I watched all those games in his prime and I really can't remember him missing any shots at the end of games. Players today hit some and miss some and people call them clutch. Bird didn't miss. The only miss I can sadly recall was the 3pt shot he took with only 1 second left against the Lakers in the '87 finals. With only 1 second left, Bird did everything right to get open and throw up a 3 on the run before the clock ran out. It looked for sure like it was going in to win the game, but just hit the back rim and came straight back out. Only time I can ever remember him missing a last second shot.

I dragged my roommate to the first basketball game of the year to see this new guy play his first college game named Larry Bird. In the first half he stole the ball and dribbled down the court like a guard. As he approached the basket with the other teams center ready to block his shot Larry went up like he was going to dunk. Instead he no-look passed the ball over his shoulder to Harry Morgan the other forward. Harry dunked the ball on a very confused big guy and the legend started. I got to see him play for the next two years for free on a student pass; he is still the best overall player I've ever seen

Which by the way is what converted me into liking Bird, because I didn't. Was Gary Payton or kg a loudmouth? Bird was talking shit on that level. Telling everyone no one can gaurd him or stop him. Telling everyone in the Arena what the Celtics play was going to be. Then where and how he was going to shoot his shot and make it. That isn't show boating? Or yelling at the opponents coach asking if he has anyone who can gaurd him? Hell walking into the locker room and asking who is coming in 2nd for the 3pt shoot out cause he is taking 1st. If none of this is being a loudmouth or showboating please give me an example of being a loudmouth or showboating as a NBA player. I remember hearing about a Utah Jazz game, later on during the "Stockton to Malone" years. Stockton had all the points and Malone had all the assists that game. During the press conference, they told the press not to expect to see it again. It was fun to swap roles, but they know what roles they are being paid to play. With no disrespect meant to Bird, what individual players are capable of and what they do are not always the same. The "Making the Case" video for Wilt Chamberlain offers some good examples of that as well.

In addition to the ones mentioned, also players like Karl Malone, John Stockton, Charles Barkley, Patrick Ewing and many other really good players who are not in the hall of fame but could be. It was a different game for sure than it is now but seems like the overall sense of competitive spirit even in the regular season was so much more than it is today, possible correlation with the ridiculous amount of money some of these players are making and they dont have the same sense of appreciation for the game.

I thought you were going to mention that he broke his hand in the '85 playoffs. That likely caused them the title. He had been shooting 3s over 40% in '84 and '86 playoffs, but only shot 25% from 3 in '85 playoffs because of the hand. It's his own fault though for getting into a barroom fight during the playoffs. He had no outside shot during that finals. If they win that year then Bird and Magic would have both ended with 4 titles apiece.

Here is something most people don’t know about Larry Legend. He played his whole NBA career with a hand injury. His index finger on his shooting hand is shaped much like a boomerang, permanently bent toward his thumb at a 45-degree angle. Two operations have failed to straighten it and he can bend it only halfway to his palm. You can see this finger clearly at 22:30. Back at Indiana State University, the forward had boasted remarkable percentages of .533 from the field and .826 from the line. He never had the same feel for the ball as he did in college after the injury to his finger.

1987-1989 only played 6 games with double achillies tendon surgery, and broke his back, In addition to a bad elbow, shattered knuckles on his dominate hand and half a dozen injuries that aren't as well known, "Larry body betrayed him" is what is repeated, what isn't as well known is just how busted up Larry was. Most of Larry's rivals knew he had some injuries, but they had no idea HOW BADLY until they shared a locker room on the Dream Team, they are all, "Damn" and every one of those players have Larry in their personal top 5, That says a awful lot.
LARRY LEGEND TIMELINE to look at the career of NBA’s greatest small forward:
1974 - Larry played high school basketball at Valley High School in French Lick, Indiana.
1975 - Enrolls at Indiana University to play for coach Bobby Knight but quits school after a few weeks and works as a garbage man.
1976 - Enrolls at Indiana State, sitting out the season as a transfer student.
1978 - ISU goes 23-9 and Bird named to All-America first team. Selected 6th overall by the Boston Celtics.
1979 - Bird wins AP player of the year, first-team All-America and led his team to NCAA Championship game.
1980 - Bird named NBA rookie of the year.
1981 - The Celtics wins the NBA championship.
1982 - The Celtics improves his record 63-19, lost Philly in East Finals.
1984 - Bird is MVP and the Finals MVP
1985 - Bird is the MVP again despite nagging elbow injury, leads his team to the NBA Finals.
1986 - Bird is the MVP again, three years in a row, Finals MVP and ’86 Celtics are the arguably the best team ever.
1987 - Celtics advanced to the Finals again but injuries set a blockade to win over Lakers.
1988 - Celtics fails to advance to the finals, losing Pistons in a 6 game series.
1989 & 1990 - Bird plays the first 6 games before deciding to undergo surgery to remove bone spurs in both heels.
1991 - Celtics ended season 56-23 and injured Bird shows some of the flashes of vintage himself.
1992 - Bird misses 37 games, most of them are the second half of the season, play for the Dream Team in the 1992 Barcelona Summer Olympics and retires from the game of basketball. Yes this is repost to a earlier comment on another video, but it shows why I have Larry Bird as my #1, is stats are consistently superior across his whole career, in spite of multiple injuries that should have ended his career, and yet the played on. Most of Larry's rivals knew he was injured, but none knew how badly until they shared a locker room on the dream team, everyone of those hall of fame players on the dream team ALL have Larry Bird in their personal top 5. When you consider completion, and the injuries that he literal played handicapped, Then the fact that Larry informed his opponent what was going to happen, then did it and they could not stop it. There is no doubt. Why he is the legend. With Larry, most people don't realize how good he was because STAT PADDING and ACCOLADES were beneath him. Take a look at his games against the rockets, the 60pt game, but the 1988 playoff game is really the one that tells you what kind of player Larry was, because his stats aren't that impressive until you know that 20 of those points came in the last quarter of the game, and he was on the court with TWO Ruptured Achilles Tendons that had him benched the following season AND Bronchial Pneumonia, that sent him to the hospital.

Jordan is just a better all-around player than Big O who benefited from playing in the fastest pace. That's why his all-around game looks so impressive and Russell Westbrook outed how broken that line of thinking can be.

Wilt did. Just look up the rules changes they made to prevent his utter dominance. They made dunking free throws illegal, because that was how he did them before entering the league. They widened the lane and the paint and limited the time allowed in the paint, to prevent him from blocking everything. They also didn't track blocks and steals until the year immediately after Wilt left the league, as they didn't want him to dominate those statistics as well.
And Wilt's rivalry with Bill Russell was everything Bird's rivalry with Magic was, and more. Bird and Magic may have saved a league in decline after the 70s, but that league was built up by Bill and Wilt in the first place.

Gretzky was Michael Jordan, Larry Bird & Magic Johnson all rolled into one & Gretzky is the G.O.A.T. of the NHL hands down. Lemieux never had a 200 point season. Gretzky had four 200 point seasons & three consecutive 200 point seasons between 1983-84 through 1985-86.
Gretzky has so many NHL records. There are too many to list. He also won the Hart Trophy (NHL MVP) 9 times & wont the trophy 8 seasons in a row between 1980-87 then won it again in 1989. Lemieux won the Hart Trophy 3 times.
Gretzky's career high in goals is 92 & Lemieux's is 85. Gretzky's career high in assists is 163 & Lemieux's is 114. Gretzky had 100 or more assists in a season 11 (consecutive) times. Lemieux had 100 or more assists in a season once. Gretzky also averaged more points per game than Lemieux & if Gretzky was never traded from Edmonton, the Oilers would likely have had more championships & Gretzky likely would have scored more points on that talented roster.
Gretzky's jersey number 99 is also retired league-wide by NHL & the accomplishments go on & on & on...

Bird and Magic did two things that Michael Johnson couldn't: They were superb passers and playmakers. They could control the pace of the game with their passing. While Magic was blessed with superb teammates, Bird did one thing more - he made his teammates better players. It makes a difference when your star player is constantly passing to his team. You might want to do a reaction to Bird's passing highlights: ua-cam.com/video/Am56lEY2kVQ/v-deo.html . And after that, there's The Steal, ua-cam.com/video/LYKdI_Xm9es/v-deo.html , one of the best plays by anyone that you'll ever see.

Michael Johnson is a gold medal sprinter.
Michael Jordan was an underrated passer. He averages like the 5th most assists for his career at the position despite playing in the triangle offense for half his career which decentralized ball control to stack assists. He also had a stretch as point guard where he had 10+ assists in 10 of 11 games.
What Bird and Magic had that Jordan didn't was not play making....you can argue rebounding and in magic's case probably the BEST playmaking.

I put Wilt Chamberlain as the greatest of all time. Nobody could score as well as he could. He was also probably the best rebounder and blocker of shots, and he is the only center in NBA history to ever lead the league in assists. o

Certainly a dominant freak. The main issue he has is why didn't he win more championships? I did not see that era so I don't know if it has anything to do with him or not. I know the Celtics had the best team at the time. But if Wilt had trouble in big moments then that should be held against him as the greatest of all time. A player has to do it in the most important moments to be the best.

@@stickman1742 Basketball is a team sport. Wilt has the league playoff record of 41 rebounds against the Celtics (regular season the record is 55, which is also Wilt against the Celtics) and in general performed incredibly against them in the playoffs - for instance, in the last three games of their 62 playoff series, he was 24 out of 28 on free throws, for an 85.7% FT%. Compare that to his career 51.1%, for an idea of Wilt's actual clutch gene.
He stepped up, but unfortunately, most of his teams stepped down - or were forced down, as the Celtics' strategy for Wilt's teams was to target his teammates rather than the Big Dipper himself, as it was easier to prevent the ball from getting to him than stopping him from scoring.
Wilt dominated Russell, but the Celtics beat Wilt's teams, except for in '67, the lone blemish on the Celtics' otherwise perfect 60s record, and Bill's only playoffs loss after his sophomore season.

You guys need to look up Pistol Pete Maravich making the case. He was before all these guys and before the 3 point shot was added to the game. He was without a doubt the best ball handler. All these guys modeled their playing after Pete.

THANK YOU for bringing that up about Mario Lemieux. Also, Gretzky had four? five? other players who are in the hall of fame playing with him. Mario spent the first few years with guys you can't name. As a matter of fact, I think one of them delivered me a pizza I called in for last week.

I'm not going to argue against Mario's status as possibly being the GOAT. But Mario did have some talent playing with him...don't forget. Jaromir Jagr, Kevin Stevens, Mark Recchi, John Cullen and Ron Francis were all pretty great players in their own rights.

LARRY Bird is the GOAT Small Forward... Even Michael Jordan says it... Jordan became Michael playing against Larry... Some of his best playoff games were against Bird and the Celtics, but his team still lost the games... Jordan got swept twice in the playoffs against the Celtics while Bird was playing, and had a losing regular season record during the Bird years... Jordan claims Larry taught him how to trash talk and get inside people's heads... There are several videos out there where they have players give their top 5... From Wilt Chamberlain and Bill Russell to Labron... Most put them in position number order... Larry is usually always at the 3 position, which is a forward position... So I just consider him top 3 and the GOAT Small Forward per Michael Jordan... Also, Larry was the "white" basketball star in a predominately black sport back then and that got the NBA going as much or more than the Magic Rivalry...
