@@screwdriverman5-kf2ui Let me correct you there. "He is not a freak athlete" because he was plenty athletic, just not freaky kind. It seems to me that these days athletic equals freak athleticism which is not the case.
He's not in the debate because he didn't have flashy handles or dunks. The league nowadays is all about dribbling and dunking. Larry did everything else better than anyone.
He's not in the debate because he's white. That's the biggest reason people don't put him in the conversation.

*Dribbling JUST to dribble isn't a plus. It can be a fun flare for fans, but, in reality, ball handling is the real discussion. And Bird had those fundamentals MASTERED.
*Dunks he did. SLAMMING the dunk, no. But, either one, a layup or a 15-footer all count the same.

I'm a lifelong native Tar Heel fan of well over six decades, though I've lived in Colorado for 25+ years now. I I have Michael at 1a, Larry at 1b. Starting first all-time team? Jordan, Bird, Magic, Duncan, and Kareem.
I saw Jokic live a few weeks back and walked out SMH. He was stunning. I may have to have to rethink that goat debate in a few years. 😳

In Bird's rookie season, he single-handily took a 29-win Boston team to 61 wins and the playoffs. Larry's stats were so dominant that he beat Magic Johnson for the Rookie of the Year Award by 63 votes to 3, even though the Lakers had just won the National Championship. The next season, Bird's 2nd year, the Celtics won the National Championship. This was 4 and 5 years before the famous '80s Celtic line-up was brought together.

Magic scored 20 a game, 11 assists a game and 8 rebounds a game and shot 53% from the field with 2 steals a game for his career averages..

LeBron is a cry baby, and jumps from team to team to try to find a team that he can win with. Larry took a losing team and turned it into a champion winning team. If Larry Bird had taken the shots he fed McHale and Parrish, his stats would have been unmatched, but he got the team involved.
Larry himself said that early on, Jordan "didn't have a team." But the Celtics with an injured Larry (broken back, double Achilles, bone spurs...) still beat the Bulls. It was magic (pun intended) to see MJ, Larry, and Earvin play together in 1992.

Bird is the word! Those of us who were alive then and actually watched know who the TRUE greatest of all time player is. Bird would have had 4 NBA titles (and 3 in a row!) if he hadn’t broken his finger on his shooting hand in a bar fight in Philly in 1985. It was noticeably swollen. The Celtics still dispatched the 76ers, but Bird missed some shots he normally would have made during the ‘85 Finals against the Lakers. Larry was pissed!! So, next year? The Celtics won it all. And their record at home that year was 40-1, or 50-1 if you include the playoffs. No other team before or since has matched that home court record.

Wow.. MJ might have been a non factor in the 80's.. but let's talk 90's.. MJ was unstoppable in the 90's from what I remember. And I'm a football fan. lol.. don't know much about basketball except for the videos I've been watching. But every player that played against Bird gives him respect and kudos.. and hated playing against him because he was that good.

I just think Bird was a better all around player... he was a team player.. not saying MJ wasn't but MJ had to have the ball to make stuff happen..Larry played a different kind of game.. He wasn't playing checkers, he played chess on the court, and the slow, chubby, white dude made it happen. My Daddy hated Bird.. he was a Sixers fan, but even Dr. J and Moses give Larry credit.

Thomas lost friends and his place on the '92 Dream Team because of the way he played with the Pistons, backstabbed "friends," and especially because of the rumors he spread about Magic, one of his supposed "best friends," after Earvin's HIV diagnosis. He publicly torched Larry, saying he agreed with Rodman's comment that Larry would be considered an average player if he were black. Bird could care less what either said about him. But he cared very much that it caused a distraction during the playoffs and that Thomas spread lies about his friend, Magic. It's all spelled out in Bird's and Johnson's book, "When the Game Was Ours," and in the following documentary, "Courtship of Rivals." Nobody, including the coach, wanted Isiah on that '92 team. It wasn't just Jordan.

When someone like him pushes Robert Parrish to throw punches, you really know he's dirty. He made Laetnerr, Grayson Allen, and other dirty players look like choir boys. I remember seeing him target Larry's broken back more than once.

Larry is not top three players of all time. But bird and Jordan are the top two best basketball players I’ve ever seen. Lebron third and maybe Kobe next, but magic played the game at a different level than lebron or Kobe. So it’s Jordan, Russell, Kareem, Magic, Lebron, Bird, Wilt…that’s the list. I would put Dream’s peak as being the highest I’ve seen since magic, bird, Jordan.

Sweetie.. every sport is too friendly now... I love when they are friends after the game.. but during the competition.. compete.. every sport to me now is soft.. I grew up in the 80's.. and my hubby grew up in the 70's.. Sports today just not the same. If you look at someone cross eyed you're getting fouled.. it's a joke. I'm, personally, disappointed in team sports today. I grew up loving Nascar.. they're not allowed to race anymore either the way they did 25/30 yrs ago.

Id even argue he is the no1, depending on what metric you jfollow.
individually, Jordan is no1, there is no doubt in my mind.
But like many testemonies in this very video tells you, as a _team player_ Larry was better, "more dangerous", than Jordan.
And it IS a team game.
In a one v one skill match up, my money would be on Jordan.
But if I built a team from scratch and had first pick, Id take Larry Legend 8 days a week.
While Jordan might be better in a one for one comparison, I think Larry was the more valuable player.

Larry broke his back in 85.
He hurt it *_again_* in 88.
He played 7 years with that back, won his third MVP with that back and took a championship... with that back.

MJ had few weaknesses if any (average 3 point shooter) and was dominant on both ends and played hard..
Lebron is not that great a shooter, takes defensive plays off, games off, and air balls free throws and seems to throw his teamates under the bus instead of lead ...
Kobe shot 43% from the floor. thats terrible.
Bird had few weaknesses if any (average athlete) and has BETTER overall stats than BOTH Lebron and Kobe INCLUDING better DEFENSIVE numbers..
Magic ALSO has better over all stats than both Leborn and Kobe. BOTH Bird AND Magic were DOUBLE DOUBLE guys and almost triple double averages for their careers.
1-Jordan. 2 kareem. 3 Wilt. 4 Bird. 5 magic. Thats the list. Your list sucks guy. Lebron and kobe are borderline top 10 (thats anywhere from 8-12)
