You probably have to gradually build up your intake of niacin (in the form of nicotinic acid) to about 1000 - 2000 mg/day to achieve a substantial increase in HDL. I've done it. But the problem with niacin (besides the skin flushing, which is harmless but bothersome) is that you will possibly see a rise in blood sugar (i.e. higher HbA1c) and a rise in Homocysteine, which you don't want. If you can wrap your head around the idea that the consumption of fat, including saturated fat, is AOK, then indulge in that and your HDL will increase. Just be sure you are limiting your carb intake significantly as well.

The best thing about the change to Keto, is that it's not dieting. It's a change in diet. I've lost 26lbs. in two months. The plantar fasciitis that I've fought for about 5 years is completely gone, along with the daily dose of Meloxicam. And two belt nothces moved in the right direction. Thank you Doctor.
A niacin flush is a common visible reaction to high doses of niacin (over 50mg). It can look and feel somewhat like a sunburn, but it typically begins 15 to 30 minutes after taking niacin and only lasts for about an hour. The flush is considered harmless, but it can be uncomfortable. Also, I found out 1st-hand caffeine will amplify the flush affect. YMMV
At my last physical August 2021, my HDL was finally up. I had been trying for years to get this done. Since May 2021 I’ve been watching Dr Berg, and been on healthy keto and IF, within 2 months my HDL was finally going up.
It only too 2 months to raise your HDL? My HLD was 35,52 4 months ago but I've been running everyday since then and ate only healthy food with olive oil and took 16 mg of niacin everyday. Do you think it has increased a little? I want to reach at least 45 so I can finnaly say that I'm safe since my total cholesterol was 137 and LDL was 92
I'm 74 years old and my HDL's are 37 (low) so after watching this video I got some 500 mg Niacin with flush. I took one capsule and within one minute had a HUGE flush. Within 5 minutes I had fainted and was lying on the floor with my head bleeding. A half hour later I was in the ER for a CT scan. I recovered. Bottom line: Use caution using Niacin.
I noticed that was 2 years ago. How are your hdl levels now? I want to try the niacin flush, but it sounds like maybe I will just wait...or take a much smaller dose.

I tried niacin and i started with hives and ended up with open sores all over my arms and legs. Even if it is a small amount in a combination supplement, i will stay up all night scratching. Never been so miserable. Earlier in my life my hdl was very high from exercising too much. I dont recommend that either. I now have joint pain in my hips from that exercise. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us. In just 3 months my blood lipid labs went from "you are going to die in 7 days" to exceptional great results. It was like night and day. Best of all I feel amazing. Now I'm not diabetic, but definitely was showing signs of insulin resistance. 3 months ago fasting glucose was 105. Recently it was 100. I'm aware that building muscle can reduce insulin resistance in the body. We appreciate you Doctor!
Great advice Dr. Berg. Just a comment about pistachios whooping 51-to-1 omega 6 - to- omega 3 ratio. So take an extra omega 3 wild catch salmon pill to compensate
Apart from other things, what i love abt u doc, getting straight to point. No beating round the bush. Its simple thing, but most dont understand it. Thats not intelligent. Right!!?
Been doing keto/low carb for over 6 yrs now and my bloodwork improved so much since then. My total cholesterol went slightly up from 192 to 210, ldl stayed about the same around 110, hdl went up from 54 to 93 and triglycerides plummeted from 145 to 47. My doctor who follows the “standard of care”protocols still wants me to take a statin to get my total & ldl numbers down. 🤔
A year into keto. hdl went from 60's to 98. Don't care about ldl; look at TG/HDL ratio instead. Before keto, my ratio was as high as 1.7. Now it's down to 0.47. Doctors are still prescribing statin unnecessarily. Keto is the way to go.
Your Triglyceride/HDL ratio is way under 2. You're fine. If this doctor doesn't get something important like this do you really trust him with other health matters? They are expensive but maybe look for a " functional medical provider."
I was wondering what you were going to say, because I’ve been taking Niacin, thanks to my functional medicine doctor. So I’m happy to hear you say Niacin. Yes, my HDL has gone up and my ratio is now in the healthy range, although my total cholesterol hasn’t dropped much. I’ve also been intermittent fasting about 5 days per week (14-16 hours). My CT score went from 8 to 28 in 5 years. Now I need to focus on longer fasts and a more heart-healthy eating, to reduce the atherosclerosis. I wonder what my CT would’ve been, had I not been taking Niacin, baby aspirin and intermittent fasting. Thank you for all you do.
Dr. Berg has a video regarding the misconceptions and Drs. views of TOTAL Cholesterol numbers that are outdated. You may wish to view the videos to learn more. Take care.
My doctors have been trying to put me on stations for a couple of years. I saw your video on Berberine and here is a comparison of my Lipid numbers from March 2023 to Sept 2023. I have been eating low carb for years but gradually going up in my weight. My daughter started a 40 day keto diet with IF and I saw such a difference I put the whole family on the diet to their chagrin. BUT now they are happy!
YMMV
How much niacin do you take to take to improve hdl?
@@matymindset6173 I take 250mg Immediate Release Niacin (with Flush) to lower my triglycerides. The non-flushing niacin won't affect them.
I want to reach at least 45 so I can finnaly say that I'm safe since my total cholesterol was 137 and LDL was 92
@@shadowrock better try keto diet for may and check again ur lipid profile in June mid
@@shadowrock You need far more niacin than that. The flush disappears after a while.
Oh no that's awful! Im glad you're ok now.
you should have gradually worked up to that dose.
It happened to my husband as well.
I noticed that was 2 years ago. How are your hdl levels now? I want to try the niacin flush, but it sounds like maybe I will just wait...or take a much smaller dose.

Best video on HDL I have ever watched.Thank you Dr. Berg
Thank you for clear and precise content with minimal fluff.
Niacin did wonders for my cholesterol. Sadly, I needed to discontinue because it was triggering gout attacks...
Definitely DO NOT TAKE ASPIRIN.
@@mem1701movies why?
Never heard that before. I would think it is something else.
I am 70 years old , I started keto because I need to get down my cholesterol,I am pre diabetics be down level sugar and finally my blood pressure,in 3 months two thinks my blood sugar is really good , my blood sometimes my cholesterol I wait for the results, but I lose 27 pounds I was 57 or more now 130 , but , I start to lose pounds very slowly in this month I take the decision no look any more my balance and I going to do fasting more longer 3- to 6 to see what happens but away I feeling so good in my first day let’s see what happens next , i got this style of live I don’t want to look back
I tried niacin and i started with hives and ended up with open sores all over my arms and legs. Even if it is a small amount in a combination supplement, i will stay up all night scratching. Never been so miserable. Earlier in my life my hdl was very high from exercising too much. I dont recommend that either. I now have joint pain in my hips from that exercise. I have tried 2 meds for cholesterol, but i fell down taking both as it affected my balance. . I think i am going to enjoy my 225 cholesterol.
I tried niacin once and got hives... some people simply cannot tolerate it. For us it's not just a "flush."
Thanks doctor berg for this video!😊🙋♀️🤗❤🙏

Thank you for the easy to understand info. Often times other doctors make things hard to understand by using jargons and medical terms/explanations that people do not understand. Your explanations are perfect without going into complexities! Thank you 😊
The reason they are unable to dummy down in layman terms is because they don't understand it themselves.
Dr berg always give me best information that I need. God bless you doc!
He doesn’t believe in God
I'm going to give it a try! Seems like my HDL never budges.
Thanks a lot doctor for providing very informative and super important checklist as always.
Never taken Niacin but my HDL is sky high lol. I do exercise. 💜💜💜 Thx Dr Berg wonderful as always
may I know what exercise you do? thx.
Hello dr,your summary for HDL is so useful and informative. Thank you so much Doctor Berg for excellent advice
Dr I am impressed me a eye surgeon ....Ur knowledge is commendable
Thank you 🙏🏽 for this and your time in researching 😊✊🏽🌺💙🦍
My HDL has been in the 100-125 range for years. Most recently 123. I guess now I know why I need to take your GB formula. It helps.
Great. Wishing you good health. Take care.
So the issue I am running into is how to increase fiber, yet control overall carbs. Advice appreciated.
I LOVE you! May Jesus bless you for speaking saying the truth.
Thank You for another healthy dose of Dr. Berg!!

Great, timely video, Dr. Berg! Only from you did I find about about niacin vs niacinamide! A decent internet search yielded nothing for me.
Wow very sad that such helpful information is so hidden but I'm happy you found it!
Both are still slightly elevated but the trend is in the right direction. I've been doing a lot of HIIT and resistance training too. I'm aware that building muscle can reduce insulin resistance in the body. We appreciate you Doctor!
Thank you! Dr.Berg for making us a genius like you!😁❤💐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐🙋👍👍
Beef liver too, it's great. And i think beef tallow, it has a lot HDL (i think) and k2 for the heart.
Right!!?
My HDL has gone up to 125 since I went Keto.
Another thing you can do is take plant sterols. My HDL is very high.
My HDL went down. I have been doing all you mentioned in your video 😢. Help me
Wow ! How we thanks you .you are in my prayers .
Niacin also raises NAD for anti aging benefits. In fact niacin is probably one of the most important vitamins for supplementation.
Do you know if it's safe to take 1000mg daily for skin rejuvenation?
@@petrichor100 I don't know if niacin espacially works for skin rejuvenation. And I can't say if 1000 mg is safe to take. I take 100 mg.
@@Andrew-0815 thanks for your reply. I am just speculating but if it raises NAD, it must have some skin benefits
@@petrichor100 NO! Not at all! Even 500 mg of niacin is very dangerous. It will cause fainting and bleeding in the brain
Walnuts should also be on the list!

Find a different doctor.
A year into keto. hdl went from 60's to 98. Don't care about ldl; look at TG/HDL ratio instead. Before keto, my ratio was as high as 1.7. Now it's down to 0.47. Doctors are still prescribing statin unnecessarily. Keto is the way to go.
Dont take the poison. You are doing great!
I'm going to try the Keto and, yea dump that doctor. Your blood work in on point!
What's your doctor name???
Any way to get online appointments???
What is baby aspirin?
what dosage do you take of B3 ?
Dr. Berg has a video regarding the misconceptions and Drs. views of TOTAL Cholesterol numbers that are outdated. You may wish to view the videos to learn more. Take care.
@@Mallick7 It is just a lower dosage of aspirine here in the US for children.

I did not appreciate that niacin flush because it also made my heart speed up in a scary way.
Yet doctors are suggesting medication to increase HDL 😐😐😐
My doctors have been trying to put me on stations for a couple of years. I saw your video on Berberine and here is a comparison of my Lipid numbers from March 2023 to Sept 2023.

Triglycerides
205 down to 80

I'm a bit concerned about my HDL dropping into the low range.

I have been eating low carb for years but gradually going up in my weight. My daughter started a 40 day keto diet with IF and I saw such a difference I put the whole family on the diet to their chagrin. BUT now they are happy! In just five weeks the four of us has lost a total of 74 lbs. ( and I know they cheat sometimes!). lol 😂 KETO will be our life from now own…under my roof.
God bless Dr. Berg!🙏❤️✝️
I heard coconut oil is great at raising Hdl , while on a keto or carnivore diet ! I heard 2- 3 tbsp a day spread out should do the trick !
Hi Dr Berg, I followed your advice here. My last test showed my HDL at 101. My doctor accused me of drinking too much alcohol and wrote that in my lab results report. She didn't ask me any questions about my diet or my supplements. 😢
I actually kind of enjoy the niacin flush in a weird way. It's painful, but somehow it feels good🤷
Hi Dr. Berg, love all your videos, they have radically changed my life and my connection with food! I was wondering if cold pressed mustard oil or sesame oil are safe to consume and they do not increase inflammation in the body?
Thank you for the video...so informative 🙂🙂🙂
Various factors affect HDL cholesterol levels, as these levels are lower in smokers, obese, sedentary people, diabetics, and people who eat large amounts of sugar.

My doctor said my HDL is high and she had never seen a higher HDL before.I take MCT oil every other day I think that's what makes My HDL high
How much MCT oil do you take? Do you split it up over the day or take it all at once? Are you fasting while taking it?
@@thirtythree160 I don't fast but I take 1 tbsp mix with my coffee in the morning.
@@thirtythree160 Exactly how much, he may have in a video if you use MCT oil as a keyword. Be very cautious with it when beginning and start slow.I did learn that from him after I took way too much all excited about it. Too much, too quickly and you will have a bad case of Diarrhea.
