  • After more than 30 years of sitting unused, we took the first steps to begin our 1946 Spartan Manor renovation with hand scrubbing our aluminum camper. We honestly didn't expect much given its original state, but we were in for a surprise! I also cover some of our obstacles of trying to get the first wash complete (no pressure washer yet, no water hookup, no ladder), and what to expect from the next few episodes.

You have a diamond in the rough. Not only will the mold and tree resin come off, but you can now "wheel it out," with a certain sanding pad on a buffer, find out which one as there are many grades and thicknesses, and get that aluminum back shiny as an Airstream/Spartan should be. Cleaned up they bring 60-70 thousand in some areas of the country. Collectors will pay you well for a Spartan. If nothing else, I am glad to see one saved, as they are a unique piece of history. Spartan was an aircraft company, which put out a great product. Spartans were one of the first mobile homes, and because of that they are licensed as a mobile home, meaning unlike tiny houses and park model trailers, they can be set up on land legally, or in mobile home parks. This is the wonderful part about a 1950's mobile home, that they can legally be set up in a mobile home park, and can still be pulled by a truck, getting around the mobile home movers high prices. The mobile home movers now have a new insurance required, raising the cost of moving a mobile home up so high that it caused a shut-down of half of the mobile-homes-sells companies, and creating the new "tiny house."

@@UglyDucklingHouse , Did you actually read my comment? I wasn't saying anything good about the mobile home industry crashing, but was stating that Spartans get around the new expensive movers insurance for mobile homes which caused the price hike, ending in half the mobile home business going under.
the Spartans are licensed as a mobile home, but not the Airstreams, meaning they can not be set up on land, or in mobile home parks like the Spartan. There are others licensed as mobile homes from that era, Vagabond, Lighthouse Duplex, New Moon [what Lucille Ball has in one episode of their show which made those famous,] and a list of about 20 kinds of different brands of 1 bedroom, some 2 bedroom but more rare, of 1950's mobile homes. The one Jim Rockford lives in, and is his office, the character on Rockford Files, also a one bedroom, and in one episode his father is moving his mobile home with his old truck, not a mobile home mover.

It's neat that Spartans are considered mobile homes and can be set up on land legally. That's good info to know about our Spartan that I didn't know before. I glossed over the whole mobile home industry part of your comment because it's a side topic that I don't have much concern for right now. We are a long way from having this fully restored so we're eating this elephant one bite at a time.

I came across this video while learning how to wash my airstream - for obvious reasons don’t wash your aluminum trailer in this method. Just watch some of these videos.and you’ll see what I mean. But this is a great story........I wish them great fun and adventures with their heirloom family treasure. I look forward to seeing how things progress!

      1) there's a playlist of all Ruby videos so far on my channel (mentioning it because your comment is not on the latest video) 2) There are a bunch of in-progress clips on my Instagram that haven't been made into a video yet (both polishing and the demo of the interior). 3) Both of those new videos are about halfway through editing so I'm hoping to release them this quarter (by end of March). I had a baby this past fall so once he was born we didn't get back out to the property for any additional developments on top. But you can see the start of demo as well over on my blog (sort of a smaller update until the video is finished).
