Things Will Be Different. Just watched this, it is a newer movie. One of the more original time travel-esque films. It is low on explanations on the larger world around the characters, so be prepared for that. I'd say for me it was like a poor mans Primer. Primer being the greatest indie time travel movie ever made. I loved most of this list, except I despise Ad Astra with my whole self. Another Earth and Aniara were such surprisingly great films. I came to love Marling after that film, and to love and hate the OA. I didn't find Aniara hard to watch, I think because I could easily live that way, I am good with both solitude and monotony.
Unknown film “Timequest” focuses on how the timeline deviated when a time traveler saved Kennedy. Time Crimes is great. Let the Right One In and The Habit are excellent vampire movies. Europa Report is a lost chapter from 2001: A space Oddessy. Another version of you is romantic multiverse story. Spring is the only horror romance that is actually both.
GATTACA. Nobody talks about that movie anymore. That's quite a shame because it's a very deep and thought provoking movie about mankind and the manipulation of genetics. Also Dark City is one of my favorites ever.
I was in college back in 2004 and up very late watching something on TBS, TNT or USA. When it was over, I didn't change the channel. A movie came on and I was hooked before the opening narration was even over. That night, Dark City became one of my favorite films.
Really good list with a couple I havent seen, and hope to after your well-deserved enthusiasm for one of my favourite films (with one of the great final scenes) Dark City!! Add to your low budget well-worth-seeing list: "The Vast of Night" was a revelation, "Cronicle", "Freaks", (2018), a real surprise, and "The Innocents", (2021), a Swedish, low budget, unique stunner. Has a cast of children (which usually causes me to run the other way) that are absolutely amazing, and tension that grabs and doesnt let go!!!
Perhaps inconsistency is the problem here. The movie does not states what it wants to be and can leave the audience lost. And one thing that I remember was that the EVA scene near the end was really bad with unrealistic physics that made me cringe. Maybe I might give it a second chance.
Great list, Marianna! The only sci-fi films I haven't seen in your list are Perfect Sense, Never Let Me Go and Aniara. 5 of them are actually in my physical media collection: Monsters, Color Out of Space, Ad Astra, Sunshine and Dark City.
Omg I'm so happy to see Another Earth on this list! I loved that move and absolutely adore Brit Marling too! The OA was so good and I was so sad to see Netflix cancel it after 2 seasons.
I loved this video. Great recommendations. You were careful not to spoil the plots which I deeply appreciate. You have instantly earned a loyal follower. I’ve seen Time Crimes and Ad Astra and agree completely with you, which makes me trust your other recommendations. I also thought your warnings about Aniara were perfect. It’s good Sci-Fi but very dark!
I really enjoyed Monsters. Like you say, it wasn't at all what I expected and I was pleasantly surprised. It's hard to find people who have actually seen it.
I love your underrated list for the gems they contain. I’m happy to have seen half of these and some others on my to watch list. Another Earth is a wonderful moving film I have been telling my friends about for years. Gladly it recently became available on MAX.
Great list of recommendations! Definitely gonna have to check some of these out, but was so glad to see you recommend Sunshine! You are absolutely right, not enough people talk about that movie! So good!
Ad Astra is such a good film. I was sure, that after inevitable box office failure it would become a cult classic. But it seems it's on the way to become forgotten, which is a shame. My recommendation for an underrated sf movie would be Pandorum - a space horror with Ben Foster, Dennis Quaid and Antje Traue.
I'm glad that you mentioned Monsters. I've recommended this movie often to my friends with no luck. I loved the ending of it. I've seen most of these and Dark City is my favorite of them.
As a big fan of Alex Garland since 28 Days Later and even a bigger fan of Never Let Me Go (absolutely beautiful and emotionally devastating, best movie of 2010) I approve this list soo much! (and I also love all of the rest I've seen - still need to see Perfect Sense and Aniara). Some other underrated sci-fi: Frequency, Cypher (from the director of Cube) and The Last Days (Los ultimos dias in original, extremely original Spanish apocalypse movie).
I don't have time to rewatch many films, so I know one really hits with me when I can vividly remember it almost fifteen years later. Never Let Me Go was one of those films. I think it hit as hard as it did because I went into it completely blind. Kudos for giving a description of the film without saying what it's actually about. I think my moment of realization was one reason that film has stuck with me in a way I doubt I will ever forget.
Well, Another Earth is such a masterpiece. And, I appreciate you tried not to spoil too much, but for those who haven't seen it yet, as you hinted, the main concept of the "trip to meet your alter ego" is just a minor part of a wonderful and intimate story. Not to mention the incredible cinematographic rendition of it with the most ridiculous budget ever. 😉
Thelma (Norway) Save Ourselves! Before We Vanish (Japan) France: Animal Kingdom Mars Express Just A Breath Away River (Japan) Perfect Sense - Max Richter score. Lovely ending. No Blu-ray available in US :-(
I watched Save Yourselves! (I assume that's the one you meant, and your title is a bit more accurate) a few nights ago and enjoyed it. I think, quite often, it helps not to have preconceptions or expectations. I wasn't familiar with Perfect Sense, but, hey, Ewan McGregor and Eva Green (well, Evan Green! especially!), AND a Max Richter score? I need to see this. Thanks.
Very cool video! I've seen 7 of the 10 (I'll fill in the blanks later), though some I only vaguely remember. The most notable is Dark City, which I've seen many times. It was a must-have during my DVD collecting days, with one really cool aspect the commentary track from Roger Ebert. He really, really loved that movie, and hearing his commentary made me appreciate it even more.
Great list! I’d seen 3 of them and definitely agree with you. Some I’ve rewatched lately are _Altered States, Coherence, The Vast of Night, Cronicle, Source Code,_ and _Prospect._
Delighted that you mentioned DARK CITY as I loved that film. Definitely underrated, and I think it just got overshadowed by the behemoth that was The Matrix when it came out.My only real gripe with it was that I didn't like Keifer Sutherlands performance in it (a bit over the top for my tastes). The sci fi film I'll always recommend, (and don't understand how it gets overlooked these days) is GATTACA. Such a great exploration of genetic manipulation and the societal effects of those choices. Another one think is underrated, is 2010. Again, just a really solid sci-fi story, with a great cast. But of course it gets forgotten for not being another 2001: A space odyssey. And yet, since it is a more conventionally told story, it is a good easy watch.
14:56 I also liked 'Ad Astra' and the effects during the moon buggy chase sequence (as well as other sequences) were very impressive and very clean; almost reminiscent of those of '2001: A Space Odyssey' back in 1968. In fact, it was the first 4K/Blu-ray/digital copy combo pack I ever bought over three years ago (definitely the first 4K I ever bought) since it was only $14.99 (Canadian dollars) at a time when most 4Ks were $25 or more. :)
VERY weirdly enough, a poll on another UA-camr I follow asked for sci-fi nominations today, and I decided to only nominate Time Travel film, including Timecrimes. It’s a great movie!
@@robertcrawford1791 Predestination is the most effed up time travel film I've ever seen. If you think Timecrimes and Triangle (I'd recommend) are good then Predestination is just mindblowing.
Great recommendations! There is a previous comment that suggested Coherence and Primer, which I also recommend. Additionally, I would add the second film by the director of Primer, called Upstream Color, and two films by Tarkovsky: Stalker and the original Solaris, not the crappy one with George Clooney.
I have seen six of the ten films on this list. Based on this list, I would add The Endless, Spring, and Resolution by Benson and Moorhead, Predestination starring Ethan Hawke, Equilibrium starring Christian Slater, and Coherence.
Fantastic video, Marianna! I definitely to add some of these movies to my TBW list. I am finally going to dive into the works of Andrei Tarkovsky. Do you have a list of favorites you recommend? I was probably going to start with Stalker or The Sacrifice.
I usually don't agree with such lists, most of them seem more like advertisements than reviews. This list is top notch. I've not seen "Color Out of Space" nor "Time Crimes" but I will make it a point to look for them. And "Dark City" is a classic, anyone out there who has has multiple episodes of sleep paralysis can attest to. Ad Astra, very under appreciated. And never let me go is heart wrenching. Anyway for once I can agree with one of these list. Thank you Impression Blend, I will subscribe.
Prospect: low budget sci fi movie with a lot of heart. Pedro Pascal is in it. Europa Rapport: Found Fotage film with Sharlto Cooply ARQ: Netflix sci fi film Last Days on Mars: Overlooked monster film
OK first, mentioning "Perfect Sense" made me want to be your friend. I tell people about it all the time. One of my faves. Props for "Monsters" and "Color Out of Space". I srlsy need to rewatch "Sunshine" and "Dark City". Been a loooong time. I only made it thru like 10 minutes of "Ad Astra", but maybe I'll give it another try. So now I feel that all your other suggestions are worth a shot. Thanks. 👍
I waited to see if it made your list. It didn’t. Radius had me glued with its unique plot line. I recommend everyone give it a watch. Other than that, I’ve watched Dark City so many times I’ve lost count. I’m in my 60s and the set period gave me an odd feeling of memories that weren’t mine but of my parents and grandparents (if that makes sense). One of my favorite movies……ever! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
I can tell these are great suggestions before watching them, since from the few I had already watched (Another Earth, Los Cronocrimenes, Ad astra) you gained my trust! And, how is it possible, I missed a Danny Boyle film... ahhhhhhhhhh. Shame on me. Thanks.
Great video, I added several of your picks to my ever-growing movie list! Have you considered watching and reviewing Silo on Apple? It's easily one of the best sci-fi series I've watched to date. Thematically, I would describe it as somewhere between The Matrix and Nineteen-Eighty-Four. Truly gorgeous world-building (post-apocalyptic retro-tech), mostly great acting (Rebecca Ferguson is fantastic, though Tim Robbins is barely adequate), good character development and interesting dialogue, and perfect pacing that often kept me on the edge of my seat. Maybe the most important aspect for me is that the plot never felt too convoluted, which has ruined many a good series, I'm thinking of Westworld, The Man in the High Castle, and Dark. Also, Adam Savage has done several videos on the props and other behind-the-scenes aspects of Silo, which makes you appreciate it even more.
I watched Another Earth years ago and need to rewatch it, but I do remember a lot of scenes in it and that it was a compelling film (and I was quite taken with Brit Marling). Never Let Me Go might be too slow for the average moviegoer, but it is well acted (especially Carey Mulligan) and deeply moving. I was thinking about Timecrimes the other day, trying to remember the title. Because it's a foreign film that was done with, well, nobody I know, I had no means to look it up, so thanks for reminding me! Quite good, I agree. I stumbled across Monsters by chance and, again, liked it more for its plot. In fact, that's mostly the draw, isn't it, at least until the end. I'd encountered enough comments about Aniara to push me away (though it's still on my to-watch list). I don't think I need to be depressed when I'm already depressed. (I guess I could watch it and follow it with Melancholia, what a mess I'd be then.) Most of the films you've recommended have fairly good ratings, by the way. I will offer: Vesper, Black Hollow Cage and Save Yourselves! Though all three have some problems they didn't keep the films from being engaging and worth the watch. Thanks.
@ Other than getting the science wrong, the rest of the movie is great. If a rogue planet was approaching earth, it would either get pulled apart by our gravity if it’s smaller than earth and its fragments would rain down on us like asteroids and destroy the earth, or it would pull the earth apart and suck us into its own orbit if it’s larger than us. One of those outcomes should’ve been the end of Melancholia.
'Never Let Me Go' made me cry more than any other film in this genre. Thank you for including it. My foremost recommendation is one I would classify as a Sci-Fi, romantic comedy drama and that is 2013's 'Her' directed by Spike Jonze. I hope it will be getting a lot of attention in the coming year because it is set in LA 2025. Beautifully shot from a cinematic standpoint, well written/directed, and a great cast including Joaquin Phoenix, Amy Adams, Scarlett Johansson, etc. Not at all a dystopian film like a lot of futuristic ones are and one that rather accurately predicted how much AI has such an influence on our lives. Thanks for a great list. Wishing you and family a lovely Thanksgiving. 🦃
Thank you! Same to you! "Her" is one of my all-time favorite films, definitely one of the best sci-fi movies ever made. Everything about it is perfection.
Excellent, love a bit of impression blend sci-fi! Safety not guaranteed is great for a bit of Aubrey Plaza. To be fair, i probably got the recommendation from this channel
Another Earth - that final scene after everything else that happened floored me (in a good way). Waiting to see if Safety Not Guaranteed makes your list🙂.
I remember seeing Dark City in the theater. When I walked out I thought to myself I liked it as much as I did AP’s directorial debut, The Crow. Both movies in my top 25 of the 90’s.
Still have to see Dark City (I know ... can't believe it myself). I tried watching Sunshine ... it was SO slow. Gotta try again. All I can think of for an underrated Sci-fi show that should be watched is the Battlestar Galactica redo (2004-2008). It is like watching a 45 min movie every episode.
I can't wait to see your suggestions for even more underrated sci-fi movies, so don't forget to leave them in the comments!

Coherence, Primer and Triangle... Primer can be dense, but is the best movie about time travel I have ever seen.
Check out Upstream Color, from the dude who brought you Primer.
Primer is the gold standard of time travel properties. Timecrimes is my other favorite, and much more understandable!
The Thirteenth Floor and Strange Days are two of the most criminally underrated sci fi movies i have ever seen.
Can confirm, wholeheartedly.
Strange Days… fantastic!
Strange Days is another movie I’ve watched countless times. Some deeply arresting scenes (like the subway chase). Great flic!
Totally - I would add Primer and Coherence. I think I would be friends with alternate reality me though
I was going to type these two movies until I saw this comment. This, exactly!!
Dark City is one of the best science fiction movies ever made!
It's been my favorite movie since I saw it in a theater. It changed sci-fi but most people don't realize how influential it was.
Dark City - looks:9 everything else:4
Time crimes was a masterpiece
GATTACA. Nobody talks about that movie anymore. That's quite a shame because it's a very deep and thought provoking movie about mankind and the manipulation of genetics. Also Dark City is one of my favorites ever.
I need to make a retrospective about it at some point, it's one of my favs
Love Gattaca!

"Colossal," a sci-fi comedy starring Jason Sudeikis and Anne Hathaway. Sudeikis was shockingly good in the dramatic scenes.
Really good list with a couple I havent seen, and hope to after your well-deserved enthusiasm for one of my favourite films (with one of the great final scenes) Dark City!! Has a cast of children (which usually causes me to run the other way) that are absolutely amazing, and tension that grabs and doesnt let go!!!
Everyone I know tells me that they thought Ad Astra was terrible, but I absolutely love that movie.
You know what's up!

I liked Ad Astra, however I liked Moon much more
Perhaps inconsistency is the problem here. The movie does not states what it wants to be and can leave the audience lost. And one thing that I remember was that the EVA scene near the end was really bad with unrealistic physics that made me cringe. Maybe I might give it a second chance.
I was incredibly disappointed by that movie ha
I don't know if "10 Cloverfield Lane" is underrated but it's perfect for this list

My picks for underrated Sci-Fi Gems:
Angel's Egg (1985)
Cloud Atlas (2012)
Blood Machines (2019)
Cloud Atlas is phenomenal.
OMG - _Another Earth_ is one of my all-time favorites!
Never Let Me Go was a rare and unexpected perfect 10/10 film for me. It hit me just exactly the right way at the right time. A real revelation.
I love your underrated list for the gems they contain. I’m happy to have seen half of these and some others on my to watch list. Another Earth is a wonderful moving film I have been telling my friends about for years. Gladly it recently became available on MAX.
Monsters and Sunshine are among my favorite movies of all time. Also there are the low budget gems like "Moon" , "Robot and Frank" and "The Box". 🙂
Those were all great!
Moon is so good!
Great list of recommendations! Definitely gonna have to check some of these out, but was so glad to see you recommend Sunshine! You are absolutely right, not enough people talk about that movie! So good!
The ones I've already watched because of your recommendations were truly fantastic so I'm excited to watch the rest!
Love the list and absolutely love that you mentioned “Sunshine”. My pick for an underrated sci-fi movie would be “Moon” with Sam Rockwell.

Thelma (Norway)
Save Ourselves!

Animal Kingdom
Mars Express
Just A Breath Away

Perfect Sense - Max Richter score. Lovely ending. No Blu-ray available in US :-(

"Palm Springs" (Time Loop - HULU)

This is an excellent list. I'd probably add I Origins, The Fountain & Mr Nobody to these as well.
I'm not sure if it counts as Sci-Fi, it leans more towards fantasy/horror, but Moon Garden is an incredible hidden gem.
Looked it up - sound like something I definitely need to check out!
Here's to giving thanks for the recommendations! I've seen about half of them but need to add your other recommendations. Happy holidays!
Happy holidays to you as well! I hope you enjoy the other half!
Thanks for the suggestions!
I’ve actually never seen any of these and most hadn’t even heard of so thanks for the highlights!
Sunshine is great and quite special movie. First half is meditative and second one is visit to the hell
Happy Accidents with Marisa Tomei and Vincent D'Onofrio is a Sci-Fi move that I really like that I think is underated.

One more. Radius (Canada) - everyone within six feet of main character dies.
Actually two.
The Last Days (Spain)
I love Timecrimes! One of the best time travel flicks around
Dark City is the only one I have seen, and it's fantastic! Now I have to check out the others...
I gotta give it to Ms. Marianna. Always well dressed and presentable. Unlike other UA-camrs who look like they just woke up.

Thanks.
Melancholia (2011)
Exactly what I was thinking. I don't think I can watch it again (too emotional) but it is amazing.
Bring similar type of video for mystery genre Please 💜
Monsters and Dark City... every sci fi nerd knows and loves these
Nope!
This woman saving Dark City for last I think she is a spirit animal
I'll recommend 'Crimes of the Future'. I loved it. it has some horror themes and I think you'll find it intriguing.
Thank you!
Finally someone mentioned Aniara!
Excellent, love a bit of impression blend sci-fi! Safety not guaranteed is great for a bit of Aubrey Plaza. To be fair, i probably got the recommendation from this channel
I have a very special place in my heart for that one ))
Another Earth - that final scene after everything else that happened floored me (in a good way). Waiting to see if Safety Not Guaranteed makes your list🙂.
Yes! The ending of "Another Earth" hits so hard
I had the same reaction - actually jumped off the couch!
I remember seeing Dark City in the theater. When I walked out I thought to myself I liked it as much as I did AP’s directorial debut, The Crow. Both movies in my top 25 of the 90’s.
Southland Tales, Moon, Serenity, Ender's Game, Edge of Tomorrow
Still have to see Dark City (I know ... can't believe it myself). I tried watching Sunshine ... it was SO slow. Gotta try again. All I can think of for an underrated Sci-fi show that should be watched is the Battlestar Galactica redo (2004-2008). It is like watching a 45 min movie every episode.
Coherence should definitely be on this list.
Pandorum is underrated sci-fi movie.
Thank you for mentioning ANIARA. I saw it years ago, and it still haunts me.
As depressing as it gets
@ImpressionBlend Your ❤️ on my comment disappeared because I had to edit the spelling for Aniara. I typed Aniana 😭😅
Happy Thanksgiving Marianna 🦃
You too!
Check out High Life (2018), Oxygen (2021), and Vesper (2022)
Ad Astra was amazing in theaters. I feel sorry for those who missed seeing it on the big screen
Right??? I'm so glad I saw it on the big screen!
Monsters is so good, a very beautiful film.
