Kensington Philadelphia Drug & Crime Problems
Violent crime and drug abuse in Philadelphia as a whole is a major problem. The city’s violent crime rate is higher than the national average and other similarly sized metropolitan areas.1 Also alarming is Philadelphia’s drug overdose rate. The number of drug overdose deaths in the city increased by 50% from 2013 to 2015, with more than twice as many deaths from drug overdoses as deaths from homicides in 2015.2 A big part of Philadelphia’s problems stem from the crime rate and drug abuse in Kensington.
Because of the high number of drugs in Kensington, the neighborhood has a drug crime rate of 3.57, the third-highest rate by neighborhood in Philadelphia.3 Like a lot of the country, a big part of this issue is a result of the opioid epidemic. Opioid abuse has skyrocketed over the last two decades in the United States and Philadelphia is no exception. Along with having a high rate of drug overdose deaths, 80% percent of Philadelphia’s overdose deaths involved opioids2 and Kensington is a big contributor to this number. This Philly neighborhood is purportedly the largest open-air narcotics market for heroin on the East Coast with many neighboring residents flocking to the area for heroin and other opioids.4 With such a high number of drugs in Kensington, many state and local officials have zoned in on this area to try and tackle Philadelphia’s problem.

@Rosie: Thanks for your thoughts. I am 88 yo , born poor in a mining town. I have lived within America's growth and now steep "societal" decline. I am a retired social and behavioral scientist who also did clinical mental health work in corrections settings. So what I say next is a crude distillation of years of observations and experiences in large American cities.
      1. Immorality: In general, Americans were more "proper" in manners, speech, and presentation of self, up to the 1950s. The American Civil Rights movement, in combination with Vietnam War, Cold War , and civil unrest brought many societal changes... one being the erosion of good manners and rise of immorality . Music lyrics (rap, funk,), speech and dress reflected all this ... and people now did things that were actually antisocial in the past but now redefined as "cool" .
Within all the above, came the endemic problems of drug abuse. ... and, of course, societal breakdowns linked to drugs.
Today, many Americans do things that would be "shameful" in times past.... as if our moral compass was lost. This shamelessness is amply depicted in movies, music, and in homes where children are being raised....
Anyway, I recognize, that a social/behavioral scientist writing about immorality is weird....But, IMO, this may be because many Americans are now way different than in the past.
      2. Glorification of violence. I witnessed a tremendous growth of the "violence" merchants products. Americans literally wallow in its various guises. This violence industry is naturally allied with the immorality issues above. Americans are in love with gore and mayhem....the violence merchants are happy.
      3. MISCELLANEOUS other factors. ...
      I have to go now..
      Thanks for 📚 my post
      Hasta luego, Amiga

One guy bled his mother dry for years, playing a massive guilt trip on her daily, suggesting he'd be dead without the stuff, and to the point of when his younger brother found out he knocked him flat out and then kicked him and all his belongings onto the street. I've struggled with the pros and cons of drug legalization unlike any other philosophy of life. I see strong arguments for both sides. A truly free society has no business being involved with what you ingest, so as long as you don't infringe on others, EVEN if it is self-destructive. There are plenty of people that use even occasional hard drugs, and live essentially a normal life. But then you have the evidence here of what hard drugs often leads to. Then you have the flip side of heavy handed law enforcement, which often leads to an abuse of the constitution where law enforcement becomes a bigger detriment to society than these poor drug souls. Even marijuana is a gateway which often leads to hard drugs. I'm truly perplexed. Help me.

I mean everything those people consume is already illegal and still those streets look like from a dystopian movie scene. I don't think the availability of the drugs, if legal or illegal, really matters that much, if they want to get crack, meth or heroin they will get it anyway. if people's lifes are so fucked up they don't do anything but get high, it leads to this. But the prohibition creates issues with dealers, additional health risks and other issues and i don't see the point.

I don’t know guys. My moral compass says this isn’t right - this is bad, it’s very wrong. I feel from the bottom of my heart that we 🇺🇸 are too free and we are getting ourselves in over our heads. Not just with this crisis but with all the other issues that are snowballing. I think we are in need of new order.

@@causti9744 I think it's more complicated than that, Causti. THIS is evidence of what happens with an ultra liberal approach to dope. Not to mention, often, drug usage progresses into darker and darker areas. People aren't just refining the poppy plant now, they are playing with an extremely risky and deadly fentanyl. Yet, again, nobody has the right to tell you what you can do with your body, UNTIL you hurt OTHER people. Fast food probably kills more people than drugs does. I'm perplexed with this one, especially since we are seeing a complete breakdown with government, whom I don't trust to enforce laws like I once did.

    • @otrdriverchris
      @otrdriverchris 3 роки тому

@@MissMarshall Certainly, Miss Marshall, a heavy handed police would certainly "clean" things up fast. I could fully understand a ruined store owner wanting his livelihood restored with the firmest means possible. But again, the flip side to this is what we are living TODAY, what the founders warned us of, a tyrannical government. The 4th waiver of the constitution wasn't meant to be thrown out so a dog could alert and search you. Not to mention cops being ultra politicized now. You are ok with government telling you want you can't ingest or not?

I am Japanese. I cannot speak English at all. I speak Japanese among Japanese in Japan. I have no experience of visiting other foreign countries until today.
I have no experience in meeting homeless people in Japan. In 2023, the Japanese population is 124,000,000 and the number of homeless people is 3,065 from Hokkaido to Okinawa(Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare) After seeing this UA-cam, I became tearful and could not sleep every night. In this UA-cam, every homeless person is not so old, and the character is gentle. I want to hold them, everybody tightly.
I saw this on UA-cam many times with tears. I became very angry with US politicians especially Mr. Trump and Mr. Biden. The two gentlemen can be seen on CNN many times but, both always talk about the US Great Again and support Israel killing Palestinian lovely babies, children, and women 32,070 and never talk about the miserable lovely homeless people in Kensington at all. I want to invite one of the homeless people in Kensington to my small Japanese house. Mr. Trump and Mr. Biden
should visit Kensington immediately. I cannot sleep tonight.
