Always love seeing your year-end list. I still have a few movies to catch up on before I make my list. My favorites so far are Across the Spider-Verse, Oppenheimer, Blackberry, and Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret.
My top 10 favorite movies 1) Dungeons & Dragons 2) Barbie 3) Joy Ride 4) Ninja Turtles 5) Oppenheimer 6) Wonka 7) A Million Miles Away 8) The Marvels 9) Godzilla Minus One 10) Radical
I’m kinda surprised Barbie hasn’t really been on anyone’s list. Maybe I liked that more than most people? I took my 3.5 year old daughter to see it twice and she had an absolute blast. But she also loves Barbie’s to an extreme I’ve never witnessed lol
Chris Stuckmann and Austin Burke had Barbie in their list. Although not top 10 necessarily but they still gave Barbie a shout out. Same goes to the popular WatchMojo. I also think that Barbie is my top 20 favourite movie of the year
Most of these vloggers are just afraid to put the highest grossing film of the year just because it's based on a girls toy IP. It's a great movie surprisingly and they can't even put it on their top 10. They rather put boring run of the mill indie films as their "best".
You’re not alone on Creator island, Dan. It’s easily the best sci-fi movie this year and hopefully we get to see Gareth Edwards build more incredible and unique worlds in the future. Thanks for all the great content this year, Dan! Happy New Year to you and Mara! 🥳🎉
Saw it by myself and loved it, was able to convince my family to go and see it and all of them loved it too. I think it just didn't get the marketing it needed. So far nobody I know that saw it has said they didnt' like it. It just lacked the hype to succeed at the Box office sadly.
It wasn't long enough as there was quick flashback edits. It gets the same criticism as Bade Runner did when it was released. Modern classic. Guaranteed.
Hey Dan. British fan of you and your channel - stumbled on it this year and you’re up there with Mark Kermode as my favourite reviewer. Have a great 2024 mate
My top 10 10 Leave the World Behind 9 John Wick 4 8 A Good Person 7 Barbie 6 Killers of The Flower Moon 5 Godzilla Minus One 4 Across The Spider-Verse 3 Anatomy of a Fall 2 Past Lives 1 The Holdovers No i didn’t forget Oppenheimer, that movie was fine lol
For a young actor that would never heave a chance to be nominated for some award I would add a young girl (sorry, don't know her name) in Sound of Freedom. She spoke with her eyes. Amazing.
It angers me how many critics quickly wrote off Elemental because they wanted to talk about Disney failing, but more so, since Pixar has been going strong for the last 30 years. Its like our society is more obsessed with tearing down than building up.
1:07 and that's a big reason I watch and rewatch your videos. Thanks for all your hard work and thought this year. (I assume every year, but I'm new). My buddy and I consistently come back when we are curious about a film. Thanks for keeping me company while I was homeless from coming out of jail and all sorts of fun times.
@4:36 I was like what an oddly specific category. Then I was even more surprised that my favorite didn’t even make it as a runner up. Beanie Bubble was really great imo
Best: 1. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse 2. Oppenheimer 3. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 4. John Wick: Chapter 4 5. The Holdovers 6. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem 7. Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One 8. The Creator 9. Scream VI 10. Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves 11. Killers of the Flower Moon Worst: 5. Napoleon 4. Meg 2: The Trench 3. Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny 2. Rebel Moon - Part One: A Child of Fire 1. The Black Demon
Any other year, I think Dominic Sessa would get several Supporting Actor nominations, including an Oscar nomination. I was happy you mentioned the other two main performances, Dan, but disappointed you didn’t mention Dominic Sessa. It was his first film role ever, and his acting was on the same level as his adult counterparts.
I think my top 10 best goes like this: 10) creed 3 9) equaliser 3 8) Sisu 7) evil dead rise 6) Spider-Man across the spiderverse 5) killers of the flower moon 4) Godzilla minus one 3) Oppenheimer 2) John wick chapter 4 1) Mission impossible dead reckoning part 1

4:13 absolutely love your shout-out for Milo Machado Graner!! He deserves an Oscar nom for best supporting actor tbh, and in an alternative universe he's really the winner
Great video, Dan! Made me wonder if you were the one in charge of producing the Screenies Awards back in the good Screen Junkies’ days. You should play more into that campy format for next year’s Best & Worst. 😉
I edited the first couple of Screenies awards and moved on to helping with the writing and producing as the years went on. They became my baby in the later years, so it's hard to stop doing silly awards shows, haha.
Awesome picks, Dan! Your perspective is always a treat because it isn't totally by-the-numbers. It's honest and includes movies I haven't heard of or seen in other lists. Happy New Year!
Personal List: 10 - The Holdovers 9 - Asteroid City 8 - Fallen Leaves 7 - Are you there god? It's me Margarett 6 - The Boy and the Heron 5 - Anatomy of a Fall 4 - Barbie 3 - Killers of the Flower Moon 2 - Past Lives 1 - Oppie
Movie fans constantly complain about unoriginal big budget blockbusters, then movies like The Creator come out and people refuse to see or talk about it.
Thank you for another great year, Dan! And when you said your " weird " perspective, I'd honestly never thought of it that way - informed, amusing, logical, fair...but I never once thought weird :-)
Solid list my man. Hey look I’m glad you loved The Creator and you connected with it, I just wish I was on the same wavelength. Visually impressive, but I found the characters underwritten but that’s me. Maestro also I liked but didn’t love, just wish the narrative was more focused, it was little disjointed. But some of the other films (from what I’ve seen) I agree: Oppenheimer, Godzilla, Spiderverse, Past Lives, The Holdovers, those are on my best list. As far as the Worst, I didn’t see Blood and Honey and Knights of the Zodiac and I have zero interest to check them out, Rebel Moon I agree wholeheartedly, and The Marvels I definitely didn’t dislike it as much as you did, honestly in terms of the mid/bad comic book movies this year, I was entertained by it than Aquaman 2 (mostly because of the leads), I remember moments of it compared to Shazam 2, and I didn’t hate many elements of it compared to The Flash and Quantumania, but it is an average movie and could’ve been better if it didn’t feel rushed. Just doesn’t scream *Worst of the Year* for me. Honestly I’m surprised Meg 2 or Expendables 4 didn’t make your list unless you forgot them.
I still haven't seen Oppenheimer, that runtime is ridiculous. I'll wait to watch it at home and pause and have plenty of breaks. Thanks for your video.
So glad you acknowledged the wonderful Theater Camp! It's up for 3 Independent Spirit Awards (YAY! ) but am crossing my fingers also that the SAG Awards give it props for Best Ensemble and that there's the possible Oscar nod for the sweet "Camp Isn't Home" number. It is such a charmer.
Glad Godzilla got into your top 10 (honestly thought it might be an honorable mention). For me, it was my first Godzilla film and I think it was just a film for me. It would be my top film of the year, but I can’t deny Oppenheimer was just so well done too… so deciding between those 2 for me is just a struggle.
Thanks for the list, some great recs here. I was expecting you to review Dream Scenario at some point as that film seems like something you would enjoy dissecting. Anyway, have Happy New Year Dan looking forward to more reviews in 2024.

The fact that you have 7/10 Oscar best picture nominees on your list and 2 more on your honorable mentions really cements that we have a great crop of nominees this year.
My top 10 movies of the year (based on when I saw them in the cinema) 1 Across the spiderverse 2. Puss in boots 2 3. Dumb Money 4. Allelujah 5. John wick 4 6. Renfield 7. A man called otto 8. Worst movies I saw this year: Are you there god its me Margaret, greatest day, Transformers, the meg 2 and blackberry
Yesterday, I went to see Dogman by Luc Besson and it immediately became my favorite movie of the year. Oppenheimer was great, but Dogman took me on an emotional journey that this year is only rivaled by The Boy and the Heron. I read that Dogman is scheduled for a 2024 release in the United States. Don`t listen to Rotten Tomatoes, it`s a great movie.
The criticism of Poor Things makes sense but at the same time, the film is very fable/fairy tale like, so for me I don't take it as literally as others do.
TOP 10 BEST MOVIES OF 2023: 1. Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse 2. Godzilla Minus One 3. Mission: Impossible Dead Reckoning Part I 4. John Wick Chapter 4 5. Oppenheimer 6. Killers Of The Flower Moon 7. The Killer 8. Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol.3 9. Scream VI 10. Elemental TOP 5 WORST MOVIES OF 2023: 1. Shotgun Wedding 2. Vacation Friends 2 3. After Everything 4. Knights Of The Zodiac 5. The Exorcist: Believer
Thanks for the list! I've got a list of stuff to watch which is great. Everything you said about Spiderverse were my thoughts exactly. I left wanting to watch it again immediately. It was such an amazing ride that it left me in awe. It was funny, it was sad, it was meta, it was everything that not only an animated movie could be but a Marvel movie could be. I think it's worth noting that over the course of the last two years...we've had movies about Classical Music! As a fan of the genre...it's just awesome. TAR was amazing and Cate throwing out names like MTT (Michael Tilson Thomas) was a great inside baseball kind of thing. Then we have a film about Lenny B! And NYC isn't NYC w/o Lenny B! AND they were two films oddly featuring Mahler! Finally...sorry about the 'Noles man. And that's from a 'Cane. I know y'all were 20 players down...but nobody wants to see that kind of a game much less have in the history books. (Also...kind of karmic perhaps it was in Miami!!)
My top 10 of 2023 1) Oppenheimer 2) Spiderverse 2 3) John Wick 4 4) Mission impossible 7 5) Killers of the flower moon 6) Air 7) The pale blue eye 8) The creator 9) The killer 10) Guardians 3
You might think you're on an island alone with "The Creator", but I actually think you might be on an even more isolated island when it comes to "Maestro". If there's one film in awards contention that I couldn't stand or understand the praise for, it was that one. Great compilation of your bests and worsts overall, though. Enjoyed seeing you recap the biggies.
My pick for Best Performance That Never Had a Chance is Tobin Bell in SAW X And for 2022, Jessie Buckley for Men. One of the best performances I think I've ever seen, honestly.
My top 10 favorite films of the year: 1. Oppenheimer 2. The Creator 3. The Super Mario Bros. Movie 4. Wonka 5. Five Nights at Freddy’s 6. Dream Scenario 7. A Haunting in Venice 8. Gran Turismo 9. Knock at the Cabin 10. Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning - Part One
I found it offensive doing a worst films of the year list without including that shameful trash of a cash grab called The Exorcist Believer. One of truly despicable garbage I've seen all year.
Man I remember everyone thinking Finn Wolfhard was going to be the breakout star of Stranger Things after that first season and his performances have just been insufferable as he gets older.
I wish I could've put The Creator in my list but storyproblems hang me on that. But if you ask me, did I enjoy The Creator? Absolutely, will I watch it again maybe in the future? Absolutely
I forgot that Scrapper came out this year until I read your comment! I think every year, we should get like a father daughter movie. Last year we had Aftersun, this year we had Scrapper, god knows what new title there will be next year
Only 3 of my Top 10 aren't in your Top 20 😅 I personally had Flora and Son, May December, and Asteroid City in there. However, my Top 2 movies are ones that I would never would have seen if it weren't for your recommendations in the channel. D&D was just a fun time and I've rewatched it so many times with my family who I have a campaign group with. I also would have never seen Are You There God? It's Me Margaret but man did I really connect with the movie once I gave it a shot after your summer recap. I personally found her spiritual journey aligning very close to my own and it goes to show how you can relate any story as long as the characters are at the center of it. Here's to 2024, Dan! 🎉
Hey Dan, Happy New Year! I'm glad you included THE CREATOR, not because I agree (I didn't see it!), but because critics should add any films they believe with their whole chest are among the best of the year, regardless of consensus. (no two lists should look alike!) keep keeping things interesting in 2024, Dan; thanks for all you do.
1 Napoleon 2 Killers of the Flower Moon 3 Mission Impossible DR pt 1 4 Blackberry 5 Ferrari 6 How to Blow Up a Pipeline 7 Flora & Son 8 Oppenheimer 9 Saltburn 10 Marsh King's Daughter Honorable Mention: Earth Mama
Happy New Years to you and Mara, Dan. Thank you for higlighting two of my favorites of the year - The Creator and The Holdovers. I love Alexander Payne and I think this might be his best film, ditto Paul Giamatti's best performance. It's streaming now on Peacock, for anyone who hasn't seen it yet.
Thanks for your hard work this year, Dan! I'll continue to enjoy my weekly routine of listening to Charts and your reviews while I'm at work. Thanks especially for your breadowns on the writers and actors strikes! They were very helpful.

I don't know if this is blasfemia or not, but Dan Murrel is as good as a film critic as Ebert was. The way he brakes down a film, going through the emotions of it while at the same time highlighting the ups and downs, paints a perfect picture of any film and makes you feel more curious by those movies you were curious about; makes you feel interested by those films you would never seen or wanted to hear about, and makes you feel more excited about those you were excited already. He is as impartial as he can be, and he loves everything it is to love about the art of filmmaking, making us cinema lovers proud that someone like us can reach this level of insight, wisdom and professionalism. You sir have become my favorite movie critic!
I felt like the blocking and framing to avoid showing a likeness of Michael Jordan in Air was torturous. If you haven't secured the rights to show a likeness of a person, how do you even attempt to make a movie about a product so impacted by that person? Worst movie I saw all year.
They do show his likeness in the archival footage that's used at the end of the film. From what I've read, they didn't show Jordan because they felt it would be a distraction from the story - the minute you show him, people start thinking about if he looks/sounds like the real MJ and the focus is off the drama of the film. If that is your sole reason for hating it, it's not for the reason you think.

I always do honorable mention first
Watch mojos fault
You have it backwards. Putting honorable mentions at the beginning makes no sense because it kills suspense.
Just wanna shout out a performance that I unironically loved from this year, Messi the dog as Snoop, from Anatomy of a Fall
If there were Dog Academy Awards, Messi would take home the acting prize easily. Not even close.

7) A Million Miles Away
8) The Marvels
9) Godzilla Minus One
10) Radical
I’m kinda surprised Barbie hasn’t really been on anyone’s list. Maybe I liked that more than most people? I took my 3.5 year old daughter to see it twice and she had an absolute blast. But she also loves Barbie’s to an extreme I’ve never witnessed lol
Chris Stuckmann and Austin Burke had Barbie in their list. Although not top 10 necessarily but they still gave Barbie a shout out. Same goes to the popular WatchMojo. I also think that Barbie is my top 20 favourite movie of the year
The very fact that a 3,5 year old loved it should tell you that it's rubbish.
Or Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3
Most of these vloggers are just afraid to put the highest grossing film of the year just because it's based on a girls toy IP. It's a great movie surprisingly and they can't even put it on their top 10. They rather put boring run of the mill indie films as their "best".
Or it's anti patriachy that's why
You’re not alone on Creator island, Dan. It’s easily the best sci-fi movie this year and hopefully we get to see Gareth Edwards build more incredible and unique worlds in the future.
Thanks for all the great content this year, Dan! Happy New Year to you and Mara! 🥳🎉
Same! The Creator rules hard.
Saw it by myself and loved it, was able to convince my family to go and see it and all of them loved it too. I think it just didn't get the marketing it needed. So far nobody I know that saw it has said they didnt' like it. It just lacked the hype to succeed at the Box office sadly.
Nah he's on an island. It was too long and acting bad
My top 10
10 Leave the World Behind
9 John Wick 4
8 A Good Person
7 Barbie
6 Killers of The Flower Moon
5 Godzilla Minus One
4 Across The Spider-Verse
3 Anatomy of a Fall
2 Past Lives
1 The Holdovers
No i didn’t forget Oppenheimer, that movie was fine lol
For a young actor that would never heave a chance to be nominated for some award I would add a young girl (sorry, don't know her name) in Sound of Freedom. She spoke with her eyes. Amazing.
It angers me how many critics quickly wrote off Elemental because they wanted to talk about Disney failing, but more so, since Pixar has been going strong for the last 30 years.
Its like our society is more obsessed with tearing down than building up.
Dan I'm with you on The Creator! I think it's an "original" sci-fi film that's sorely needed in today's movie landscape.

2. Rebel Moon - Part One: A Child of Fire
I think my top 10 best goes like this:
10) creed 3
9) equaliser 3
8) Sisu
7) evil dead rise
6) Spider-Man across the spiderverse
5) killers of the flower moon

The screen junkies mention! Such a good era. I've been watching you for more than 10 years every week!
Really miss those Movie Fights, surprised that no one else has done such a format.
@@ChubbyChecker182yea me too they were fun

It's up for 3 Independent Spirit Awards (YAY! ) but am crossing my fingers also that the SAG Awards give it props for Best Ensemble and that there's the possible Oscar nod for the sweet "Camp Isn't Home"
number.
My list 1-10:
Missing (Disgustingly underrated)
MI7
Oppenheimer
Creator
Spider-verse
GOTG3
John wick 4
Dungeons and dragons
Strays
Scream vi
Transformers
GT
My top 10 picks for this year would be:
1. Anatomy of a Fall
2. Poor Things
3. The Holdovers
4. All of Us Strangers
5. Zone of Interest
6. May December
7. Barbie
8. The Color Purple
9. Oppenheimer
10. American Fiction
Worst film of 2023 - Rebel Moon
Really interesting list, and I’d expect nothing less! You’re one of my favorites Dan, and keep up the fantastic work!
The fact that you have 7/10 Oscar best picture nominees on your list and 2 more on your honorable mentions really cements that we have a great crop of nominees this year.
My top 10 movies of the year (based on when I saw them in the cinema)
1 Across the spiderverse
2. Puss in boots 2
3. Dumb Money
4. Allelujah
5. John wick 4
6. Renfield
7. A man called otto
8. GOTG 3
9. Banshees of inisherin
10. MI:Dead Reckoning
Honorable mentions to TMNT, Sisu and 3 musketeers:D’artagnan.
Worst movies I saw this year:
Are you there god its me Margaret, greatest day, Transformers, the meg 2 and blackberry
TOP 10 BEST MOVIES OF 2023:
1. Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse
2. Godzilla Minus One
3. Mission: Impossible Dead Reckoning Part I
4. John Wick Chapter 4
5. Oppenheimer
6. Killers Of The Flower Moon
7. The Killer
8. Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol.3

10. Elemental
TOP 5 WORST MOVIES OF 2023:
1. Shotgun Wedding
2. Vacation Friends 2
3. After Everything
4. Knights Of The Zodiac
My top 10 of 2023
1) Oppenheimer
2) Spiderverse 2
3) John Wick 4
4) Mission impossible 7
5) Killers of the flower moon
6) Air
7) The pale blue eye
8) The creator
9) The killer
10) Guardians 3
I loved that you picked Alden Ehrenreich as your mvp. I like him as an actor and watched all his movies this year.
I guess I'm splitting my time between several islands. It's nice to live tropical!
Love to see you still crushing it, Dan! Happy New Year! Thanks for a great video!
My pick for Best Performance That Never Had a Chance is Tobin Bell in SAW X
And for 2022, Jessie Buckley for Men. One of the best performances I think I've ever seen, honestly.
Jessie Buckley is so underrated.
Love this ranking, Dan! Especially the shout-out for the Creator and Godzilla Minus One! Adored both those movies!
Good stuff Dan. REALLY love those #1 and #2 picks!
Hey Dan I'd recommend Perfrct Days, Beyond Utopia and Monster if you haven't seen these films yet from 2023
My top 10 favorite films of the year:
1. Oppenheimer
2. The Creator
3. The Super Mario Bros. Movie
4. Wonka
5. Five Nights at Freddy’s
6. Dream Scenario
7. A Haunting in Venice
8. Gran Turismo
9. Knock at the Cabin
10. Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning - Part One
What?? Dog Gone didn't get the accurate title award?? 😂
I found it offensive doing a worst films of the year list without including that shameful trash of a cash grab called The Exorcist Believer. One of truly despicable garbage I've seen all year.
Reallly enjoyed that Dan. You win my award for the most thoughtful and thought provoking Top 10 list of the year. 🎉
Man I remember everyone thinking Finn Wolfhard was going to be the breakout star of Stranger Things after that first season and his performances have just been insufferable as he gets older.
He’s not been done any favors by the parts he’s been offered and/or taken.
Here’s to those who enjoyed The Creator! Glad it made your list 👏👏👏
I wish I could've put The Creator in my list but storyproblems hang me on that. But if you ask me, did I enjoy The Creator? Absolutely, will I watch it again maybe in the future? Absolutely
I loved the Screenees! Thanks for the throwback
Loved the shoutout to Scrapper. What a lovely movie! Harris Dickinson is a star.
Did you get a chance to see The Iron Claw yet? Really interested to hear your thoughts on it!
Hey Dan, Happy New Year! Been watching ur channels for years...thanks for the video..always respect ur input and enjoyed ur video with Kristian and John too..For me i also loved 'Anatomy of A Fall' and 'Oppenheimer' i unfortunately didnt care for Asteroid City and im glad Barbie is not in ur top 10 as i detested the movie....
Great list. My top 3 was Anatomy of a Fall, Past Lives and The Holdovers. Glad u also loved those movies as well :)
10) Air
09) Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem
08) John Wick Chapter 4
07) Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning: Part One
06) Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3
05) Nimona
04) Godzilla Minus One
03) Oppenheimer
02) Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse
01) The Holdovers
Love your list, completely agree with you about Oppenheimer. That was one of the most complex movies I have ever seen, it was magnificent ART.
I'm glad you included THE CREATOR, not because I agree (I didn't see it!), but because critics should add any films they believe with their whole chest are among the best of the year, regardless of consensus. (no two lists should look alike!) keep keeping things interesting in 2024, Dan; thanks for all you do.
1 Napoleon
2 Killers of the Flower Moon
3 Mission Impossible DR pt 1
4 Blackberry
5 Ferrari
6 How to Blow Up a Pipeline
7 Flora & Son
8 Oppenheimer
9 Saltburn
10 Marsh King's Daughter
Honorable Mention: Earth Mama
Happy New Years to you and Mara, Dan. Thank you for higlighting two of my favorites of the year - The Creator and The Holdovers. I love Alexander Payne and I think this might be his best film, ditto Paul Giamatti's best performance. It's streaming now on Peacock, for anyone who hasn't seen it yet.
Thanks for your hard work this year, Dan! I'll continue to enjoy my weekly routine of listening to Charts and your reviews while I'm at work. Thanks especially for your breadowns on the writers and actors strikes! They were very helpful.
Looks like I'm in for a movie marathon
Hey Dan, if you get a chance watch two of my favourite movies of 2023:
Fallen Leaves (small film from Finland)
The Iron Claw
Great list! You've pointed me at several movies that passed me by!
My top ten:
1. Iron Claw
2. Beau is Afraid
3. Barbie
4. Talk To Me
5. Are you their god? It’s me Margaret
6. Bottoms
7. Salt burn
8. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
9. Cocaine Bear
10. John Wick Chapter 4
Oppenheimer and Godzilla bookending your top 10 is oddly appropriate. Great list!
