The late, great Buddy Rich was asked in the 1970's if there were any young drummers coming up that he liked and he said "yeah I like that kid from Chicago uh, Danny what's his name".
"Make Me Smile" was recorded for their second album, Chicago (often called Chicago II), which was released in 1970 ... The centerpiece of the album was the 13-minute song cycle "Ballet for a Girl in Buchannon" written by trombone player James Pankow, from which came the singles "Make Me Smile" and "Colour My World" ... A radio-friendly edit of "Make Me Smile" was released as a single in March 1970, becoming the band's first Top 10 record ... Pulled from the first movement of the "Ballet for a Girl in Buchannon" suite, several changes were made in order to make the song more suitable for radio. This included a modified introduction and abbreviated guitar solo. Finally, parts of the track "Now More Than Ever" were appended on the end to make a complete, 3-verse song ... The album received three Grammy Award nominations - for Album of the Year, Contemporary Vocal Group, and Best Album Cover. It was voted best album of 1970 by readers of Cash Box magazine. - excerpts from Wikipedia

What a beautiful declaration of love from your wife. That's the case with "Make Me Smile": on the album "Chicago II" "Make Me Smile" is part of the song cycle "Ballet for a Girl in Buchannon" (worth listening to in one go). “Now More Than Ever” leads this cycle (7 songs) back to the opening theme at the end. For the solo release of “Make Me Smile” these two parts were simply put together.
Chicago was one of the first bands that I latched onto, but I have some words other than cheesy for their 80s and subsequent output that I won't mention here, lol. It has been explained that was part of a suite which I think you would enjoy hearing. Quite simply, when Terry Kath died, so did the soul of the band.
CHICAGO, "MAKE ME SMILE"... for over 50 years those original Chicago songs are all masterpieces... Singers Keyboard Robert Lamb, Guitar Terry Kath, Bass Peter Cetera.. all shared lead vocals thru the far out 60's, and the Groovy 70's... Until the untimely death of Terry Kath... One of the first Album bands popularize with my 12year old friends...
I grew up loving Chicago, but you have to listen to this song, and many others by Chicago, by a Tribute Band that will blow your mind as to how good they are. They are made up of Russian/Ukrainian musicians and vocalists that emulate the original songs as good, if not better than the originals. Sound's crazy? I know, but check out 'Leonid & Friends' and then tell me what you think.
We have enjoyed many of their covers, in fact. Actually, we were just watching their performance of 'Make Me Smile' about an hour ago. They are so accurate to the original material. Fantastic musicians.
Chicago started out as Jazz/Rock fusion. After the leader of the band and lead guitarist, Terry Kath, died in a gun accident, they moved to more a pop rock sound.

This is part of a seven-movement suite titled "Ballet for a Girl in Buchannon", on Chicago's second album. The record label at the time of the release in 1970 joined together the opening and closing movements, "Make Me Smile" and "Now More Than Ever" (a reprise of "Make Me Smile") to release a single of "Make Me Smile" that sounded complete. You should listen to the entire suite, which also includes Terry Kath's lead vocal on "Colour My World" (Note: the link is NOT MINE, I am not self promoting or promoting any affiliated link, so I should not be violating your comment guidelines. WTF ? What a HUGE surprise ! I don’t know the in depth history of Chicago , all I know about them was the Bovine Scatology era of Peter Cetera and his slow dance songs and his super annoying voice ..😡 THIS … on the other hand is like finding gold in them there hills ! This is FANTASTIC .. liked the horns n the musicians in general, but the singer ! Wow , what a powerful , mature voice that guys got .. pleasure to listen to and the biggest compliment I can give him is that it matched Levi Stubbs who in my opinion is the best male vocalist of the 60’s . This is a first for me and I’m super enthused to try it , I’m gonna look up Chicagos discography, dispense with the later Peter Cetera dross and starting at the beginning check these cats out … I’ve learned something today hearing this early Chicago stuff , and that’s a GOOD thing .. cheers 🍻 👍🏴

Peter had an annoying voice, eh? How come he sang on 90% of their hit songs? His vocals were the best. I like Terry's soulful vocals as well, but Peter made that band successful for many yrs.

Buddy also liked Steve Gadd & Bobby Colomby from Blood,Sweat & Tears.
Danny Seraphine, one of the nest drummers in all of rock

Surprised you have not called out the wonderful earthy vocals from Terry Kath, I think he makes the song. Cheers.
There's a lot to unpack with this song.
I didn’t know his name but woah that dude can sing ! I did point that out in my own comment as it’s SO in yer face

I always look forward to the Friday Favourite music 🎶 Introduction !
RIP Terry Kath.
This is a nice surprise. I thoroughly enjoyed it , especially since it's so different to tbe Chicago i knew. It's more like a Motown song.

3 different singers in one band.
Terry Kath wasn't just an amazing guitarist, he could sing as well. What a loss he was to music in 1978.
So sorry you didn't do Tanglewood live!! Soooo much better!! Wouldn't have to worry about remastered crap!!! 😢
Chicago were a really good quality band in the 70's as this demonstrates. Would love to have seen them live at that time.

Great horn section that you don't hear now days.
I think Chicago’s best song was “Colour my World”. You need to check this one out.
Ballet for a Girl in Buchanan is equal to the Abbey Road medley as a musical movement on a rock album.
Thank you for your reactions. I hope you would also react to their hit 'Questions 67 and 68' - thank you.

Chicago wasn't cheesy in the 80s. There were a lot of bands from the 80s that were cheesy, Chicago wasn't one of them. They were always great.

25 Or 6 To 4 is one with Peter singing, but it's one of the best songs we've heard. The horns and guitar in it are unbelievable.
WTF have you heard done with the real Sir Jay?
