Thanks for a concise explanation of the technique! I was able to re-create this in Blender with a Solidify-Subdivision(Simple)-Subdivision modifier stack. Modifying the Subdivision(Simple) is the equivalent of changing FlatSubdivision in ZBrush. I renamed the modifier to make it easy to identify. Then it's just using regular mesh edit tools to build up your shape like in the video.
Cheers! I actually got inspired by a youtube video explaining this exact method for blender. The cool thing is that you can now take that mesh from Zbrush and just slap the modifiers on top to get the same result.
This video is insanely helpful. I make costumes and props, and for the longest time have been using fusion 360 for the defined hardsurface parametric aspects (to assure parts fit exactly how I want), and loosely a mix of its sculpt mode then exporting into zbrush to clean up the surfaces. I've been meaning to transfer the sculpt/form portion of my workflow entirely to zbrush for quite some time now but most guides are either super obtuse, don't give examples of how to use their workflow, or don't even have anything to do with zbrush and are trying to convert you to blender. Already have this video saved, definitely gonna check out your other stuff, and when I can definitely gonna get that Cyborg Bust course. Literally looks like just the type of stuff I need!
Thank you for this method. It's very useful! 😃 Could you help me in one moment? When I extrude the edge by zmodeler, it makes crease every time, so the intersection turns very hard, not as in your video. How not to do creases every time? UPD: I found the answer: to uncrease the base shape, so the other exstrusion is without creases.
Hey! I saw your coment in Zero Art´s video, this is amaaazing ! Thank you very much for this killer workflow, same as you I was tend to do all in bruteforce, and then remesh, clean and etc but I was wondering how to have a better, clean and controlled workflow, without switching to other soft, and I know Zmodeller is super powerfull. Thanks for doing this videos!! Im gonna take your course soon!! I also know that you mentioned that you come from more organic sculpting (as me) an develop the best ways for doing HS so I feel really connected.
I'm glad to hear from someone with the same experience. :) It's hard to switch workflows when you get so used to one, but it's crucial to break out of it once in a while and try something new.
One quick question, this seems to be a great method for planar connected surface, but in case of wanting to do quiick round shapes (like combed shell for a headgear - helmet) what would you recomend, ZModeller, quick dynamesh - bruteforce?? Because in this case each loop is gonna act as support loop so It would appear "faceted".
I'm about to experiment with this. My intuition would be to apply the subdiv and use smoothing or polish on areas that need to be round or soft surfaces.
Hey! The course is narrated step-by-step, but I won't go over the Zbrush UI or basics. If you are completely new to Zbrush, you can watch my free Beginner Hard Surface Course. Link in Description.
Thank you for your video always. I always learn from your video:) Is there a way to control each edge's crease level saparately in Zmodeler? 3ds max can adjust crease level for each edge but in zmodeler, i think it has common crease level in only one subtool. So sometimes, if I want more sharp or less sharp in some edge of different angle, I can't use crease level or i have to use just sculpting it for different sharpness. Is it possible?
This is something I was wondering about as well. I don't think there is a straightforward way to give multiple edges within one subtool different creasing levels. The only thing that comes to my mind is smoothing some of the edges that you want to have less creasing. I might make another video on that in the future.
How often do concept artists use z brush specifically for character design. I'm asking cause I'm in my final 2 years of concept art university and my lecturers advised I should start working on my own work style now. But before I invest alot of time on z brush, I wanna know how common it is used for character design specifically. Cause when I search on artstation it's mainly 2d based.
It depends. 2D still has it's place and many studios want to see 2D art, but 3D is definitely on the rise for concept art. I know many concept artists who only know 3d and clients get a lot of value out of it since they already get a some what finished asset they can work with. My advice would be to focus on the fundamentals in 2D and start 3D as soon as you feel compftable concentrating more on the technical side of things. But definitely learn 3D it's more and more common nowadays. If you want to do Character Design, Zbrush is probably the way to go.
It absolutely is! The only thing you need are 2 Subdivision modifiers on top of each other and switching the one above from catmull-clar to simple. on top you can add the solidify modifier ;)
It's where I got the inspiration from. There you have even more control over the mesh, but I always enjoy to see if I can make it work in Zbrush where most of my work happens :)

thank you so so much, this has saved me from getting overwhelmed with a mech project im working on ❤️❤️❤️
NO WAY---GET OUTTA HERE! This is awesome! Thank you for sharing!!!
Oh wow, it’s a neat trick. Immediately tried it on blender and it worked there too.
This is a god tier method, i think you just solved my entire problem with designing sci-fi models 🙏🙏🙏

Thank you so much! It sure has a lot of hidden gems and features, and even I find new ways of working in it after years spended with this software :D
Cool! Thank you!
Insane workflow cant wait to try this❤
Brilliant, thank you.
Thak you a lot! That is very useful!
AMAZING!! Georg congrats!!
Good job man, this feature helped a lot last years. you rock!

DUDE!!!!!!!
is your macro also in your 2022 UI ?
Unfortunately, it's not since I just made it recently.
Did this tool come to zbrush for the iPad as well??
no
Haven't looked into this yet. My iPad is pretty old haha
is this possible on Blender as well ?
