Kensington Philadelphia Drug & Crime Problems
Violent crime and drug abuse in Philadelphia as a whole is a major problem. The city’s violent crime rate is higher than the national average and other similarly sized metropolitan areas.1 Also alarming is Philadelphia’s drug overdose rate. The number of drug overdose deaths in the city increased by 50% from 2013 to 2015, with more than twice as many deaths from drug overdoses as deaths from homicides in 2015.2 A big part of Philadelphia’s problems stem from the crime rate and drug abuse in Kensington.
Because of the high number of drugs in Kensington, the neighborhood has a drug crime rate of 3.57, the third-highest rate by neighborhood in Philadelphia.3 Like a lot of the country, a big part of this issue is a result of the opioid epidemic. Opioid abuse has skyrocketed over the last two decades in the United States and Philadelphia is no exception. Along with having a high rate of drug overdose deaths, 80% percent of Philadelphia’s overdose deaths involved opioids2 and Kensington is a big contributor to this number. This Philly neighborhood is purportedly the largest open-air narcotics market for heroin on the East Coast with many neighboring residents flocking to the area for heroin and other opioids.4 With such a high number of drugs in Kensington, many state and local officials have zoned in on this area to try and tackle Philadelphia’s problem.
What’s crazy is that this is taking place not in some 3rd world country, but in one of the biggest cities in the US

These people spend more money than a regular family would spend on their mortgage and other bills in every month. It's crazy how drugs can make you broke your entire life, including your finances. It is also saddening to see those small kids witnessing someone's life getting destroyed by drugs.
Maybe because they're witness to it, they will turn away from drug use!

I remember saying back in the mid 90s how Crazy it was up there never in a million years thinking it could possibly get any worse!!!! I get it though! I remember taking the the train up one day to cop with all the intentions to go right home and ended up staying for months!!!!!!! This happened quite often. Thank GOD I made it out!! Many don’t.

Same. I started going there around 96. Eventually, at some point, I ended up staying there after my car broke down until Valentine's day of 2002 when I admitted myself into yet another rehab but, that time I was seriously ready to get my shit together. I did a few stays in jail here and there in between and tried several rehabs but, just went right back to the streets every time. It was just as bad then only they started trying to "clean the place up" so everyone did most of their dirt in alley ways and abandoned houses/buildings and under bridges etc...
I'm sure they will try the same thing again once they get the okay to start filling all the jails back up again. They love to profit off the sick just as bad as the dealers do. Soon enough the revolving jail doors will open back up and the officials will line their pockets with fines, costs and restitution while they pretend to give a shit and make it appear as though they are "cleaning the place up".

I worked a transition house and seen it all, they know how to work the system..it's dreadful and really unforgiving. They chose to destroy their lives but unfortunately they destroy their family and their friends too

I've watched videos on Kensington lots of times just wandering if they have the area has a safe injecting rooms because we've all seen them shooting up in the streets...also do users get clean equipment and are there chances for these addicts to get clean?..
The amount of people you actually took footage of with needles hanging out of their arm was shocking. Looks like Portland, OR minus the massive amounts of tents and garbage everywhere.

I'm so sure in their young lives, they all had a vision, dream, thought, that they'd be great. This is where elementary school should take the kids instead of saying say no to drugs, show them the results of messn round with that stuff and where it'll get you....
IMO and this is just my opinion. I feel that if these people had been told that life is hard, and you only get out of it what you put into it. And that it’s a very short time in the grand scheme of things. Most of these people were told that they could have it all for virtually nothing in effort. Then when it doesn’t happen they say oh F’it I give up.
@@mikeinindy2856 could be true, I remember when I was a little girl we lived off a main street and at the end of the street was a prostitution corner and drug house and I would look at the girls not in a degrading way but I would say to myself wow they must make a lot of money as I became a teen those women faces, bodies would change and after time new girls would take their spot and it hit me their washed up and their no good... something happened to these people in their young lives not sure if it was rape, molested, loss of jobs, family member and they weren't able to get back on their feet....I was molested but I didn't take this route I did pop pills, been clean for 5 years now I guess everyone is different and take different avenues for coping with the past.... stay safe 🦋

Kensington is not safe to walk around. This is a small neighborhood out of roughly 100 neighborhoods in Philadelphia. Downtown Philadelphia and the historic area are actually very nice.
