Larry was 4th in MVP voting his rookie year, and he was rookie the year. he was second 3 years in a row then won 3 years in a row, only the third player. then he was second again. actually played 12 of 13 years and was All-star 12 years. twice Finala MVP. rookie of the year, coach of the year, and executive of the year. the only one to do that. year before Bird, Celtics won 29 games but Birds first year without any other additions, won 60 games. wait till you hear his competition says about him. enjoy the journey. check out his rookie year highlights, 85 86 season highlights, 5 times hurt and why everyone feared him.

Bird came to a 29 win team. He was the only addition as a rookie. He single handedly turned that team to a 61 win team that went to conference finals, as a sophomore, a championship. What did Lebron do in his first few yrs at Cleveland? Oh, that’s right, he had to form a super team to win. Then come back to a better Cleveland team, got more players be won there. Bird impacted the game like no other…period.

It’s my observation that the “athletic” players coast on their athleticism & don’t really value the IQ part of the game, and those players will always be replaceable. There will always be another athlete to come along to shine….
On the other hand, there are very few high IQ players, and among those, it is almost universally acknowledged, especially by the players who opposed him, that Larry Legend was the BEST. Playing chess while everyone else was playing checkers. Kareem said Larry’s brain was his best skill. James Worthy said he’d rather face Jordan than Bird, bcuz Bird made you look stupid. And on & on.

When I had season tickets to Knicks games in the 1980's, I saw Larry drop 23 points, 11 rebounds, and 9 assist... In the first half of the game! He sat out the rest of the game because the Celtics were up by thirty. If Bird was into padding his stats.... his box scores would been ridiculous in many games throughout his career.

    • @Gracie-SavedByGrace
      @Gracie-SavedByGrace 3 місяці тому +6

That's an important point! Especially for those who mainly rely on stats to decide who the best players are.
Bird never cared about stats. Another great example is when he sat out a fourth quarter after being told he was just one steal away from having a quadruple double. His team had a significant lead and he said, "I've done enough damage." All he cared about was the win.

I appreciate someone who recognizes Bird. IMO, there should be a few players in the conversation: LeBron, Bird, Jordan and Kareem. Honestly, you can not go wrong with any of those players! All of those players did prove that basketball is a team sport (Jordan, reluctantly so) and that playing one on one was not going to get the a TEAM championship. I would rank Jordan fourth and this is why:
Bird and LeBron are so similar in how they impact winning. They do it by shooting. They do it by getting assists. They do it by getting boards. Bird did his with better shooting, LeBron is better at drawing fouls. Bird was at GOD level for free throws and he was THE SUPERMAN, SUPERGOD of trash talking. LeBron can chase down and block from behind. LeBron has a better FG% than Bird. Bird is probably a more crafty player than LeBron.
Kareem had a shot that is unblockable and no one has mimicked it . . . EVER. Kareem's defense in the paint impacted winning.
Jordan did what? Made sure he took the most shots on the team, sometimes gave out assists, but interpreted his position, SHOOTING guard as meaning he is supposed to shoot!
I think Bird is probably a 100 in his skill set. I think LeBron is a 100 in his skill set.
I'd have to give the award though to LeBron. He has played 1492 games and Bird 897. I have to give some value to luck and being healthy and playing for TWENTY ONE years compared to Bird who not only had the achilles issues, but the back issues.
Now if I am a GM and I get to choose any of these on my team, I am happy that I am choosing from four of the best to ever play the game, I already won!
But there is one player, that is SERIOUSLY overlooked and I understand why: Shaq. Had Shaq been as serious about the game as say, Tim Duncan, Shaq would be the GOAT. Shaq chose to like food too much and was almost 400lbs when he retired. Shaq was unstoppable on offense. Shaq could dominate on defense. Let that man get serious and shot 80% from the line and he would be having parades in June every year.

The man who invented basketball, JAMES NAISMITH, was our 1st coach in Lawrence , Kansas..in 1895….the Jayhawks..envisioned as a true team sport, and Larry Bird was the absolute ultimate team player..the original Ten Rules of Basketball are there in Lawrence and Naismith is buried there (1939) with his wife..in Kansas we stress team play..and Bird was the best at getting everyone involved..not sure what he back to back to back MVP’s mean other than for 7 or 8 years he was either #1 or #2 in voting..and he does have that Coach of the Year in 1998..and Executive of the Year in 2012..

Michael Jordan and the Bulls had a 11-23 record against Larry Bird and the Celtics, including going 0-6 in playoff games against Bird. Bird was the founding member of the 50/40/90 club and is 1 of only 3 NBA players to have multiple 50/40/90 seasons and his were back to back, the other 2 are Steve Nash and Kevin Durant. Bird is also only 1 of 3 NBA players to have 3 consecutive NBA MVP Awards, the other 2 are Bill Russell and Wilt Chamberlin. Bird = GOAT

larry bird didnt stat pad. and yet he STILL is the ONLY player in HISTORY to average atleast 24 points, 10 REBOUNDS and 6 assists for an entire CAREER.. check it out, NOONE in NBA HISTORY has better numbers in all three of those stats yet.. mayb Jokic when he is done?
but then you realize that Larry ALSO shot 50/40/90 MULTIPLE times in his career (OnLY KD and Steve Nash have that type of shooting effeciency)
and then you realize he has BETTER defensive numbers than Lebron, Kobe, Jimmy Butler. averaged more STEALS and BLOCKS than those 3 proven defensive players for his career..
Larry Bird is the most all around player ever.. and i lean slightly toward him over JOrdan as the two best players ive ever seen.. then Magic and Kareem.. i guess Kobe and Lebron and Duncan and Olajuwan and Shaq would be next.

For those that do NOT know what the 50/40/90 Club is:
It requires a player to achieve the criteria of
      - 50% field goal percentage,
      - 40% three-point field goal percentage, and
      - 90% free throw percentage over the course of a regular SEASON, while meeting the minimum thresholds to qualify as a league leader in each category.
Larry Bird accomplished this twice in consecutive seasons (1986-87 & 1987-88)!! LeCLUNK has NEVER accomplished this in his 21 seasons as a player!

So Only Lost 1-Game The Whole Season At HOME. And They Have Some Others Year's To That Were Really High HOME Winning Season. NOTE: Larry's back is getting so bad by that game, if Len Bias hasn't died, he would have retired. Add to that double achilles surgery that, at that time, retired athletes.

Larry legend beat Jordan handily. 6-0 against him in the playoffs and 24-11 in the regular season. In order to be the best you have to beat the best. Larry did that, Jordan didn't. They'll make all types of excuses but the facts don't give a damn about your feelings!

He has a point. Jordan tried to guard Bird in the post. He was too short. McHale was a rookie with the Celtics, So was Pippen. The others you mentioned were trades.

Let me get this two guys who never even seen Bird play gonna have this useless discussion 😂 enjoy the players you get to see because nothing last forever and every era no matter how great in your mind, it improves each generation.

The videos are clearly on UA-cam to be watched and god have us free will to speak our mind so really the only useless discussion here is the one you started with your unnecessary comment.

combining both regular-season and postseason records, the Celtics' final record for the 1985-86 season was 82-18.

As much as I love Bird. Jordan is the GOAT. There's no discussion. Everyone who's voice is worth a damn agrees, Bird and Magic included. Air Jordan? His Highness? He is the originator of sports meme culture.
