You polish that baby up it will shin up like a 💎...Love those Spartan Trailer's! You coming along and looking great!
Thanks Jim! We’re making slow progress but it’s such a fun and exciting project. I’m learning so much as we go!
Hey Sarah! I used to professionally detail all kinds of vehicles. When doing the final polish you may find using a microfiber cutting pad for the polisher and a liquid metal polish such as Chemical Guys Heavy Metal Polish. That combo can cut quickly and effectively leaving a mirror finish behind! Good luck with the project. Can’t wait for the next videos!
Thanks for the info! Much appreciated.
Just a tip when you connect your safety chains when hooking up the trailer, it is good practice to cross them (X) that way if the tongue popped off the ball it will land in the crossed chains, or in your case cables, and not do a nose dive into the road. Not a big deal just added security, sometimes the chains are not long enough to do that. Good video.
Noted, thank you! Still learning good tips. Appreciate it.
The unpolished patina was lovely. It reminded me of a Sparton Manor kept at the Oregon coast decades ago.
Here's some info that might be helpful to you. All the 46 Spartan Manor's had an aluminum skin floor, 47 & later were plywood. The 1946 vin will read 25 for length, 46 for year & a 4 digit production number, mine is 1506 & the tag is located in the front door jamb under the top hinge. The original wheels were a 16" split rim so don't feel bad about the ones you took off, they were from a Ford. The original 46 tongue jack was two sided rack-drive by Spartan, in 47 they started fitting a cheaper screw drive. On top they had 3 pop-up roof vents & a large teardrop fairing around the heater vent. The side marker lights were glass teardrop, two red & two amber. Here's some that will get you the right look at a fraction of the cost of originals, if you can even find them.www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_odkw=aircraft&_osacat=6000&_from=R40&_trksid=p2045573.m570.l1313.TR5.TRC0.A0.H0.Xteardrop+lights.TRS0&_nkw=teardrop+lights&_sacat=6000
I had to laugh when you said how easy it was to polish a spot on the trailer. Keep up the good work.
It won't be when we do the big polish! 😂
Loving this video series!! TY. Please, we need more RUBY videos.
Working on two more as we speak! The next video will be replacing the tongue jack and the next will be the results of our polishing efforts! Stay tuned because I have a lot of Christmas project content I HAVE to get live for my blog before I can cut more Ruby videos together. But they are definitely on the way!!
yay for ruby updates!
There is SO much more coming now that the camper is closer to the house! No more 4 hour drives!
Ugly Duckling House with Sarah Fogle i understand the feeling. I have a LOT of footage of our pop-up camper rebuild that I have to edit and post to UA-cam.
any updates on the spartan
Wow! You're making good progress with Ruby!
Thanks Bruce! Lots more on the way. Hopefully a few more before the end of the year!
Bruce, you kinda look like Ed Helms lol
@@truckingames6120 Ha! I've heard that before.
Looking good! 😃👍🏻👊🏻
Thank you!
Ruby will be stunning when she is polished
Thank you! It's looking SO good! We've been working on it weekly since this video was shot, and I can't wait to share!
@@UglyDucklingHouse and I can't wait to see!
I used to have a hot wheels box like that. . . Memories
Had to throw a little nostalgia in there. :)
I really wanted to see further progress but can't find any videos newer than 04 (this one) Do they exist somewhere I am missing them?
More videos are coming out, but E04 is the last one I uploaded. Soon!
It’s coming along great!
Thanks Caleb!
hi guys, on one hand I admire your courage to take on that project, on the other hand, I am wondering whether you shouldn't have started with checking the technical status of the trailer first ... like rust underneath, are understructure and frame after 70+ years still strong enough to carry the whole trailer, is the trailer tongue not too rusty to keep the trailer safely attached when driving (and braking ..) ... maybe you did so without mentioning it ... anyway, good luck with this project! ... by the way, i drive a 30 year old VW T3 Syncro (4WD) camper van, ex military, and had some surprises with this and other older vehicles.
We mentioned (I think?) during the episode where we moved the trailer out of the woods and putting the new wheels on that we checked a lot of these things to make sure it could be taken on the road. We worried a great deal about that!
Any more coming?
Yes: polishing, demo, and switching out the tongue jack are all separate videos coming!
Its been a year why arnt there any more videos on the camler remodel?
I had a baby and other projects took priority. Videos come out when I have the time to edit them.
@@UglyDucklingHouse oh ok just wondering
I have two more I'm trying to get out - one is about our first attempt at polishing and the other is about demoing the interior. I hope they'll be done soon! As soon as they're ready I'll post about it on all my socials.
Did you finish the remo??
Not yet but there are additional episodes after this one so you might want to check out the playlist. A new episode will be dropping soon.
I bet those old hot wheels are worth some money.
They are pretty "well-loved", so we think they may be too used (my understanding is that toy collectors will only spend the big bucks when they are on pristine condition).

Had a friend with old star wars toys he found that his mother had kept. He made some money. If I remember correctly, zep makes an aluminum cleaner. You mix it in a bucket and brush it on. Used it 20+ years ago so they might not make it anymore. It was a commercial grade cleaner. Watching y'all with ruby has had me searching for an old fixer upper. That would be a great little guest suite in the back yard! Good luck and looking forward to seeing more videos of ruby's progress.
Hey Sarah! I have the opportunity to buy an ugly duckling 1956 spartan royal mansion for $1000. Moss on the roof, probably water damage roof and floor. What do you think? Worth it or no?
Sorry, I don't seem to be getting all the notifications for my comments like I used to (not sure how to remedy that, just letting you know I'm just now seeing your comment!). I haven't finished rehabbing this thing yet and this is our first experience, so we are FAR from experts. If you have to repair the frame, taking the shell off can get really expensive. I think we got really lucky with ours because we know most of the history of it. If I were in your shoes, I'd probably look up info on how to thoroughly inspect it. Western/Southern states: could be in better shape. Northern states: these trailers got more exposure to road salt, so there could be more rust (I realize these trailers travel, but if they sat for long periods of time, the exposure could be different). Per Kyle: push on the sides and see if it gives (could indicate vertical frames broken). I just randomly Googled some of the prices for what fully restored ones sell for (if that's your goal), and they look pretty sweet! I wish you luck if you decide to buy and I'm envious of the extra length (ours is only 25 feet).
