Ive had diesels since 1996, and have had 3-6.7's through out 2011. Great motor by Ford. I decided to try the 7.3 since I am towing much less but still the same 11-16k loads. At first being a diesel guy I thought I made a huge mistake. It tows the same loads just takes a little longer to get up to speed and stop. The savings was 8k less upfront which we all know you get that back when you trade in...but the long term costs are less in filter changes, oil changes are 1/2, no DEF fluid...etc. I have 35k miles now and have owned the truck for 2 years...I will probably get another 7.3 in 2024. I really like it. My mileage is slightly less cause I leveled mine with a 3" progressive springs and shock from Carli and 37's...Looks like a Tremor on steroids. Towing the same 16k load I get 7.2 where's my 6.7 was getting 9.2-5 stock on 34's. Leveling and adding 37's cost me approx. 1-1.5mpg loss in fuel consumption in the real world. I think the 5 star tune in the 87octane heavy tow tune actually helps with power/torque as well as tranny tune for the loss of no exhaust brake.

I have been a diesel guy for years myself. I am going back to gas I think. I don't tow but I always have a max payload due to my truck camper. 💩 mileage with that big old brick no matter what motor I am running. Thanks for the info provided.

Checking prices on my 2021 F350 4x4 7.3 vs a powerstroke the powerstroke is only worth 5k more now despite costing 8k more (which this truck is worth 3-5k more than I paid new now lol)

I went diesel in 2015 hard to give it up while everyone said my emission system would give me lot of trouble it hasn't actually. The only thing ever done was put DEF in it that's it. I have no need to make more power has more than enough to tow with.

Sold. I’ve been looking at gas and diesel and for my 12k lb 5th wheel I’ve all but decided to go with 7.3 gasser. I’ve heard a new 7.3 more refined gas is coming.

I've had a 2022 7.3L 3.73 gearing F-350 fully loaded Lariat on order since December. I honestly can say, I do not expect this unit until October, and have a feeling I will be bumped to the 2023 model year. My 2010 F-150 was stolen out of my driveway over 2 years ago, and I have been driving my wife's hand-me-down, 2003, rusted out Dodge Caravan that each of our kids have driven prior to me, for the past 2 years. It's been good to me, and the only things that have suffered have been my ego, and my intimate life with my wife, as she jokingly states it's a turn-off to see me driving it. So please pray for me, that this vehicle I have on order comes sooner, rather than later.

I feel your pain. Simular story but mine occurred in 2021. Ordered a F350 7.3l, 3.73 rear on 2/4/21. Before the chip shortage was announced. It was to be delivered in 6 weeks. Chip shortage was announce a couple weeks later. Ford was good by me calling every week with status. By mid March they told me it was being built soon but w/o the needed chips. They also said they cut off orders for 21's early to finish up the backlog. I asked about just changing it to a 22' since they said there was not going to be any significant changes. The had no issues with doing that other than they could not quote me a price for a few weeks, but count on $2-$4k more. Dealer told me I'd lose the discount off sticker as well that I had on my 21'. The kicker was when he told me I'd go to the end of the line and it would be at least Dec. or Jan (best guess) to see it. I told them I'd wait for my 21'. It was delivered 9/1/21; 7 months. Heaven only knows what it would have been for the 22'?

Just did our annual 5K mile trip to Tucson across the plains states and over the mountain passes. 7.3 with 4.30's. Pulled very nicely. Pulled grades at 2K RPM that our previous 6.2 couldn't hold (at that RPM). 9.1 MPG average for the trip. Pulling a 11.5K fifth wheel. The 6.2 did the trip twice (2018 with 4.30's) and did 8.3 and 8.4 MPG. He is right one the money about the torque curve. The 2,000 to 2,500 RPM sweet spot is much more robust. The 10 speed is a BIG plus. IMO, the 6.2 would benefit hugely from a 10 speed; so get the F350 with the 6.2 to get the 10 speed.

Boss was the better engine platform that needed more cubes.

Compared to $2k on f250, the 7.3 is a $1700 option on the f350, because the 6.2 comes with the 10 speed (f350 only as of now). And those who want a bigger gas tank need to opt for the long bed crew cab to get the 48 gal tank. 👍

I own both, 2015 6.2 over 200k one valve springs, set of spark plugs, thats it, 2021 7.3 just rolled 40k no issues. I pull loads close to 20k lbs with both. Yes the 7.3 does out pull the 6.2 with that said, its not day and night. The 6.2 holds its own for sure. Now I do not like the 10 speed, its not near as smooth as the 6. The 6 down shifting is stronger smoother more accurate. my 10 speed has to think about whats its doing and sometimes jolts the truck. Off road applications my 6.2 walks around my 7.3, not even close both trucks are 3.73 rear ends. I drive with common sense, I'm in no hurry usually, but when merging onto interstate the 7.3 beats the 6.2 hands down, as for mileage, I wish I was getting his mileage on the 7.3. Pulling 20k lbs expect around 6 mpg at 65 mph. in 8th gear. Daily driving I'm seeing arouind 12. If you occassionly pull a load I'd go 6.2. I was laughed at for not buying diesel when I got my 6.2 but I saw the dpf issues, turbo issues, cost of repair etc and it was a no brainer. I've owned every diesel out there except the druamax and I have no regrets, I was diesel when it wasn't cool, 1st gen dodge. They all pulled big loads. Hands down my gas jobs cost less to operate. If you want to know why ford came out with the big gas its because the big fleets asked for it, they were tired of the diesel issues and cost to maintain. Ford answered and now cummins I hear has a gas inline. Remember the 300 ford six banger, it was a torque beast, some things always come full circle.

I ended up with a 2021 F250 with the 6.2 v8 and 6 speed tranny. That motor is fantastic. It it smooth, easy and fast revving. I tow a travel trailer at 7,000 lbs and it does it extremely well. I did hit a very long, steep grade North of Chattanooga TN last year and it ran 4,700 RPM to keep the truck/trailer at 54 MPH. Comparing this motor to the class C RV with the 6.8l v10 I used to have, it would run 4,500 RPM to run 45 MPH up mountains. But, my next truck, which hopefully wont be for years, would be the 7.3l.

I have a 2019 f250 with the 6.2. I found one with 4:30 gears. I live and work in the mountains of southwest Virginia. I pull my tool trailer (around 10,000 lbs) an average of 3 times a week. I also own a 2004 6.0 power stroke, and a 2004 5.9 Cummins. The 19 pulls as good or better than my older diesels. I am getting better mileage not towing than you are, but your towing mileage is the same as mine. I like the 6 speed transmission. If I lived in flat lands I would opt for the 3:73s, but in the mountains the 4:30s are a no brainer. I would like to try the 7.3, but I'm leery of the 10 speed transmission. I will probably get another 6.2 with 4:30s when the time comes. I just wish we could have a manual transmission in the super dutys again!

Ya stay away from the 10 speed with the 6.2. The red line on the 6.2 is too high, and the rpm drop between 1st and 2nd is too wide--
Of course between the other gears too, but between 1st and 2nd it feels like an old 2.45/1.45 drop in any of the old three speed automatics..... Needs closer spacing for that 6.2's power curve. doesn't feel good when you're really on it, and we had a 10 speed go out in a work truck at like 50,000 miles. Same trans in a 7.3 work truck has over 100k on it, but the rpm drop is much closer cause of the lower redline ....

That torque curve chart reminded me why I'm reluctant to turn loose our 2008 superduty V10. 80% of the torque is available at 2200 rpm and max torque 457 lbs is at 3250 rpm. With 4:10 gears and the 5 speed trans it tows our sub 5000 lb camper easily. 13-14 mpg average not towing, 9.5 mpg towing. Driving with a light foot and keeping the factory tire size with low rolling resistance highway tread is the key to getting reasonable mpg.

Did the jobs that I wanted it to do without any problems but you werent going to win any races. The 7.3 is in a completely different league than the 6.2, there is so much more torque at every rpm range. It is a blast to drive and I have a hard time keeping my foot out of it, puts you back in the seat and the sound of the engine is phenomenal. Could not see myself ever going back to a diesel unless my towing needs change drastically. 7.3 for the win.

He upgrade from 6.2 to 7.3 seems like a no brainer, both for the mileage over the life of the truck and for resale if you like new trucks regularly. The 7.3 was designed from the start to be used (in a defined form) in commercial vehicles.
The upgrade from the 7.3 gas to diesel seems like a good idea only if you really need the torque, such as towing a big 5th wheel or hot-shotting for a living.
Thanks for the real world comparison! I bet collecting and compiling all that information was time consuming.

I used to pull a 4-horse trailer with full living quarters. My wife and daughter used to compete in the Quarter horse world, so there was a lot of down the road. The truck doesn't get a lot of use right now and just sits, but I keep it because it still runs like a bear when I have to haul something heavy. I still get 10 MPG when I'm hauling a load and I still get 10 MPG empty. I bought the truck to do a big job hauling which it did no problem. The 7.3 is fun to drive. I've got a 2022 F350 7.3, 4:30 gearing I bought sight unseen. I test drove the diesel (freight train) and an anemic 6.2 and ordered the 7.3 without having driven one, since there weren't any on the lots. Boy was I pleasantly surprised over my brief 6.2 experience. As others have stated, it's fun to drive on a daily basis. It's got the power down low where you want it. As I've built it out (adding weight), the driving experience has gotten better, smoothing out the ride, although it's probably a little slower. My use case was taking a travel trailer to Central Mexico for months at a time and clean diesel isn't always available there. I also worried about insane diesel repairs and maintenance, so I would have added an extended warranty to the cost of a diesel. Fun fact, Ford warranties work at Mexican Ford dealers, unlike Ram.

If I was ordering, I would get the 7.3 and 10 speed just to have it. My top preferences for ordering for towing would be 4:30 rear, 48 gallon gas tank and 10 speed. Extra gears are great.
    I'd love to see a comparison of a 7.3, 3.55 rear to a 6.2 with a 4:30. My 6.2 would tow a 7,500 pound trailer with ease.
For medium duty work, a 6.2 is great. If that's all you do, 7.3 is not really needed, wants vs needs.

The 7.3 Godzilla will be perfect due to the insane Diesel prices and will tow/haul typical landscaping trailers fine, though, I am yet to see one. So it's 6.2. My travel trailer only 4k weigh. Hopefully 6.2 and 6 speed trans helped better towing and off road also get more speed on uphill while tows. I know I plan to get F-350 crew srw diesel in future but can’t afford right now. Maybe in few years. After get bigger travel trailer.

I get the want for a diesel. Its exists mostly among buyers who dont deal with them as a profession. The 7.3 is by far the best gas option in the HD market as a diesel alternative. GM 6.6 would be the runner up and the 6.4 would be the 3rd best option. The 7.3 is a sensible work horse and far simpler than the other 2 gas options with alot more torque available earlier on where its needed most. And for those that work on their engines to maintain them will really appreciate the 7.3s simplicity. Think short block chevy(before direct injection and AFM/DFM). ITS LITERALLY 445 CI. I have 36,000 miles now on my first generation 10 spd Super Duty and have been very happy. Its a very aggressive transmission. It likes to perform. The more aggressive you drive the better. The negative? At times, occasionally, during low speed manuveurs where your coming off the throttle to prepare for a turn it doesnt know what to do. When its not completely warmed up yet youll get a similar reaction too.

Could not agree more. I have had my 7.3 for 6 months now. I tow at elevation (My home is at 4500 feet and I tow as high as 10000 feet above sea level), and this truck is more than I had hoped for. My trailer weighs 7500lbs and I also have an atv and generator in the truck bed. I have zero problems climbing hills at speed, and the transmission also does a good job at helping brake on descent. It is not as good as engine braking with a 6.7, but it is sufficient. I have yet to pull the most challenging canyon in my area, but that will be remedied in August. The canyon climbs from approximately 5800 feet to 10500 feet. The max speed limit while doing so is 30mph, but there are a dozen or so switchbacks with the speed limit dropping to 10mph, so the transmission will be put to the test. I did this pull last year with an ecoboost (3.5) minus the atv in the bed, and that is why I now own the 7.3.

I sold a 2004 Dodge Ram with the 24 valve Cummins and 3:73 gear to buy a 2022 F350 with the 7.3 Godzilla also with the 3:73 gear. I pull a 35 foot 5th wheel trailer that weighs in between 11.000 and 12,000 fully loaded. I have no regrets. The Godzilla gets about 1-2 MPG less daily driving and 2-3 MPG less towing than my old Cummins but with gas being usually $1 less per gallon than Diesel anymore the Godzilla still ends up being less expensive to operate and that is just from a fuel perspective, we aren't figuring in the additional maintenance cost of the diesel. The 1st and second gear ratios in the 10 speed are both lower than the 1st gear ration in my old Dodge so I really don't feel like It takes any longer to get off the line with the trailer. The torque and horse power the 7.3 delivers is really close to the old 24 valve Cummins. It was only 355 horse power and 525 ft lbs of torque compared to the 7.3 430 horse and 475 ft lbs of torque. However it is important to remember gearing has a lot to do with it and the 10 speed helps negate that loss of the 50 ft lbs of torque. If you really want to help the 7.3 do it's very best get the 4:30's. They will get you off the line even better under load. However the 4:30's won't do much when you're up to speed as the 10 speed is going to put you in the gear you need to be in to maintain the level of torque required to hold each load at speed. When on the two lane 55MPH roads with my 3:73's I can hit 10th gear but on the expressway at higher speeds of 70-75 MPH and creating more of my own wind resistance due to my high profile 5th wheel I usually lock out 9th and 10th. If it gets really hilly I lock out 8th and tow in 7th. She drinks a little more fuel but this negates the constant downshifting as you climb hills because at highway speeds in 7th gear she runs a little higher RPM and sits a little deeper into the torque curve so I can climb most hills in 7th with no trouble. If I try and stay in 8th, I'm either going to lose speed climbing the hill or the 10 speed is going to drop to 6th or sometimes as low as 5th gear to catch up, so I find it best to stay in 7th when the road isn't flat. The 10speed makes it easy to customize your tow experience. It took some getting used to going back to a gas after towing with a Diesel for 12 years but I am very pleased with the 7.3 so far.

The low rpm torque number of the Godzilla 7.3 400@1500 rpm is what gets your load rolling and will really come in handy while starting off on an incline.

I run 91 octane almost exclusively as the station with the best prices nearest to my home only offers 85 and 91. The 3.5 ecoboost has similar torque to the 7.3 at lower rpm but a bit less horsepower. It tows my setup very well with reasonable fuel economy. Just finished a 5000 mile trip and averaged 11.7 when towing. My reason for possibly upgrading is to get a heavier truck for a more relaxed experience in windy conditions and a higher payload. Thats the only reason i havent seriously considered upgrading to an F250. It's not a need at all. Its just a want. Lol

It's crazy how much more power the 3.5L ecoboost has than even a 460ci V8. I owned one of those, too. I can say that with experience.

My 2022 350 7.3 4x4 with a 4.30 rear end averages about 11.5mpg daily driving; I've yet to pull anything super heavy, but we're building out a tiny house on wheels that's gonna put it to work. We live somewhat rural so I get my stretches of 14-16MPG, but stop signs and lights will take the wind out of its sails with my setup. But that's understandable with my preferred buildout; I didn't buy this thing to save at the pump. Have about 6500 miles on it and it's been generally smooth so far. Looking forward to pulling more with it.

The unloaded MPG on the 7.3 is the selling point. Pretty sure the largest difference you're experiencing is the 10 speed transmission, not the 13% more torque of 7.3. Honestly I would have thought the 7.3 + 10 speed would edge out the 6.2 in towing MPG.

Broken exhaust manifold studs and 16 plugs to replace and the obligatory random dead coil on both Ford and RAM.

That max torque is reduced by the difference in final drive. At the rear wheels @1500 rpm the 7.3 can deliver 1420 ft-lbs, the 6.2 can do 1230 ft-lbs (assuming 1:1 in the gearboxes); the different transmission ratios will also make a difference. So while the 7.3 does deliver more, I suspect what you feel may have as much to do with the 10 speed, which will keep the engine in the “sweet spot” more of the time.
Also note that you’re not getting maximum torque unless the throttle is wide open. In reality, the torque actually generated is “enough” based on how hard you push the pedal, which is reflected in the lower non-towing fuel consumption.

I have the 7.3 pulling a Fifth wheel and it does very well. I average right at 9.0 mpg and the torque curve of the 7.3 with the 10 spd is really a no brained over the 6.2 with similar gearing. I think if diesel had not had gone Woke with emissions, I may have gotten a diesel. But no regrets of the 7.3 what so ever. In fact, I will not part with the truck even if the dealer offered me to this day $5k more than I paid and maybe not even $10k as they are a unicorn so to speak on finding at a decent price. I bought mine right before the whole truck scene went insane!

The 6.2 is 430 TQ, not 405. I think I would go $20,000 cheaper and buy a well taken care of V-10 with 460 Torque rather powerful throughout low-end (the Tritons have all been very Torque friendly). My '03 5.4 2 valve peaks at 350-360 @ 2,500 RPM and is a low revving engine for great low-end and longevity. I've always wanted a V-10 into 1st Gen Expedition.

    • @Joel_E
      @Joel_E 2 роки тому +1

You’re right about the torque figures. It was 405 prior to getting new cams for the 2017 MY. Now it’s 430. I drove a 2000 F-350 for years, and I always felt like the 2V 5.4 didn’t have enough power for towing and hauling. Some of that might have just been a lazy transmission, however. My current truck is a half ton with a 3V 5.4, which has plenty of power for what I’m doing with it. Then again, I’m not working it as hard as the Super Duty.
Love the looks of the first generation Expedition. If you could fit a 6.8 in there, that’d be sweet.

The only thing to stop me was it dug into the ground; acting as a brake. I noticed in a struggle it lost power and you have to get the RPM up there. My '01 Expedition was called "Bear".
