The word classic is often overused. But this song is a true classic.
Another great classic is What does it take!
Iconic
100 percent
I have danced to that quite a few times...
S-tier all the way.
"Green Onions" by Booker T & The MGs.
Jay & Amber, you'll love their "What Does It Take (To Win Your Love)" !!!! Junior Walker does lead vocals and sax solos!!!
Oh yea, that sax is killer! You'll find an awesome extended version of this song that runs 4:21 minutes to double your sax pleasure. Two other songs
with great sax work is "Baker Street" by Gerry Rafferty and "Year Of The Cat" by Al Stewart.
Yesssss
Great song!
My favorite of theirs. Especially the sax solos!
surlechapeau ... What does it take ... to win your love for me. How can I ... ! Cutting away from this reaction to listen to "What Does it take ..." Great song! Forgot about it until your comment! Thank you thank you thank you!!!!! (And by the way, love mes chapeaux!)
My mom passed a few years ago -this was HER music. She had the 45 of this record, and would play it once in while and dance in the kitchen, back in the early 70's. And she could GROOVE. I'm 61 now. Thanks for the memory....Miss you, mom...
A GO GO faded, but in came The Discotech, then they dropped the tech, and it was just Disco. (I may have some misspellings.)
I miss my mom dancing in the kitchen too. Great music, and the feeling that everything was right with the world, at least in that moment.
You see, the thing is that now, no one goes out to the clubs anymore! And thats where the disco's were.
The dancers in the cages were employed to do that.
Please would you react to Booker T & The MG's "Green Onions" 1962. No lyrics, its an "Instrumential" but its a great tune. ❤🎼
Same! My father used to play his Jr. Walker album and I would dance around the living room. I play this and "What Does It Take" when I want to be close to him.
@@kimcutts6153 Green Onions was my parents generation but that didn't stop me from getting a HUGE speeding ticket in the middle of the night when I was driving to it on an empty highway in the late 80's; worth it 😊
"What Does it Take (To Win Your Love)?" is a funky groove ballad by Junior Walker & the All Stars. It should NOT be missed!!!
I agree, along with “Walk In The Night”
What does it take is one of my favorite songs period. Peter White also coved it and it’s amazing!
One of my favourite Motown cuts.
Junior Walker was a big part of Motown for me.
How Sweet It Is was another banger with plenty of groovy sax.
I agree! The saxophone on "What Does it Take" is sick!! 😊
So funky, so fun, and YES, you HAD to get out on that dance floor. An absolute classic. ✌️
This was a monster AM and FM radio hit when first released.
Archie Bell and the Drells " Tighten Up " is one of the best dance bands =) Thanks Y'all
Junior Walker the funkiest sax man ever 🎷👍
He was the sax player on Foreigner's Urgent.
OHHHHHH, YEAH!!!!! KNEW ya'll would LOVE THIS ONE!!! How could ANYONE not LOVE THIS SONG!!?!?!?!!! Loved your reaction! HUGS!!!❤❤❤❤❤
Thank you "What dose it take" should be next !!
Agreed. If this doesn't get you moving, you need some medical attention.
Jr. Walker was an incredible sax player... Foreigner recruited him in the 80s for their hit 'Urgent'...
I am a child of the 60's and I grew up with 5 sisters (!). I remember watching each of them practice each new dance craze for hours at a time. It seemed like a new dance came out almost weekly. As for a band form the 60's that you haven't covered yet, I don't recall seeing a reaction to Peter, Paul and Mary who were huge in the folk scene then. A few of their songs that come to mind are "Blowing the Wind", "500 Miles", "If I had a Hammer" and one your kids would enjoy "Puff The Magic Dragon".
They have reacted to "Puff..." and "Blowin in the Wind"....easy to find under Search function.
If I Had a Hammer and Puff the Magic Dragon bring back childhood memories for me👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽✌🏽 I was a Black American child living in Brooklyn but Peter Paul and Mary along with The "Mamas & the Papas" was loved by all Nationalities and races ♥️♥️♥️.. Those were the days!!!
500 miles ❤❤❤👏👏👏👏✌️
@@SK-lk3iu Oops, you're right. Dang.
All good suggestions. I would like to add Leaving On A Jet Plane to the list. I actually prefer their cover version over the original John Denver recording, even though he wrote it.
Those two girls are "Go Go Girls" It was common to see Go Go Girls at clubs back then. I'm so blessed to have been a teenager when this song was new. Great reaction as always!!!
This performance was from the TV show Hullabaloo. 😊
P. S. Dancing "in the boxes" was a "thing" in clubs, way-back-when....the Go-Go dancers in their white vinyl boots and/or fringed dresses would get in the box to showcase their groove moves!! 🤩🤩🤩
I thought they were called "Cages". 😊
Back in the sixties when I was in sixth grade I had white go go boots! My were leather, though
@@oldiesgeek454They were!
@@alandhopewell 😊👍
My mom was a Go Go Dancer when I was little.
Awesome soul classic. Now try Booker T & The M.G.'s - Green Onions.
If you love 60s dance music, you have to react to Archie Bell & the Drells, “Tighten Up”, “I could dance all night”, “I can’t stop dancing”, “Let’s groove” & “There’s gonna be a showdown”
Archie Bell's "Here I Go Again" (from the early 1970s) is a great track which is sadly neglected. Later hits like "Soul City Walk", "I Could Dance All Night" and "Disco Showdown" (all made for Phildelphia records) still sound pretty good.
This is one of those songs that if you're not grooving to it, there's an excellent chance you have expired. That intro alone, with the drums and that wailing sax...right before the vocals hit. Just outstanding, and I love how you noted the dancing from this show, too. You can tell everyone is having such a great time with this song. Great reaction, guys.
Jr. Walker was born Autry DeWalt Mixon Jr. on June 14, 1931, in Blytheville, Arkansas, but grew up in South Bend, Indiana (My hometown). He began playing saxophone while in high school, and his saxophone style was the anchor for the sound of the bands he later played in. Saw them live in Benton Harbor, Mi
Funny thing is Walker wasn't supposed to sing on this track. He did the vocals because the singer who was supposed to do this track didn't show up for his session.
I went to school with his daughter in Battle Creek, MI in the 60s...he lived here while touring later in his career and is buried here in Oak Hill...cool marker too!
Naptown is in the 🏘️
Jr. Walker & the All Stars "What does it Take" (1969). For some more great 60s, try "In the Midnight Hour" by Wilson Pickett (1965).
If you loved this one, which I can clearly see you do, there are two instrumentals that are great. They are Green Onions by Booker T and the MG's or Rebel Rouser by Duane Eddy. They are both outstanding 👍.
Nah - IMO Green Onions is a superb and iconic first 30 seconds followed by a couple of minutes of wondering what to do next. To me, "Time is Tight" is a far better track and builds up all through - never letting up.
Rumble -Link Wray. The only instrumental to be banned from US radio. (In some cities.)
Classic Motown sound
Oh my lord, here we go! This was always on the back yard BBQ, grown folks playlist! You wanna see my grandparents get up and get down, play this one ❤ say it again, Amber! TikTok ain’t got nothing in the 60’s! Another great song that you haven’t done yet, Edwin Starr’s “25 Miles”. If you liked what Junior Walker & the Allstars gave you, you will love what Edwin Starr is serving ❤
Edwin was so knocked out by the welcome the Motown stars got from everyone in England with no racism or segregation,he decided to live here and became a Duke or an Earl in Warwickshire in middle England.
Died here too,RIP.
"Shotgun" was Jr. Walker's breakthrough record in 1965. The label was Soul ( along with Tamla, part of the Motown labels). "Shotgun" peaked @ #4 on the Billboard Hot 100 and hit #1 for 4 weeks on the R&B chart. In 1969, Jr. Walker & the All-Stars had their 2nd Top 10 hit "What Does It Take (To Win Your Love For Me)" that also peaked @ #4 on the Billboard Hot 100 and also peaked @ #1 for 4 weeks on the R&B chart. Jr Walker is the saxophonist on Foreigner's great "Urgent."
Junior Walker & The All Stars
Profile:
American R&B and soul outfit, & one of the Motown signature acts in the 1960's.
Originally "The Rhythm Rockers," they became "The All Stars", & in 1961 they were recommended to Harvey Fuqua who signed them to his label Harvey (2).
When Fuqua's labels were taken over by Motown's Berry Gordy, Jr. Walker & The All Stars became members of the Motown Records, recording for their Soul label in 1964.
While 1965 saw the release of their signature hit "Shotgun," they remained active on the charts through to 1972, disbanding in 1979.
Amber you mentioned the girls in the boxes. They were very popular in the 60's and it was an honor to dance there. They were called the Go-Go Girls.
“Road Runner” is another Jr. Walker banger. JW had a cool cameo w/ Foreigner in the 80s playing the sax solo on “Urgent”...
I grew up with this music in the 60’s. I loved dancing this one. I can mash potatoe, do the jerk, do the dog, the twist, the watusie, and many others. I also loved dancing a 1962 one by the Contours. Do You Love Me.
Remember those young ladies dancing are our grandmothers!
Junior Walker was the featured saxophonist. You can also hear him on Foreigner's song "Urgent". Looking for a dance craze song checkout Bobby Freeman's "C'mon and Swim". Cool Jerk is another dance song from the Capitols. Junior Walker biggest hit is "What Does It Take". Not a dance song but a cool sax song. Very Happy you did some 60's for a change.😃
Just so ya know
This was a tv show
Professional dancers on stage
Cool dancing
Yes, teens were not THAT good at dancing!
@rmac. That's correct. It's from the show Hullabaloo that aired o' NBC. And of course the performance was a pretend to play and lip-sync one. 😊
Great choice. Here's another one you might try. I don"t think you've done it, is "Green Onions" By Booker T & the MGs. Its an instrumental. But It's a great song for the "Twist". Another great tune with the Hammond B3 organ.
How about “Soul Limbo” by Booker T? I still love that song today- I find that many don’t remember it.
Try these:
Sam and Dave - Hold On or I Thank You
Booker T and the MGs - Green Onions
Mitch Ryder -Devil in a Blue Dress
James Brown -I Feel Good
Wilson Pickett -Mustang Sally
Spencer Davis Group - Gimme Some Lovin’
Steppenwolf - Born to Be Wild
The Capitols - Cool Jerk
Archie Bell & the Drells -Tighten Up
Spiral Staircase - More Today Than Yesterday
"Home Cookin'", "What Does it Take to win your love" are other notables by Jr..Or you can always hear him tear it up on Foreigner's "Urgent"..He was real popular as a session player for other artists.
Thanks so much for this comment! I was trying to remember Jr. Walker’s great solo on Foreigner’s Urgent! The man was a beast on that sax!
Back in the mid 90's I had just dealt with a crabby customer at work and called the local radio station request line and requested this song to get me dancing and vent some frustration. They actually played the song and my voice requesting it. Shortly thereafter the regional supervisor called up and asked if everything was going alright. She was listening to the same radio station and recognized my voice. Wanted to know if I needed any time off. We had a good laugh. Thanks for the fun memory.
Also react to these songs by Jerry Butler, nicknamed "The Iceman" for his smooth, cool singing voice and style.
1."For Your Precious Love" by Jerry Butler and The Impressions (slow song)/1958
2. "Hey, Western Union Man" by Jerry Butler/1968
3. "Only The Strong Survive" by Jerry Butler/1968 (This song was covered by multiple artists after him)
The energy of this song is undeniable.
OMG! How many times did my sister and our cousin and I dance to this as little girls! We’d turn it up and just go wild! So fun! You must now react to “What Does It Take (to Win Your Love For Me)?
This is one of those "clear The Dancefloor! We bout's to get down!" joints! It still holds fire all these decades later. RIP Mr. Walker.
Got to love the go-go dancers up on in raised cages. Female go-go dancers up high and in a bird cage was a big thing in the clubs then.
Music can hardly get any better than this, or make one feel more joyful.
The GREAT Wilson Pickett...either Funky Broadway or Land of a thousand dances!!!!!!!
I was wanting to say hello to the both of you. It makes me so happy to see young people like you going back and finding the good ole music. I'm 70 years old and the 1960 's wasn't a easy time in America. "However we had some damn good music. "Keep up the good work.
Toes are tappin', fingers are snappin', heads are bobbin' and pure fun is had by all. Cheers....
Archie Bell & The Drells "Tighten Up"...TRUST ME!!
A REAL MOTOWN SOUND ! JUNIOR DID THAT !
I’m a Blues guy - ran three annual Blues Fests for 15 yrs, did 5 yrs on the radio doing “the Blues Never Die” and owned a Blues Club in the 90’s (a great decade for the blues thanks to SRV)
I’d put this on between live band sets, for all the dancers!
Peace
That is Junior Walker of course on the sax. That lady in white is killing it on the floor.
I'm so happy. Amber has a new move. Go ahead, girl. You don't have these moves anymore because break dancing, aerobics, and hip-hop high jack the need to be creative. The older dances were a natural progression of freestyle based on the music. Anyone could do them. Most of us learned from shows like American Bandstand, Soul Train, Shindig, Solid Gold, Hullabaloo, etc. As the trends and music changed, so did the dance moves.
Also, Foreigner has a song called URGENT that features Jr. Walker on the solo. It is a blast !! To follow up on this song, you want WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO WIN YOUR LOVE.
Finally, Billy Preston has a fantastic instrumental hit titled OUTTA SPACE. You guys should really take a minute and fill your ears with this searing blast of energy. No words. Just pure distilled soul to move your feet and pivot your backbone to. Enjoy
Song from "Misery" when novelist Paul Sheldon was driving too fast in the snow, right before going off cliff....Good reaction!
The groove on this is so hypnotic. I could groove to this song all day! Love this classic !
The Four Tops I can't help myself. All their music is great.
Jay…Jay..Jay..Here is something unexpected, 1963 “ LITTLE LATIN LUPE LU” The first release from The Righteous Brothers
A big #1 hit by Jr. Walker was "What Does It Take?". I think you would like it. His group was in Motown and much later, in the '80's, he played sax behind Foreigner. Guys, if you don't already know all about Motown, you really should read up on it. It is a terrific and interesting success story.
Thank you, wow !Jr. Walker the great sax player And the All stars "What dose It Take To Win YourLlove" please do this big hit of their's. PLEASE!!!
Oh my my my! Talk about juicy!!! School dances…absolutely NOTHIN’ like this level of R & B. You’re so right Amber, the sax is just naughty and dirty and oh so good!!!!!
Forgot all about this great song (I am 70) so loved seeing it but, loved even more watching the two of you enjoying it.
The other really big hit by Jr. Walker was What Does It Take (to Win Your Love). It is a GREAT song. So is this one.
Great choice guys! This song is definitely iconic. What a great time in music and dance! 🌺✌️
That is and was my great love: The "MOTOWN" time - that's when my musical taste was formed.
THERE'S NOTHING LIKE THE MUSIC FROM THE MOTOWN LABEL.
Typical: the driving tambourine, the guitar hacks, the legendary "Hammond-Organ", typical rhythm...
SIMPLY GREAT - SIMPLY FANTASTIC....
This is a fond memory. My aunt used to collect 45s. My grandfather had the beloved stereo cabinet record player. Motown & the era songs would blast on Saturday/Sunday throughout the day while cleaning & grandma was cooking.
Similar to Bill Cosby show, our grandkids would make up dances & lip sync in backyard when had barbecue while my parents, aunts & uncles w/ grandparents judge our routines.
It also was part of the music when went roller skating on 'colored Wednesday' (only day for blacks to skate). Listen on radio when went to mall or go to out to eat.
Just think, all those young dancers are in their 70s now. Peace!
They were outstanding...One of my Dad`s favorite groups...My Dad played several instruments, so this group was right up his alley.
Jr. Walker playing the sax ,and singing lead "Shot Gun".Amazing.
This song would not allow you to hold up the wall.We had to dance. Its like a gravitational pull. Straight to the dance floor.
We were so spoiled by great music in the 60’s! We love for you to remind us!!!!
Another great Motown group, Junior Walker & the All Stars
FINALLY!!! I have been suggesting this artist for so long...I know you have a LOT of music to discover but Jr Walker & The All Stars is a classic that must be experienced. What Does it Take is my favorite.
Your next song from this group should be "Gotta Hold on to this Feeling". Great song. Love your reaction to this song.
Yeah, get back to the 60s!!! Love Jr. Walker and your reactions. I was lucky to be in high school and go to the dances that played these songs. It was an awesome time to be young, as were the 1970s,
'Roadrunner' and 'What does it take to win your love' were two other favourites of mine from this band...great reaction from you guys as usual..
My dad used to play this all the time! 😎👍
I still have that 45! My aunts would play this record when they were teenagers and I was a little kid. They gave me all of their 45's.
Jay and Amber, Jr. Walker was part of the Motown family and they really had a raw bluesy sound. They're saying do the Jerk baby. That was a huge dance back in the mid 60's.
The girls up in the boxes (go-go dancers) were there to show everybody the moves for each new dance.....and there were a ton of new dances! They usually wore white boots (go-go boots) so you could see the moves easier.
You guys probly already covered this one but Shout by the Isley Brothers (from Cincinnati) was another "gotta dance" song.
There were so many fun dances, the jerk, the swim, the monkey, the mashed potato, the twist, hand jive these are just a few
A TRUE Classic and fun song. See those girls in the back dancing? When I was a little girl and this would have been my time I wanted to be one of those dancers
This is the song that plays at the start of 'Misery' as Paul drives in the snow before he crashes...
When this song pops up on my variety cds...I rock out!! 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
My heart uncle came home from the Navy on leave when I was a little girl. He taught me a his dance. Love it til this day.
Yes Thank you
No way you can't dance to this one! Classic! The dancers looked like they were doing some dances called The Pony and The Swim. I did not know there was a dance for the Shotgun, never saw this video before. Fun times as a kid.
• A THOUSAND STARS in the SKY - Kathy Young & The Innocents 1961
•The Lion Sleeps Tonight The Tokens Their version was called Wimoweh, a mishearing of the original lyrics of the chorus "Uyimbube", meaning "You're a lion" in Zulu. Also 1961
Remember my sister jamming to this at her wedding reception 30yrs ago!😉
She's Just My Style by Gary Lewis & the Playboys, there's a 60s song for you!
Oh yeah! nothing better than some 1960s Rocking R&B
Great reaction. I was so spoilt in the 60s and 70s growing up in Liverpool listening to Motown, Philly sounds etc, and of course the Beatles. It was such a great time to be. Way back home is my fav Jr Walker song. Keep it going guys👍
This record is a Classic!!! The women dancing in the boxes were called Go-Go dancers. Women like them use to dance in boxes and in Big like bird Cages in the clubs and on TV shows.
This is the first time I've heard them referred to Boxes. I thought they were just called cages. 😊
My family would spend the summer camping in the 60'. We would camp, but the place had a pool, a stable to ride horses. For the teens, they would have a dance at nights. The one song I remember playing over and over, was My Guy, by Mary Wells.
I remember as a five year old kid my older sister (she was 20) always turning on the music/dance programs every afternoon. Hullabaloo, Where the Action Is, American Bandstand, etc... I was just a little squirt but I loved getting up and "trying" to dance along. The 60s were a fun time and you're right - the music was incomparable to today's.
Great to see you moving and rocking with this song with big grins on your faces. That's what this music is all about. Another all-time classic.
The girls in those “boxes” are the Go-go dancers. In those days everybody learned each of the most popular dances. The 50s and 60s both had tons of new dances throughout the decades. These days all everybody is doing is the “shuffle dances”. Might as well just say “ we don’t know any dances.
Guys, the ladies dancing in the box are called, "Go Go Girls." Very common in clubs in the 60's.
Cage dancers were just to showcase the dances. I love his little lisp too Amber. ❤ Peace, love & prayers ❤
FINALLY! I knew you would like Jr. Walker and the Allstars. Now you have to try What Does It Take To Win Your Love by Jr. Walker. 🎶🎶😁👍
I LOOOVE THIS SONG!!! One of those I have to get up and dance to whenever I hear it! Even in the future when I have to use a walker to get around, this will get me up out of my chair 😊. Thanks for this blast from my past!!! 😅
"Shotgun! Shoot um 'for they run now!" Back in the day farmers used to fill their shells with rock salt and shoot people with them in the behind when they tried to steal their crop. "Its CRYIN TIME....ITS CRYIN TIME! Oh yeah. Junior knows.
Whomever gave this a thumbs up must be old as dirt LIKE ME! Right On!
They put this in all kinds of movies, from Malcom X to Misery...it's such a classic.
Nice.. Was waiting for y'all to react to this. This was a dancefloor banger in the 60's. There was even a dance to this that my aunt taught me.. very similar to the Jerk. I wish the video you watched had the original shotgun sound effect at the beginning. It was so recognizable and that would set off the dancefloor like crazy.
As for more 60s.. you gotta hear Sam & Dave - Hold On, I'm Coming.
Yes! That shotgun blast at the beginning is EVERYTHING!
Kicking the amp (amp with reverb)
Yeah Sam & Dave's repertoire contains some all-time greats.
I'm a die hard punk rock metal head
Born of eighties thrash
And I love this song
KILLER! The whole band!
Danced to this in the cafeteria in junior high, and then finally got to see them in a tiny club in the 90’s in Phila. What a thrill to dance to this live in a packed house!
Haha! I already commented about fhis!
