The i4 takes BMW into uncharted territory. Jonathan Crouch drives it.
    Ten Second Review
BMW's i4 is a mid-sized EV sports saloon aimed at the very heart of the business sector, a car that incorporates all of the company's traditional brand values. And does so in a way that should appeal to EV customers looking for a more involving, individual choice in this segment.
    Background
The ICE age, as in 'Internal Combustion Era', is almost over and BMW is ready for what lies beyond. This car, the i4, was at launch the most important EV the brand had introduced to date. And there's a good case for calling it the most important BMW for decades.
The company's been dabbling with EVs for a very long time now, ever since its 'Project i' division produced the ground-breaking little i3 back in 2013. After that though, there was a rather disappointing seven year gap, at the end of which we got a conventional looking EV version of the X3 (the iX3), then a year later, what looked like a properly dedicated design, the iX, which did in fact merely run on a (heavily modified) version of the company's combustion-orientated CLAR platform. The i4, launched in 2022, isn't designed around a properly bespoke EV platform either - that's coming with the 'Neue Klasse' EV models the company's introducing later in this decade. But it is very much a 'proper' BMW, as we're about to find out.
When you imagine a 'proper' BMW, the car you tend to think of is a 3 Series saloon and if you were to conceptualise one of those as an EV, this is pretty close to what you might end up with. Actually, this i4 has a bit more in common with the brand's swoopier 4 Series Gran Coupe, not least because it has a swept-back GT silhouette with a tailgate rather than a boot. Anyway, what you need to know is that there's lots of carry-over between this i4 and those 3 and 4 Series models, all three designs made at the same BMW Group Plant Munich German factory.
This car gets the fifth-generation of the brand's advanced 'eDrive' system, which incorporates this Bavarian maker's latest battery, motor, and charging technologies. And it's intended as a sportier alternative to pricier versions of more established Executive mid-sized EV sporting models, nearly all of them cars that really were designed from the ground-up as EVs, like the Tesla Model 3, the Polestar 2, the Hyundai IONIQ 6, the Kia EV6 and the Volkswagen ID.7.

I believe all i4s have heat pumps as standard in all markets. Also, all i4 variants and in all trims use self leveling air springs in the rear.

Also, just a little point. "B" mode is set at the max level of regen, for one pedal driving, whilst "D" mode is either Low, Moderate, High or Adaptive.

I have the i4 M Sport and really like it. The Michelin Pilot Sport tyres help the handling. The max range needs the 18 inch wheels.

finally I found a proper journalistic review! Fantastic!
Not a "look at front, look at back, I can sit in the front, I can sit behind myself but it's tight and oh look it even has a trunk (big surprise), look at all the app icons, it drives great and is heavy but covers it well, wow it's so efficient, it charges quick too, the end"-review which are all just so superficial and all the same.
Thanks for going in depth, explaining what the features actually translate to in real life and actually comparing to the competiton!!

Really interesting review. I have an iX3 which also based on the ICE platform, doesn't seem to suffer with poor rear space. One thing that I do miss on the ix3 is no sunglasses holder, no keyless entry (which is poor not being on a 60k car) and boot opening, and (admittedly picky) lined door pockets , everything knocks about and makes annoying noises.

You need to check out Tesla Björns videos about 800V systems and rapid gating and cold gating.
BMW comes out on top against all of the other systems because it has a flatter charge curve.
Currently the 800V system is just a marketing buzz. IRL it does not perform better than BMW or any other 400V system.
ALSO the same can be said about the special EV platforms vs BMW’s route on using same chassi for ICE and Electric.
Both Carwow and Tesla Björn tests showed that BMW i7 looking like a tank outperformed the MErcedes EQS looking like something that should be made for efficiency.

Does anyone know what the rear wheel drive i4 is like driving in the wet and snow? I really want one of these but I've never driven a rear wheel drive before, but I hear a lot of bad things about weather that's not sunny. I know someone with a Mercedes and he sold it because it was terrible in the wet.

Bit of a wash. The bottom-tier E35 has a lower maximum charge rate (180 kw) but the battery capacity is smaller, too. May be slower, but you don't have as much to fill up.
The E40/X40/M50 all have a maximum charge speed of 205 kw, all going into the same size battery.

Great review, however, I used to own a 2019 435d Gran Coupe, that weighed in at 1860kg. I now own the i4 edrive40, which weighs in at 2125kg. A difference of 265kg. Not 500kg, as you stated. We need to be careful not to fan the flames of the "EVs are so much heavier than ICE cars" brigade.
Nice review though. All the best. 👍

    • @KDR816
      @KDR816 9 місяців тому

You don't need a bigger battery. This is enough for 1-2 weeks of daily driving (400+km). If you follow speed limits you will 500+km on a single charge. But do you always travel 5 hours non-stop? And how often do you travel 500+km that extra 20 minutes become critical? Charging is very fast in this car.
I even think I should have gone for eDrive35 as I find my battery is more than enough, I make pee stops more often than I charge (made 4000km through Germany, Switzerland, France and Italy)

That's BMW's preferred charging network. That being said. To equip a 4 series with the same options that come standard on a Model 3, brings the price of the I4 up to about $66l US f. THe Model 3 long range is about $50k usd. After the tax incentive the cost of the vehicle drops to $43k. I own a 24 M440I GC and if I can get anywhere near my asking price, I'm buying a Tesla "S"

The main problem with BMW is that for the base price you get just four wheels and the badge. Everything else is extra. When you go for the M50 with all the options you pay double Tesla or Polestar DMLR performance money and get essentially similar dynamic capabilities.
The second problem is the in-house apps. They are never going to match android auto or carplay abilities and you are basically their prisoner for life.
