I really like your artstation site. Also the eyes on your dragon hunter look sooooo good! S tier eyes for sure and they look better than almost any eyes I've seen including the Metahuman demo. You are very talented!
This was insanely good! I'm just starting to get into Blender and I want to get to a point where I can make my own animated short films. This was wild! What an inspiration!
J, You don't know how excited this video has gotten me. 1 year ago I flunked out of 3d art school after YEARS of learning just to land a dead end job. this video really resparked the love I had for 3d art years ago and I'm gonna start making something not unlike this now. Thank you!
I can really relate to and appreciate what you said at the end of the video. I don't even have average skills and experience in all the 3D stuff we are trying to achieve. Learning and practicing new things doesn't take much time initially, but when you attempt to apply what you've learned before with a few extra steps or when you learn and use more difficult techniques, you might find it extremely challenging to make progress. I always remind myself that I can do other things. This helps me feel motivated to improve in what I'm doing. If it takes a long time, it takes a long time.
This video was incredibly inspiring, thanks. As a beginner artist who started learning Blender about two years ago and has sunk most of that time on a single project, sometimes I feel like I'm too slow and it's like I'm not cut for working as a 3D artist. Seeing that even pros can take a while to finish their personal projects puts me at ease. All the best to you J, keep on making incredible art!
Your journey is impressive! I remember been watching a eye tutorial in zbrush from you back in 2016~2017. I'm not practicing anymore but i keep watching your incredible works. Very well done!
Hell yeah, love these character breakdowns, cool to see your take on different types of characters and other software packages Hope youre doing well J!
J you are a big inspiration to me. You make me feel like getting a job in the game industry isn't an impossible dream. I just started watching you recently but now I sculpt everyday while I play your videos on my other monitor. I just want to say thank you for giving me hope again and for starting this channel 13 years.
It's evident that you've not only honed your skills but also pushed the boundaries of your creativity in this project. What aspect of creating the Dragon Hunter character challenged you the most, and how did you overcome that challenge?
It was all challenging. The scope and time it took may be the biggest. Being determined to not give up and keep going is the only way to get to the end
it is already perfect. but if u wanted to go in just a little bit further(as u did like 200 times) u could make some visible scratches on the sword or maybe adding dents in the blade and for the fire to be more realistic u could make the sword's steel glow red from the head a bit. the hands looked a bit flat I don't know why...
not even a 3d artist but i love your work and the style of videos you make. so inspiring and motivating to watch you work through the struggles of the workflow, i hope you're doing well and i hope we have many more videos to look forward to! :D
Fellow, high respect for your efforts! I am myself just staring in Blender making a character I've long dreamed about, and your advice to take time and have patience during the process cannot be overstated. Thanks for being here, love your art!
You did a great job on the suit and looks very nice, the only thing to improve uppon is the anatomy of the face a bit and shaders for it and for the eyes, for blender there is an addon to make realistic eyes and you can use that if you want, great work overall
Awesome, I wouldn't be able to do that in 10 years. Nevertheless, a small criticism: since the flames move, the character also has to move a little, for example you should see that he is breathing.
mostly we wanna lower the problem as much as possible. is the detail on cloth or the detail on skin full body which one more annouy? from begin sculpting to baking it. then throw to Render.
every single time i watch your new uploaded video i learn something new; and i can say your existance makes this world a better place to live, which this is exactly the pupose of the entire living. TYSM
Bro, when you do something too much, it becomes second nature, and not even you might understand the true impact you have on people with your work and videos. Inspirational and motivational stuff. 🔥 🔥 🔥
When in blender. Press Command/control + comma. This will let you go to the add-on panel. Then search “node” and enable a default addon called “node wrangler” it lets you add texture mapping and texture coordinate nodes in a key press (control T). I saw you were doing this manually many times and felt sorry for you
Dude, you truly are an inspiration for me when it comes to personal projects. I, and probably a lot of us, get sucked into the daily grind and forget to have fun with our own work. This piece turned out SUPER good too! And, you learned so many new tools in the process! We should all take note! Can't wait to see the next one!
Thanks. It was overall a good experience and I prefer the shading and rendering workflow in blender. I’m still too new to UVs and modeling in blender so that is still clunky. Biggest thing is hair. XGen is still way better than the current blender workflow but the future of blender is brighter than Maya’s
If I may request or ask, eyeballs and how too make them specifically within blender is holding me back from my models. Mostly for animating. 3d music videos is what I’m after. and by the way what a master piece of a dragon hunter model holy smokes 100% quality!
Cool project, I was just myself recently experimenting with using high poly objects with no UV's and just sending the powlypaint straight to Blender instead of using Substance or Marmoset for textures. I think the poly painting tools are vastly overlooked and I'd definitely like to see more of that !
okay epic project epic character and amazing commentary i learnt quite a bit! Im just starting out using blender for my own workflow and its really amazing what you can do with it! Okay but hot take tho you've essentially made Alt Reality Hiccup and i cant unsee it. Thanks for making such an amazing and informative video it truly inspired me! especially when you talked abt telling a story through your characters i always viewed character art and design as such each character has their story to tell in their design just gotta be real nerdy abt it.
I'm a pretty big time Maya user, and I'm moving to Blender. I'm not really into rendering but I do work on game stuff. The dream for me though is having my whole pipeline in Houdini.
Great stuff! Would you ever consider modeling environments for a video? I'd be very interested to see your approach to something like that and how all of your experience would carry over.
You can revisit this work and rerender it with new colorspace, it's way better with one click. Also, there are videos on render time optimisation in blender and a free render farm sheepit, which you can use by leaving your pc rendering and then using collected points to render your projects.
Great work! However, I think his face would look better if you had more subsurface scattering. I feel that the skin has fully opaque paint or wax feeling on the final renders.
Impressive as always! That said, not sure if you've seen Baldur's Gate 3, but in the hot environments, you can see the sweat on the characters faces, being so close to the flaming sword, I wonder if that might add some additional detail that could give a more interesting render. Also the gauntlet material looks a bit off or something, perhaps its due to how clean it is verses the hand/face which are much dirtier, maybe adding bits of dirt and/or dents could help sell it a bit more.
hey JHill, any chance you can make a video on painting skin weights? Its supposed to be simple but I hate it and don't know which software is best to do it.
Thank you for making this awesome content! You're videos are very helpful to me as I continue to work on my first character artist portfolio. Also thanks for sharing your zbrush layout it has been super helpful too!
god this was amazing. can clearly see hints of jon snow and aragorn vibes in him. and am i wrong in saying that he also kinda looks like you? kinda like a younger brother of J.hill?? irrespective, great final render!
took me 2 years to finally finish this project the least you could do is check it out artstation.com/artwork/49PVA8
thanks for the love
the POGARM has paid off! flippin amazing J!
The project is amazing, i love the result ! Are you going to switch definitively to Blender ? Thank you for inspiring me ;)
I really like your artstation site. Also the eyes on your dragon hunter look sooooo good! S tier eyes for sure and they look better than almost any eyes I've seen including the Metahuman demo. You are very talented!
Dragon Hunter World Iceborne?
This is awesome! Thank You!
Would love to see try to sculpt in Blender
This was insanely good! I'm just starting to get into Blender and I want to get to a point where I can make my own animated short films. This was wild! What an inspiration!
Whats your art or software experience?
I'd never expected I'd see the day Blender stands so fiercely agaisnt Maya, and I'm so happy I never gave up on this wonderful software
J, You don't know how excited this video has gotten me. 1 year ago I flunked out of 3d art school after YEARS of learning just to land a dead end job. this video really resparked the love I had for 3d art years ago and I'm gonna start making something not unlike this now.

let's go!
It's refreshing seeing how you go about creating such a complex character. The details are absolutely gorgeous. Very inspiring!
Thank you so much!
I can really relate to and appreciate what you said at the end of the video. I don't even have average skills and experience in all the 3D stuff we are trying to achieve. Now that's some serious artistic motivation. Hope it brings you more opportunity brother
worked on it for 2 years... this is absolute mood XD (also, puts dragon on chest... yes, drake knight rises!)
That shot of you after exporting out all the decimated models. I felt that. Amazing work J! Always a treat to watch your tutorials 💙
:) thank you glad you liked it
Amazing! Great work!
I'm hoping to see more Blender related content on your channel. Especially some actual sculpting
inspirational.. @26:30 totally agree and loved what u said..
Very impressive! That's true passion to your craft
Thank you

Hey, thanks! I appreciate that and happy you still enjoy my videos. you've been a sub for 7 years. thank you for that ❤️
I actually prefer the first hair style you showed. Overall this character looks super badass :)
that's is insane work and there is still a lot to put in it, 3d realistc art is crazy
Hell yeah, love these character breakdowns, cool to see your take on different types of characters and other software packages Hope youre doing well J!
thank you man! things are going good hope you're well too
@@artofjhill Yeah man not too bad! Hopefully share some work with you soon

The combinations of fabrics and materials in the costumes were fantastic, showcasing excellent costume design.
I got no words man just blown away with your art🙌🙌🙌
I was waiting for your new vid to come out and this one
🔥
Thank you! glad you liked it

Tysm!
Tip: Use sub surface scattering to make the skin look real, it looks like it is made of plastic now.
Everything else is dope though;)
The eyes coulda been blinking. Fantastic work regardless.
Awesome video, also thanks for that last part, as someone with a portfolio full of wips and abandoned projects, I get what you're trying to say 😂😅
Incredible work, man! Great advice and perspective at the end too. Very cool.
Thank you. Glad you liked it

The quality of this video and the artwork is so high it is hard to compete!

I didn't know render farms were soooo expensive, that's wild. Great work!
tbh mostly my fault for messing up settings and the GPUs failing to render my scene. so I paid a lot for nothing. don't be like me
@@artofjhillahh I see, thanks for the info!
Such an awesome video and awesome detailed character. Thanks for sharing your process as always, super helpful
Glad you enjoyed it!
Oh my! You are a true artist.
Welcome to Blender my friend.....................now I hope you'll create a character from start to finish only using Blender. AWESOME work as usual.
I’ll keep using Zbrush until it’s not the fastest :)
Fkin awesome! Would be great if you talk a bit about your thoughts on the diferences and pros/cons with your normal workflow in maya.
Thanks. It was overall a good experience and I prefer the shading and rendering workflow in blender. I’m still too new to UVs and modeling in blender so that is still clunky. Biggest thing is hair. I will reach this level of skill one day!
Would love to see you take a look at blender's sculpting tools, just for fun lol.
I’ve thought about too. Just so many things I also want to do that I end up trying instead
