. Same with Kobe even though he didn’t play against him so there is a lot of nuance to how these others became so great that ties to Larry bird directly.

    Larry Bird - Top tier jump shooter. Top tier hustle. Top tier outlet passer. Top tier rebounder. Top tier free throw shooter. Top tier IQ. Top tier no-look passer. Top tier clutch. Top tier 3 pt shooter. Top tier playmaker. Top tier team leader. Top tier tap-passer. Top tier toughness. Great defender and the player with the least amount of weaknesses to his game in NBA history. His opponents feared him, and they have gone on the record in multiple instances to share that.

    As a 70 year old white guy, I saw Magic and Bird bring class and color blindness to the NBA. I was a full time musician in '81 and been colorblind for a long time. But like Bird, I can PLAY, so I got respect from black musicians and even just playing top40 dance clubs in the 70's and 80's, almost all our cover dance tunes were by black musical groups and we would pack the dance floor, fill the clubs, bring in the women which brings in the guys and f*ck em if they didn't like us attracting a "dark" crowd wherever we played. Money is green. The Isley Bros are black. I'm white. We can all party together. Bird and Magic are best friends and even Bird's mom would welcome Earvin to the table just like family. Just like my mom would have, God rest her soul. And me, too and my son and grandkids. So, it was 50 years ago. I know things are different in the NBA now, but it was not high class until Bird showed up and showed the other white guys how to be colorblind and it surprised and made most of the black players take notice cause the boy could PLAY. He spent HOURS shooting that ball. And any skill he lacked, he made up for by knowing where every player on both teams was at every second. Takes a lot of concentration, but he WILLED himself to do it.

    Right off the bat, you want to disregard what Larry’s opponents said! James Worthy AND Michael Cooper (and others) have said that Larry was more dangerous WITHOUT the ball. Cooper said that when MJ passed the ball he “hung on his shorts” but Larry was setting a pick, getting into position elsewhere, running interference, just *anything* he could do to be in the right place at the right time to help his team (that was from Kareem)
    MJ DIDNT DO THAT. He needed the ball. He wasn’t the playmaker Larry was. That’s just the truth. The more you listen to Larry’s opponents the more you hear these things over & over. THERES A *REASON* why all his opponents SAY these things!!!

    I am a lifelong Knicks fan, and had season tickets in the 1980's. I saw Bird play his entire career and saw him many times in Madison Square Garden. In my opinion he was the greatest player in the league from 1982-1988. His greatest statistical year was in the 1987-88 season. He averaged 30, 9+ rebounds, 6+ assists, 2 steals and a block. After that year he had double achilles surgery, and coupled with his debilitating back, he was never the same. However, I think his greatest year was in the 1985-86 season. He won league MVP, finals MVP, and was just toying with teams. Perhaps you can react to "Making The Case for the 1985-86 Celtics as The Greatest Team of All Time."

    When Larry Bird was drafted the Celtic team sucked. They had only won 24 games the year before Bird arrived. The first year Bird the Celtics won 62 games. The next year they won the championship. McCale won six man of the year coming off the bench. Bird led a mediocre team to the championship. Jordon needed a whole team around him before he could win championships. Pippin naming one. Until there were better players around Jordan he didn’t start winning championships. If they didn’t bring in the players we would be looking at Jordan and putting him in the same category as Iverson. Great scorer but didn’t win a championship.

    Bird has BETTER CAREER defensive stats (1.7 steals and .8 blocks per game) than:
    Lebron James, Kawhai Lenard, Kobe Bryant, Jimmy Butler. Bird also has a higher career defensive rating than ANY of these players as well and outside of King James, Larry Bird is higher on the career Defensive Winshares list (Lebron is number 10, Bird is number 33 all time, but Lebron has played 20 years to Birds 13 years)..
