You actually meet the girl wearing the Mask of Regret in Act 3, during the second part of the Hag's quest. She's with the group of hag survivors. The others, regardless of you taking their mask off or not, have the same dialogue. Seems Larian only focused on Mayrina and her to be the ones you encounter later on.
Well the NPCs say that the longer they have the mask on the more they lose their mind, the woman you can save in Act 1 is a newer addition, you can find notes about someone recommending her to Auntie Ethel. It's obviously just a way to reduce the need to voice and give those characters backstory but only that girl in Act 1 and then Captain Grisly are able to be saved, of the masked victims.
You can save the two brothers by being a bard and choosing the bard unique dialogue when the brothers encounter ethel; it will trigger a fight in which you can knock them out instead of killing them before they get to the swamp. You later can tell Mayrina that you knocked the brothers out with another unique dialogue option
It's not mandatory to prevent Ethel from reaching her usual fightspot to save everyone in her lair. As seen in the video, you just need to knock out the mask bearers activating the non lethal attacks passive. Once they are out, you can move along and fight Ethel (and get her charm to boost a skill, which you can't get the other way) and once she is dead the mas bearers should be free. BEWARE: Removing the masks while they are out but Ethel is alive will kill them.
It must have been patched because I remember clearly in early September being extra careful to knock them out, killing the witch, returning there and nothing changed even after a long rest. I was disappointed that a non-lethal combat option was even in the game when later some quest characters were considered dead thought I had knocked them out instead. Maybe it was just a bug that have been corrected, which would be awesome :)
@@Biouke I did this in August in the first patch, I do remember it being slightly different and that I really really tried saving them and failed over many saves.
You can just fight her normally and save everyone by just toggle “Non-lethal” in passive and make sure you use melee to finish those masked people. It will be a hard fight because you need to be careful not to kill them. Then only loot their equipment BUT NOT THE MASK. if you pull out their mask before the Hag is not dead. They will die. Then go and kill the hag (I’m not sure you can get hag’s hair and kill her in the same time without breaking this sequence but feel free to try) After you kill the hag, go back and pull off their mask. Then long rest and come back, they will be alive and able to talk with you.
I knew Larion loves this kind of stuff, but when i played through this section i must have been a little silly goose cuz i could not figure out how to save any of them, so i just assumed this might be intended. Thanks for letting me know
It's such a pointless spell. Enemies have no problem opening any door you lock if their AI pathing requires it. There is no point in using it to set up for a fight. Larian shouldn't have put it in the game.
@@Mithcoriel the dead refuse to speak to the ones who killed them, that's why you use Disguise Self to get around it. Ethel's mad enough that she takes the opportunity to yell at you. She doesn't even wait for you to ask your questions or anything
I snuck into Ethel's house and attacked her without her starting the dialogue. She turned invisible and ran, without teleporting Mayrina into the hideout. On that occasion I could speak with her right away: the girl was not as defiant as when you save her from the cage, and she actually sounded quite thankful. Also, I snuck past the masked folks and killed Ethel (if they aren't dead when you fight her, she will summon them into her arena) without hurting them. Their dialogues are the same as in your video.
On my honormode playthrough I got the same out come as you accidently because I killed her to easy by coming in through the under dark entrance and surprising her from up above behind. I didn't try knocking out too get the masks though and it turns out it's same dialogue without any creepy whispering sound filter. Cool stuff. I was hoping you could save the others in the first cave but headless and dead hard to come back from
As mentioned earlier in the vid regarding the masks, if you didn’t come along here mind would have been gone and hollowed out. I tried on the mask and it’s designed for Ethel to warp your mind and for you to become her little toy. Their minds are to broken now with only love and undying loyalty to the hag.
You can help "raise" Mayrina's husband with the bitter divorce wand. Thank you for helping with the mask people. I will try that on my next playthrough.
Weird little trick I found today but if for some reason in the fight against Ethel you don't any multi-target spells, examine all the clones and look for the passive that gives her advantage on death saving throws. After that when she swaps clones with mayrina examine her again and look for proficiencies in her stats. Mayrina won't have any but the hag should have some in strength and two mental stats.
the only way to have a good dialog with Mayrina is when you encounter her brothers on the road with Ethil you with the brothers and she vanishes in a huff. talk to them, the run off with or without you to save their sister past the sheep/redcaps in the swamp you can find their bodies that allows you to tell Mayrina of their demise and the Hag teleports her to the cage while she's changing her mind over their deal. if you do this, she thanks you for saving her but is still remorsed by her dead husband
also there's a wand in the hag's lab that will raise the dead husband as a zombie, an then Mairina travels together with him to BG... don't know if you can actually find them tho
I didn’t use arcane lock I used ensnare from the wood shield you get from the khaga quest. Its awesome because once she is dead all her victims aren’t hostile and you can talk to them
Dude, I have NO IDEA how I did it but when I tried to pickpocket Auntie in her teahouse in my natural first run, it triggered a fight where she teleported to come after Astarion (who pick-pocketed her) outside. I got so excited, I thought I uncovered something so I reloaded to better prepare for the fight, ready to take her down in the teahouse, did everything exactly the same save bringing Shadowheart with me instead of Wyll and... nothing. It must've been some kind of glitch, but oh what a special glitch it was! It was a fun fight too; I had her down to half health with my party and then she started using the healing potions in her inventory to heal herself after running away to the front of her house. Boo. Really thought I was going to have to chase her through the swamp! So cool!
If you kill the red caps while going through the swamp. Pickpocket the necklace off of Maryrina then fight Ethel she will not teleport away and fight you in the shack.
And also, during the Hag fight, you get still dialogue options if you wait till you find Mayrina first. Depending on your choices you can still grab some approval points alongside
They give the same answers if they have the masks still on and ethel is dead, doesn't matter if you take them off or not. Same reaction unfortunately :(
Most NPCs in Act 1 show up later in Act 3. I think the reason most of the mask wearers don't show up is because they probably considered "Regret" alone to be enough. Hell, if you try to save any of the victims before you kill Ethel, they universally die. The petrified dwarf will succumb to his necrotic ailment, and the mask wearers die if you take their masks.
As for the fight to prevent her from running you can also use paralyse/sleep poison or spell so she skips her turn. Not sure about spell Silence but in mine logic it should work because she cant teleport, this need testing.
if you get the volo eye beforehand you can usually see her when she goes invisible. then you can have karlach or lae'zel hit her with the sussur greatsword. easy peasy fight before she can descend the stairs.
Fun Fact if you haven't figured it out already, you don't need to see the invisible in order to damage them. If you use an area of effect spell and some investigation, you can nail the fucker while they are invisible and it usually reverts them back (I'm assuming they get a savings throw) but regardless, they will take damage.
kill her in the cave is better, feather, big jump and wear mask to pass the trap and hag minion area. Open the portal to outside, get the rest of the party in area. 3 in battle to drop her to 20 hp, let her speak, pass check for girl and scalp, killer her with the character outside combat. Tada, you saved everyone and get the scalp.
I immediately had Gale eat her amulet since it seems to have something to do with her being so confident she won't "truly" die. Also you don't need to do all that with the masks. Their answers are the same either way.
Does the Addled Frog have any different dialog changes with this? The frog comes off being cursed by the hag, too, and it also makes me think the reinforced helmet and sword belong to the frog if not cursed.
I tried this method a while ago, and it did not work. The mask wearers were no longer hostile after I killed Ethel, but I couldn't talk to them at all either. I guess they must have fixed it. The alternative way is to sneak past the mask wearers while invisible, but then Ethel will summon them during the fight, making it harder, but if you did not kill them in that fight, they would be free once you killed the hag.
Well...in my case I some how killed Auntie Ethel when she is talking with Mayrina's brothers but not yet talked with them (aka shot her from quite far away before going to them), turns out the brothers dead but a choice of dialogue said "Auntie Ethel killed your brothers!" appeared in conversation with Mayrina then she will then trust you directly with even no checks, at least you don't have to speak with the dead as well I guess
A bit off topic but I summoned the three Ogres in the Hag's lair and they immediately tried to kill the headless corpse which took 0 damage from them no matter how hard they hit it. I had to reload the game :D
The way I did it was pretty simple that doesn't require such a roundabout way. Ethel escapes through, I fought the masked beings while I toggle non-lethal, kill the hag, optional to get the information from the hag. To me it all depends whether or not you tell Mayrina about her brothers. After you kill the hag, go back to the knocked out people and take their masks, doing it before you kill the hag will kill them because the hag is petty like that. Full rest and talk to everyone.
You can also throw spectator bottle in her home to make spectator fight the Auntie Ethel. I am not certain if they patched it, but this won't trigger her to go to her hideout since the attacker is not player but npc.
There are other victims in the main room that you can 'help' as well. A headless lady holding her head in her hands. Magic stasis keeping her from dying. Take the head and she dies. A skull looking at a mirror with a Trapped soul. I took the skull and couldn't see the ghost anymore. Unfortunately you can't help the door or the one with the EYE.
In my run I ended up getting both Mayrina and the hags hair. I thought it'd prevent me from saving the others but surprisingly the guy seeing the future was set free, but when I cured the dwarf he died near instantly.
using the option you took leaves the hag alive and since the dwarf's disease is caused by the hags magic, it would still be present when you cure the petrification thus killing him.
well what i did the first time was, i was overleveled when i visited and killed her without giving her turn then in my other playthrought i didn't know she can escape because i visited her early
it's such a shame that you can't tell Meyrina what ethel planned, even though you read her note that was laying in in her backroom. You just don't get the option even though you have the knowledge... But good to know that talk with dead fixes that problem.
You can let the hag escape. After that you can just knock out masks and kill hag then remove the masks from their bodies it also works. But I don't kill hag because she gives me permanenet upgrade
Interesting. I didnt have those dialogue options with Lorin. He kept freaking out about how we were gonna turn into Mind Flayers and ran out 🫠 this happen to anyone else ?
Yep, me too. I killed Ethel in her lair, but didn't talk to her, so Lorin was the one telling me about how I would be a mind flayer. I only got the idea to talk to the dead hag afterwards, and she didn't have the dialogue option to tell me about the mind flayer. Instead when I asked her her regret, she said "Only one. But you'll never know."
Hag can be killed in one shot, I managed to do it by sneaking in cave with Mayrina and using that thorn whip on her, which caused her to fell into pit under Mayrina cage, but dunno how to loot Aunties body after that....
Maaaan at that point in the game when I was green, I had no supploes to work with to be on my a game for this so I sided with the hag instead to save me trouble.

Same here! After the hag died, I was like "Wait, where is Mayrina? Over there? Wtf, why is she dead? Oh crap, she walked into my whirling blades."
(Act 3 spoilers later on)
Mayrina has a much better reaction to being saved if you tell her that the hag killed her brothers, as she wants to back out of the deal she has with the hag at that point. She's much more pleasant and grateful, though the bit with Connor and the wand goes the same way.
In Act 3, the one mask who manages to break free of Ethel can be found as part of a quest to save other victims of hags and will be fully recovered. She and Mayrina start a group together in the city, and there's a quest to help them out.

You later can tell Mayrina that you knocked the brothers out with another unique dialogue option
you dont need to be a bard to fight them lol
And Mayrina gets mad all the same if you knocked them out
It's not mandatory to prevent Ethel from reaching her usual fightspot to save everyone in her lair.
It's a lot harder though, I reloaded my save so many times, finally just decided to defeat her upstairs so I wouldn't have to fight them at all.
@@Biouke DId you remove the masks from their inventory after killing her, but before your long rest?
@@kevinbarnard355 Maybe ? It's been a while, I remember reloading to test different things.

Thanks for letting me know
With the new patch arcane lock method is no longer applicable
It's such a pointless spell. Enemies have no problem opening any door you lock if their AI pathing requires it. There is no point in using it to set up for a fight.
Larian shouldn't have put it in the game.
yet it still worked when i did it just days ago
It took me a few minutes to realize that Ethel recognizes you but speaks anyway just to berate you
What do you mean?
Cool stuff. I was hoping you could save the others in the first cave but headless and dead hard to come back from
How did you get the mask to get through the back door before encountering Ethel?
Me and Durge: *"I just killed them."*
This does NOT work on the current patch. Ethel does break illusion on the lock and teleports away.
I never considered to do this, so thanks for the tips :)
the only way to have a good dialog with Mayrina is
when you encounter her brothers on the road with Ethil you with the brothers and she vanishes in a huff.
talk to them, the run off with or without you to save their sister
past the sheep/redcaps in the swamp you can find their bodies
that allows you to tell Mayrina of their demise and the Hag teleports her to the cage while she's changing her mind over their deal.
if you do this, she thanks you for saving her but is still remorsed by her dead husband
also there's a wand in the hag's lab that will raise the dead husband as a zombie, an then Mairina travels together with him to BG... don't know if you can actually find them tho
So cool!
Every time I see a video about baldurs gate it looks like I didn't play the game. I played it 2 times, 300+ hours!
If you kill the red caps while going through the swamp. Pickpocket the necklace off of Maryrina then fight Ethel she will not teleport away and fight you in the shack.
i forgot to check on the trophy room victims after defeating ethal in my run.. woops.
I'll definitly try this in my next playthrough
Forgot the woman head, and soul of calim aprisioned in mirror
And also, during the Hag fight, you get still dialogue options if you wait till you find Mayrina first. Depending on your choices you can still grab some approval points alongside
They give the same answers if they have the masks still on and ethel is dead, doesn't matter if you take them off or not. Same reaction unfortunately :(
Ohhhh myyy gooood, ANOTHER play through it is!!!
Doing the lords work!
I consistently forgot there is a non-lethal way to knock people out. Rip until next playthrough.
Dont let her flee? well what about her hair? Fuck that im getting more power.
As for the fight to prevent her from running you can also use paralyse/sleep poison or spell so she skips her turn. Not sure about spell Silence but in mine logic it should work because she cant teleport, this need testing.
Oh I killed the ones with the masks with out realizing they weren't under her control anymore.
if you get the volo eye beforehand you can usually see her when she goes invisible. then you can have karlach or lae'zel hit her with the sussur greatsword. easy peasy fight before she can descend the stairs.
I don’t think this works anymore. I tried this a few times, but she’s been able to unlock the stairs and get away everytime. ;-;
You forgot the frog outside
I immediately had Gale eat her amulet since it seems to have something to do with her being so confident she won't "truly" die.
Also you don't need to do all that with the masks. Their answers are the same either way.
The dialogue from the Hag is vastly different from when I just did this about an hour ago.
They have patched a lot of stuff out. For some reason I can't get to the hag anymore through the underdark before killer her.
Well...in my case I some how killed Auntie Ethel when she is talking with Mayrina's brothers but not yet talked with them (aka shot her from quite far away before going to them), turns out the brothers dead but a choice of dialogue said "Auntie Ethel killed your brothers!" appeared in conversation with Mayrina then she will then trust you directly with even no checks, at least you don't have to speak with the dead as well I guess
what I did was to avoid the masks by using stealth, quite difficult, and then she summoned them but I still fought her ignoring them all.
I snuck out the back door first time around without a fight. Then I had an easier way in for when I was actually ready for the fight.
I don't think put arcane lock on the stairs works anymore. Tried it recently and she went down the stairs like I hadn't done anything.
I got it to work today, you got to damage her, somehow, before her turn and use arcane lock
I had no idea! Thanks!
I have knocked them down instead of killed them, and after too many long rests, them remain knocked down, and never have been awakened.
A bit off topic but I summoned the three Ogres in the Hag's lair and they immediately tried to kill the headless corpse which took 0 damage from them no matter how hard they hit it. I had to reload the game :D
Hags are Archfey so when she died she just went to the Feywilds, so she will be back at some point just not in game.
shes already back when you reach baldurs gate
Neat!
But if you kill the Hag before she teleports. You do not get a perma + 1 to what ever your main str, dex int, wis, cha.
It is the price you pay. Killing her before she teleports avoids a difficult fight but you miss out on the stat boost.

Unfortunately you can't help the door or the one with the EYE.
Well you "help" the door by killing Ethel and allowing it to die finally.
It's strange that Lorin was set free then. What did he say when he was free?
I guess im not a good savior lol. I didn’t even notice the others, got to mayrina and was like “I killed your brothers, you can leave now”

then in my other playthrought i didn't know she can escape because i visited her early
You get the dialogue from the last four even if they have the mask.
The musical sting at 2:10 sounds like a slipknot song is about to start.
Is this new? I've non-lethaled them before and removing the mask killed them.
Try to only take them off after the hag is dead
Did you kill the hag BEFORE you removed the masks?
U gotta kill the hag before removing the masks
You have to kill hag first
It have been added under patch 4, but only works if you actually kill the hag, not if you make a deal with her and get the +1 stat bonus
it's such a shame that you can't tell Meyrina what ethel planned, even though you read her note that was laying in in her backroom. You just don't get the option even though you have the knowledge... But good to know that talk with dead fixes that problem.
Those three masked ones there aren't anymore saved than before you knocked them unconscious and took their masks, just FYI.
I brought home dude back from being petrified with an oil and he died because auntie Ethel was still alive!!!
Very interesting video
I used protection from good and evil on the priest masked one and got one extra line of dialogue
saddest part of this is Mayrina's brothers.
You can let the hag escape. After that you can just knock out masks and kill hag then remove the masks from their bodies it also works. But I don't kill hag because she gives me permanenet upgrade
So I have to be a necromancer to make her talk from the dead

Yep, me too. I killed Ethel in her lair, but didn't talk to her, so Lorin was the one telling me about how I would be a mind flayer. I only got the idea to talk to the dead hag afterwards, and she didn't have the dialogue option to tell me about the mind flayer. Instead when I asked her her regret, she said "Only one.
