The best part about Astra blades is that there Really high quality for a low cost. That is a win win situation.
ZeaMoore4 You can get them everywhere here in Czech republic :) One package costs about 17CZK = 0.69USD
thanks Nick. as a critical care RN i feel your pain with respect to your work. i myself am a daily shaver and really appreciate the work you put into your vids given the little time we have on hand. the info i got from you has saved me tons of time and money. the first time i tried de shaving was with my dads gillette and i was 12 years old. this went on until he busted me --got a good laugh. did not have any facial hair then but i just wanted to be like him. fast forward 45 years later i am still enjoying both SE and DE shaving . thanks again.
Thanks to your videos, I had my first DE safety razor shave this morning using these blades. Hated paying crazy money for cartridges so wanted to give this a go. Not as scary as I anticipated, managed a full shave with only one small nick! Lovely shave too, very close, love it!
Everyone says you should get a sampler pack when you start out, but I think maybe most new shavers would do better if they stuck with a single brand of razor for 6 months until they have impeccable technique, and then doing blade exploration.
I've been DE shaving for only about 4 years, but many of the blades I didn't think worked for me from my initial sampler (Personna, Crystal, and Feather) actually work perfectly now that I understand my growth patterns, how to make great lather, good prep, and technique.
I've watched your whole series so far, and I think you're proving that good technique is more important than which blade you use.
bigswangingballs23 I totally agree with your statement. I got the DE sampler pack and have narrowed it down greatly because of my poor technique
Very well articulated. I was thinking the same thing.
Very well said I was thinking same
I disagree because I only really started learning correct technique when I found a sharper blade
Was thinking this today. New to safety razor. Had some good and bad experiences. But having a great time with Astra sp now I’ve used them a bit more and technique has improved - makes me not want to bother using my other sample blades
Hiya Nick, thank you so much for being such an awesome shaving tutor. After using my little Fatip Picollo as my DE razor for two years on and off now, I have to say, wow- you promoted me to a whole new level. Had I only known the Merkur 34c HD, Semogue 2000 and cella soap before it arrived by mail today and before I picked up the aggresive Picollo. At least I have perfected my technique with it and will only ever use it if I let my beard grow to a heavy stubble. Merkur was so effortless and easy to use, gave almost none irritation, smooth shave, even with that crappy Merkur blade provided. Will load an Astra into it tomorrow, can't wait, that blade is excellent. I can see this to be using daily now, what I couldn't before. Thanks for all your help, just expecting my Caties Bubbles LVDP and my shaving needs will be satisfied for months to come. Keep it up buddy, greetings from the UK.
Been using the Astra blades for awhile and they are my top 2 in my blade arsenal. My wiskers are fairly thick and this blade does a very good job keeping everything tight and close. I usually go three passes, but it feels after pass two i'm all set. One thing I like also about the Astra blades is that they last longer than other blades. Great video and HIGHLY recommended.
I agree out of the sample pack the astra blades gave me the best shave...... no irritation with a close shave, cant beat that!!!
First shave today with the Astra SPs. Pretty impressed.
My top blade in my Beginner's Review as well! Can't beat them for the price especially!
Very good review Nick. I have many different blades and like them all but the best shave I ever had was my 37c slant and a Astra SP blade. Keep up the good work. Your reviews are top notch!
Great review and shave. Thanks Nick. This is my favorite blades.
Great stuff as always Nick! I love Astra blades - easily my #1 daily driver. Very consistent.
New to wet shaving. Others have said that Astra SP are just under Feather in sharpness. So your comments are spot on. I use Astra SP and love them but have nothing to compare against.
I'm new to DE shaving was previously using Feather DE blades which were provided free with my Edwin Jagger DE razor. I found Feather to be too aggressive for my sensitive skin, always suffered with razor burn and kept cutting myself pretty bad no matter how gentle I was. I tried these Astra SP blades for the first time today and they are fantastic! I experienced a smooth and comfortable shave and more importantly no cuts and razor burn. My rating for the Astra SP blade for is 10/10!
Hi Nick. There are a lot of blades out there that I haven`t tried but after using sharks, personnas, bics and a couple of generics I went with Astras as my go to blade. I agree with you 100%. A real good video. Thanks
Astra blades - I love them. These are Czech blades, but made in Russia. I'm Czech so I can buy them everywhere. They've been here for ages. My grandpa still use them, so do I. I prefer Astra Platinum over the Superior. Thank you for great video, Nick. It also makes me feel so proud that you like something from our small country :)
I own 800 of these and still stockpiling. They are my absolute favorite. Definitely something to be proud of. Cheers.
They are #1 in quality, consistency and performance. I've used 500 and there was not a any deviation in the quality in any of them. I've bought sampler packs with Voskhod and every time only one side of the Voskhod blade was sharp.
TheNo85307 Yes The Best Yet VERY SMOOTH !!
I guess you plan on living to the age of 200. lol!!
Astra is a Turkish brand ;) now they made them in Russia
I love these blades as well. I was wondering how they compared to personna so I'm glad that you reviewed them!
Glad you liked them Nick. These are my go to aswell, I narrowly flavour them over Lab Blues and Feathers, I think they last me 1 extra shave over those 2 aswell, not that I try to ring every last bit of performance from a blade.
Bonus points for being so cheap, they are about half the price of Lab Blues in the UK and just under a third the price of Feathers. That's insane value.
I just started using them in a New Razor Merkur 25 C....Wow !! It's So Smooth !!
Nick, thanks again for your videos. I will be trying the Astra SP Platinums Monday morning. Also, today I placed my first order at Stirling for the Executive Man shaving cream since my favorite cologne is Creed. I got it in their new plastic jars. I just started DE shaving a few weeks ago and have only used TOBS so this will be my first soap but should work well with my Semogue 830 boar brush. Thanks again for being such a positive influence in everyones daily life!! Mark
Astra SP are my favorite blades. Sharp, smooth and cheap. Great in my Edwin Jagger DE89 but even better in my Merkur 37C slant. You should try them out in a slant sometime Nick. This series has convinced me to try some Stirling soap samples from their wide range of scents
Nick, I was pleased to see your enthusiasm for these blades. I like them so much that I actually bought a lifetime supply of them 5 years ago. I realized I didn't need to use another blade.
Here's my daily shave. Top notch performance, unbelievable value: Palmolive shave stick, Astra SP in an open comb razor (Merkur 12c is my choice) and a badger brush (pure grade for the extra exfoliation). Try that combo and you won't need anything else.
I used Astra in my first shave when i started wet shaving and result was horrible lots of nicks and cuts and i haven't used it since. Back then i was still learning how to shave properly. Thanks for the video.!
Another outstanding review - thank you!
Ok am new to wet shaving so after looking at all your videos Nick i went for it. I used a mach 3 before, but i wanted a change so i order a Edwin Jagger d89. Great razor love it and i tried the derby razor that come with it. Let me tell you derby are crap. I cut my self a few times a completely mess. I was ready to give up, but them i saw these blades(ASTRAS PLATINUM RAZOR) and wao.... very sharp and very very smooth. I had never had a shave not even with my mach 3 like these blades. I love the astra platinum razor. also i love cella shaving cream love it love it.
Great video! I use Astra blades on my Mühle R41... a long lasting wedding!
i look forward to trying them
Astra SPs are my go to blade, I haven't tried the stainless steel "blues" , yet. On a side note....I love Stirling soap....my current flavor of choice is their Vanilla Sandalwood.
Tried these as they come with the Razorock mission. They were alright on first use (first safety razor shave ever). tried the Rapiras in the package and liked them more. Revisited the Astra after a few weeks of using Rapira blades (went through 3 rapiras). Upon revisiting the Astras with improved technique I found them to be even better than the Rapira but the Rapira is an excellent 2nd go to blade for me so I ordered 100 of each. Astra SP= AMAZING and cheap! I'm finding the Astras are less likely to Nick than the Rapira and the Astras produce BBS shaves easily
My favorite blades alongside Personna Red and Gillette Super Thins from Thailand. I use them in a Forties Super Speed.
Excellent info, thank you!
Astra SP's have been my one and only for well over a year. I do find them to be very smooth, and moderately sharp. Amazon accidentally shipped me 200 blades instead of 100 when I purchased them in late 2013. So I'm going through all of them before I try any others. That's 5 cents per blade!
These blades are amazing. The best I've tried so far.... This review inspired me to try them and i'm very happy it did. These are my new go to blades. Keep up the good work nick shaves !
When it's time for some new Shaving Cream (either for a review or just to try something new for yourself) try the Body Shop Shaving Cream with Maca Root.
Stirling Soap - that is a really great brand of soap. Astra Green's are sharp enough to shave effortlessly - allowing a light touch to get the job done. They are a bit sharper - to me - than the Personna Blue blades.
Hi nickshaves these are awesome blades smooth and sharp and cheap far better than Derby for sure I would recommend these to beginners or advanced shavers alike
You can usually find these at an excellent price. I bought a box of 100 One blade usually lasts me about a week. So for the money you can't beat them. They are the best cutting blades I've used.
I have quite sensitive skin that's prone to razor burn, this blade gives me a great shave with little to no razor burn, good stuff
+kabeljauw agreed. superior to Derby Extra thats for sure.
Same here. I am using a feather AS-D2 and sometimes I got remember myself that I have a razor in my hands instead of a brush.
Thanks for the review Nick! Yes these can be a very good blade but I found them a little random quality wise. Mostly good but the odd "tuggy" one might pop up now and again. I still go more for the Rapira range and the Personnas as my "go-to" blades. I do mix it up a bit though and these occasionally come back in to my rotation.
Awesome review! Really liking Astra SP too. Since you really like Feather blades, try out the Kai blades too. They seem a little smoother to me, yet just as sharp. Also, I just gave a Volkshod blade a try, and these to me are also as good as the Astra. I am going to have to do somekind of shaveoff between Volks and Astra to try and decide which I will bulk up on! Hehe. Maybe just get both! :) also I am waiting on my S1 plate to arrive from ATT. I'll have to try these on that S1 and see if the performance is similar.
Thanks for the vids! Keep up the good work!
+nick shaves I really like how you test the blades in a Merkur and not a top end razor. Gives pretty much 90 percent of wet shavers an idea of how they perform!
it's going to be so awesome when they finally start selling blades here in the USA. yes you can get ASR blades, but nothing Gillette.
Nick, I tried the Astra Platinum in my Mercur 34C and found the results to be just as yours. One of the closest and most comfortable shaves I've ever had. This blade sliced through my heavy Eastern European beard smoothly and effectively. My sensitive skin was left intact with very minimal irritation. I tried this same blade in my Merkur 39C slant and found that it is a bit too aggressive for that razor, but superb with the 34C. I know that this is an old video, but the quality and reasonable price for these blades remain in August 2017 as they did in 2015.
if you still use it could you let me know if they are quality blades still? im reading some reviews that their quality has dropped as of late and i would like to avoid buying a non-quality blade.
@@zenaxia8063 I bought a new 100 pack a couple of months ago and they are still amazing, very efficient and almost no irritation, but as always with blades YMMV
@@gickojerke1262 thanks i appreciate that, i bought them too, they arent as nice as the manscaped ones i have used but, they are still decent and really good for the price
For beginners I recommend a starter pack. I tried different brands and my two favorites are Astra Greens & Feathers.
I use my long handled Merkur with Wilkinson blades and Cremo Original in the shower with my Mirror on a Rope, everything works just perfect.
the website you mentioned at the beginning is amazing
Voskhod has displaced both Astra and Personna as my go-to. Not everyone likes them, but I found them notably sharper, especially on the first shave. Your blade series is motivating my to try some other blades that I've heard a lot about, especially Pol-Silver. It would be wonderful to have that Feather sharpness without the threat of irritation or weepers.
Evan R Interesting...considering Astra and Personna are my two go-to blades, I guess I'll have to try a Voskhod blade next...
Lord Platinum that I got with Razorock worked pretty good for me. At the moment I am using Rapira swedish supersteel, which are just ok not something over the top.
another great review! I was reluctant to try these at first cause I figured they were too cheap to be any good but I love them! as for smoothness you ranked wilkinson above persona in the wilkinson review and persona above astra in this review but also astra above wilkinson in this review! lol - see the conflict? I really pay attention haha :-)
My first razor was the Merkur 38c which is the big brother to the 34c and I must say after now owning several Muhle's, Muhle quality is a bit higher and, you don't have to worry about adjusting the blade to make sure its even. For me, Muhle all the way.
Thanks for the review stud.
Good review !
I was surprised; they ARE that good. In my experience they are comparable to Shark super stainless. On a Maggard MR8 closed comb, with vdh deluxe.
Hey nick. When I first tried those blades I loved them as well. But after time I felt that shaving with this everyday, my shaves became less comfortable ... I tried many blades and after time in tried the ASTRA blue pack and fell in love... So comfortable and smooth... I now use no other blade... If you can compare the green to the blue Astras I'd appreciate it
Gillette 7 o clock black packaging!! Seriously Try em. As smooth as personnas and sharper than them. I was excited to see you try these and was like ohh yea he's got a new favorite now. Glad to see you so excited for them. It's funny how even after a years of doing it something like that can excite you huh.
Astra SP was the first, and only, 100 pack I have purchased. I tried about 10 blades, with Astra being the first. Nothing was as comfortable for me, period. The choice in soap was excellent as well, I love Stirling and the executive man does as decent job at matching Aventus. :)
Just started and bought Astra SP with Stirling executive man soap and aftershave. Hopefully it’s still quality 6 years later!
Hi folks,
I just had my shave with Astra SP platinum and EJ DE 89 razor.
What a good shave it was.No pulling and the blade just slide across my face.
Every blade performs different in every razor, so no matter what you have to check it out yourself.
Bought a 100 pack of these after seeing your review 3 years ago! Still on the same pack, and still very happy with them.
After 2 years do u still have them and how do u feel about them now?
@@Miichelzz94 they are still my go to blade, bought 2 more packs. Tried a few different soaps and use a synthetic brush. Very sharp, good for a few shaves, I have coarse hair. I've tried a few others, I think feather is too sharp for me lot of irritation. I use a closed comb razor.
@@southpawhammer8644 Thanks! I've been using these Astra's since 6-7 months back and I am inlove.
Just bought a hundred pack as well, excited to be using these
These are my absolute go to blade. 9 out of 10 for sharpness, 10 out of 10 for comfort.
One of the best blades put there! :)
I would like to see PolSilver Super Iridium in some future review!
And btw I am curious have you tried palmolive shaving cream?
And of course keep making videos! :)
Astras SP:s are very smooth. My favourite blade from the Gillette St.Petersburg factory is Gillette Silver Blue! It is sharper still than the Astra SP, a bit "harder" but extremely smooth. I have tried most of the blades from PPI and they are all good. Astra SP feels very similar to the domestic "Sputnik" blade. Great review :) Please give GSB a try.
I would recomend getting a blade sampler pack with every new razor that you buy because I've personally have had completely different results with the exact same blade in different razors. I would love to see Perma-Sharp (my personal favorite), Bolzano Superinox, Gillette Silver Blue, and Voskhod blades reviewed.
Astra blades are cheap and they perform really well, like Feathers. Glad you like them!
Heinz von Biboo j
My most favorite blade)
Hi Nick, first off let me say I have learned a lot watching your channel about Wet Shaving.Thank you for making the videos! One request I have for a future video would be a review on the Merkur Blades. Amazon has them for about $8 a 10 pack, for a dollar more, you could get a 100 of the Astra's. I'm very interested in your opinion on them. Best of luck with your Channel and have a good day!
Have you tried any of the other Col Conk shave soaps? I've been wanting to try the natural soap they make, mainly the southwestern sun. maybe you could review it because I'm a bit hesitant with out having it in my hands before ordering it, or having a sent sample or something.
Thanks and keep the awesome reviews coming Nick. Also thanks for helping us noobs out with safety and straight razor shaving. I love it!!
I had the same experience with these blades, my first time with them I didn't like them, I plan on circling back to it, in the near future because of how much people rave about them.
Thanks Nick - I have just ordered 50 of these to go in my Edwin Jagger 87 and my Muhle R89. I got mine from Amazon at £6 which is about $9.30 sounds more expensive than they are in the US but still great value - I'll let you know how I get on with them. I'd like to see you try Muhle blades - I thought they were excellent when I tried them. Cheers Nick, Dave.
These are the blades I use in my Muhle R89 and shavette
Great review. Thanks. If you get a chance, could you please review Polsilver Super Iridium. I find them to have the best combination of sharpness and smoothness of any blade I've ever tried, and I would love to see if your experience is similar.
I swear by these blades. Super sharp, super smooth, super cheap...my wife even uses them!!!
Would love to get your opinion on Ginger's Garden aftershave and balm. I tried samples of them both and was really impressed. And the Suede scent smells awesome.
They are Good
I'd love to see a review on Gillette Silver Blue. their my #2 blade. my #1 blade are these Astra Superior Platinum.
Just committed to the 100 pack of these blades and i do enjoy them very well compared to what i was buying at the store haha
I really enjoy your videos! which blade would you recommend for a late 40's gillette rocket? the wilkinson sword or the astra SP?
Nick, I tryed PolSilver and I heard are made in the same Russian plant as the Astra blades. The PolSilver blades are made for Poland and I found that they are incredible.
Best all rounders for barbers, especially nape work. If the customer has nice even grain you can't beat Feather Pro Guards, though.
Hey nick, once you finish your blade reviews do you plan on doing a recap of your impressions of all of the blades, I understand that blades are subjective to the individual, but would be nice to hear you compare or rate these blades among each other.
Please review Merkur Super Platinum Blades. Thx!
I agree great. Blade
Great video! Wondering which bladed you would thing is sharper ( Rapira Platinum vs Astra Platinum green ) Thanks
i prefer astra sp in my merkur progress > and astra ss in my muhle r 41.for my opininon i love
his blsdes
Nick, Have you tried Lord Razor Blades? They do very well for me and are one of my go to blades. My other go to blade is a Feather. Just to let you know I use a TTO Medium aggressive Big Foot Shaves Razor.
Yeah, these are my first choice too.
Astra SPs are my go to blade, but what I've found is that the first shave with them is very good, the second shave is better and third is just as good as the second. After that, the performance drops off and I usually get 4-5 shaves out of a blade.
That is exactly what I get out of them and they are my absolute favorite.
If you get 4-5 shaves out of a blade that's a good score...! What do you want more...?
Please review Gillette 7 O'Clock super stainless. One of my go to blades.
The Astra SPs are good. They are nice and sharp but far smoother than the Personna Lab Blues.
Hi Nick, i'd like you to test Polsilver and the Chinese ones (Baili and Yellow Eagle and others). There is no test of them on Ytb. until now. Thanks.
I totally agree with you. Astra & Persona are my go to blades.
For the next review, can you do "SUPER Platinum" A.K.A. Israeli Person? or Can you do Polsilver Super Iridium as you next DE razor blade review?
Anyways, I really enjoined your series of DE razor blade reviews.
Thank you
you are the best shaver UA-camr on the planet, I would like to give me a specific answer in terms of sharpness, smoothness, and quality of Rapira platinum lux and Astra superior platinum and which one you prefer as daily to go one?!!! i appreciate your help and support.
best regards
Tarek Halwani
Nick you said that out of all of the blades you've reviewed so far these are your favs. So just to be clear are you including the personna lab blues in that comparative statement?
Hi nick!! I love Astra SP I just want to know how much shaves do u get from a single Astra SP?
Great review on my favorite blade.
The Astra, Gillette Silver Blue, and the Pol Silver are my best blades.....
Nick.... Just wondering if your opinion of the Green box ASTRA premiun is the same. Mine hasn't changed since I started using them. I as well use it with the HD34C with the Astra. The printing on their blade has changed, but the blade remains the same.
Hey Nick, I always love your reviews. When I decided wet shaving was the way to go it was your videos I found the most helpful and informative so I've been a subscriber since. It seems I usually have the same results as you with blades but I didn't like the Astra SP. I have an unopened box of 100 if you have some of my favorite Bic Chromiums to trade?
Jem7sk I just got my 100 for the same reason. Shaved this morning and after my first pass I took the blade out of my Parker 92R and put it in my mildest razor for my next 2 passes. I used a pre-shave. I also combine soap and creme for a nice slick & smooth lather. I have the same sensitive spots on my neck and goatee area Nick describes. The blade did not pass smoothy over these areas and this is where I got my few small nicks.
I been using them for 6 months
Yup! This is my goto blade. They work great with my Merkur 34C and I rarely get nicked with these. Awesome blade for sure! Strangely, Feather blades are totally messing up my face. Looks like a massacre when I'm done. Astra is also a sharp blade, but they rarely hurt my skin. The Feathers are very thin blade, so maybe that's the problem. But who cares. I tossed med Feathers in the trash a long time ago!
could u do a review on gentlemen jon products?
It's a quality blade
