Tom Petty was a genius in his own right. He knew Prince was one of the greatest guitarists of our generation. I'm grateful to Tom for giving him the respect that Prince deserved. Prince's music to me will never be replicated. Once in a lifetime artist. Tom Petty gave him his due from his exclusion on the Top 100 guitarists of all time. Such love. He bowed before Petty and the look they shared made me cry when I saw it the first time. He wasn't originally invited to perform with them. Prince was a huge fan of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and said Tom’s the only real authentic rocker he’s known…Prince glances over during his solo and “asks permission “ to keep the solo going…he said he didn’t wanna be up there making it all about him and not George Harrison
Steve Winwood had a lengthy career. English, Winwood joined the Blues Rock band The Spencer Davis Group, and sang lead at age 14. Their biggest hit was probably the song Gimme Me Some Lovin (later covered by The Blues Brothers). Moved on to front the band Traffic, played guitar on Hendrix album, formed Blind Faith (with Eric Clapton and Ginger Baker). Then he turned 20....
Winwoods start is incredible. Like you say, playing with legends, forming legendary bands... All before he was 20. I was lucky enough to see him open up for The Dead (Grateful Dead after Jerry died) in the early 2000s. Just the one set,but he put on a Hell of a show. Then he came out and played a couple songs with the Dead. So I heard Dear Mr. Fantasy twice that night.
The fact that Prince’s entire solo was 100% improvised and not practiced beforehand still baffles me. Unreal talent and ability. God I wish he was still here making music…
This performance by Prince was his big F.U. to Rolling Stone, condoned and assisted by the other musicians on the stage. They invited him there for this purpose because they knew how great he was.
I’m a 72 yr old white female and the best concert I ever attended was Prince. He could rock a pantsuit and heels better than anyone. And then he did a whole unplugged thing that really showed his talent. Legend
My mom was a Prince fan big time! Prince was in tour long story she had two tickets, but Dad had passed away so of course she did not go. I call up my son that evening said got 2 tickets for Prince. My Son called me on a break. Said Mom, Prince is Crazy Amazing Talented!
This performance is legendary! Rolling Stone had put out a list of 100 greatest guitarist and made the unimaginable mistake of not including Prince! Tom Petty invited him to be part of this tribute and Prince was in the background until it was his time to shine. But, in the end, the whole world knew that he was a legend
The thing people don't understand is that Prince was not saying "I was amazing, no one could have done better than me!" when he dropped his guitar and walked away. He was saying "That's how a band full of legends plays a legendary song!".
That's what's so insane about the Travelling Willburys. As amazing as Lynne is, he was the lightweight of the group. How many groups in history can accurately say that a musician/songwriter of Lynnes caliber is the FIFTH biggest name in the band? Similar to how Kris Kristofferson, absolute LEGEND, is the forth biggest name in the Highwaymen.
Jeff Lynne, Steve Winwood, Tom Petty, George Harrison and Roy Orbison were the Traveling Willburrys. A super group. So appropriate for them to be in this. Prince has the confidence, but if you look at him smiling at the others on stage, he's very honored to be in this tribute to George Harrison.
They always miss this. I don't understand how. They never understand the " one up" was to rolling stone, not the other guys minus one who kept trying to steal his solo so instead of allowing conflict to override, he skipped rehearsals.
George Harrison is a legend. For Prince and everyone else in this video to play tribute with this song, you have to hold a high place in people's hearts.
I always find it funny when some people will say George wasn't a great guitarist or musician. Because, like you said, look at the level of the players who come out and pay tribute. Look who played with him. If legends like Prince, Dylan, Clapton, Lennon and McCartney are either guys you played with or who praise your playing, you're probably pretty damn good.
Prince was left off of the Rolling Stone's top guitarists list. The showrunner invited Prince to play since he was being inducted that same night. During the rehersal, the man to the far left who plays the first two solos in the performance (Mark Mann of ELO) wouldn't let Prince step in and play. He played the solos just like Eric Clapton had originally played them. Needless to say, the showrunner was ticked. Prince told him not to worry and just strummed along. He told the showrunner that Mann could have the first two solos and he would take the third. Nobody knew what Prince would do because it was never rehearsed. This is the result. Look at Dhani (behind Tom with the acoustic) and Tom as he plays. They totally forget Mark Mann is even there....BTW, the guy playing keys is Steve Winwood.
Black Pegasus’ face when Krizz starts talking about Prince being over on the side of the stage and knowing he was about to step into the light and blow everyone away. 😂
Via his roadie who handed it to Oprah Winfrey in the front row ... which is less heartfelt but did happen. Wish there was footage showing Oprah's face ... I'm guessing it was beyond WTF! 😂
Prince was inducted into the hall of fame at the same time as George Harrison. That's why Prince is in attendance. Prince never showed up for rehearsals for this song so his guitar playing suprised everyone. Love their reaction to Prince's solo.
Prince stole this show. It was this performance that gained my respect for Prince, i never knew he could PLAY like that, easily a top 10 best guitarist ever. And Tom Petty used his songs to tell stories in a very southern folk rock kinda way and its the folk part where he didn't require the vocals you hear a lot of people use, even without that the man was very talented and one of my top personal favorites.
Mr. Petty was being true the George Harrison version of this song. If you listen to the Harrison version you can see that Petty and Mr. Lynne were true true to the Harrison version with own natural vocal styles. Prince rocked. I wish he had featured more guitar work in his music. Keep up the good job. Still waiting to see you listen to Traffic/Steve Winwood, Low Spark of High Heeled Boys!
I’ve heard differently, but you may be correct. Story I’ve read online before is he was there & *everyone* in the room was completely shocked when (my apologies for not remembering his name) the guy on guitar in vid did the solos bc, well, Prince was right there & he’s a badass. But supposedly he said “No, he’s doing a killer job, let him take those & I’ll come in on the back end…” or something along those lines.
this showcased Prince's guitar chops. The guy was enormously talented playing many instruments, composing and performing. He was not considered in the upper echelon of guitar players but was excellent. He was joined by a few hall of famers for this performance and it showed.
Why, because a lame magazine like Rolling Stone didn't put him on some list? "Underrated" is the most overused and misued word in the English language. The vast majority of people who know anything at all about the guitar, and who listen to guitar-based music know Prince was very talented and could shred. There are articles pushing that view everywhere. No artist who's ever been interviewed about Prince doesn't rank him highly. You can't go to any comment section on any video that references Prince without people talking about how good he was. Prince is not "underrated." Somewhat underappreciated, perhaps, but not underrated.
@@MarkMay-cr6bv Go ask a hundred non guitarist to list their top guitar players and you'll get the usual Hendrix, Clapton, Paige, Gilmour maybe SRV, you know the usual suspects but very few will mention Prince. Different story if you ask best performer/singer/songwriter though as that's what people know him as.
Look for the interviews with Tom and the guys about this. Said they had no odea he was gonna go off like that but they all caught on quick that something magical was happening
this was one of the best performances ever and to have all those legends on stage would have been amazing to witness live. glad you got to finally check this out kali
Jeff Lynne helped George Harrison with his album and did a lot of production. He was also in the Traveling Wilbur's with Tom P. ,Roy O., Bob D. and George H..
OMG is right! I said a few more colorful words when I first witnessed eased this! What an amazing performance. Prince crushed this in only a style and flair he has. Rip to these legends
quick facts for ya'll the song was on the Beatles white album and the original guitar solo on the Beatles song that Prince does was done on the original album by an uncredited Eric Clapton
Tom Petty is front and center singing the verses, Jeff Lynne is sunglasses singing the pre chorus, Steve Winwood is playing the organ, Dhani Harrison is the young dude strumming the acoustic next to Prince (he is the son of George Harrison), and Prince is the the colorful dude who gets the end solo. This was recorded at the Rock N Roll Hall Of Fame. Each year a handful of acts are inducted into the Rock N Roll Hall Of Fame and a little speech is given about each inductee and it is customary for the inductee to perform (if they are not able then somebody of high caliber is tapped to perform their music in their place). This particular year, George Harrison was being inducted for a solo career outside the Beatles, but he had recently passed away. After the Beatles, George Harrison had an epic solo career, and then he started a super group called The Traveling Wilburys which Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne were a part of. They were here to perform George Harrison's most known song in his place, along with George's son Dhanni who is also a musician. Prince was being inducted that night and Steve Winwood was being inducted that night as a part of the group Traffic, so they decided to join in. Originally this song was recorded by the Beatles and guitar legend Eric Clapton recorded the guitar solo. Rolling Stone had recently published a list of best guitar players and either left Prince off the list or placed him very low on the list and Prince wanted to showcase his talent. Prince showed up late for the soundcheck/dress rehearsal so another guitar player filled in. Prince saw that guitar player was nailing it and was having fun so Prince said "let him do the solo and I will add something on the end..."
Ohhh I’m coming for you alright! Everyone on that stage is a freaking legend so Prince is performing with same level musicians. There’s no egos here just the joy of playing together. Prince stood back and gave everyone space to do their thing and then he played the solo like he wrote it.
You don't get to be this level without ego. Lots and lots of ego. It's also that they are professionals and stayed in their lanes backing him up at the end there.
Hi Krizz and BP! Rolling Stone Magazine, who published a list of the greatest rock n roll guitarists of all time and left Prince off that list, also owns The Rock n Roll Hall of Fame. This was the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame tribute to George Harrison. Prince performed with his friend Tom Petty on this to flip a big fat middle finger to Rolling Stone and did a fab job of saying f u. I've worked in rock n roll my whole life and I believe Prince and Joe Walsh are the greatest guitarists ever.
The first time it ever made it to album yes. It was performed many times before though.

Prince and Stevie Ray Vaughn had one thing in common, they didn’t just play their guitars, they made love to them. I was weeping the first time I saw this amazing performance. The term “genius” is overused but Prince played 24 instruments. He was a genius.
Steve Winwood is on organ and he was also inducted into the Hall of Fame that evening! Prince was inducted as well and performed “Let’s Go Crazy” earlier in the show! This was George’s posthumous solo induction. Jeff Lynn was there for a reunion of sorts of the remaining living members of The Traveling Wilburys in tribute of George! Others have explained Prince’s joining for the guitar solo! Rolling Stone makes some very obvious slights at times on the list! Never get tired of this performance I can hardly believe it’s been 20 years ❤️🔥✌🏻🫶🏻
Billy Preston on keyboards. He did a ton of studio work with the Beatles. Edited to add - Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne were very close friends with George Harrison. You may enjoy the work they did as a "supergroup: called The Traveling Wilburys. Or maybe not, but what I love, is all those inredibly successful and talented guys getting together for the sheer joy of the music.
The early guitar solos were originally done by Eric Clapton. They had Marc Mann set for this show, then Petty invited Prince. In rehearsal Mann was doing this good version of Clapton and Prince said to let him do his thing and Prince would come in later.
Steve Winwood on the keyboards is probably the most talented musician on this stage. Just watch his “Dear Mr Fantasy” live at Crossroads 2008 Or check out his early teen work with The Spencer Davi’s Group” like “Gimme some lovin” or “I’m a man” Steve is an insane talent.
I’m sure someone already said this, but when Eric Clapton was asked what it was like to be the best guitarist in the world, he said he didn’t know: “you need to ask Prince.”
NOBODY was better than Tom Petty…his catalogue of hit after hit after hit, and the ones the weren’t hits are even better…the dude was putting out masterpiece album after masterpiece album until 2016, then passed in 2017
Dhani Harrison is standing next to Tom Petty. BTW,everyone on stage saw the guitar go up in the air but no one saw it come back down. This performance was the night Prince was inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame. He was asked only that day to do the performance with Petty/others for the tribute to George Harrison. He was given the ending solo and told by Petty to just burn it up...and he did!
Every time I watch it, and I never get tired of it, I always wonder, "Where the hell did that guitar go?" There are certain people you will always remember what you were doing when you heard they passed. Prince was one of those for me. Tom Petty, too. Mainly because I had just seen Tom in concert a few weeks prior to his passing. The first time I saw Tom was in Oakland in the late 70's. Prince lived in Oakland at that time. I would not doubt he attended some Bill Graham produced concerts.
A middle finger in a red hat showing Rolling Stone where they went wrong. But what I absolutely love is that he kept checking back with the rest of the guys, so he was doing what he was doing WITHIN the frame of the occasion. I miss that man.
The Cat who took the Lead in the beginning of the video is Jimmy Vaughn.. Stevie Rays older Brother from The Fabulous Thunderbird's.. The Original Version, The Beatles had Eric Clapton on Lead.
Jeff Lynne- Songwriter and lead singer and musical arranger of ELO and part of Traveling Wilburys. He also collaborated with the Beatles and co-produced with Tom Petty, co-wrote and co-produced a Beach Boys song and other things.
I have to say I am blessed. I got to see Tom Petty on his last tour. Two shows before he passed RIP. I don't know of another man who could convince Joe Walsh of the Eagles to open for him. Joe's act was to the level of the closing act and yet Tom kicked it up. It's no wonder that he got Prince to play with him. I'm glad I could see him live.
I grew up in that era- 60s, 70s, 80s- listening to all of these artists and attending their concerts. I'm still learning things about groups/ artists that I never knew back in the day.
For more Steve Winwood, try some Blind Faith or Traffic. 'Dear Mr Fantasy', 'Can't Find My Way Home'... and so many others. Loving your classics dives guys! 👨🦳💕
This was the Rock N Roll Hall Of Fame 2004 ceremony where George Harrison was being inducted and fellow Wilburys, Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne (along with George's son Dhanni) were set to perform in George's place. Prince was also being inducted that night and there had recently been a Rolling Stone article about the top guitarists and Prince was placed very low on the list. Tom Petty invited Prince to join the performance to prove his guitar talent. Prince showed up late for the rehearsal so another guitar player filled in. When Prince did show up he heard the other guitar player nailing it and having fun Prince said "let him do the solo and I will add something on the end..." Steve Winwood was also being inducted that night as a member of Traffic.
We knew we were witnessing something special that night. Never could I have imagined a time when Prince wasn't here but his genius that night would still be inspiring generations now. Beautiful 🧡
I'm so happy to see that y'all reacted to this. This is my absolute favorite performance of Prince!!! I wouldnt have even said this was one of my liked sings before I saw this. The singing is extra in this performance too, I think. ❤❤❤❤❤
This song is more on point now than ever before. So many people perverted by believing misinformation, filled with hate, unable to unfold their love. RIP George. Thanks for this song, and I hope we live to see times when it is not so needed.
One of the best musical performances ever, so much talent in one place. Tom Petty & Jeff Lynne guitar and lead vocals, Marc Mann, guitar, Steve Winwood, Dhani Harrison, Prince. Scott Thurston bass, Jeff Young is on Piano, Steve Ferrone on drums, Jim Capaldi percussion.
Dhani Harrison is the young man between Tom Petty and Prince. He’s in the background of a lot of Tom’s vocals. He looks exactly like his dad! If you knew the Beatles better there’s no way you wouldn’t of known he was George’s son. Just by looks. And I also loved his reaction to Prince falling back and being caught. First time I’ve seen prince smiling so much performing. He was actually having fun and I love it!!

Prince was so underrated as a guitarist. He is slaying it!
People often forget what a musical genius and unbelievable guitarist Prince was.
Dhani Harrison is the young man behind Tom Petty, on acoustic guitar.
He looks just like his dad 😅
@@RockinMamaThe do.
Scott Thurston was on the right. He joined Tom Petty and
and the Heartbreakers in 1989.
Before that,he was in The Stooges, with Iggy Pop.
This is incorrect. None of them wanted Prince there.
@ sorry-my bad. Thanks
The thing people don't understand is that Prince was not saying "I was amazing, no one could have done better than me!" when he dropped his guitar and walked away. He was saying "That's how a band full of legends plays a legendary song!".
Prince didn't even go to the rehearsal, he told them to leave him a space at end & he destroys the flippin stage!
jeff lynne is one of the greatest writers and producers ever,,, few musicians are his equal,,,,, and live he is incredible
I am 60 and my very first concert was ELO back in 78. Dude can still sing like he did almost 50 years ago.
@@snerdtergusonyes maby but lynne was the biggest when it came to production,,,, dont think any off the others came close in that respects
Ya, he's so good that's why he didn't want Prince on the stage.
Dhani Harrison with the "what the hell am I doing on stage with Prince" look on his face, brilliant
My favorite Beatles song along with Something and Here Comes The Sun. Ironically all written by George Harrison
I totally agree, with all the songs Lennon and McCartney wrote George had some monsters.
The older I get the more I realize how much of The Beatles heart is George.
Not many people can pull off swaggin like Prince. Coolest person in every room he ever entered. 😢❤
Steve Winwood was not actually in the Wilbury’s, lot of other bands and a great solo career however
Winwood was not a Wilbury Bob Dylan was.
Steve Winwood was not in the Willburys. It was George Harrison, Tom Petty, Roy Orbison, Jeff Lynne and Bob Dylan.
RIP George Harrison 🎸
If Eric Clapton's original was weeping, Prince's was uncontrolled sobbing. :)
Screaming for mercy, I always say.
@michaellarusch4317 Finally someone with the story correct. Thank you.
@michaellarusch4317 Finally someone got the story correct, thank you. 💜
Truth! Finally!
Yep, thank you for this post. Have read this story before & am so impressed w/ how badass of a move that was for Prince to pull.
Black Pegasus’ face when Krizz starts talking about Prince being over on the side of the stage and knowing he was about to step into the light and blow everyone away. 😂
Prince threw his guitar to God to hold for him til he got there RIP 💜💜💜
Via his roadie who handed it to Oprah Winfrey in the front row ... which is less heartfelt but did happen. Wish there was footage showing Oprah's face ... I'm guessing it was beyond WTF! 😂
Prince was inducted into the hall of fame at the same time as George Harrison. That's why Prince is in attendance. Prince never showed up for rehearsals for this song so his guitar playing suprised everyone. Love their reaction to Prince's solo.
Jeff Lynne is basically 'Electric Light Orchestra". Mr. Blue Sky, Don't Bring Me Down, Telephone Line, Turn to Stone and a lot more.
Oooo woohoo
Prince did not show up for rehearsal. His solo was ad lib. BOOM!
George sang both of the parts that Tom and Jeff sing. They sang each part true to how George recorded it. Tom was perfect❤️
this showcased Prince's guitar chops. The guy was enormously talented playing many instruments, composing and performing. He was not considered in the upper echelon of guitar players but was excellent. He was joined by a few hall of famers for this performance and it showed.
If you've ever seen George Harrison, you wouldn't have to ask which one was his son. He looks _JUST LIKE_ his dad.
Prince, one of the most underrated guitarists of all time.
JEFF LYNN IS THE LEAD SINGER OF ELO
Jeff Lynn is ELO😅
Look up a photo of George Harrison while he was in the Beatles, you'll tell who his son is
I watch this video every couple of months. Every time Prince gives me chills. Masterful solo.
What you didn't say was the great Billy Preston was playing the piano which he did for the Beatles a few times. He was real good friends with them.
Look for the interviews with Tom and the guys about this. Said they had no odea he was gonna go off like that but they all caught on quick that something magical was happening
Prince is the coolest human to have walked planet Earth.
Tom Petty had his own persona and he brought it to every song and performance. His voice was unique and that's what made his music memorable.
These are ALL world-class musicians!
this was one of the best performances ever and to have all those legends on stage would have been amazing to witness live. glad you got to finally check this out kali
Jeff Lynne helped George Harrison with his album and did a lot of production. He was also in the Traveling Wilbur's with Tom P. ,Roy O., Bob D. and George H..
Steve Winwood (from Spencer Davis Group, Traffic, Blind Faith & solo) is playing the Hammond organ!
Steve Winwood on the organ
think Traffic...Eric Clapton and Steve Winwood project... ua-cam.com/video/FJIuzl1jx7w/v-deo.html
The tambourine man is Ray Cooper. Long time percussionist for UK bands in the 70's. Including Elton, Clapton and the Beatles solo work.
Ray Cooper and Elton toured in the 90s. First set was solo Elton and second set was Elton and Ray. One of the best shows ever.
Rememnber Jeff and Tom were in Traveling Wilburys with George Harrison... Dahni Harrisb is Georges son behind and next to Tom
to step up and play off the cuff like that is just incredible,,, and weirdly its a testament to his talent
All these guy's are legendary 💪🤟🤟🤟
☀️This was such an EPIC performance! 🌟
Please check out the original, I think it's Eric Clapton & The Beatles together on the original version. 🎸 "My Sweet Lord" 🎸 is also a must hear.
Never get tired of this performance I can hardly believe it’s been 20 years ❤️🔥✌🏻🫶🏻
Take a look at a picture of George Harrison and you’ll see Dani looks just like his father. It’s amazing.
Just watch his “Dear Mr Fantasy” live at Crossroads 2008
Or check out his early teen work with The Spencer Davi’s Group” like “Gimme some lovin” or “I’m a man”
Steve is an insane talent.
I’m sure someone already said this, but when Eric Clapton was asked what it was like to be the best guitarist in the world, he said he didn’t know: “you need to ask Prince.”
That statement has been credited from and about many other guitarists. It's urban legend at this point.
Jeff Lynne is a top notch performer, musician, producer and sound tech
George Harrison wrote’ While my guitar gently weeps.”
Steve Winwood on the keys. He sang "Higher Love" in the 80's
Jeff Lynne- Songwriter and lead singer and musical arranger of ELO and part of Traveling Wilburys. He also collaborated with the Beatles and co-produced with Tom Petty, co-wrote and co-produced a Beach Boys song and other things.
Prince was there to prove a point because had just recently been left off of a list of "Top 100 Rock & Roll Guitarists". He definitely made his point!
Jeff Lynne is known as a producer and for his work with Electric Light Orchestra
I think I've watched this performance 1000 times and every time I watch it I get chills
This was a memorial concert for George Harrison who passed away in 2001
This was the Rock N Roll Hall Of Fame 2004 ceremony where George Harrison was being inducted and fellow Wilburys, Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne (along with George's son Dhanni) were set to perform in George's place.
Beautiful 🧡
He's not going to show up unless he knows he's going to kill it😂
He should still be here
I'm so happy to see that y'all reacted to this. This is my absolute favorite performance of Prince!!! I wouldnt have even said this was one of my liked sings before I saw this. The singing is extra in this performance too, I think. ❤❤❤❤❤
I love it when legends collaborate. Always good!
They were all there for George, no competition.❤😢😮
Prince killed it! 🎉 you really have to hear George Harrison play the original.
Prince is a bad ass!! He did this to honor those before him. And, he has an opportunity to show off.
He was the Brightest Star on every stage he ever stood on, he is probably the best all around musician the world has ever seen!
Absolutely awesome reaction, loved it, thank you Gents 🙏🦉❤️🐊👍
