I’m GenX and grew up during the AIDS panic. When I was teaching my young kids the facts I leaned heavily into STDs. I explained that you aren’t just with that one person. You’re with everyone they have been with and everyone they have been with. Like a pyramid. Sleeping with just one person can mean exposing yourself to 1000 people’s histories. And it wasn’t until a series of doctor visits and medication failing her that we finally decided getting tested might yield some answers. Needless to say, finding out that her husband was cheating on her from an HIV test was devastating. She quickly plummeted into a life of alcohol and depression. Me and the rest of our loving family are doing all we can to support her as she recovers and regain some sort of normal in her life again. Here in Toronto 🇨🇦 Canada I remember during the late 90s people were afraid to go to nightclubs because of cases where 💉 people were infected by being“poked “ with HIV infected syringes. That’s why when Covid was launched by the government they use that term a lot and it brought back a lot of bad memories.

I read about a NASCAR driver once that died from AIDS. Tim Richmond. He was a noted womanizer, and during the offseasons, he could be found doing whatever activity (or whatever women) he wanted to. Long story short, he slept with an unknown woman during the 1986-87 offseason, and became infected with it. There's a good video on here done by 'nascarman history' that explains his attempt to return in 1988, if anyone's interested.
6/7/24 Edit: That video doesn't exclusively talk about his attempted return, but it is a significant part of it.

I remember another version of this urban legend. It was reported on the news once that in clothing stores/departments ppl were poking themselves with pins or sewing needles hidden in clothes. The needles would have a little note saying something along the lines of " If you've poked yourself, congratulations, you now have aids." I hav no idea if this was at all true, but it definitely scared me.

I have an irrational fear of radioactivity. One of those things that unless something catastrophic occurs, or you are just inundated with it in some capacity you really should not be worried.
I also thought my fear of contracting HIV/AIDS (or anything venereal, to be honest) was irrational. Something as natural being equally dangerous is just horrifying, and gives pause to whom you can trust, whom you can invite into your life in such a fashion. Even accidentally, but the sociopathy of deliberately causing this to another is just... horrendous.
    Be safe out there, everyone.
