Terry Kath on guitar and vocals...a legend! He was the soul of this band. This is one of his best vocal performances...just belts it out from the heart.
Second year of high school, beautiful light blue double album with Chicago emblazoned on the front in cursive writing, memory from the day I bought it.
This was a blend of the opening and closing movements of a seven-movement suite titled "Ballet For A Girl In Buchannan", written by trombone player James Pankow for Chicago's second album, Their song "Colour My World" was another movement in this suite that like "Make Me Smile" was released as a single by their label at the time Columbia Records. You should listen to the entire "Ballet" as one continuous playing to experience this song and "Colour My World" in their intended context. Glad you enjoyed the early Chicago music, Terry Kath was an incredible guitar player, songwriter and vocalist. Rest in peace, Terry.
Song was written by the trombone player, Jimmy Pankow, and recorded in 1969. It was released on Chicago's 2nd album, Chicago II. Lead vocalist and guitarist Terry Kath's talent are on display here. Sadly he died in 1978 from an accidental shooting. He thought the gun was empty and jokingly put it up to his head and pulled the trigger. He was under the influence of several drugs at the time. Great loss and the band known as Chicago was never really the same after that.
This is the beginning of a song blended into two songs called "Ballet For A Girl In Buchannon" It starts with the extended version of "Make Me Smile" then transitions to "Colour My World" then back to the extension of "Make Me Smile" from the Chicago II album released in 1970. All of it great!!
Great composition and fantastic performance by the unique talent of Terry Kath -- his vocals and the amazing guitar solo. The horn section arrangement during the guitar solo is brilliant, adding to the excitement both harmonically and rhythmically. (fyi, there was not a single blues element in this particular song.)
Hey, lovely couple. This song was a main part of a medley they did, of many of their songs put together, called Ballot for a Girl in Buchanan. You should try that one. In my opinion, their version of it live, at Carnagie Hall, was a masterpiece, but if you were ever to find it online, (it had been removed) I would make sure that you pause it a couple of times. Just saying. Keep up the good work, making some of us smile.
I'm going to see Chicago and Kansas later this year and I cannot wait! I can see why you said they sounded similar because they both have progressive sounds. They're two of my favorite groups from my country and in general of course. When I see Chicago, I'll be thinking of Terry Kath the entire time, and when I see Kansas I'll have Robby Steinhardt on my mind.
Early Chicago with the late great Terry Kath (RIP) was FIRE!

The Best - Timeless ✌
Just so you know. The horns were not a background band. That was Chicago.
Yes! Walter Parazaider on Sax, Lee on Trumpet, and the great James Pankow on Trombone!
Great reaction to a great band.
Terry Kath amazing guitarist and singer, great Happy Chicago tune
If ever a song should get A+, Make me smile is it. At their peak what a band. 1970. Magnificent.

Released in 1970. You can never have too many horns in this kind of a song...

It's nice to hear the outstanding full version instead of the AM radio edit.
