      And if many half-ton owners were honest, they could have made due with a mid-sized truck for their towing needs. Current mid-sized trucks are mostly the same size and capability as late 90s/early 2000s half tons. I personally think that the reason manufacturers have chosen to make mid-sized truck beds just slightly too narrow to flat load 4x8 plywood is because if they did make them wide enough, it would destroy their half-ton sales to those that don't need half-ton towing levels but end up needing to buy a half ton for weekend trips to Lowes for sheetrock and plywood.
      I know it sounds like a conspiracy, but notice that the only mid-sized truck whose manufacturer doesn't offer a half-ton, is also the only one whose bed can flat load 4x8 material, and up to 1580 lbs of it at that, which is actually in the range of what half-tons do depending on engine and trim options.

      Yeah dude and they drop price so quickly it's hard to justify buying brand new. Around here a 65,000 sticker truck can drop to 45,000 in 2 years.

    The maintenance and fuel issue is something people seem to overlook on diesel vs gas trucks. With the higher tow ratings of 1/2 ton trucks in recent years, the only real need for a 3/4 ton or larger is when your regularly crossing that 8k-9k tow rating, otherwise the 1/2 ton is a much better all around driver. The thing I noticed on the new F250’s is how tall they sit stock, even the bed is much taller than most 1/2 ton trucks. If you put material or even “”Costco” size groceries in the bed of an F250 FX4 you almost need a ladder to unload it. For a contractor or someone who regularly uses the bed for lumber, flooring, whatever, many of the 3/4 ton trucks are a pain to unload, period. Besides increased maintenance costs, fuel mileage is a consideration while NOT towing. If you actually drive the truck without a trailer regularly, the gas 1/2 tons usually get better fuel mileage. My GMC Sierra 5.3 gets 23-28 mpg on the highway, and doesn’t bounce all over the road like many diesel 3/4 ton trucks I’ve driven (without a load). I’ve considered buying a 3/4 ton truck to tow my boat which is 7,500 lbs (loaded), because it will tow better and with less effort. But if I managed to get my boat out say 15 times in one season (never, not possible) the diesel 3/4 ton would suck for the rest of the year, and when I’m not towing. If your a contractor and need to tow a skid steer or equipment around or a horse trailer (or a 5th wheel RV), a 3/4 or 1 ton truck is a necessity, but for the other 75% of diesel trucks running around, it’s just a waste of a truck, fuel, oil, and increased maintenance costs (injectors in new trucks are insanely expensive, so once your warranty is up your on the hook, sometimes upward for $1,000 each just for the part..., I’m in the parts business, it’s a fact). Everyone always claims that diesel trucks last so much longer it’s worth it- I call BS, the engine lasts longer (not without major maintenance on fuel systems and others), but what about the rest of the truck, like that 12” “awesome” touchscreen, how much do you think thats going to cost to replace at 101,000 miles? Because you know it will inevitably fail when the warranty runs out! (Murphy’s Law)👎 or wheel bearings, or that killer “10 Speed” transmission that only takes 10 quarts of super duper “synthetic” Gucci fluid? Diesel engines can go 300k plus miles, while the rest of the truck literally starts to fall apart at 125k miles...if you need it, you need it, MOST people don’t, they just want to look cool...

    I have a 2018 F-150 FX4 Supercab with a 5.0 motor. A few weeks ago I hauled a 2,000 lb' load in the bed of the truck. It was a heavy load for sure but the truck didn't feel overloaded. The load was plywood, loaded to the top of the bed, 1 more sheet would have been against the back window. The truck handled it fine. I drove empty 60 miles, picked up the load and went about 30 miles with the big load, unloaded all but about 200 lbs, drove that 200 lb. load another 60 miles and delivered it, another 40 miles home and averaged 19 MPG for the run. I love my truck!

    We went with both. My wife drives a 2019 f150 with 5.0L and I drive a 2018 f250 gas. Both are 4x4 XLT packages with crew cab and standard beds. Both are set up for bumper and gooseneck. The f150 is an awesome daily driver and pulls wonderfully up to about 4 tons total trailer weight. Anything above that and it all feels squishy (frame/suspension/tires) compared to the super duty. The f250 is an acceptable daily driver and feels great with 6 tons on a gooseneck, but is a tight fit in parking and is harder to maneuver in traffic. We leverage each trucks' strengths. When we go on a date, we take hers. When we move the cattle, she pulls the OK-corral and I pull the stock trailer with the cattle or when we maintain CRP ground, she pulls the side-by-side & sprayer and I pull the tractor & bat wing mower. It's a perfect match. When in doubt, get one of each!

      Robert Isaak Finally an objective comparison! We went with the F-150. We have a 32’ Jayco that is nominally loaded at about 7200 lbs. it grosses at 8200 I think. I def concur with you about the 8,000 lbs. Our truck pulls it NO problem (3.5 EB) but I’d def want a SD for anything much bigger. But for daily drive-ability for the 90% other times I drive it, I’m super glad I went with the F-150. Also, I HATE leaving my vehicles outside so, until we move to a place with a large detached barn or super-sized garage, it’s half-ton for me. Anyway, def appreciate the comment! 😊 I can def see a SD in my future one day. Love them both!!

      Just in case anyone reading this thinks they should buy a half ton for use with a gooseneck or fifth wheel, don't. The frame is not reinforced, braced, and gusseted like a 3/4 or 1 ton pickup. The torsional rigidity of an F150 frame is abysmal compared to an F250 frame (which is laughable because the F250 already has the weakest frame of the 3/4 ton trucks).
      Not to mention that most GNs and 5ers are nearly at, or sometimes above, the upper limits of a half ton while they're empty.
      And the MOST important thing was never addressed in this video - braking systems.
      If you're using a half ton with a gooseneck, you're probably autistic.

      Exactly, like you I have 150 & 350, night and day when it comes to towing.. Prefer the 150 around town, just easier to park and get around. On the road 350 all day

      @Vegas EMT go look up independent torsional rigidity frame tests. Fords fail miserably from front to rear. It's why core supports destroying themselves until 2012 when they redesigned the frame in the engine compartment was a real issue. Too bad they didn't fix the problems with the frame under the cab and bed until 2017. And no, they still don't stand up to their competition. You can see it in more testing, which should have been obvious when Ford announced they were finally boxing, but using less HSS.
      F150 brakes are not adequate simply because you turn up the gain to an ungodly level. You still need to be able to stop a trailer in the event of controller or brake failure. That's why the F250s already have brakes made to handle 3 times the weight (as evidenced by differences in pad sizes, caliper piston sizes, and rotor sizes). And that's BEFORE we get into supplemental systems like exhaust brake systems that make the gap even wider between the two. The parking brake must also be able to maintain position on a 7% grade without the aid of the parking pawl - something the half ton was not designed for.
      Also, did you just suggest the frames were upgraded and now potentially as strong as the competition while also suggesting that they were never weaker? Do you not see the irony?
      Furthermore, pin weight is NOT the only issue. Many GN or 5ers are already heavy enough to put an F150 at GCWR when they are EMPTY. My LIGHTEST GN only leaves 1,500lbs load capacity before being at an F150s GCWR. Uhhh... isn't that supposedly worse than the truck's payload capacity in the first place?
      There's far more than just brakes that go into GCWR ratings - truck weight, wheelbase, acceleration under load, gearing ratio and axle size, braking systems, transmission size, spring capacity, etc. The F150 is literally only an equal on one of those. They are not made to tow with GN or 5ers.

    The $10k price difference here is largely represented by the cost of the Diesel engine. Compare a similar F-250 with the 6.2 gas motor and the price difference suddenly becomes a lot narrower. And if you’re towing 9000 lbs the diesel is completely overkill. The 6.2 will do that just as easily as the 6.7 diesel. Ford’s 6.2 is a very good motor that doesn’t get nearly the respect it deserves!

      You must live at sea level. In the Colorado mountains, you will get rear ended by a semi when you are towing with a 6.2. The turbo part of the diesel is a great altitude equalizer.

    What most people fail to realize is that the weight of passengers, cargo and trailer tongue weight are all part of your payload. Add a family of 4, subtract 600 from 1500 and your down to 900 pounds, add in 200 pounds of gear, and your down to 700 pounds payload. At 10% tongue weight, you're 10000 pound rated truck went to 7000 pounds, still not bad, but passenger weight and cargo/luggage can go up too and you can easily top out at 5000 pounds or less. That same 800 pounds of cargo/passengers in the 3/4 ton from the video puts you at 1200 pounds of payload or 12k towing.

    I've downsized from the F350 6.7 turbo deisel right down to the f150 gas 5L coyote FX4. Although I could tow just a out anything with the 350, my 150 is much more comfortable for daily driving and I can still tow my fifth wheel with the f150 10,500 capability and the full tow package including engine break feature, large rear end (and mirrors). I love my f150 now. Like driving a car for comfort but can still do the heavy towing when needed.

    Had a f 150 10200 towing capacity towing a 8800 lb dry camper 5000 miles per year and no way could tow safely with weight transfer hitch.
    Now have a f250 with 15000 lb capacity and fell a lot safer no white knuckles, so now I am a BIG f 250 fan.

      Don Soucy completely agree. My buddy gave me his f350 srw to tow my camper (they take the camper out as a swap) it is just insanely different in the comfort and confidence in towing. Even my wife says how much of an improved difference it is just as a passenger. Yep... upgrading the truck next year... ;-)

      Don Soucy, that dry weight would be stretching my HDPP, and I wouldn't tow that with an off the lot 1/2 ton either.
      That weight is when you need a HD truck, but the upper limits of the most capable 1/2 ton is a 10,000lbs max weight trailer, if within all weigh limits...I wouldn't go any higher.

      1/2 tons aren’t really trucks anymore, as far as being used for work. But a 3/4 or 1 ton also drives more like one. The big American boat has been replaced by body on frame SUVs and 1/2 tons.

      That's my problem with my next Ford truck. I want something that tows but not diesel heavy duty towing. So that's why I'm interested in the Boss 6.2L or the Godzilla 7.3L.....but for a daily driver, all I need is a F150 Coyote 5.0L. But I do tow on the weekends that I would be more convenient & comfortable with a Super Duty.

      Yes, 2020 f250 7.3l gas 10 spd auto 6.5ft bed w/ tremor feature pack seems to be golden ticket for a long term household/family investment. Just never sell it. Pass it down to kids. Only concern I have is if some states go 100% EV in 15-20yrs....it would be nice if minimal hybrid hybrid battery included to be legally compliant, even if gas fuel used 99% of time. Trucks are so expensive - needs to last 20-30yrs if well maintained.

      After driving a Jeep with the EcoDiesel I can't imagine that engine in a truck, it wasn't entirely gutless but definitely not something I'd count on for rush hour highway merging.

    As someone who has owned both (currently driving a 150 with a 3.5 EB), I can say that the 150 is a much better daily driver. However, I loved my 6.7. I got rid of it because I quit towing heavy loads. What I don't think anyone here has commented on is the cost of ownership between both trucks. The 250 holds 15 quarts of oil, two oil filters, tires that are at least $100 more per tire, bearings that are way more expensive to change, and aluminum radiators that are connected to plastic connections. I had 350,000 miles on my 2011 before it was traded for another truck. The first 2 years of ownership I put over 100,000 miles on it. While I loved it to death, it was not cheap to own. My F-150 much cheaper but I am hauling maybe up to 5000 lbs. I miss the mass of the 250. It is just so solid but my wallet doesn't miss it at all. They are both amazing trucks. I am, however, waiting for the 7.3. I may switch back now that there is a good gas engine option.

      @@jdjames997 you’re spot on with all of this. It’s tough though. We do a substantial amount of towing, with everything from an F-150 with 3k 12ft travel trailer up to a Duramax dually with a 48ft gooseneck loaded to 26,000lb combined. The problem with the F-150 is that it’s got tons of power, but it isn’t anywhere as stable as a heavy duty. You get pushed around by a 3,000lb trailer all day every day, even without crosswinds blowing. The limitations are painfully obvious before you get anywhere near 8-10k of trailer weight. Wish it didn’t feel so weak and squirrelly. We don’t usually need the power of an HD diesel, we just need something that’s got that solid and nailed-down / secure feeling. Does that make sense? I guess that’s why God invented the 3/4 ton…..

    I would like to see a comparison of 3/4 ton or 1 ton SRW with gas and diesel running 80-100% of payload instead of towing. Reason for this test is for truck campers and whether the added cost for diesel is worth it.

    As someone who had to make this decision back in 2017, I found that most of the F-150’s were the same price if not more expensive then an F-250 4x4 with a gas engine. The dealers put a lot of incentives on the F-150’s to bring the price down. Needless to say, I went with the F-250 Gas and haven’t looked back since. #6.2Lfolife

      Question. You have had the Super duty for 6 years now, what are your thoughts now? I currently have a 2008 lariat with the 5.4 but I have the light duty rear axle and trans and now have a 30ft/5000lbs travel trailer and really need to upgrade. I’m considering an ‘18-20 f150/f250 (gas). My big concern w the super duty is the ride and fuel as this would be my daily driver.

      I made the switch from a 5.0l f150 to a 6.2l f250 and I love the switch. That said, if you’re only towing 5k trailer. Keep the f150. If you plan to go up into the 5-10k range on trailers, then definitely go gas 250. Anything over 10k, start looking at diesels lol. There is a noticeable change in ride between the two trucks as the half ton is more car like and the HD trucks ride like, well, trucks lol. Mpg was worse too. As for length, my f150 was the 6.5’ CC and I went to the 6.8’ CC 250 so drivability due to length was not different. Hope that helps.

    An overlooked reason is the running gear. 4l60e vs 4l80e is a massive difference (I know it's an older comparison, but it still holds true). The tie rods & front arms are notably more thick. The full floater is a huge difference. There's more than just payload to look at.

      @atomicorang The rear axle mounts Directly to the lug nuts, instead of an axle nut in the center of the wheel. It's just a more heavy duty design, hell it's what my freightliner does.

    Both are great trucks. I live in a suburban area and use my 1/2 ton as a daily driver and pull a 5500 lb rv trailer. Parking lots seem to be getting smaller like airline seats. Taking all into consideration, 1/2 ton suites my overall need better

      Pretty much. I've got a Tacoma. Love it! It's the best. However life has put me in a situation where I need to tow a horse trailer. With horses in it. Horses are heavy. Bumper pulls suck. Gooseneck is the way to go. I want to settle on a 1/2 ton but I know I need a 3/4 ton. I also don't want a diesel cause I don't tow that often and diesel is a pain. Not quite sure where i was going with this honestly. Small trucks kickass and I love mine! However, they are not good at towing. And I need to tow. So....

    I just lifted front and rear my 2014 king ranch expo, bought 35s on new 20s, installed rearview cameras and new 8 in Kenwood touch screen with OEM connect. Tinted the windows even darker, bought HD running boards and installed a monster JBL audio system front to back and bought the truck with 103k miles fully loaded leather 1 owner. All in for less than the average down payment on one of these. WOW. I will stick to used low mile 1 owner purchases. You guys enjoy your day 1 price drop. Like we say in TX, BLESS YOUR HEART!

    I have a 2019 F150 (Lariat, 5.0, 3.73, payload package, LT tires) with payload more than 1700lbs and towing capacity of around 10500lbs. It fits my needs very well but those Super Duty’s are pretty amazing. Great video guys!

      The 6.2 gas is a bit long in the tooth now is not a terribly efficient engine. The new 7.3 gas for next year should fix that but the question will be what the economy will be...

      @@2dfx I have a 2011 f250 4x4 with the 6.2. At 75mph I average 14mpg. City and highway about 12. Straight city with a light foot I still hang around 12. I have a heavy foot and get these figures regularly. As for towing I get similar mileage as these two trucks. Its plenty of motor and have towed 12,000 plus on multiple occasions and never felt that I needed the diesel.

    Yeah I think HD is the way to go if you tow regularly. It’s also a good choice if you’re not very experienced, or maybe a bit nervous or scared about towing near the max capacity of a half ton.

    Andre a few years back we had an email discussion about the 16 Colorado and it not being able to tow. I ended up replacing it with a 15 1500 Dodge. A few months ago I replaced the Dodge with a 19 F250. (All trucks 4x and gas motors) I ended up curving the rear coils on the dodge with added air bags inside them. Payload issues, the half tons can get buy with the basics only, don’t add the firewood, bbq, extra water jugs or anything else to the bed. Long story short. I didn’t get the bells and whistles in the Ford but my payload is over 3k and towing 12000. It’s everything I need and then some. Enough to put a quad in the bed and tow the travel trailer. Another Great video. You guys always do a awesome job!!! 👍🏻

    1st off, nobody uses the F-150 to it full potential
    2nd, my dad F-150 had no problems pulling his 28’ 5th wheel ( legally )
    3rd, the average person can’t afford a $500.00 plus truck payment, slick salesmen convinces the customer other wise, unfortunately I know how to drive, I would prefer a F-150 XL that I can afford a lot easier then a $50,000 truck payment that will stress me out, I can put what I want into the truck, I’m 45 years old, I’ve learned my lesson

    I’ve had plenty of both, my personal preference is to stay with a heavy duty. I am amazed with the f-150s capacities these days, that being said I saw an f-150 pulling a 24ft enclosed weighing maybe 4,000lbs hit ice and that trailer absolutely owned that pickup. Spun 2 full 360s and you could tell the trailer was whipping the pickup around. Luckily everyone was ok but my opinion is a heavy pickup will always haul/tow safer and more efficiently. Love the channel, keep up the good work!

    Hey guys. Always enjoy your videos and comparisons. My next truck buy will either be another Eco-Boost F150 or the new F250 7.3 gas. A comparison of the 2 trucks would be excellent. Especially towing the same weight. Acceleration between the two while towing. Mpg isnt important. Its a truck. Both are close in price when similarly loaded.

      This does not make sense though. You are comparing. 1/2 ton truck to a 3/4 ton truck. The 7.3 is more stable, more capacity towing. Completely different trucks.

    For me the F-150 is going to be my choice, as I never plan to tow more than 6500-7000 pounds. Besides, the Coyotoe 5.0, especially with a C.A.I. and a catback exhaust, sounds amazing.

    I've said this so much about mid-sizes. Outside of the USA mid size trucks, coupled with smaller 4 pot diesels spend their whole lives towing, and are renowned for taking the abuse of towing ~7k lbs, or even up to 10k lbs with 5th wheels in some places, which is enough weight for most people outside of hot shot truckers & mega RVs, particularly if you put the effort into a lightweight EU style trailer.

    Get the right tool for the job and don’t cut corners. Good rule of thumb is to not exceed 75% of the rated tow capacity for your particular tow vehicle.

    I’d say roughly 80 percent of people who buy heavy duty trucks don’t even tow anything. They just like have a diesel truck, and that’s why they cost so dang much. I talk to people frequently and ask them what they tow, most of them nothing at all. What a waste and compromise on daily driving comfort. Half tons are so much more comfy for daily driving and road trips. I’ve had all brands in different configurations over the years.

      I have a 2018 Ram 2500 with the 6.7 diesel and it's very comfortable on all but real rough roads without a load. I pull a boat with it in the 4k lb range and some
      heavy flatbeds occasionally. 2500 towing with a Bulletproof Hitch is the way to go. My daughter has a 2017 Ram 1500 and the gas tranny constantly shifts with towing the boat .

    The diesel option on the F250 is almost entirely the cost difference between the two...I think Ford charges about $9K for a diesel. I'm waiting for the F250 Tremor with the 7.3 gas engine.

    I recently rented a f250 fx4 and I love how high it sits love the bigger bed the truck feels way bigger even though it’s the same cab
    But it rides rough man. Family (wife) hated it. But it’s pulling me in. Lol.

    For me it's about safety, even pulling a 29' 6,000 lbs smaller travel trailer threw heavy side wind gust or large semi trucks flying past the super duty will feel much more stable in all the real world different variables.If I where to get a half ton I'd find a Tundra around a 2016 with 100k miles that still had the external transmission cooler and several hundred thousand miles of life left for less than $30k

    I bought a 2011 f-150 eco boost 4x4 the power is crazy when i went to Ford i was going to buy f250 and found out the eco boost was by far the better truck for me. I worked construction for 34 years and pulled trailers a lot

    I bought a F150 with the 3.5 in it a few months ago. I call it a "fully loaded" XL with the STX appearance package. Out the door with extended warranty it was 39 grand It's a very capable truck. I wish I would have spent a little more money and got a F250.

    I've had both. I currently have F250 gas. I really could have gotten by with F150. Fx4 package is a must. However, really disappointed Fx4 F150 no longer available in V-8. I didn't realize the different axle bearings. My 14' enclosed trailer did have to have the tongue weight properly loaded in the F150. F250 pretty simple, carefree loading. F-250 got approximately 4mpg less empty. Pretty close loaded.

      This is the thing most people can't grasp. That extra 2K pounds of mass of the Superduty is so much better for towing a big trailer on a windy day.

    One other factor to consider, transmission. Even though that 1/2 ton is rated to pull 9k it has a much less capable transmission than the 3/4 ton. I have had issue with transmissions in 1/2 ton vehicles pulling heavy trailers, and the newer higher HP engines make it worse. Those lighter transmissions are not built to hold up to a lot of full power shifts on grades. The transmission in the diesel powered truck is made for a much higher power duty cycle, and the new F250 10 speed transmission behind the 7.3L engine is also the much heavier version. Ford is in the lead on this issue as GM still uses a fairly lightweight transmission behind their gas engines in the 3/4 ton truck, and Dodge also doesn't offer their heaviest transmission behind any gasoline engines. One $5,000+ transmission rebuild will make truck buyers pay much more attention to this issue.

    Fortunately Ford had the HDPP F-150, or I would had to get the equal priced F-250 to tow my 37ft, 8,400lbs dry travel trailer.
    It's a comfortable towing experience.
    For me, the HDPP is much more flexible to own and drive than a larger HD truck i use to rent from Enterprise...it's a two-fer.

      I agree. My 2016 with HDPP has 2300 lbs cargo and rated for >12K towing. I dont tow that heavy, but the extra payload allows me to tow my smallish 5th wheel (~1300lbs pin weight) without exceeding GVWR

    I have a 26’ travel trailer with a GVW of about 9500lbs. I had a 2017 F150 with a 3.7L eco-boost that had a 13,300lb towing capacity. It towed it on flats fine, but it bogged down on hills. The trailer was also pretty sqirrley. I upgraded to a 2019 F250 6.7L diesel... the 250 doesn’t even know the trailer is back there, except for the gas mileage. I LOVED the 150 but I feel safer in the 250.

      I grew up a Chevy guy, the company I work for buys all brands for their fleet vehicles. Ford started winning me over around 2011 with their new stuff and it seems like they're getting better every year. After literally driving everything from all the manufacturers over several years (half ton all the way up to 550s and even Chevy's Kodiak), I made the switch and bought myself a Ford. Haven't regretted it yet.

    I literally only bought my super duty because it came with an 8 foot box and an extended cab. You can fit a 2-up ATV in the back with the tailgate closed. I also bought the gas one for that reason I'm not towing a lot and often I just wanted it for the 8-foot box. You know back in the 90s they made half tons with 8-foot boxes and extended cabs but for some reason not anymore.

    If you're testing towing, why not compare the 3.5 EcoBoost to the 6.7 power stroke? Both offer the highest rating for each model. The 5.0l against the gas superduty may be more aligned. I have a 2018 f150 ecoboost and a 2017 f250 powerstroke and they make it hard to decide. I haul a 10k p
    Lb trailer every week and the f150 gets better mileage but with more wind sway. The f150 is more stable but both yank the trailer around all day long pretty equally respectively speaking

    I tow a dual axle trailer that weighs 3,500 lbs. For our new 2022 work truck we ordered a $50k F150 XL SuperCab 8' bed 4x4 & 5.0L. 101A pkg, max tow/payload, alum wheels, skid plates, running boards, privacy glass. I also have money left over for a Thule cantilever ladder rack, bed mat, fender flares, wheel well lliners and Roush's cold air intake and active exhast.
    My 2005 F150 XLT is getting long in the tooth but I had no reason to spend more money when longevity had never been an issue for the original F150.

    The less a larger HD truck is a compromise when not towing, the more a person may want one if they don't really need it.
    A lot of driver don't see a compromise in such a huge truck versus the faster, better braking and handling 1/2 ton.
    With the engines the HD offers, along with that clumsy suspension versus the quicker, better handling 1/2 ton, it was too much compromising for me when not towing.

      Did you look at Ram? The 2500 is a perfect blend between the 1500 and 3500. Compared to the Ford where the only difference between the F250 and F350 is the spring pack, the Ram 2500 uses the 5-link suspension found on the 1500 for better drive ability where as the 3500 uses traditional leaf springs (the ride is going to be stiff regardless, so you may as well use the simpler leaf-springs). Furthermore, Ram offers the air-ride suspension on the 2500 for comfort and features like lowering for parked, although this system is known to have problems, so take that for what it’s worth.

      With the cost/extra stress of repairing air suspension vs your typical leaf spring or strut based system, I'd definitely prefer the older styles.

      I looked at the Dodge and my friend has a 2500 Laramie 6.4, but I needed the swiftness of the E.B., and that quickness is its redeeming quality out in traffic when not towing to help compensate for the bulk and girth...I need all the quickness I can get.

      HDPP towing _ Motortrend got a 6.1 sec 0-60 on both current Gen F-150 with the 3.5 EB and new Ram 1500 with 5.7 and 3.92 gearing.

    Here’s what I find crazy My 2017 F150 CC 4wd has a payload of 1933 and the 250 in this was just over 2000. I’m shocked about that. Yes it’s heavier. Yes the diesel is twice the tq of the EB. Yes the tow rating is about 4300 lbs more than the EB 150. The fact is the payload is just slightly more so you are going to run out of capacity far before you reach the towing capacity. This is why I’m looking at the 350 or just staying where I am. People don’t put as much stock in payload they are just worried about towing capacity. When you think about it basically a 10000lb 5th wheel is going to take up all the payload of this 250. I personally would never tow a 5th wheel with half ton. It should be illegal imo. And as always you two are fantastic thanks for your wonderful work you do for the public

    Did you address the percentage of time you use the truck as a second car driving empty? At only 20% of the time towing how much more fuel will you use running empty each year? Did you consider the physical ability of the older owner to climb in and out of the super duty? Did you mention the spine crunching ride of the super duty running empty? At 9000 lbs pulling a travel trailer the super duty is probably the safer set up but at what point do you say light duty is a better value? At 7000-7999 lbs the half ton turbo is plenty of truck and a much better value. Especially when you use it as a second car running almost empty 75-80% of the time.

      My F250 gets 22-25 hwy and about 16 city. F250s can algo be optioned with power side steps for ease of getting into. Also they cost about the same if you option them smart. I went nuts and got a platinum so yah it was $72k but the F150 platinums were stickering for 63ish but the diesel option alone on mine was 9k so if you get a 6.2L gas F250 they are about the same.

      I get 23mpg freeway at 75, 17-18 all day city errand running. (Ram 2500 diesel 4x4 crew cab) The Ram is a good riding heavy duty truck. And I paid $46k otd with an 8 year/120,000 bumper to bumper warranty. A half ton would save me very little in fuel cost, and most of them cost as much or more! I plan on retiring in a few years and towing an 11,000 lb trailer. That is too much for a half ton. And the Ram in another FLT video got 12mpg towing a 12,500 lb trailer. That is better than the half tons when they are towing half as much. I don't see the value in the half tons at all.

    Best quote of the entire video, "always get more truck than you need to use". While an HDPP may have more payload, it is only 800 pounds. an HDPP is 7850 pounds, where the Superduty is ~10,000 pounds. That added mass helps keep the entire rig planted when towing on a windy day. Just remember this, the larger the trailer, especially a travel trailer, the more the wind will affect it, and that wind pushing against the side of a trailer is going to push the truck sideways, and the lighter the truck the easier it is to move.
    Here is another thought. The tow vehicle weighs, in the case of the one in the video, at most 7050 pounds since it is a 502a Lariat with a 5.5 bed so it can not be an HDPP. Unless loaded to the max, the truck weighs in around 6800 pounds with a trailer attached. a 9K trailer has 2200 more pounds over the F150. That is a LOT of weight to be behind a light truck. The Superduty towing the same trailer is closer to the same weight as the trailer, and far less likely to be affected by it.
    IOW use some common sense when shopping for a truck and trailer. Run the numbers and make sure that what you are buying can get the job done safely, legally, and without overloading the truck.

    Thanx for a fun comparison. Others have mentioned the pricing discrepancy and payload hit F250’s take with Diesel engine. Just migrated from an F150 4.6L, to F250 6.2L. Payload for F150 - 1405 lbs, F250 - 3,500 pounds. Very few half tons can accommodate the payload of trailers that way about 6,000 lbs or more. My data with 750 or so tongue weight, 200 lbs for topper, 300 lbs for driver and passenger. My F150 total payload with nothing in the back seat or bed = 1,250 lbs. Plus we were over on the Rear Axle rating by about 300 lbs per CAT scales. Gross Combined Vehicle Weight Rating is another calculation that all folks pulling trailers need to consider. For example, as I shared with Andre on an email. My Gross Vehicle Weight on the F250, 2 wheel drive is 10,000 lbs. Max tow is about 12,500 lbs. HOWEVER, the GCVWR is only 19,500. I would have thought you combine the Max Tow and Gross Vehicle Weight for GCVWR?? Truck weighs 6,500 lbs/6,700 lbs with ARE topper. So, if I want to tow 12,500 lbs + my 6,700 lb F250, I only have 300 lbs (=driver & passenger?) left on the GCVWR??? No weight available for the backseat, or bed, such as: BBQ, Generator, tools, etc.??? No one has explained this mystery including Andre, Kent, dealer and Ford.com. Finally - agree with other comments on pricing. My F250 Lariat with limited options had a sticker of about $52K! We ordered it to get a non-black interior and 2 wheel drive. We priced F150’s and we could receive approx $10K plus off sticker, but only $6K off on F250. Plus - anyone addressing the towing benefit of the standard E-rated, 10 ply tires on the F250?

    If you tow anything more then 2 times every month, go 3/4 ton. Your transmission will thank you! That is what takes the toll.

      Has Ford described how the 10-speed transmission in both differs? I've been told the heavy duty 10 has beefier components, but havent heard what actually is changed between the two (do they even use the same case?).

      I saw in one video the difference between the 10 speed in the 1/2 ton and the SuperDuty and there was a significant difference in the size. Everything on the SuperDuty transmission was beefier, every piece it seemed. I think the guy said 10% of the parts cross over (electronics, wiring) and the rest of the transmissions were different due to sheer size. I doubt you could fit the SuperDuty transmission in the 1/2 to at all.

      I only need a truck for towing, and basically nothing else, and if that tear the transmission up, that sounds like a reliability issue, not a towing issue.
      That's like telling someone with a high revving performance car, not to Rev it up much because it might wear it out.
      Trucks are for carrying items and towing, and I got my truck specifically for towing, and as long as everything is within specs, the truck should handle it.
      Just change all the fluids 30% sooner than required.

      HDPP towing _ while that’s true to an extent, another sports car analogy could be trying to purchase any road legal sports car and enter it into the 24 hours of LeMans. It simply won’t last, but that doesn’t mean it’s unreliable. Similarly a light duty truck won’t last as long trying to work with what a 3/4 ton should be doing. Obviously occasional use you’d likely never notice any degradation, but if you use it daily at that limit, it simply won’t last as long (though potentially may survive one ownership cycle).

      HDPP towing _ 1/2 Ton trucks just don’t tow well consistently. I have/had 5 GM and Ford 1/2 ton trucks ranging from 2009-2018 all have trans problems. Traveling construction crews primarily use them to get to and from the job from the hotels, hall tools and tow a uhaul trailer to the next job... all the trucks have trans issues... in the process of replacing the trucks with 3/4 diesels. Best move I have ever made. Don’t get me wrong, I have an F150 for personal use and it is a great truck for light use (loading mulch, trips to HD, etc) but I Grab the 2500 when I need to tow anything over 4000 lbs.

    I've got a 2018 Ford F-150 with the 5.0L (10-spd Auto), 2063 lb payload, 9100 lb towing capacity. The truck pulls my 6000 lb (empty), 7600 lb GVWR, 31 ft travel trailer very very well.
    I ordered the trailer and had many months to wait for it to arrive. As I waited for the trailer to be built, I began to second guess myself...was my 1/2 ton truck going to be enough truck?? I was really concerned that I was going to be saying "Hey babe, I'm going to be spending a extra $75,000 on our camping budget....I now need to buy a 3/4 ton truck ($$$) to pull this trailer with"! As I waited for trailer delivery, I did what I could to give my half ton a fighting chance. I installed a Ford OEM brake controller, Ford tow package HD front sway bar, and Ford OEM tow mirrors. I was concerned about stability so I upgraded the rear suspension with a set of Sumo Springs (1500 lb version) and added Bilstein 4600 shocks.
    Upon pulling the trailer home (900 miles) I was very very happy with the stability and ease that my truck pulled this trailer! No sway, No horrible suck then push from semis. I feel it when semi trucks pass, but it's not bad at all...much less than I was imagining. I'm no longer concerned that I need to drop $75,000 plus on a 3/4 ton.
    The 5.0L (395 hp, 400 lb-ft) does well. I get 10 to 11 mpg when pulling, 21 mpg when not pulling. I've also got a Borla dual cat back exhaust (S-type). Sounds sooooo good. Not too loud, but definitely elevates that beautiful V8 soundtrack.
    * I also use an Equilizer hitch (12,000 lb version).

    I have the 3.5EB Goldilocks F150. Hauls and tows: dirt; gravel; lumber; tools; cement mixer; and she doesn't even bat an eyelash while averaging 21 mpg. 😍

    All depends what you use the truck for. I have a travel trailer that weighs 9500 lbs loaded so while I could and have towed it with an F150 before it is a much better experience towing it with an F250. I have towed it with the 6.2 F250 and with a Ram 2500 diesel and both handle the weight better than the F150.
    The other thing to consider is payload. Half ton trucks often have a payload that is really too low for anything over a 9000 lb trailer. Once you include fuel, tongue weight of the trailer and 2 adults you really are pushing the limit.
    Having said all that, if I did not have such a heavy trailer I would have bought an F150 with the Coyote. For most people 9500lbs is plenty of towing capacity.

    I tow my boat... approx 7k pounds with my f250 has and 4.3 rear axle.... rated for 14,800 lbs. I agree with Andre, get more than you need for towing. The truck does it with a cinch! Like I don’t even have a trailer back there!

      3.73 should never even be an option for the F-250, the difference in fuel economy is negligible but the extra torque from the 4.30 gears is absolutely worth it.

    Up until 2 years ago I was strictly a SD guy because of the weight and size of my trailer. Have a '18 F150 now and prefer it, the ride is much much better, easier to park and live with when not towing, easier to work under the hood because the SD is really tall, mpg between the 2 v-8's is about 4 better in 150. I like the look of the SD better but for me the 150 fits my life better

    Watching this is 2024 and hearing the base f150 was $28k nearly had me falling out of my chair…. The pricing is insane, an xlt today is $65k….and a lariat is mid 70s

    Owned a 2017 F150 with the coyote engine. Loved it. But it was only tow rated for 7050 lbs. Our trailer was 7000 empty. Did not want to push the limits. Traded up to a 2018 F350 with the 6.2 gas. It is only rated for a bit over 9000 lbs. This is all I need. One big change I noticed is the rear passenger floor. The F150 is flat , and the F350 has a 2 level. Makes a difference when loading big things in with the back seat up. Wish I could have waited for the 7.3 and 10 speed.

    As far as my truck goes in both size and power, I would choose the F 250 in any situation. I would much rather have the size and power and not need it than to need the size and power and not have it. Great video guys! Keep up the excellent work.

    You should have compared gas vehicles or diesel vehicles after all Ford makes both in both sizes They also make the 150 SuperCrew six and a half foot bed which would be a more even comparison

    Thank you for this video. You have not said anything I've haven't heard from many here in YT land. Sorry, not everybody can afford an F-250, RAM/GMC 2500. I would love to have one, but even finding a F-250, RAM/GMC 2500 within an affordable price, you're stilling looking at a vehicle at least 5-7yrs old with 150k-250k miles & still in the 50k+/- range. I would like to see more 1/2 ton towing videos with the equipment needed for towing. My max towing on my 2018 RAM 1500 is 8400lbs. There are plenty of new/used 28' - 30' TT with GVWR at around 7600-8000, which gives me enough cushion. I would love to see that combo. Sorry, that's how I feel. Stay Safe & God Bless!!!

    I have the 2018 f-150 5.0 V8 FX4 and I tow my 37' long travel trailer. It pulls it fine around 60-65 mph, but I am ready to upgrade to the F-250 so it will not stain too much for the hills and when the wind is blowing the F-250 offers more control on the hwy, especially when 18 Wheelers are passing.
