saving the hag masked victims, you can knock them out in normal play, but don't loot the masks (that kills them), you can loot everything else if you choose but leave the masks- after a long rests they are free.
You can remove the masks, but only after defeating auntie Ethel (the long rest is still needed to talk with them). But as you said, if you remove the masks before killing the hag, they will die aswel
You can save Meerna by casting silence on area where Nere stands and killing him while he is silenced. Unfortunately gnomes act like Meerna is dead even though she still stands there.
The Spiders in the Goblin Camp will eat Brakkal if you set them free first. You'll still get his dialog, but it was funny to go to the trouble of releasing him just to look over and hear him start screaming as the big spider takes him down.
For Corliss, there's a way to get into the top level of the monastery without triggering the cutscene. Near the waypoint there's some vines you can climb and a wall you can break to get there. You can attack the githyanki from up there too which should let you save her. With the Mask of Regret, you can also still save her even if the hag goes into the hideout. You just need to switch to non-lethal damage and knock them out.
You can also try to "sneak past" using the masks in the previous room and the Protection from Good and Evil spell, but the "Enemy" Masks will be summoned to the Hag's side in the final fight, so your best bet is to knock um unconscious with non lethal dmg. The Whispering Mask also let you pass the poisonous gas without needing to use Disarm Trap, so still might be worth trying for some people.
Easily did this without sneaking too. I don't often sneak as a Barbarian but when was running around up there near the Lathander Puzzle and that ivy vine that goes down to the door, the fight will start, no cutscene. Unfortunately a few times I've done this Corliss didn't run so I had to get either Lae'zel or my Barbarian down there.
I killed Nere by casting Hold Person and shooting him at range to never trigger the cutscene. But she disappeared anyway and they treated her as if Nere killed her.
You can also save the rothe from the duergar herdmaster. Select the “leave” option from the triggered conversation, cast “speak with animal” then attack the rubble. This will trigger a conversation with one of the rothe, and you can use a speech check to either convince the rothe to submit to the duergar or to attack the duergar. The latter option will cause the duergar to turn hostile, but the rothe will now be marked as allies. After the battle, the rothe will clear the rubble if asked. It always makes me feel good to fight alongside the rothe as they get revenge on the duergar.
I used to be able to save Meerna if I attacked Nere before the cutscene, but now it is not possible, Larian did some changes in their updates making impossible to be able to save her. Every time players find ways to change the rules Larian correct it later, many "cheats" that I used before I cannot use it anymore. My friend who plays evil runs said to me that it was easier kill everyone in the grove and still have Karlach and Wyll in his team than now!
This the kind of stuff I like to do in a game of this type. It's about problem solving and puzzle figuring. Anyone can zerg through a game, which is unfortunately the predominant playstyle for one too many games. I like to search all chests, move all moveable items and dig in places for possibilities of what might be there. Disappointed when there's nothing? No. It's the fun of exploring.
You don’t have to prevent Ethel from going down to save the masked victims. You can just turn on Non Lethal mode during the combat, don’t loot their masks, kill Ethel, then loot their masks, Long Rest and you can interact with them and get the cut scene. The Halfling one with the hammer will go on a revenge path and leave while the others stay and you can also save the petrified dwarf in the main entrance if you throw Basilisk Oil on him (still wait for Ethel to be dead first though)
All you have to do to save Meena is press the attack button (button on the bottom left on a PC) before Nere yeets her into the lava. It will interrupt the cutscene and say "Are you sure you want to attack". Answer yes and the fight begins before she is killed. If Nere hasn't tossed her in the lava yet I count that as a save, whether or not she disappears then.
This is exactly the way I did it, super easy but you miss out on being able to side with the druegar and have to fight all of them. if I'm not mistaken
Sadly it doesn't stop the cutscene and further dialogue talking about her death. So it's still definitely her dying, even if you don't see her in the cutscene going into the lava. It's fun to imagine you saved her but that's just not the truth. Sorry 😔
You can save Mayrina's brothers by knocking them out "protecting" Ethel, and then killing Ethel before short or long resting or teleporting anywhere else.
You can simply stun the Hag victims at first encouter as I did. Unmasking them at that point kills them, but if you will stun them, then kill Hag, then go back - you can safely unmask them. After long rest you can talk to them
Now saving Alfira if you play as Durge is complicated... There is even a way to save alfira and the other bard, but you would softlock that durge personal quest if you do... (and would miss a lot of long rest cutscenes and interactions too, so it will screw over your save, but hey you can save them, read an article about that)
1. Go to the back, through the old forge. 2. Stack boxes until you can see the back entrance where Nere is trapped. 3. Use a teleportation spell for yourself and a companion. 4. Open the back door or knock it down. 5. Paralyze Nere with magic and kill him easily and take the head. Note 1: If you do this without paralyzing Nere or outside an area of darkness or smoke, Meerna will have low morale with you and will run away in fear and disappear, but will not count as dead. Note 2: Leaving Nere unconscious does not complete any mission. Note 3: Opening the entrance after you kill Nere or not does not provoke a fight with the duegar. Note 4: Doing this bugs the gnome quests and they no longer complete, as the scenes do not develop and most of them no longer talk to you. If you want to free them you will need to kill all the Duegar present.
I once accidentally saved Corliss by approaching the place where she and her halflings are with the githyanki from the side of the balcony above them. The place seems far enough to not trigger the cutscene.
I killed all the dwarves except the two near the boat landing, then when I freed Nere he attacked me instead of activating the cut-scene, so Meerna survived (I was flagged as an enemy of the guards so make sure you get seen killing some of the dwarves)
Hmm......... I have an idea, but no idea if it will work. It's kind of convoluted. 1. break Nere free, without triggering the cutscene (can do it as a transformed druid too) 2. create an oily surface AROUND him, but not beneath him. 3. put some crates on top of the surface, and some explosive barrels on top of them (enough of them to 1-shot Nere) 4. move Meerna away, and keep 1 character with her 5. set the oil on fire with another character 6. switch back to your character, that's next to Meerna and see what happens The idea is to 1-shot Nere, but delay the explosion, so you can be with Meerna when he dies, and also make it seem like "an accident", rather than you being directly responsible for it.
I never knew Smythin existed until this video. :o I've been in the spider pits to hang out, but I've never even noticed his corpse. Or I'm so used to looting bodies it didn't register with me he was an NPC beyond a function to just lay there XD I enjoy freeing Brakkal. I do that every time I go through the goblin camp. He's just so sassy haha! I absolutely love that some of the NPCs that seem unsaveable are saveable. They even gave them dialogue, which makes is so fulfilling to find a way
Meerna is one of the few scripted deaths. Even of you save her, which I did, by basically select the "attack" button on the corner of the screen once the cinematic starts, and killing Nere, the NPCs act as she died and she remains there, can't be talked with or interact with in any way.
with brakkal the goblin the the cage, i've always been able to disarm and open his cage by just sneaking where the gobbos can't see me. they don't even get angry when brakkal jumps out and runs right past them. holding shift shows you the gobbos' field of view, so just sneak where they can't see you (usually right next to brakkal's cage door)
Also did save Mayrina's brothers in my Durge playthrough, because I wanted to maxout Shadowheart approval, and that is the option that she approves of...
You can save the masks by simply knocking them unconscious on your way to Ethel. There's an option in common skills to trigger non-lethal attacks. I do this every time because ultimately it doesn't really make the fight any harder - you just have to make sure to last hit them with melee.
Smythin! My first playthrough i played a tree hippie ultra pacifist druid, and thus did my absolute best to ensure as few people died as possible (lots of nonlethal damage and talking my way out of situations). And I've always hated goblins. I quicksaved when I first saw them because I knew they were going to try and kill him. I did what you did, except i wildshaped into a cat and lead the gobs into a dark corner where me and my homies brutalized them. Saved Brakkal too. No innocent people died frivolously in that playthough unless it was scripted (Meerna, etc.)
I don't think you can really call Brakkal innocent. He admits to being a true follower of Maglubiyet and wants the goblins to go back to their old ways. Maglubiyet being a very bad dude and the old ways being kill people and take all their stuff.
3:13 little info, been there yesterday after i got Loviatar's blessing , but i decided to not let him run away wich was not that easy, since he tries to speedhack away once he gets damaged from the player, however, when you gathered the "wood woad shield" you get access to the binding spell on it, and if it is your first attack, he can not run away, wich gives you a window to actually kill him, wich is the only way to get loviatars scourge if you happend to steal the ritual weapons before taking a beating since in that case, loviatars scourge as his only remaining weapon does not appear in his shop menu. however, killing him removes the permanent "loviatar's blessing" so be carefull with your timing based choices there. 17.12.24 - tactician
I saved Smythin in the goblin camp, literally did a run just to save him for fun. Made a ranger with crow summon, used fly that casts blind upon landing then used arrow of many targets to kill all the guards around him. Then I knocked him out and put him in a box and carried it out of the goblin camp and released him outside the door, where when he came too he ran right back inside. Following him he went straight back to the spot where you save him, was two hours into this so I gave him a push and let the spiders have him.
You also can save the halfling victim when you talk with her while she has the mask and there is a check in dialog. After that the dialog option "because of your help i managed" will trigger after you rid of the hag.
you can actually save the hag mask victims if she gets into the hidden staircase; once you get passed the door, you just need to knock them out using the non-lethal toggle, but leave the masks in place (i.e. don't loot them). when you come back, they're awake and free of the masks. It's worked on my last three playthroughs
Im fairly certain that I managed to save Meena in my Durge playthrough I killed all the Duergar before blowing up the rock wall. The gnomes didnt say anything different than if the duergar were all still alive, but when you blow the rocks up Nere walks out and as hes attempting to kill them, you can interupt and stop them.
You can also try to "sneak past" the Masked Hag victims by using the masks in the previous room and the Protection from Good and Evil spell, but the "Enemy" Masks will be summoned to the Hag's side in the final fight if you do it this way, so your best bet is to knock um unconscious with non lethal dmg. The Whispering Mask also let you pass the poisonous gas without needing to use Disarm Trap, so still might be worth trying for some people.
You can save Merrna. Just tske your group up to the ruins on your left. Get one down and attack one of the dwarfs near the door. Clear the room. Then come down and blow the ruble, nere will be already hostile without a cutscene.
@@PedroViniciusRC what did you actually do? After you blow the blockage Meerna appears outside, if you put sanctuary on her before you talk to Nere she does not get pushed into the lava. She does not respond to you after this though because she is meant to have died.
I saved Smythin on my second playthrough because I was just running through the goblin camp killing everything. So I just walked up to them and pushed them off and saved him.
Lol, I just sprinted to Smythin and attacked the Goblins. It aggroed Rogzlin and everyone else, but after I killed everyone, Smythin was still there cowering and just thanked me as well.
a lot of these I knew... I never tried to save Meerna... I did save the guy from the spider pit (I use illusion routinely) and I did NOT know the brothers would react that way to hostility... it's counterintuitive but so it is... the hag I always try to kill before she goes underground... the arcane lock is an interesting method to be sure; I'll have to try it... but I had other methods, which is high damage output or stunlocking/frighten
meerna is hardcoded cutscene, looking through the dialog trees for Welso (in the decompiled game files), she always dies, there is no other dialog route.
6:38 you can also defeat the hags minions with non lethal damage , then they can be saved after you kill the hag. just don't loot their masks or they die instantly.
I snuck past the masked victims under Ethel's house and if you do, she summons all four of them in the fight making it even harder. If you refuse to kill them in the fight and take care of Ethel, they'll be free and give you the same dialogues as before like in your video.
I saved Meerna by attacking the Duergar before clearing the cave-in. But while she lived, the other Deep Gnomes would just act as if she was tossed into the lava anyway. This was probably in patch 4 or something though, so it might be different now
I actually saved the first encounter you did, way waaay easier, you can get close to githyanki from the balcony up top and hit with the ranged spell, or you can open gates from within the monastery which will also let them get away
Fun fact for dealing with Ethel. If you befriend through giving her stuff with trade you can use feign death on her and take the time to kill her. Using all 4 people in turn based mode is super funny lol
I remember for Meerna I was trying to do the fight with the drow and found out that I could one shot him with ranged attacks. Doing so will save her but it dose require luck and precision. If you get too close it triggers the cutscene and she dies.
Apparently as a Bard if you never interact with Ethel until the brothers are talking to her, you can pass an insight check and then call her out on lying and imply that she is in some form of disguise and she will vanish away leaving the brothers behind
The thing about the Hag's victims is. In a sense, only the one wearing the Mask of Regret is truly saved I would say. The way the other victims speak and act, even if they live. I think the other three were broken entirely by the hag, and just aren't really there anymore. If anything they are more like husks of who they used to be, unfortunately. I can't imagine they;d ever fully recover.
I 'saved' meerna by total accident very recently, neere pushed her into the lava but he missed and she was just standing there chilling on the thin bridge off to the side. Her brother was still sobbing like she was dead, but she was right there still for me just chillin. However she is definitely just not intended go be able to to live past that, she just repeats stuff from begore she dies
I do wish there was a way to save every single person, then have them at least make an appearance at a later date… maybe even have a mission. It just sucks looking at the NPCs knowing they’re going to die but there’s nothing you can do. Honestly the real Honour Mode would be “save all the NPCs”. Would truly make it so hard.
Honestly, the best outcome with the hag quest is to let her kill the brothers. Mayrina finally smartens up plus the brothers were annoyingly stupid. Thinking they can kill a hag with pitchforks and when we offered to kill the hag for free, they were like “piss off”. Wish we can have a dialogue option to blame their deaths on her.
i saved smythin a few days back.. the way i did it.. was stay hidden whilst directly looking at the goblins that normally would push him. i put the thing that stops time on. and used gale with magic missile and wyll with the scorching magic ability that is similar to magic missile but instead is fire based. and when i saved the guy. he thanked my character then ran off. the only one i am curious about if you can save him is kanon. as you say nothing in the game is impossible.
If immortal Arabella and Arcane lock are out of your reach, you can also throw the Spectator bottle in Auntie Ethel's house (Unless it's patched, which would be ridiculous). It also lets you speak to the dead in a perspective, where Auntie Ethel was not "killed" by you which is slightly more boring.
Oh wow, nobody knew this ! How dumb the entire community is ! It doesn't work ; stop posting the most obvious things on a channel dedicated to the game
I tried so hard to save the gnome that gets pushed in lava no matter what she dies. If you manage to "save" her she just disappeared and her brother cries about her being dead
Hmm.....assuming that after entering mountain pass they didn't despawn I will check out hag lair again. I did a normal fight with her but I managed to knock out all the masked ones and take the masks off them after killing Ethel. I fully expected for the game to treat them as pretty much dead, which what knocked out at times means.

It used to be possible to recruit headless Karlach, but no longer :(
This the kind of stuff I like to do in a game of this type.
Meerna's death is weird since your PC just stands there with their arms crossed and looks bored while that poor woman gets murdered mere feet away.
Sorry 😔
You really think you're the only genius who tried this ? It doesn't work
You can save Mayrina's brothers by knocking them out "protecting" Ethel, and then killing Ethel before short or long resting or teleporting anywhere else.
Helping you fills MY heart with joy!
You can simply stun the Hag victims at first encouter as I did. Unmasking them at that point kills them, but if you will stun them, then kill Hag, then go back - you can safely unmask them. After long rest you can talk to them
Or didn’t kill them or even didn’t attack them at all while fighting with her.
Sadly only one of the Masks has anything useful to say to you, and also turns up again in Act 3.
bg3 is about doing the impossible, make me feel very happy accomplishng it
Now saving Alfira if you play as Durge is complicated...
Me too! I did this as well! Up there is the perfect spot to avoid the cutscene.
1. break Nere free, without triggering the cutscene (can do it as a transformed druid too)
2. create an oily surface AROUND him, but not beneath him.
3. put some crates on top of the surface, and some explosive barrels on top of them (enough of them to 1-shot Nere)
4. move Meerna away, and keep 1 character with her
5. set the oil on fire with another character
6. switch back to your character, that's next to Meerna and see what happens
The idea is to 1-shot Nere, but delay the explosion, so you can be with Meerna when he dies, and also make it seem like "an accident", rather than you being directly responsible for it.
The one in the goblin camp is saveable. When you want trigger a big fight. You can also talk after that with him.😂
Also did save Mayrina's brothers in my Durge playthrough, because I wanted to maxout Shadowheart approval, and that is the option that she approves of...
that cat trick was smart, i just sniped them with a crossbow and fought them before they aggroed the boss.
I couldn't get the arcane lock to work on the stairs, she poofed away.
I'm the legend that saved this poor man from falling into the spider nest. But he died in the fight I triggered 😂
You can save the masks by simply knocking them unconscious on your way to Ethel. There's an option in common skills to trigger non-lethal attacks. I do this every time because ultimately it doesn't really make the fight any harder - you just have to make sure to last hit them with melee.
I think we need to show my mans the attack option in the dialogue/ cut-scene and the non-lethal damage toggle!
1:48 i just attacked the goblins from affar first thing as soon as i understood the situation
You also can save the halfling victim when you talk with her while she has the mask and there is a check in dialog. After that the dialog option "because of your help i managed" will trigger after you rid of the hag.
Even if you go that route with brothers, you do find them dead deeper in swamp near her house.
you can actually save the hag mask victims if she gets into the hidden staircase; once you get passed the door, you just need to knock them out using the non-lethal toggle, but leave the masks in place (i.e. don't loot them). when you come back, they're awake and free of the masks. It's worked on my last three playthroughs
Im fairly certain that I managed to save Meena in my Durge playthrough
I killed all the Duergar before blowing up the rock wall. The gnomes didnt say anything different than if the duergar were all still alive, but when you blow the rocks up Nere walks out and as hes attempting to kill them, you can interupt and stop them.
Pickpocketing the victims of the hag even after I killed her, kills them too
You can also try to "sneak past" the Masked Hag victims by using the masks in the previous room and the Protection from Good and Evil spell, but the "Enemy" Masks will be summoned to the Hag's side in the final fight if you do it this way, so your best bet is to knock um unconscious with non lethal dmg.
I have one shot Neer before he even passed the doorway. You can't save her.
I saved Meerna by putting sanctuary on her before Nere got close to her.
I’ll have to try that.
Didn't work for me...
I mean ... two of these you could've hit the crossed swords button during the cutscene and fight to prevent them from being killed
Lol, I just sprinted to Smythin and attacked the Goblins. It aggroed Rogzlin and everyone else, but after I killed everyone, Smythin was still there cowering and just thanked me as well.
I saved smythin by accident by starting combat before he was pushed off. I was stealthed on the upper area
I actually managed saving Corliss by attacking the gith from above, but she sped off too quick to do anything
a lot of these I knew...
I 'saved' corliss, only to hae the cutscene trigger after she had escaped, and somehow manage to still catch a bolt.
meerna is hardcoded cutscene, looking through the dialog trees for Welso (in the decompiled game files), she always dies, there is no other dialog route.
Once, I freed Brakkal after freeing the giant spiders. He thanked me for freeing him and then was instantly killed by the spiders.
This was probably in patch 4 or something though, so it might be different now
Tryed to block the hag´s hidden stairs but somehow she still got through.
Mayrinas brothers were probably just hidden by the illusion
Apparently as a Bard if you never interact with Ethel until the brothers are talking to her, you can pass an insight check and then call her out on lying and imply that she is in some form of disguise and she will vanish away leaving the brothers behind
The thing about the Hag's victims is. In a sense, only the one wearing the Mask of Regret is truly saved I would say. The way the other victims speak and act, even if they live. I think the other three were broken entirely by the hag, and just aren't really there anymore. If anything they are more like husks of who they used to be, unfortunately. I can't imagine they;d ever fully recover.
Astarion disgusted: Helping a gnome?
I saved smythin by accident a few times it gives you an inspiration lol
I knocked out her Mayrina's brothers and got the option to say, I fought your brothers but knocked them out and she just started crying again.
Would truly make it so hard.
jaysus man give poor gale a magic item
Honestly, the best outcome with the hag quest is to let her kill the brothers. Mayrina finally smartens up plus the brothers were annoyingly stupid. Thinking they can kill a hag with pitchforks and when we offered to kill the hag for free, they were like “piss off”. Wish we can have a dialogue option to blame their deaths on her.
I save the number 5 on my second run that was an hard fight to keep him alive just for a "thanks"
I thought smithy wasnt savable because i remember trying and he got pushed anyways even though the goblin didnt push him
i saved smythin a few days back.. the way i did it.. was stay hidden whilst directly looking at the goblins that normally would push him. i put the thing that stops time on. and used gale with magic missile and wyll with the scorching magic ability that is similar to magic missile but instead is fire based. and when i saved the guy. he thanked my character then ran off. the only one i am curious about if you can save him is kanon. as you say nothing in the game is impossible.
You can save Meena by attacking Nere as soon as the cutscene starts, You just have to click on the crossed swords on the bottom left.
Oh wow, nobody knew this ! How dumb the entire community is ! It doesn't work ; stop posting the most obvious things on a channel dedicated to the game
I saved Smithy on my first playthrough... for like 3 turn... I made too much noise and the whole camps started to attack us!
You can't save Meerna, by one tapping Nere, before he gets the chance either. She just disappears.
You can also save Smythin using command: Approach on him.
The brothers are dead in the well you have to pass a check to notice. Also, I believe I saved them, i played a ranger and had a unique interaction.
I tried so hard to save the gnome that gets pushed in lava no matter what she dies. If you manage to "save" her she just disappeared and her brother cries about her being dead
You can kill in one round using Haste and a surprise rouge attack.
Mayrinas brothers are dead they are just closer to the water aka they took the long way round
If kill every guard before letting Nere going out then probably he won't kill Meerna
