A couple more of their famous ones...I'm a man, or the famous slow dance tune Colour my world....
The guitar player is the late, great Terry Kath, also singing lead on this one. The drummer is Danny Seraphine. You really need to react to at least one of their songs live from Tanglewood. Though you already did the studio version of 25 or 6 to 4 I know you'd love the Tanglewood performance of it. Terry absolutely kills it with an extended guitar solo. I'm a Man gives each of their three lead singers a chance to shine and is just a banger. I saw them live several times in the 70s and they were always great. But they were in a different zone for the Tanglewood concert.
Agreed!!
Check Rick Beato "What Makes this song great" episode .Kaths isolated vocals are other worldly.
Great is understating it.
Yes Sir. Terry Kath had a very Soulful voice. He tragically died from a gum accident. It was also said he was one of Jimmy Hendrix favorite guitar players. Chicago has been one of my favorite bands since the late 60's.
"These Brothers Are Clean!" ....truer words never been spoken about this band on this tune
Their first two albums are masterpieces. The whole records. Recommended songs: "Question 67 and 68", "Beginnings", "Does Anybody Really Know What Time It is", "Saturday In the Park" , "Feeling Stronger Every Day", "Color My World", "I'm a man", "Poem 58", "Listen" ... Seriously. Just drop the needle on the first two albums and you'll get fire.
Saturday in the Park! Yes!
All of these songs will fill you with some serious good vibes.......
Don’t forget Lowdown! Everyone forgets lowdown.
And for those that may not know. Their first album, they went by the name of Chicago Transit Authority.
All of the Above!! Especially, "I'm a Man ", Question 67 and 68, and "Beginnings "!! Classic!!
That singer really let his inner Joe Cocker out...
Chicago is a REAL band... I love them. Such amazing musicians. Like a LOT of the 70s bands.
"...inner Joe Cocker..." YES!!! Best description of Terry Kath's voice I ever heard!
Terry Kath singer and guitarist was absolutely stellar! This song is definitely one of my favorites. Love everything about it!
"Does anybody know what time it is" is real groovy. Has a great flow
"The Terry Kath Experience" is the documentary about the guitar player.
Thank you! Love Terry
Made by his daughter too.
I was going to recommend that too but then read your comment. It is so worth a watch!
Drummer Danny Seraphine, who was more if a traditionally trained drummer, was one of the few rock n roll drummers who got respect from Buddy Rich. Bobby Colomby of Blood Sweat & Tears also would get a shout-out from Buddy. Lead guitarist and singer Terry Kath was the heart & soul of the band. His chemistry with Danny was always a hi-lite of the band. Ignore post Terry Kath selections. It was never the same. Too much to choose from, from the original band.
Danny is completely underrated imo.
Unless you are a drummer.
And they let him go. They said he couldn't keep time anymore
@@1bigrowdy I think he was drinking a lot those days. He got known for hitting the bars with organized crooks.
The soulful sound of Terry Kath. And as a guitarist, he was stellar. Terry couldn't read or write music, but he could hold an entire composition in his head.
AND HE WAS FREAKING 20 YEARS OLD!!!!
“I’m A Man” by Chicago! That drum solo!
ABSOLUTELY!! Despite It's a remake of a Spencer Davis group song!! Love the Chicago version Much Better!!
Thanks 4 giving Chicago their props! Well deserved! The trombonist was 22 yrs.old when he wrote the intricate composition Make Me Smile is a part of. I suggest you listen 2 a live & studio versions 2 hear their talents on full display. Enjoy!❤❤😊😊
This is such a gem of a song. Please do ‘Feelin Stronger Every Day’. ❤️
Masterpiece. Danny Seraphine on drums was one of those drummers I listened and learned from early on. Chicago is so fine, the arrangements and musical genius. Great band.
"Make Me Smile" is the opening movement of a seven-part suite titled "Ballet For A Girl In Buchannon", written by Chicago's trombone player James Pankow. Danny Seraphine was the drummer, he was highly praised by the great drummer Buddy Rich. Jimi Hendrix saw them playing at the Whisky a Go Go and told the band "you've got a horn section that sounds like one set of lungs, and a guitar player that's better than me!". Terry Kath was the guitar player and baritone voice on this track. Seven white dudes from Chicago (Keyboard player Robert Lamm was born in Brooklyn, NY but raised in Chicago). with a lot of funk, soul, R&B and jazz influence in their rock. You need to experience the full seven movement suite, which includes "Colour My World" (also sung by Kath) in the middle. What you played here is the radio single version, which has the suite's ending "Now More Than Ever" appended to the end of "Make Me Smile".
Another MUST track in "Poem 58" on their debut album as "Chicago Transit Authority". Kath on guitar, Seraphine on drums and Cetera on Bass open the track with 4 minutes of instrumental funk before the vocals come in. Kath's guitar on "Poem 58" will have you agreeing with Hendrix that Kath was incredible.
Chicago ain't no joke....truer words never said 🤣🥰💓
Their music was always so well orchestrated. To hear them get really funky/jazzy & rockin' do "I'm A Man". It's a party in a song.💙
SATURDAY IN THE PARK 💕💞💗💖
Good call man,you have very good taste.
It's another rabbit hole!! LOVE CHICAGO! Beginnings and Feeling Stronger Everyday are the next 2 u should hear!!♥️😁
"South California Purples", "Poem 58" and "Beginnings" are songs you should check out. "Beginnings" would be a great next choice because it features the other lead singer in the group Robert Lamm who is kinda the middle voice where Peter Cetera is the hi pitched voice and Terry Kath is the low gravelly one who sang this song.
This is the quintessential Chicago. 25 is the preeminent Chicago song but this really showcases all of the elements of the band. Danny Seraphine smokes the drum track. Terry Kaths whisky voiced vocals perfectly contrast the tight horn arrangement. And Peter Cetera, who sang the lead vocal in 25 or 6 to 4 incredible moving bass line drives the song.
My favorite Chicago tune.
Love early Chicago! My rule for this band is to find the longest version of any song cuz' there's always solos that were cut for radio length.
I absolutely love them too.
Chicago takes me back to summer time in my high school years. They were always putting out hit after hit. I am glad you can learn about the music we grew up to.
Grew up and love Chicago. Best concerts ever. But Chicago and Earth Wind and Fire concert was absolutely amazing. They both went on stage separately played their songs but both bands came together to play the songs we were all waiting for by both groups and sang them together as one large band. I'll never forget it.
To join the band, you gotta rock AND be a band nerd. Always love hearing them.
To me, Terry Kath (RIP) was the heart and soul of the band and he brought the rock edge to the band. As others have stated you really need to see him perform live to witness his greatness. The great Jimi Hendrix (RIP) appreciated Kath’s exceptional talent. His guitar playing has been under appreciated by music journalists but not by fellow musicians of the era.
Please react to one of the live performances. Love your channel❤️
"Introduction," the first track off the first album, where guitarist Terry Kath introduces the band, is a masterpiece. 🎼🎶🎵🎸🎷🎺
Chicago has it all! Their music is so well put-together, like Rush, Kansas & Boston. And of course Pink Floyd!
This is the guitarist singing..Terry Kath. I prefer his voice. He's a white guy.. He was great. He made Chicago what they were. When he passed away they weren't the same for me. Try "Questions 67 and 68" or "Beginnings"
Rest peacefully Terry🌹
Have a great day Van!
Agreed....they weren't even remotely the same band without him. If you haven't seen the documentary The Terry Kath Experience I highly recommend it. 👌
I cried when Terry Kath died. They weren’t the same. But you can’t take away that their highest charting singles were dominated by Peter Cetera. His Bass playing and singing were pretty damn masterful as well. “Free” and “Dialogue” would not have been the same without him and Terry playing off each other.
Dana, just as a fun comment, did you know that your last name is the same as the actress, Jane Seymour? (Joyce Frankenburg)
She was a Bond girl, starred in "Somewhere In Time" and "Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman" to name just a few.
@@zimjun7 Yes.. My sister's and I have always wondered. We have UK relations in our DNA. Thanks
@@viacrucis2509 I agree their biggest were with Peter singing but Terry gave them a certain substance that was lost without him. They brought in David Foster and the radio liked it but I couldn't capture it except with song "Stay the Night"..that one I liked.
People these days dismiss Chicago because of songs like You're the Inspiration, but they hit hard and had some of the BEST musicians and singers around. Terry Kath (the singer in this song as well as the guy in blue above your head in the video) is so underrated as both a singer and guitar player, their drummer gets overlooked, and people always seem to sleep on Peter Cetera as a bass player (the one that sang on 25 or 6 to 4), but this song lets each of them shine. You've done 2 of their top songs, in my opinion, so next should be Beginnings for both great musicianship as well as the golden voice of Robert Lamm.
I agree with everything you said. I also agree with the next suggestion as it is a masterpiece and a great example of Robert Lamn on lead vocals. Lamn and Kath were phenomenal. Cetera, in my opinion, to a lesser extent. I love these old groups, many who had 2 or 3 lead singers, whose music is timeless. Three Dog Night is another example of a band with 3 lead singers.
An incredibly tight band. They honed their craft on the road as they toured constantly.
Chicago is forever worthy of some love. Glad you're enjoying 'em! ☺♥
You know Van I am way older and grew up with Chicago on the radio. I was never much a fan (only loved one or two songs) but after watching you point out all that is great with this song I'm rethinking my view. Fun fact the bands name was originally Chicago Transit Authority. Love you Van keep up your good work!
Awww…. You should go to a show! Seeing them live will make you a forever fan!
If you don't know the Chicago music of '68-'78, you're really cheating yourself.
@@rubicon-oh9km YES! For me it was simply the best of Chicago. Not really a fan of the 80/90s stuff but I do appreciate it. I respect David Foster but I think he killed any tiny piece that was left of Chicago after Terry died.
Go down the Chicago rabbit hole.... you'll be glad you did. Anything pre 1980 is absolutely amazing
this song was written by the Trombonist, James Pankow. the drums in this are out of this world! The singer is Terry Kath, the lead guitarist, whose voice has been compared to being a white Ray Charles. They all went to music school in Chicago, several had tryouts ofr the symphony. The drummer is Dan Seraphine - very underrated also.
Since you like this style of music, try auditioning the band Blood Sweat & Tears. Songs like Spinning Wheel, God bless the child, More and more, Lucretia McEvil and others. You'll be pleasantly surprised, they are as polished as Chicago.
You're definitely gonna love so much of their stuff - make sure you check "Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?" off the 1st album, they were Chicago Transit Authority then.
With intro!!!!!
This has always been my favorite Chicago tune. The singer is the late great Terry Kath, also the lead guitarist. Many people thought the lead singer of this song was black due to how soulful it was sung. RIP Terry...
you need to do the live version from Tanglewood for 25 or 6 to 4, and make me smile to appreciate the songs
Top-tier musicians, every single one of them. Musicians of the first order.
Just LOVED this reaction to a band that stands alone in their class !!!
Chicago are true legends. They had a long career, and were super successful in the 70's and 80's. For me (and many), they were their best in the 70's. So talented and ambitious. By the 80's they had changed into being more of an AM radio singles/ballad band. The singer in this song was Terry Kath (who people said he sang like a "white Ray Charles"), but was also a lethal guitar player - one of the best. He sadly died in '78, and the band (for me) was never the same.
Terry Kath's guitar solo is phenomenal! The arrangements were superb. I heard these records when they were first released in 1970. Listening to the album smoking joints and waving joss sticks in the dark...memories!
A dear friend of mine who died not too long ago use to say to me a lot that Chicago was the best Horn instrument band ever
I saw Chicago in 1972 when I was pregnant with my son! Amazing concert! I’m so glad I was born in the great music era!! Real musicians and real voices so when you saw a group live they were giving you their whole being. ☮️🙏🏼🌺❤️
Mom?
Chicago's 'I'm a man' is my absolute favorite song from them.
Masters at their craft! Such great musicians!!
Hey Van I'm sure you don't do re-reactions to songs but PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE check out this song Live in Tanglewood 1970. When you see Tery Kath sing and kill the guitar you'll appreciate it EVEN MORE!
right you are!
Yes!!! Totally agree! Remember when I had STB react to live Tanglewood selections, including 25 or 6 to 4? Van needs to check out the live version of that as well, Terry Kath's solo on that is FIRE!! If Van wants to be blown away by the instrumentation and funkiness, he should react to Poem 58 and South California Purples. 😁
@@finessemuse2123 I'm a looong time STB subscriber myself, he's THEE gold standard😉
Hard to say I'm sorry is my favorite song of theirs. Absolutely love Chicago 😍
Hey Van, you have to check out Chicago's song "Dialogue Parts 1 & 2" I think you will dig it! I've only seen two reactions to this great song! It's a pretty fitting song for what's happening today, just as it was when it was written. Love your channel and your analogies on the songs! Spot on!! By the way, the guitar player and lead vocalist🎙on this song is the the late, great, phenomenal Terry Kath!🎸 They called him the white Ray Charles! Chicago's best music was when he was leading the band!! Peace brother!✌
Hey LFR Family. I like your reactions. If you want to hear Chicago just as good as the original Chicago just pull up a live studio version of Leonid and Friends. They are all Russian and I have never heard a cover band so good, They also do some Earth Wind and Fire and a Steely Dan song. They are some fantastic musicians. Just play one song from them and you will be hooked.
Second this ⬆️ Btw, this is coming from a Chicago native and resident.
Oh man, these guys were SO GOOD while Terry Kath was alive! So much more to hear! "Saturday in the Park", "Questions 67 & 68", "Does Anybody Really Know What Time it Is?"...and so much more...Danny Seraphine was that awesome drummer in early Chicago.
Terry Kath (rip) singing he’s also the one rippin the guitar. They still had a lot of hits after his death, but they lost his soul. Robert lamb on keyboards also sang. Later the singer of 25 or 6 to 4, Peter Cetera, became the voice of Chicago, which led to some animosity in the group. He left and became a voice of the 80’s. Danny Seraphine, the drummer, had chops for sure.
Uplifting music. What a concept.
I’ll say it… UNMATCHED!!!!
I saw them in concert while I was still in high school. They were awesome! Best concert of my life! We came out of there with our ears ringing and probably some lifetime hearing loss because they were so loud. If anyone has to yell my name to get my attention, I yell back "Chicago"!
Congrats for finally discovering this greatness. Tight horns, killer drummer, lyrics...the whole band is outstanding. You need to keep diving in. All White musicians and singer....that surprised a lot of people. And the city of Chicago made them shorten their name from "Chicago Transit Authority" to just CHICAGO. Brilliant band.
Bro, when you said "This is grown up music here." We melded.
I’ve never listened to more music by them but these brass sections are so good!
This song makes ME smile; grew up with Parents that played Chicago, Led Zeppelin, Allman Brothers, Motown; very blessed. “Stronger Every Day” is another great Chicago song, Van ❤️
I've seen them 5 times in concert and their band sounds the same live! Awesome musicianship! They celebrated their 50th anniversary of a working band a few years ago! Glad you enjoy them! Try "Beginnings" next!
He is the dude, guitar and vocal deity, above your left shoulder.
The guy with the wicked guitar solo on the last one....
( 25 or 6 to 4 ) is now on mic. (& guitar) showing more of his tremendous skills...
Yes ladies & gentleman its... Terry Kath ✌😎
Check out any of ghe songs from the concert when Earth Wind and Fire played with Chicago. Two powerhouse bands together is spectacular!
Absolutely, Mary. I attended two of those concerts in successive summers at the Jones Beach Theater in Wantagh, Long Island. The concerts WERE spectacular!. The last song of the evening was "25 or 6 to 4". when both super bands were jamming together, it was just amazing!
Saturday in the Park, Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is (Terry Kath sings lead), Baby, What A Big Surprise, Wishing You Were Here, Feelin' Stronger Every Day, so many other great hits from the 80s
Hard Habit to Break is one of their best. There is a live performance of this one and it is killer!
Chicago is a rabbit hole you should get into.Terry Kath the lead guitar player sings this one,he has the soul of Bro. Ray Charles.Check out Colour my world.
Chicago has something for everybody.I Love it all.
You hit that high note as well as they did. LOL! This song has about 30 hooks in it! Such a great arrangement and brass writing.
To Again answer your question about the Drummer!! That's Danny Seraphine!! His drumming was Phenomenal!! Especially when fused with the vocals and lead guitar of the Late Great Terry Kath!! Early Chicago was Phenomenal!! Gotta hear "I'm a Man ", Question 67 and 68", and " Beginnings:!! Absolutely Brilliant!! Thanks for reacting to This Classic!!
TERRY!!
CHICAGO is in the rock ‘n’ roll Hall of Fame and the three of the seven original members are in the songwriters Hall of Fame.
I was born in DC in 1971 & when I was a teenager in the 80’s the underground was POPPIN & Chicago was 1 of those bands you just didn’t admit to liking 🤷🏼♂️you just didn’t do it,but these days? Yeah they’re f•ckin AMAZING! 🖤🤤
Absolutely love your reactions!! You really get Chicago...they were so incredibly good and yes, they did grown up music. Terry Kath (guitar) was one of the top guitarists and he is the singer of this song, which has probably already been mentioned in the comments. Can't wait to hear more of your reactions to other Chicago songs. You might want to listen to some Steely Dan, also another incredible singing, playing and song writing band.
"Make me Smile" makes me sooooooo Happy.
Wow! Boss? Good stuff, bro. Good stuff. I love you. Keep doing this, THIS,
This singer is Terry Kath. He was also the lead guitarist. Jimi Hendrix considered him the best guitarist on the planet.
This band has something around 40 million album sales worldwide...for a reason.
Terry Kath the lead guitarist and lead vocalist on this song was often called the white "Ray Charles". His voice was soooooooo underated.
This was the band lineup for Chicago for this album...
Robert Lamm - keyboard, lead and backing vocals, occasional acoustic guitar, bass pedals
Lee Loughnane - trumpet, flugelhorn, occasional keyboards and acoustic guitar, backing and occasional lead vocals
James Pankow - trombone, backing vocals, occasional percussion and keyboards
Walter Parazaider - saxophones, flute, clarinet, backing vocals
Danny Seraphine - drums, percussion
Terry Kath - lead guitar, lead and backing vocals, occasional bass
Peter Cetera - bass, lead and backing vocals, occasional guitar
Made some of the best love songs ever written
I'm like you. Knew of Chicago but never really thought they were all that when I was younger. Most likely because all I knew was their 80s ballads. They are amazing.
Welcome to my favorite song from my favorite band in the history of EVER!! Early Chicago music (the decade of the 70's) is absolutely unmatched, in my opinion. Okay, at the risk of sharing information that someone else has already shared, here goes....
Terry Kath is a BEAST on the guitar, one of the most underrated of all time. Rumor has it that when Chicago was just starting out and opened for Jimi Hendrix, he told one of the band members that "your horn players sound like one horn, and your guitar player is better than me." He is also the one sharing those soulful, gritty vocals on this song, and your question about "is he black " is not silly at all. Many people have often asked that, and some people call him "the white Ray Charles." He tragically accidentally passed away in January of 1978.
You were right on with the vocals; this is not the same singer as "25 or 6 to 4." Chicago used three lead vocalists: Terry Kath, the soaring high vocals of bass player Peter Cetera (who sang on "25 or 6 to 4"), and the smoooooth vocals of keyboard player Robert Lamm.
Danny Seraphine....MY MAN. He is the gentleman who was lighting the drums on fire. As a young drummer, I patterned everything I did after Danny and his phenomenal skills. Rock chops with jazz sensibilities.
The horn section: second to none. So clean, so tight, and SO good!!
I don't know what else you've listened to (besides "25 or 6 to 4"), but here are some suggestions: "Saturday in the Park," "Questions 67 & 68," "(I've Been) Searchin' So Long," "Feelin' Stronger Every Day," "Introduction," "Free," "Beginnings," and "Call On Me." Have fun!! 😁
Terry Kath Guitar Player Sang on this song, He died young in 1978. Peter Cetera Bass Player sang 25 or 6 to four. Danny Seraphine was the drummer. Robert Lamm the keyboard player was the other lead voice in Chicago...but Peter Cetera was the principal one!
Yes is right! ❤❤❤
Funny you ask that, for years I thought Terry Kath (vocals and guitar) was black. He has so much soul in his voice
Their greatest song.
Your reaction is perfect!!!!!! The way I felt the first time I heard this tune.... I'm 66!!!!
My band teacher loved Chicago....we played this and many others!
This is guitarist Terry Kath on lead vocals. 25 or 6 to 4 was bassist Peter Cetera on lead vocals. Keyboard player Robert Lamm also sings some of their songs. Terry has the deep voice, Peter has the high voice and Robert is in between. They have a 3 piece horn section, trombone, trumpet and sax.
25 or 6 to 4, LIVE AT TANGLEWOOD.....Terry Kath Lead Guitar goes OFFFFFF. Cool Story: Jimi Hendrix was a huge fan of Terry Kath and Chicago. They used to hang out together. They were even supposed to collaborate and tour together, but Jimi went off to Europe, and never came back.....
The Man singing and Playing the Guitar on this song was the Late Great Terry Kath, RIP.
Lead singer on this song is guitarist Terry Kath, he is white but has a Ray Charles style voice. There are two other great singers in Chicago , keyboardist Robert Lamm and Bass player Peter Cetera. All of them sing lead on different songs and do the harmonies as well.
You are right. Lead guitarist, the late, Terry Kath sings lead on this song. (Kath was one of Hendrix's favorite guitarists and his vocals were often referred to as the "white Ray Charles"). Bassist, Pete Cetera sang lead on 25 or 6 to 4.
Danny Seriphene was their drummer.
Love Chicago so much...they will never be irrelevant in my eyes. Terry Kath (white guy lol) is the lead singer for this song but they always changed it up...Peter Cetera, Robert Lamm also sang lead. thanks for sharing LFR Family :)
Get your Lady nice glass of something and sit back and enjoy
Saw these guys several times, in concert, in Philly. In June of 1973, the opening act was one Bruce Springsteen, before the "E" Street Band. He was booed off the stage . . . . .
The guitar player/singer of this song is 1 of 3 lead singers in the group. Peter Cetera was the other and Robert Lamm liked staying in the background and do harmony but is a great singer too. He was forced to step up after the death of Terry Kath
DANNY SERAPHINE IS A WORLD CLASS DRUMMER AS THEY ARE ALL WORLD CLASS MUSICIANS WITH ADVANCED DEGREES IN MUSIC
They called up RAY CHARLES and said can you sit in on this song for us please! Hahahahaha! Terry sounds like Ray for sure.
RIP Terry Kath, you brilliant fool. 💙
all the surviving members will agree Terry Kath was the heart and soul of Chicago .
Singer is Terry Kath, the guitarist. At least 6 of the band members take turns singing lead vocals.
