- In Episode 21 of Show Us Your Junk!, we are given an all-access tour of El Studio by, the one and only, Phil Manley. You may know of Phil from his far-out bands Trans Am and Life Coach; but what you may not know is that this guy is also the owner of a historic diamond in the rough recording studio located in San Francisco, California.
Built in the 1980’s, and certainly retaining that vibe, El Studio has been a session home to REM, Melvins, and Christian Death. It’s cork lined walls emanate a raunchy vibe and there is no shortage of cool audio engineering paraphernalia to make bands sound rad. Huey Lewis’ ½” demo tape machine? Got it. Ampex MM1200 16 track that was acquired for FREE?! Got it. Woah man, that’s gotta sound awesome.
As a touring musician of more than 25 years, Manley has gathered a nice collection of very LOUD music gear - not what you usually see at recording studios - but maybe this isn’t your average dude. Maybe this isn’t your average studio. Maybe he knows something we don’t. He definitely knows how to push that Champ into an Ebow/Arpanoid freakout.
Take a look behind the scenes at El Studio’s potent stash of oddball effects pedals and more. Crack open a cold one with Phil and enjoy a peek at some really cool junk.
Video: Chris Tran
Music: Octolope, Ultrasphinx, Lisa Bella Donna

The best "gear oriented" series on YT. Point.
Thanks @furlag2, we appreciate it! Stay tuned for more.
Welp, time to listen to four Trans Am records in a row. Again.
really can't go wrong with that decision.
I'd love to see one of the 'Show Us Your Junk' at Beck Hansens studio 🙌
After watching this and you don’t know Phil Manley is or who Trans Am are listen to these tracks now ‘Play In The Summer’ and ‘Strong Sensations’ fucking love this guy and that band. Been a fan for years! Great episode Earthquakes Devices.
Just casually says Jon. He’s an absolute legend.
Best gatefold ever. Really ties the room together
Amazing ‼️‼️‼️I was at the front of the stage during setup asking him dumb questions when they played last time in Toronto 🤓🤓🤓🔧🔧🔧👾👾👾🤠🤠🤠😻😻😻😻nice interview earthquaker
I still have and use my Buzz Box. Such a wonderfully gross, morose pedal!
You're probably one of the few people that can actually tame that beast
Golden
someone had to say it.
The restaurant that made that food was Leo’s Mexican Food in Houston. I grew up on that food and were friends with all of Leo’s family.
i saw trans am in la like 17 yrs ago because i had heard f u guys and was blown away with both u guys i knew to like but also !!! i m a player from sf back in the 90s of agnes morhead, and la pistola, i am playing again and have been since around 16’ and i was trying to figure out how to get back in the scene i w a part of for hundreds of gigs with cool people like bitchcraft, spilt, bomb, further, the pale horse, and only now look back at my peers at the time were mr.b., melvin’s, neurosis, sleep, stelepole bathtub, grotus, plainfield...all persons i knew, know or was offered a chance to play with, or wr just playing the same place at te same time period and then i gave up on my own life i had been so dedicated to because of people who thought i was just a dry druggy i’m now in a position to put al my life left to put out the 100s of hrs of recordings along with publishing rights to my ,life’s work in word. form, also i still haves a good collection of my art posters from a handful of gigs in berkeley and sf
So much goodness on this video!
I was lucky enough to see Phil play in both Trans Am and Golden at a basement show in Lemoyne, Pa. waaaay back around '94-'95. Glad to see he's still recording/putting out good noise (specifically, Wooden Shjips stuff!) Oh, and I just saw Lisa Bella Donna put on a clinic a month or so ago here in Pgh - Lisa was fab! Great work, Earthquaker!
Thanks Kurt! Means a lot! Happy New Year :)
I've never heard of this guy,...but, just a fascinating video. Wish it was longer -- I now have "new" music to listen to.
and that's what its all about! Have fun!
I think buzz said this about the buzzbox “is that what I sound like? If it is then I should quit playing guitar.”
I think he also said something about it sounding like a vacuum cleaner.
@@simonreverb619 "The Buzz Box is totally worthless. It sounds like a vacuum cleaner." - Buzz Osbourne.
Phil is legend
Wow to be in the room Ozma was recorded. 🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯
I would very likely give up use of my legs if S.U.Y.J could be a weekly 30 min series.
That's a way to end a video !
Jesus Christ, I immediately recognized that Marshall Super Bass. If only the Earthquaker cameras were around to document the classics tracked on overdriven Mackie preamps late at night at the old Golden Leaf building 🇺🇸
Another serious gear nerd and total legend. Would love to get in to this studio and root around! C19 has little benefits, but this series is making it all bearable. Don’t know what I’m going to do when I’ve finished them?!!😳😱
The dude looks like Mr. Huph from the Incredibles
Very Good!!!
Nice, will have to check it out sometime!
"do you wanna see all the tape machines?" FUCK YES
another solid video. loved this.that amp collection tho!
Yaaaaa phil!
That was excellent.
thanks for watching!
Seems like every other one of these ‘Show Us Your Junk’ has a studio owner or engineer who has a Melvins story, like you ain’t shit unless you had some interaction with the Melvins
Golden was lit.
He sounded even more douchey saying "Hooked a brother up" lol -- I love this series, it's addicting. Surprised you all don't have more views & subs.
You can help by spreading the word! Thanks for watching and thanks for all your comments
🧡🧡🧡
thanks!
Had a friend that went to oberlion, she majored in creative book binding
Nice
Can't this just be about John Theodore ; )? - these Junk vids are super dope - thanks for doing them!
thanks for watching them!
Nofx!!!!???
Mint.
He pointed at an ampeg. The camera guy Interupted and asked about the 4x12 sunn and we never got to hear about some other interesting amps there
I miss Trans Am...😢
rep the AMPEGS
"Have you heard this pedal?" "Have you heard this pedal?" "Have you heard this pedal?" No, but I'd like to.
almost got to drop that V4 knowledge....
I’m asking myself, “How do you follow a mural-sized Tres Hombres gatefold?”
haha right, right
Have the hiwatt 50r yeas really louder than 50 w !
Cutie pie
Please Chris(Tran) shed me a hint on the "3D layer" intro effect.
I had never heard of The Fucking Champs until they played at a club I worked at. Pretty much blew my mind. I see he had an Epiphone Valve Junior head there as well as all his vintage stuff. Should not have sold mine..
Phil failed to mention his ZZ Top cover band.
Everything in his amp collection is just loudness. He wants to be heard. Ace show once again EQD!
thanks Jin J, glad you enjoyed it.
bros my dad
whats up with that 12 string wedge shape guitar in the background
9 string as used in The Fucking Champs, which Manley was in.
Ozma is the best Melvins LP.
Fkn cool. He looks like the typical 80s hollywood movie nerd who's always cooler than you
wasted - your life aint as bad as mine
Why the fuck did you guys not talk about the ampegs he had
Be nice please
