Dream Scenario is one of the best of the year. What a unique concept that's never been shown before tackling issues of cancel culture, fame, social boycott, isolation and discrimination.
@@ImpressionBlend Just watched this movie yesterday and I started having weird nightmares while sleeping. This movie definitely impacted me on a deeper level 🤯
Godzilla Minus One is so good! Probably my favorite theater experience of the year with that really intense sound design and especially atomic breath. Just absolutely stunned into silence!!! Some of my favorite underrated/under-talked-about films of the year: Influencer, Fair Play, Are You There God It's Me Margaret, Bottoms, They Cloned Tyrone, Missing, and Saw X (I'm serious).
I dissed your style of movie reviewing a while back, but I was wrong. You also get massive respect for having Blackberry and Godzilla Minus One on this list. You're definitely a cinephile. Best wishes to you, and may you get to 100K subscribers.
Every film you recommended here is now on my watch list. The details you share reflect an intelligence and love of cinema, not just movies. Happy, happy 2024!
Just watched The night of the 12th and it was great! Thank you for your recommendations for underrated movies… I don’t think I would have heard about movies like this or the vast of night if not for your videos. And everything that I have watched from your lists have been gems! Thanks for doing what you do! 🙏🏽🙏🏽
Interesting choices! Having seen Beyond the Sea, Dream Scenario and Blackberry, I agree with your selection, and am looking forward to watching the rest of the films you picked!
I really enjoyed the Irish language film, “An Cailín Ciúin”-“The Quiet Girl”-which I don’t think received the theatre distribution it deserved when it was released in Canada and the US back in March. I’m lucky enough to have an independent cinema near me, where I was able to see this beautiful, touching, and most memorable film about childhood, family, love and loss, and the effects of grief on our lives. It’s a bittersweet film that ends on a note of sadness, but also with a promise of hope, and it completely bowled me over emotionally the first time I saw it. I loved “The Quiet Girl” so much, I went back to see it three more times. I can’t remember the last time a film affected me so deeply. It should have won the Oscar for Best Foreign Film instead of losing out to “All Quiet on the Western Front” which, as good a film as it is, simply doesn’t measure up to “The Quiet Girl”. I think about this film every day.
Great picks. I'll have to catch up on the ones I haven't seen. One I want to throw out there is technically only a 2023 release because of NYFF, but I'm counting it. Bertrand Bonello's "The Beast." A French film starring Léa Seydoux and George MacKay. Set in 2044, where emotion is a threat to artificial intelligence, humans undergo a procedure to have all emotion erased by eliminating deep-rooted connections to past lives. So, the film takes place in 1910, 2014, and 2044 as a relationship between these two people is dissected through each period. Thanks for all the great content in 2023, Marianna, and have a great 2024.
Thank you! Happy New Year! I am DYING to see "The Beast", it looks like the kind of movie I would love, so definitely something I look forward to next year.
I always love seeing these type of lists from you. Really good picks! And I appreciate the love for The Iron Claw. Personally it was my favorite movie of 2023. Happy new year to you! ❤
Hi, Thank you for this list. I am always surfing the net hunting for these kinds of films. It's great that people like you help give a louder voice to smaller under the radar films that might go unnoticed. I'm looking forward to watching your recommendation. Thanks
My top three underrated were Theater Camp, Full Time and Sisu. I concur on your takes on Godzilla Minus One and Dream Scenario. Keep up the great work!❤
I've seen most of the films on your list and completely agree. I am going to make a point to see the remaining films. Some of my favorites from the Philadelphia Film Festival last October: Goodbye Julia, The Promised Land, The Teacher's Lounge, Green Border, Fallen Leaves, American Fiction, and The Old Oak.
Totally agree with "Beyond the Sea". Smart to categorized it as a movie. A very haunting conclusion and went is a added direction I did not think it would have.
AWESOME video. Lots now added to my watchlist, and I agree wholeheartedly with the two I’ve seen: ‘Blackberry’ and your EXCELLENT #1 pick. Makes me want to rewatch it right now. Love your videos as always, and can’t wait for your Top 10 of the year
WHERE WAS THIS LADY, that was not in my youtube list or in my life??? Amazing list. Seen almost every movie. Going after the ones that I left in the way!
As the youngest of 5 brothers, I felt Chris von Erich's exclusion from The Iron Claw was a personal pet peeve. But still, a very intense and emotional drama.
Apparently they took him out because they felt that would just be too tragic. I don't know if I fully agree with that being a reason to remove him, but I get it.
Absolutely incredible video Marrianna. Really enjoyed this one. Awesome list. I definitely need to check out Godzilla Minus One. I’ve heard it’s absolutely amazing. Happy new year as well. Hope you have a great 2024.🥳👍
Some here that I haven't heard of, I'll add to the list. Thanks! Some underrated films that I feel no one really talked about: True Spirit The true story about Jessica Watson who, at the age of 16, became the youngest person to sail solo around the world. But underneath it's really a celebration of nature and family. Linoleum A film about dreaming big and realising what life really is about. Living Based on a 1952 Japanese film, about a man coming to terms with the fact that being alive doesn't mean living. No One Will Save You A sci-fi horror that really surprised me with it's constant close encounters and almost no dialog at all. Pinball: The Man Who Saved the Game One of the most surprising films of the year for me, filmed as a mockumentary, it's funny, heartfelt, eyeopening and refreshingly honest.
Glad I've seen some of your previous lists so I know you have pretty good taste. The only "film" I've seen on this list was the Black Mirror episode- have we dumbed it down that far? I've seen every episode of Black Mirror and I'm still waiting for them ever to really fully flesh out a concept. It's the New Years Eve of television- a lot of planning and always a dissappointing party.
I've watched a good number of 2023 best of lists and this one is by far the best...so refreshing to see a list full or foreign films and minus the comic book movies...
My best friend and I wanted to see the Iron Claw so badly but my country decided to take it out of cinemas the weekend we wanted to see it! Luckily I’m travelling to the UK next week and it’s still in cinemas there so fingers crossed I can catch a showing. Also, I just stumbled into your channel and it’s definitely one I’ll return to,.
Been recommended Blackberry and The Iron Claw plenty, so I'll happily check them out. Godzilla Minus One was the last movie I saw in the theatre this year, surprised it came to my local, definitely one of my favourite movies this year, though I still want to see Past Lives and Anatomy of a Fall.
All of Us Strangers is another I've been wanting to see but isn't available yet where i live! You have me even more excited for it now. I did see Dream Scenario in theaters though and loved
Thank you so much for the list! I needed something like this for today which I will be spending watching and catching up on movies :) Will watch the Black Mirror episode, which I had disregarded since so many people disliked this most recent season and it put me off. Watched Emily yesterday and I fully agree -- such a powerful and engrossing movie. One of my favorites this year!
Speaking of Black Mirror my favorite film length piece in the series was White Christmas with Jon Hamm. So bleak and yet felt real close to reality. I think it was season two, so not 2023. I like best feature length Black Mirrors getting season-end awards consideration. Great show, watched all seasons, all episodes this year. Would love more seasons
The biggest hidden gem and personal favourite movie of the year for me was Linoleum. Have added The Five Devils and The Beasts to my watchlist. Thanks for the recommendations
Great list! A few of those films I haven’t seen and I will definitely watch. Other films I feel that you may not have seen and you should check out are ‘Monica’, ‘Ferrari’, ‘Passages’, ‘Raging Grace’, and ‘Cat Person’! Amazing underrated films! 🎉
Check out Biosphere with Mark Duplass and Sterling K. Brown (and no one else). Simple concept (Two men trying to survive in the titular Biosphere after a cataclysmic event) that turns on its ear about midway through. Good, quiet movie, with great performances by the two leads.
I’m finishing the year reading John Truby’s Anatomy of Genre (after enjoying Anatomy of Story) there is so much to take in for both film study and StoryCraft studies. I’m LOVING Marianna’s video drops on my subscription timeline right next to Quotidian Writer.
I wanted to love "Beyond the Sea", but it got a little tedious. I know that is kind of the point, but I lost interest when the writers introduced "why" David wanted to stay. It is such a rote explanation. I would have liked it more if he just fell in love with being alive and free and reaching a point where, after years of giving up on life, he did not want to give that back. That said, I need to add SO many of the movies you named to my "must-watch" list. Thank you so much for this list, Mariana. I hope you have a wonderful 2024!
I’d like to include “Fallen Leaves” a romantic gem from Finland, and “Fremont”, a beautiful moving tale about an Afghan immigrant trying to make the US her new home.
My top under the radar films this year were Return to Seoul and Riceboy Sleeps. Combined with Past Lives, they made for one heck of an emotional Korean trilogy of sorts. Riceboy Sleeps has one of the strongest emotional gut punches I’ve encountered in a long time. All three movies require tissues. Happy new year from Canada!
Riceboy Sleeps works on so many levels, I think it hits particularly hard for Asian males, but has a lot to say about masculinity in general, and being an outsider in a place you can never be anything else.
It's frustrating that a lot of movies get released later around the world, I usually don't want to see them at that point. Why is it still like that in this day and age? My number one underrated movie, is also my number one movie of 2023, Godzilla Minus One. Another underrated movie is Sick Of Myself.
When Evil Lurks is definitely an underrated/obscure movie but considering it's a foreign/Latin American movie I'm not surprised. Then there's The Sound of Freedom which was phenomenal. Disturbing as hell but gripping at the same time.
Still waiting to see Anatomy of a Fall and The Zone of Interest but there should be more talk about Society of the Snow. An extraordinary film about this horrifying story, also based on a true story.
I'd love to watch Dream Scenario but is not here yet. I'm adding The Five Devils to my list now. 😊 I have to disagree on Beyond the Sea, though. I really enjoyed it BUT there was a massive plot hole that I just couldn't get past.
There's a really charming film called "I like Movies", set in a VHS rental shop, that came out last year. Its fantastic. A witty and poignant film that's unfortunately gone under the radar of most reviewers.
I really want every to watch Honk for Jesus, Save Your Soul, I went in last minute because the movie I was trying to see wasn't covered with my Regal unlimited, I was expecting a raunchy gross comedy and I was so shocked, It's a really great film and I want people to watch it. I also really want to see Dream Scenario and The Iron Claw
@@ImpressionBlend I thought it was a deliberate slow burn, twisted thriller that oozed resentment and pain. Well written and acted. The plot twist was shocking. I loved it.
Excellent list, but I don't agree that Iron Claw, Godzilla and Dream Scenario are underrated. They are rated and praised high enough, even if they won't win awards.
Thank you! I include movies on lists like this that aren’t getting the viewership they deserve, so while they may be rated high by people who have seen them they are still under-appreciated from the audience size perspective.
I’m still mesmerized by how average the reviews for Beau is Afraid were. This stunning masterpiece alone made me loose a lot of interest towards movie critic platforms..
My most underrated films of the year are “Monica” “Eileen” “Showing Up” “Of An Age” “The Creator” “Afire” “Sanctuary” “Gran Turismo” and now “Ferrari”
Dream Scenario is one of the best of the year. What a unique concept that's never been shown before tackling issues of cancel culture, fame, social boycott, isolation and discrimination.
Genuinely shocked it didn't get "picked up" by movie fans and taken to wider popularity. The movie has everything and it's so funny as well.
@@ImpressionBlend Just watched this movie yesterday and I started having weird nightmares while sleeping. This movie definitely impacted me on a deeper level 🤯
Absolutely loved Dream Scenario. It's my favorite A24 film of 2023
It was my second favorite of the year after Maestro and I’m still debating which of the two is actually my favorite.
@@ImpressionBlendagreed 😊
Godzilla Minus One is so good! Probably my favorite theater experience of the year with that really intense sound design and especially atomic breath. Just absolutely stunned into silence!!!
Some of my favorite underrated/under-talked-about films of the year: Influencer, Fair Play, Are You There God It's Me Margaret, Bottoms, They Cloned Tyrone, Missing, and Saw X (I'm serious).
Fair play was pretty solid. I like Finestkind which just came out two weeks ago on paramount
Beyond The Sea is BRILLIANT! I'm so glad you put it at number 1. I fee like people are not giving it enough credit. Amazing list as always!
This is the most underrated movie channel on youtube. Hope you get all the success you deserve. Great list as always🙏

Great list of under rated gems, better than most main stream contenders, especially Blackberry.

I wanted to love "Beyond the Sea", but it got a little tedious. I know that is kind of the point, but I lost interest when the writers introduced "why" David wanted to stay. It is such a rote explanation. I would have liked it more if he just fell in love with being alive and free and reaching a point where, after years of giving up on life, he did not want to give that back.

gem from Finland, and “Fremont”, a beautiful moving tale about an Afghan immigrant trying to make the US her new home.
