Air was a solid film and almost made it on my top 10 as well.
Godzilla Minus One is #1 for me! That movie was not just great, but also proves a studio doesn't have to spend a bazillion dollars to make great cinematic art.
AHH I love that you included Dungeons and Dragons!!! That was an unexpected delight.

Such a great list! On the whole I found this year to be pretty underwhelming, but Talk To Me, Anatomy of a Fall and Past Lives stood out the most to me- Will definitely check out Poor Things too as soon as it arrives in the UK!

Yes, Oppenheimer was a wonderful piece of art but, it fell to number 2 due to not only being totally wowed off my gourd by Poor Things, but due to the trouble I have with most of Nolan's movies (no offense that you love his films, for the most part so do I): it's like he makes them (or is one of a growing population of) people with 30 second attention spans. In Oppenheimer I felt as soon as I became invested in a powerful scene it would cut to the next, powerful scene, leaving me a) not wanting to leave, and b) rushed to become immersed in the next. It's like he is against scenes lasting more than three minutes, which I feel cheats the audience out of so much. So I feel he needs either a different editor or stop directing his editors. For example, when Oppenheimer comes home to find his wife sitting at the table, drinking with the baby crying? That is a powerful scene and could have given us so much more of an insight to not only her character (a career best by Emily Blunt), but also to the dynamic of their marriage. And then, she exits to the kitchen - slowly, I might add - and the scene abruptly cuts. And I can't even tell you what the next scene was, I felt so shocked. I wanted so much more of her in that scene. Yes, you can infer so many things from that scene (and all his scenes), but this can be very frustrating for a movie lover who wants time to bask in a scene for all its dramatic nuances.
Good list, though, I will now see The Boy And The Heron and Past Lives, so thank you.

Great list! Finally seeing Poor Things tomorrow but I agree on most of your favourites especially the Top 5!
Nice list and video. I can't say I completely agree with choices like "Past Lives," "Killers of the Flower Moon," and "Anatomy of a Fall," but I did find them worthwhile to watch. Sadly, my viewing of current releases had to be sacrificed for the sake of my thesis studies, but I have a few to mention that you didn't.
"The Beast" (NYFF Release) - Directed by Bertrand Bonello.
"The Zone of Interest" - Directed by Jonathan Glazer.
"About Dry Grasses" (NYFF Release) - Directed by Nuri Bilge Ceylan.
I'm so glad that you picked Oppenheimer as your number one. Watched it 5 times in Imax and loved it. It was not just the storytelling, but the acting overall, might have been the best ever in a movie. So, number one is obviously Oppenheimer, MI Dead Reckoning, John Wick 4, Spiderman Across the Spider-Verse, Guy Ritchie's The Covenant, and Past Lives. Only 6 movies off the top of my head.
Seriously 5 times? One was enough for me
Excellent choices as usual Marianna. I am waiting with baited breath for Poor Things to show up at a theatre near me. I suspect that more awards and Academy nods will make it magically appear.
My wife & I saw Dungeons & Dragons & M. I: 7 in the theatre, they were both great fun. Missed Boy & Heron unfortunately.

Great top 10! It's hard to give a #1. There were so many amazing films in 2023 from the Cannes films to A24's 2023 films, Wick, Godzilla, Oppenheimer, flower moon, my hometown favorite The Holdovers, etc, but Poor Things distinguished itself for me. I was so hyped for it in September, but I'm glad it was moved to Christmas instead. It was the best Christmas gift ever from realm of cinema.
Hi, fellow A&E scribe and enjoy your unique perspectives. I was looking for a film I saw this year but it came out at the very end of 2022: Broker. Sometimes it's unclear if foreign films get a couple of months' grace period because of the delay they often have reaching us (I've seen some Oscar picks more than a year old nominated late). If the Venice/Cannes-recognized, under-the-radar gritty-but-heartfelt gem can get some love this year, it would be well-deserved.

Your number nine - John Wick: Chapter Four - is my number three, and I loved it not only for the astounding action but the engaging characters and layered, moving story about vengeance, loyalty, friendship and toxic grudges. Your number one - Oppenheimer - is my number two, and my film of the year is Godzilla Minus One. :)

Great video, 2023 was an amazing year for movies in my opinion.
I'm gonna have to watch Honor among Thieves now. I wrote it off too, based on the trailers. Thanks for your list!
My top 5 at the moment are: The Covenant, Saltburn, Killers of the Flower Moon, Leave the World Behind and Wonka (surprising myself).
I have on my watchlist about 20 more movies from this year (like Godzilla Minus One, Poor Things, The Iron Claw, The Zone of Interest, La Sociedad de la Nieve, Perfect Days, American Fiction...).
I watched this year also a few of enjoyable/funny/guilty pleasure movies which meet my expectations like Champions, The Super Mario Bros Movie, Scream 6, No Hard Feelings, Mission Impossible, Thanksgiving, The Equalizer 3, Totally Killer, A Biltmore Christmas, Dream Scenario.
Also I had a lot of movie disappointments this year like Oppenheimer, Napoleon, The Killer, Spider-Man etc. ...this movies just didn't meet my expectations, for this or that reason...
I still need to watch Anatomy of a Fall, Past Lives, Poor Things and especially The Boy and the Heron.

Despite the strikes, the CBM fatigue, and the Disney debacle, 2023 was definitely a good year for movies, so much so that I really struggled to bump out of my top ten list titles like 'Saltburn', 'Tetris' and 'Fallen Leaves'. Besides, there were movies that even when they had a wide release in 2023 were officially premiered in 2022, like 'M3GAN' and 'Talk to Me'. Still, I liked the way my top ten list ended up.

Excellent list as always, Marianna. My #1 choice would be Oppenheimer also. Last year I thought it was Babylon, but it inexplicably did not even get nominated for any of the major categories. Was wondering if you could do a horror top ten. Unlike a lot of other film connoisseurs, you have great respect and knowledge of the horror genre.
Thank you! I considered doing a horror top 10, but honestly I don't think it has been an amazing year for horror. We've had some really good ones (Talk to Me, Beau is Afraid, When Evil Lurks, Evil Dead Rise), but it's weaker than the previous two years IMO. I have my hopes up for 2024 though, lots of promising genre stuff on the calendar ))
Such an absolute masterpiece! I feel lucky to have lived in a time that I could see this movie honestly! And seeing it the first time in IMAX was definitely the best cinematic experience I’ve ever had.

I recently watched this new Indian film called "three of us" 2023, and it reminded me a lot of "Past Lives" but more mature I don't think it's better than "Past Lives" but definitely in my top 10 list. You should check it out cause i think you will love it!!.

uhmmm ... The Holdovers?
Asteroid City has to be in my top ten of 2023: A beautifully shot, truly bizarre, yet intelligent and exceptionally funny allegory on life. And a love letter to all nerdy Earthlings out there. While I know Wes Anderson is not everybody's cup of tea - usually it's not mine either, I have some difficulty understanding why so many people dislike this movie. Perhaps because they consider reading in between the lines and contemplating on philosophical question is too much to ponder? Or because they believe humour always equals having punchlines? I really don't know.
Other than that I'd happily join in with your top ten film list of 2023.

(Honorable Mention) Gran Turismo [for coming out of nowhere and being better than it should have been]
I just don't get all the love for Oppenheimer. I saw a talky confusing uninvolving political courtroom drama. Definitely not the exciting masterpuece that everyone else saw. Maybe my mind will change on a second viewing. But i was totally underwhelmed the first time seeing it. Nolans best film remains The Dark Knight.
Yeah I don't get it either but I guess we weren't the target audience.
I was disappointed also, ofcourse movie has great cinematography and acting, but overall script and narative is nothing special...for me personally it's not even in top 7 Nolan movies
Same here. Nolan is no doubt an innovator director and there is so much he does well. For me though, most of his films are weakened by his writing. Usually I enjoy his films on first viewing, and then they quickly lose their magic. I’ve come to accept his films are just not for me. Dark Knight also remains my favorite of his, but then I hated the Dark Knight Rises… Oppenheimer may be his most perfect film, and yet I was unmoved. I can’t quite put a finger to what it was missing.

Nice! Love seeing M:I 7 up there, almost put that one in myself
It broke my personal record for theater viewing of a film. About 20 year's ago I saw Kill Bill Vol 1 - 7 times. I saw MI 7 - 8 times in the theater. It was soooo much fun! P.S. Just saw Poor Things yesterday, would be #7 on my list if I saw it last year. Really good film.

Oppenheimer is Nolans best movie and will be a classic. I too was a bit apprehensive at a 3 hour biopic even though the person and the subject matter did interest me but Nolan just swept me off my feet from start to finish. This is what cinema is all about.

2023 was a good year for films
Oppenheimer isn't my favorite film from Nolan (Inception still holds that honor), but I think it is his best film. I fully expect it to win Best Picture and I think it is very deserving!
Favourite 2023 Action Movie: BALLERINA (Netflix). A retired bodyguard in South Korea goes after the druglord who caused her best friend (the ballerina of the title) to commit suicide.

I saw all of the films are your list except THE BOY AND THE HERON, but, for my money, the best film of last year was GODZILLA MINUS ONE. A poignant story and great special effects.
If there was a category that said “Movies that I didn’t get” . Then that surely would be TALK TO ME. It was alright. Didn’t think it was as great as everyone keeps saying it is .

Oppenheimer is a masterpiece but my most enjoyable movie to watch was Mission Imposible.
