So far i've tried 10 different brands of blades and Feathers are the sharpest of them all. For me that's the second best blade and I use it mostly on my milder and non aggressive razors. My go to blade for every razor is the Polsilver Super Iridium. It's slightly less sharper than Feather, but it's a lot smoother, long lasting and cheaper.

    • @BennyCFD
      @BennyCFD 6 років тому

I agree. Though feather might be the sharpest (not by much) than other blades it really doesn't have the smoothness of a Polsilver, or Perma Sharp,

First feather shave today on my merkur 23c, felt amazing, especially with a slick lather..... i used arko. Def less irritation than with my regular persona blades that i normally use. Will stick with feathers from this point forward, great shave and feedback after splashing on some aftershave.

it really depends whether I am on a day to day shaving routine or have a couple of days "off". day to day I prefer something more smooth but after a couple of days of no shaving feather certainly gives a terrific result. but that's just me with quite sensitive skin.

This is my standard shave. Rockwell 6S, 3 plate, Feather Hi-Stainless. Mitchell’s Wool Fat, Speick splash.
I have many soaps from Stirling, B&M, Soap Commander, Shaving Shop. I always come back to The Fat. Merkur 34C, Rockwell 3 plate, Timeless scallop bar...Feather is smooth in all my shavers.

100% agree!! They are the sharpest I’ve used too. I don’t use them in a 1st shave with a new razor because I’m concerned that I’ll have multiple nicks. I still use all kinds of blades but no matter what other blades I’m using, I always have a feather close by

I just switched from a Gillette 5 blade disposable to a Merkur 34c safety razor. I did quite a bit of UA-cam and internet research to include watching your videos prior to purchasing. For me the feather blades in the Merkur 34c at least was a very smooth shave. Smooth enough I had to look and feel to make sure I was holding the razor correctly so the blade would cut. Sure enough 2 days of growth in one pass gone. I've never had that smooth of a shave with any disposable regardless of cost. Granted this is all subjective to my face and facial hair but the combination definitely works for me. I want to try straight razor shaving next. Thanks for the helpful videos.

Been wet shaving for six months……using a Rockwell 6C and Gillette Slim. My go to blades have been Nacet, Astra SP, and Voskhod. Had two Feather blades in a sample pack but was apprehensive to try one. Read too many horror stories about their scary sharpness and tendency to nick or irritate skin badly. Finally got around to trying one two weeks ago in my 6C on R3. Took my time, was very careful….and got a great shave. Got 6 shaves out of the blade although I could have gotten one or two more. Ordered 50 of them this week on eBay. To me….it’s not an every day blade…..but a good one to use on special occasions when you want a super BBS outcome. You have to be careful with a Feather and respect it’s sharpness. Not like shaving zip-zop with one of my trusted Voshkies.

Feather lay at my 2nd place after KAI, but not so far from being at 1st place. Since I am not sure about the long-term side effects on health of coating (Platinum, Iridium,....) I must reward more coating-free blades therefore I must put at first place KAI as they are pure stainless. Very good video indeed. Tx!

Hi Nick! Great review of Feather blades. As with anything wet shaving, YMMV. Personally, they feel like a hacksaw blade on the first use and their longevity is short...2 or 3 four pass shaves. I have a stash of vintage blades that are smooth and have the longevity for 8 to 20 four pass shaves. However, for the money...Astra SP works a treat.

I like Feathers. If not carful the first use can be a bit abrasive for me. The second and third are awesome and in the trash after the third. The three best blades for me are Polsilver's, Personna Red's and Feathers. I should do a blind test to see if I could put those 3 in order of my favorite, but all are excellent performers for me. Thanks for the review/ video and glad to see them coming!

I like Derby`s, or as I have come to call them: DERPY blades, because I shave twice as fast with them hehe.
I`m new to the DE scene, but I`ve tried quite a few blades, during some different circumstances now, and my scandinavian fluff, really seem to want a mild blade, unless I go 2-3 days without shaving, then a feather does me well in the Merkur 42c.
I have my second razor coming some time next week, new year, new razor!
    And a best badger brush..
Apparently it`s a bit more aggressive than the 42c, which I think I will like, as I find myself using some pressure with the 42c to get a close shave, unless I wait for as mentioned, 2-3 days.
I think it might be because until now I have been using proraso foam, and not a brush, so my hairs while short, haven`t been standing well, leaving me using pressure due to lack of contact with the mild razor.
Unless using the feathers, which are not everyday blades for me, leading me back to the 2-3 days situation hehe.
I think a slightly more aggressive razor, with mild blades will be good for me, but I`ll keep watching shave videos, all info is good info, and based on the reviews here on youtube I also decided to try the TOBS sandalwood soap.
Good thing so many guys have been making these videos, sharing experiences and making reviews on products so I can shorten my trial and error process, even though it apparently has led me to get one of the more expensive soaps, both my razors and the brush are very affordable, so I figured I wanted a goad soap to start with, even though I`m pretty sure I`ll end up with some kind of collection as time passes.
Thanks for making shave videos, giving noobs like me a bit of experience to go by ;)

Nice review Nick! Feather blades are definitely my favorite DE safety blades. I find the sharpest razor blades, and for that matter, the sharpest kitchen knives are the safest by far.
Lately I've been playing around testing how the razor's weight effect the nature and quality of the shave. Maybe you've got something to demonstrate and possibly say about how the razor's weight effects the nature and quality of the shave.

I agree Nick the Feather is a nice sharp blade BUT it depends on or in what razor you use I use the Feather AS-D2 stainless steel body for the best shave. I have tried other razors such as Merkur Muhle Parker Rockwell and so forth but none of the others give me a really close shave as the AS-D2. If you get some irritation afterwards I find Thayers Medicated anti pain witch hazel to finish and Nivea balm. My next pick to the Feather blade would be the Rapira LUX which comes fairly close to the Feather for efficiency. For the record I have a very coarse bristle and have to shave with a semi frozen right shoulder so the efficiency of less passes is important to me.

I have been revisiting the feather and yeah they are sharp but not so smooth. I found like you that a 4 plate on the Rockwell 6 S/C and a light touch will give a pretty smooth shave. Skin was BBS and cool to the touch. I do have to be more careful not to start doing any sudden changes in grain on that first pass though, the edge is not 'buttery enough' to allow any 'stunt shaving'
I have a shit-ton of these feathers so I need to use 'em more. Still, for my money though, the GSB and Nacet give far more comfortable shaves and are up there in sharpness. I really prefer these Gillette as they work in just about every razor I own.

I'm no expert and relatively new to de. However I vouch my feathers seem sharper than the other blades I received with my new razor. In fact, I managed to Nik my face on first few uses. But, I've learnt to go easier and I get many shaves out of one blade. I keep the Single blade clean and dry after each use, when I clean razor after a shave and that's all. Yeah good blades very sharp. Gives a great shave always alongside my 34c.

For me, Feathers are as good as it gets when I have a few days growth and have been too lazy to shave. If I have any irritation already, not happening. I am slowly working through a 100 pack. That said, Feather Pro blades in an Artist Club type razor are a totally different animal, very mild and smooth. Love those when I have irritation and need a smooth, irritation free shave.

I agree they are sharp but not that much sharper than the DE blades you mentioned at the end of the video. However I think Perma Sharp is nearly as sharp but are smoother to shave with. More comfortable. And for me overall smoothness and comfort trumps absolute sharpness. I have several vintage Gillette razors from flare tips, open combs, safety bars, adjustable.
And Perma Sharp works well in all of them.

All depends on the razor. It’s extremely smooth in a Rockwell but in others it gives me a little irritation. Polsilver, Kai and permasharp are alot smoother. Gillette silver blue is next and after that would be voshkod and astra. In that order.. but that’s just for me. Everyone’s face is different

I've just tried one, and it's certainly the best blade for me. I have very little facial hair, but what I do have is very very coarse and like barbed wire - especially on my chin. Most blades I have to keep going back and forth trying to mow it down, but with these? Nope. A couple of passes on my chin, and it's BBS. Remarkably, considering their sharpness, this blade also gave me the least irritation out of any blade I've ever used. Possibly because they're so sharp, so require less back passes etc.
This is clearly the best blade for me.

I got the SOC brush for Christmas last year and it quickly became my favorite shaving brush. It is my first wood handled shaving brush and I find that I am extremely cautious about getting the handle wet. Is this a concern that I should have, or can the wood handle getting wet/soaking?

    • @sgrdddyshaves
      @sgrdddyshaves 6 років тому

It will hold up just fine getting wet during the shave. Just towel dry the handle when you're done and don't let it sit in water when stored.
As far as soaking, I would just soak the bristle part and not the handle.

I've never cared for razor blade reviews. Unless reviewing the actual craftmanship of the blade - why bother? Every razor blade is different on every one's face. One guy's best blade is crap to another. Once I found my blade (after tons of searching) I bought a box of 200 and never looked back. I gave all my samples to a friend for him to find the one that works for him. What do I think of Feather blade? They didnt work for me. They tore my face up and just gave me irritation and razor burn. The blade that works for me is the 7 O'Clock Super Stainless. I'm sure my blade sucks on someone else. :) Still love your videos though.

Depends on what razor you use. Finding a pairing a razor and blade combo that does what ya want it to do can take a bit also you might find yourself wanting a 2 razor shave one mower and a finisher but to each their own

I have tried more than possibility 30 different blades. I barely can tell their different. The only thing I notice is their longevity for example I found feather is good for me for 5 to 7 shaves while others brands can go up to 4 to 5 shaves only. Sharpness wise, I really can't tell the difference in the first 3 shaves.

Blades are one of those "YMMV" things. Give 10 of the top 10 so called best blades to 10 different people you will get ten different best blade answers. It is funny when I started a year and a half ago and it was suggested I get Feathers as a blade and of course I did. By the time they showed up I had done some research and had read about how sharp they are and thinking "what did I get myself into switching to DE shaving". They took a while to show up through Amazon and I found Wilkinson Sword Classics at the local drugstore and found them to be a great blade. I feared the Feather when they showed up but found they are no more sharper then what I had tried at that point. They are just not that smooth for me. I even bought 100 of the holy grail Voskhod and couldn't make it through the first pass. Give the Gillette 7 o'clock Permasharp Stainless a try. My sharp and smooth blade and think they are better then Feather. But then again that is JMO.
    Thanks for the review.

Any chance of doing a review or possibly you may have a suggestion on a good boar hair brush. I am currently using a Semogue 1250 Natural Boar Bristle which is nice but may want something better. Badger hair brushes cause issues for me. Thanks!

Jim Thomas try a synthetic. Super soft and great backbone. No break-in required. I love boar, badger and synthetics. My go to is synthetic though. I sell them at low prices on Etsy including shipping www.etsy.com/shop/EverShave. But if you're looking for boar brush the semogue 830 is amazing once it's broke in.

Very sharp blades, but not necessarily what I'm looking for. I don't use Feathers much. My two favorite blades of all time are Gillette Platinum and Astra SPs.

Amen that Feather is the best. Started using them as early as possible when I switched to DE razors. "Smooth" blades like Voshkod just doesn't do it for me. Give me my sharp Feathers! :)

Dale just red what you said just try with a d e razor its more about technique, even a cartridge razor can cut you ,a tip for you when shaving with a d e razor make sure your face is lubricated, when you shave use short downward strokes never sideswipe it is far cheaper than those cartridges I Learned about later in life and I wished I did this earlier don't waste this opportunity you won't regret it.

I'm late to the party. But here's something unexpected: Feathers are actually nicer for my hyper-sensitive skin, which turns red or has irritation-pimples in no time. The point is that Feathers require me far less work to get it right. Two gentle yet accurate passes is enough. And I can even afford a third pass. I'm not even calmly shaving anymore, just making sure the "technique" is right. Pressure, speed, no lateral movement. I had Astra green's. It was too often bit of a fight. Not anymore. Using Merkur 34C and cheapo (5 euro) shaving cream.

Not best but sharpest. I use their single edge version in my Valet Auto Strop for clean up and back of my neck after a straight razor shave. They last a long time that way. Hard not to get a weeper with a fresh blade though.

Hi Nick. I love Feather blades, but the reason why I watned to comment is that I think your hairstyle is really handsome. With that being said, how long is your hair on the sides and on top? Regards.

I agree that Feather are the sharpest blades on the market, but they are also by far the most uncomfortable blades I have ever used, no matter in which razor.

The feather blade does give me only 3 good shaves, my beard is killing the sharpness way too fast for that price. But i understand why many people love this blade 👍

Still looking for MY blade for the 34C HD. Have tried PolSilver, 7O'clock SharpEdge and Gillette Silver Blue. The Silver Blue was acceptable, while the others were just so-so after four passes.
I seem to do much better using the Merkur 25C (open comb) with a Derby Extra, or most any blade!
What do you like with the 34C?

Craig Michelson What works best for my 34c hd so far are Gillette 7 o'clock, Astra super blades, and feather, but then again the Merkur 34c is a very mild razor and honestly i will replace it soon because I have a thick beard and grows back really fast, I feel you man, I'm gonna get a open comb razor too, maybe a muhle r41 or rockwell 6c, gl on finding your blades 😎

  • @fallofdutee

No doubt they are the sharpest and initially glide through stubble, BUT they draw blood far too easily. Skin type plays a big part in shaving. I will try one once in a blue moon with over 100 stashed away. Gillette sharpedge, and Silver Blue are the ones I use now. Trying Gillette permasharp (Indian) Green soon. I've tried many blades and Derby are amongst the worst, so it shows that blades is the most subjective topic and the only way to know is try them yourself as the razor plays a massive part also! Enjoy experimenting everyone!
