TA-DA!! my work here is done.

I've been DE shaving since I was 12;now 34. The Astras have worked for me for about two years. The carton I ordered recently, are the new Astras. For me they give the same great shave, but they do not have the pesky glue dots like the old ones did. The waxy glue is less, and doesn't gunk up my 1955 Gillette Tech. Looking forward to seeing your review on the new Astra's.
They've changed again. They are back to printing the blades. Just got a pack in. Made June 2020. Wax paper now has superior platinum and astra on them. And now all the tucks of 5 have manufacture date on the side flap of the packs.
How are they performed now with the new style? Green package blades were too harsh for me. I have the same problem with any made in Russia blade; Astra, Rapira, Permasharp etc...
@@ozmobozo they're the same blade. You can try "stropping" blade in inside of your forearm or "corking" the new blade. Many find this better as it simulates the first shave so your real first shave is like the second.

It was a toss up between these and Feather... These are a lot better on my face because the feather blades are just too sharp.

Thanks for that. I started shaving with a double edge safety razor not so long ago so your videos helped a lot. And since the Astras SP are the ones that work the best for me I was worried when I got them with the lazer etching. Now I feel better. I did try the feathers after a month of shaving with the safety razor but they destroyed my neck, I almost bled out... LOL.
I found Astra blades give a smoother shave than the Feather blades I have. There may be manufacturing variations that explain the differences but the Feather blades do cost over 3X more than the Astra blades. I've watched a lot of reviews claiming how sharp the Feather blades are. The sharper blade should feel less of a pull, not my experience with Feather blades.
Thanks for the heads-up, very good information to know. I just picked up an Astra Platinum 5-pack as part of a sample pack, and so far I really like them. They are of the numbered vintage, and I look forward to getting some of the newer blades to see if there is a difference in the shave. I bought some recently and there is no writing on the blades but they work very well and I don’t see why anyone would bother making counterfeit blades that cost around $10 a hundred.
If you prepare well before shaving, this razor (green astra) will show Feather feature. comfort is of medium quality. It is suitable for daily shaving if used on docile machines such as Mühle R89. In aggressive ones like R41, you need to have a beard for at least a week.
I really like both the platinum and stainless but I have to remember to be sure and let my whiskers grow out for 3 days before using either blade because their both very sharp.
Great update, thank you. I remember a few years back they went from the printed paper in individual blades to the thinner non-printed paper. I heard Pol-Silvers were stopping production, or already have to stop the counterfeiting of their product as well. Sad some people have to that.
The first time i used a DE razor blade i used Feather blade and wow lots of nicks and a few cuts from that super sharp blade. Bought a sampler pack of Astra Superior Platinum and Stainless steel wow major difference. I still get a close shave but less irritation and nicks.

James R I've tried them in a crappy weishi, and awesome Jager. Tried two different packs of feather, same results under my chin. I don't truly understand why there is any difference in a these blades to be honest.
Same thing happened to me but with Derby extra. The packages were different when they arrived then the ones I had before. Counterfeit? Maybe? I’ll really know when I try them in a few weeks.

the simple negligible fact that after JUST ONE SHAVE the only side that is letter marked is almost wiped out and i can hardly read the letters also helps the blade to be impossible to counterfeit .
people on amazon are going nuts on the new change. they swear the quality is worse. I'm pretty sure It's just a matter of psychology. they look different so people assume they perform different and any perceived difference in performance no matter how small is definitive proof of their change in quality.
Ive been using Astra Superior Platinums for almost 10 years now and just shaved with these new blades. The pack was just purchased off Amazon in April 2022. Usually a new ASP blade will give me 3 or 4 perfect shaves but the new blade on the first shave felt like I'd been using it a week. Rinsing my face off with water told the story, as it stung like hell. That never happens with the old blades. I thought the Amazon reviews were going to be wrong but after this I'm a believer. These blades are NOT the same quality as the old ones.
I share the same experience as you. I tried those Astra Greens from a sample pack and it was one of those newer laser etched ones. And well it’s the worst de blade I ever used it’s straight up garbage. I kind of want to order some of them from Amazon so I can leave a 1 star review and tell people not to buy them. I’m telling you this left me with the worst razor burn ever and it didn’t even give me a baby smooth finish. After I shaved I used my Osma Alum block and yeah I could really feel the sting. I’m telling you from the sample pack I tried those Ladas blades might be the dullest or smoothest blades I’ve used it took lots of passes to get a baby smooth finish but was one of the most irritation free shaves I’ve had. The Ladas are better and as far as I can tell those aren’t sharp blades.
Those 1 star experiences from Amazon are true. It makes me wonder if the Astra Greens were this bad can anything be worse? Maybe the Astra blues are laser etched too and even more terrible?
Geo, please test the new Astra blades. The German forums-members know the press-information from Gillette . But although we know it there are a lot of people that say the new Astra doesn't work very well. I hope you as a professional shaver would prove this. Please let us know your results.
The old with the black letters were my absolute favorite. Unfortunately the new laser engraved are cutting good but they are rougher. Not as "sweet" gliding. Not so forgiving. Not the same shaving experience for me.... Looking forward for Geofatboy test results

I'm new to DE shaving. I've been wonder about stropping. I get they're super cheap and replacing them is no big deal(one of the reasons I switched over to DE from those crazy expensive cartridges). Is it possible to strop these blades?
geofatboy not really, I can get as many as three good shaves out of one single blue blade, but only one as much sharp as the KAI which is my favorite. My coarse beard requires stainless blades as platinum blades cannot perform very well on me.
The only experience I've had with Astra Platinum was a 5-pak, and two of the blades were "duds". The other three were stupendous, on par with the 100 Personna Med Prep that I am working through. Has anyone else had a problem with Astra duds?
That IS hard core! Anyway, thanks for this video. I suspect that there might be a placebo effect with blades. Perhaps people lose their technique a bit when they don't have confidence in one. This may account for the YMMV shaver's axiom.

With astra platinum i can use my straight razor at almost any angle and they never cut me. feather blades are sharper but i have to use a specific angle that i have not figured out yet. astras might even be sharper
GEO! You have to change your lighting, man. You've got your lights set up so that half the products you hold up to the camera get GLARE and can't be seen by the viewer!! This is really counterproductive for a product review site. You need to find a photographer/videographer friend who can take a look at your setup and tell you how to correct it. It looks to me like you're using a ringlight placed in front of you, which illuminates your face fine but causes everything that's white or bright to reflect right back into the camera. A person knowledgable about lighting could fix that for you in a jiffy. With all the videos you do, this is something you really should fix.
I''ve used ASTRA Platinum since 2012. This new version is TERRIBLE. It's MUCH THINNER, nicks at the corners and misses all over on 1st pass. I NEVER had these problems before in over 600 blades! It's a P&G ploy to increase purchases of their (Gillette) plastic multi-blade nonsense. BOYCOTT P&G!
It cuts fine for the people who like it. I think it works great, and I would use that one unless I wanted to use a Feather blade on a certain day, like shaving a whole beard off.
That isn't the point, David. You missed it. They are wasting time and money changing something, that does not need to be changed and offers the consumer no benefit. While I am not a blade flipper, this really messes with how they do things and they get absolutely zero benefit from it, only grief. Explain to me how better engravings on a blade you use maybe 5 times and then throw in the disposal bin, helps me as a consumer.
My guess is they invested in some new machinery that probably just does the laser engraving since printing isn't really state of the art anymore. This also might explain the differences some users are experiencing, since the new machine is still being fine-tuned or something.
My favorite razor. Geo, I thought same thing, what the what??? Then, I tried and they worked great. Now, on to my Dovo and learning curve. You've helped inspire!

A trick that works is dipping your razor in hot warm water and the wax will come out

My Merkur 34C HD performs very smooth and gentle with this Astra Superior Platinum. Feathers are bit mercy less but does job well.

Astras (both; blue are a bit sharper but I prefer greens) are golden standard. Very sharp and very safe. Great blades.

They’re amazing and by far the best blades I’ve ever used. They’re so smooth, I never cut myself while shaving anymore and are very well priced
I never used the old print style ones but i like the nee ones. I dont see how it should make a difference.
With astra platinum i can use my straight razor at almost any angle and they never cut me. feather blades are sharper but i have to use a specific angle that i have not figured out yet. astras might even be sharper
GEO! You have to change your lighting, man. You've got your lights set up so that half the products you hold up to the camera get GLARE and can't be seen by the viewer!! This is really counterproductive for a product review site. You need to find a photographer/videographer friend who can take a look at your setup and tell you how to correct it. It looks to me like you're using a ringlight placed in front of you, which illuminates your face fine but causes everything that's white or bright to reflect right back into the camera. A person knowledgable about lighting could fix that for you in a jiffy. With all the videos you do, this is something you really should fix.
Multi blade throw away razors are not For me. A lot of ingrown hairs. Mono . That s the one for me. Or BIC metal. Stop

I''ve used ASTRA Platinum since 2012. This new version is TERRIBLE. It's MUCH THINNER, nicks at the corners and misses all over on 1st pass.
I NEVER had these problems before in over 600 blades!
It's a P&G ploy to increase purchases of their (Gillette) plastic multi-blade nonsense.

Lol why waste time changing the engraving of all things when you could just make it cut even better. It baffles me.
It cuts fine for the people who like it. I think it works great, and I would use that one unless I wanted to use a Feather blade on a certain day, like shaving a whole beard off.
That isn't the point, David. You missed it. They are wasting time and money changing something, that does not need to be changed and offers the consumer no benefit. While I am not a blade flipper, this really messes with how they do things and they get absolutely zero benefit from it, only grief.
Explain to me how better engravings on a blade you use maybe 5 times and then throw in the disposal bin, helps me as a consumer.
My guess is they did it to save money on ink. When you're printing millions of blades annually, small things add up to big $

My guess is they invested in some new machinery that probably just does the laser engraving since printing isn't really state of the art anymore. This also might explain the differences some users are experiencing, since the new machine is still being fine-tuned or something.
