It's difficult to appreciate just how talented Prince was. He wrote all of his own music and lyrics, produced the songs himself, had a great voice, could play numerous instruments (including drums) to a very high level and was a great dancer. Back in the day, people used to compare Prince to Michael Jackson. In my opinion, Prince was much more talented than Jackson in a number of different areas.
And while MJ is well known for his dancing, to me Prince's dancing is just insanely good and compete with MJ any day. There's a video of recently found rehearsal over Prince's version of Nothing Compares to U...his dancing in those rehearsals blows MJ out of the water.
Just before this performance, Rolling Stone did an all time top 100 list of guitarists. Prince was snubbed on that list and wanted to prove them wrong. Many people believe he did
When I saw it live I was aware he'd been snubbed. Think about the logic of that there are 100 better guitarists than Prince. I truly believe that he was such a student he'd have been happy with 80th! because he does everything else. The Rock establishment was in the audience that night so he let it be known and put em on blast,, and now? We're not even talking about 80th which sheds a light on how they've been treating Prince for 40 years. I remember growing up and my heavy metal buddies teasing me & saying he was a guitar lightweight. But, as we got older and Prince's shows became more guitar driven those same buddies one by one have hit me up and said "dude you were right". My answer was always, " I know I was right and I wasn't even listening to you back then". We should be absolutely frightened by how the media can choose a narrative, shape perception and opinion about way more serious things than who can play guitar...but we aren't.
@@metalore Recently 33rd. But they're were still guys ahead of him that can't touch him. Prince was too versatile, he played all genre's while other guitarists are locked in to theirs.
The best thing about this performance is that, as badass as Prince is, he still recognized that this was a group performance. You can see him checking with Tom Petty to ‘clear’ that he should keep going.
I did notice that. And he's right, this wasn't planned. Prince was always late for rehearsals. But Tom knew magic was happening that night. So he encouraged Prince to keep playing.
There were some SERIOUS heavy hitters on that stage and Prince stole the show. The number of times he changes up his style in that one song is epic! But then, that's Prince! RIP Tom Petty and Prince.
Yes, legends on stage, including Steve Winwood. Tom Petty totally supported Prince going off like that, you can see Prince continue to check in with Tom to see if he should stop, but Tom keeps telling him to go on. Same here! The performance is absolutely next level but the pure joy and adoration on the son's face throughout is by far my favorite part of the video 💜
"While My Guitar Gently Weeps" is one of Georges signatures songs as a member of the Beatles. At the beginning of the video, when Tom Petty starts singing, there is a young man with really dark hair playing the guitar that you can see over Tom Petty's shoulder. That is Dhani Harrison, George Harrison's son. Dhani has an amazing resemblance to a young George. This tribute was performed in 2002, a year after George Harrison died of throat cancer. Very sad, but very inspiring at the same time. George affect countless musicians and people alike all over the world. IF PRINCE WANTED TO PLAY A TRIBUTE TO GEORGE... you know he was a big deal! It was George who single handedly invented the "concert for a cause". Long before Live Aid, and "we are the world" in the 80's, George started the whole thing in 1971 in Maddison Square Garden, New York City, with "A Concert for Bangladesh" a humanitarian tragedy caused by war, floods, and a massive cyclone all within the same year.
Prince had never heard this song before, but he was so moved by what he was hearing that he just decided to crash the gig and play with these guys, and he blew everybody away. Huge respect.
You were right! The solo at the end from Prince wasnt planned to go that way. As a matter of fact, Prince didnt even rehearse with the rest of the guys, he told them not to worry and showed up THAT DAY and pulled that crazy solo off. The man was a genius, in more ways than one, and everything just came easy to him. Like he wasnt human or something. Anyway, love your guys reactions. Keep thme Prince ones coming!
Probably the greatest single guitar performance ever put on film. Story behind it is even crazier, look into it, was issues at the rehearsal and Prince basically said dont worry I got this without ever rehearsing anything with the group and just laid this shit down on the spot without the group even knowing what he was gonna do. Just shows how insanely underrated Prince was, top 10 guitarist all time period.
Prince was a killer guitar player. There’s an MTV Unplugged with Prince all acoustic that shows a totally different side of him and how good he really was on stripped down guitar.
When they interviewed the other members of the jam, they said he showed up and "played along" and then HE admitted that he went half-burn at rehearsal and full burn at the show. Which is exactly what happened... The smiles on y'all faces - the whole time! Peace.
“Legend” has it that Prince’s guitar is still floating out in the ether after he tossed it at the end of this performance.. and the rock gods retrieved it, and gave it back to Prince after he passed away and “left this space”-and they asked him to play it for them…RIP Prince.
The lady in the video makes not one ounce of emotion until Prince plays, that right there shows you the brilliance of Prince, He was just on another level.
Here's why I believe Prince went so hard in that performance. A month earlier Rolling Stone Magazine put out a list of the 100 greatest guitarists of all time and guess who's name wasn't on the list? You guessed it Prince, so I think he did this performance to show Rolling Stone Magazine not only should've been on that list but I could've been on that list.

There's a reason why the best guitarists, Eric clapton, Steve Vai, Gary Clark Jr., just to name a few, all worship Prince's guitar playing. Prince was great at playing with harmonics, and knew when to shred & when not to. It's not always about how fast you can play or how slow, but the feeling and soul behind your playing. Case & point 5:39 - 5:49 his guitar literally sounds like it weeps, his tone is perfect, & he's making his guitar sing, giving us blues licks but then 6:42 he completely goes Metal on us, showing the crowd , he can do that too. Prince is def in my top 5 favorite Guitarists. He is the Jimi Hendrix of our generation
Home girl had her game/poker face on the entire video and about 5 seconds into prince solo a beautiful grin and smile came over her face and didn't leave for the remainder of the song. She got it! If fuck around and find out was a person: he'd be it
Prince was the best of all time. He did it ALL. To hear him is amazing, but once you saw him he was mesmerizing. Played over 20 instruments, danced, choreographed and orchestrated to perfection. Dig in, kids! ✌🏼
The styler I read about this performance is in line with your thoughts. The night before Petty asked Prince to play with the rest on this song. He agreed and went to rehearsal. It didn't go right as Prince was told by Petty that he could do the second solo. The other soloist didn't yeild to Prince so when rehearsal was done Petty said that they will extend the song where Prince can do his own style of solo. The best part of this whole thing is that they didn't rehearse again to go through Prince's solo. What Prince played was on on the fly. He was a true musicianal genius!

Your love for guitar is truly evident in this song. You had me laughing looking at your ear to ear grin your bright and shining face and eyes and the pure love of what you were listening to. This is exactly the reason why I started this journey watching reactions of the younger generation to the greatest music of soul. From the roaring 20s to the 1990s music still had soul.
I believe at 6:31 after Prince went backwards off the stage, he stopped playing because that was the end of his solo but Tom Petty gave him the nod to keep going. Legendary.
As far as Prince showboating or trying to steal the show, I think that Prince was just feeling it. I never got the idea that it was cringey or awkward. It lifted the song up and made it heavenly. And isnt that what the best honor could be for George's memory? To do your very best and make George's song even more memorable in his honor. I think it was great.

wow man in these few minutes you showed me the essence of music and not just music. bravo✌👍👍
Prince, DAMN!
Prince could shred a guitar. 🎸
I believe at 6:31 after Prince went backwards off the stage, he stopped playing because that was the end of his solo but Tom Petty gave him the nod to keep going. Legendary.
Some great talent on that stage!!!!!!!
